We have measured the near-infrared absorption spectrum for isolated C ions at room temperature. Two bands, at 9145 cm-1 and 10460 cm-1, have been identified in addition to the main absorption band at 9382 cm-1, seen also at low temperature in a matrix. An interpretation based on the theory of dynamic Jahn-Teller effects is proposed.

The flute instability and the associated radial transport are investigated in the tandem mirror with a divertor mirror cell (the GAMMA10 A-divertor) with help of computer simulation, where GAMMA10 is introduced [ Inutake et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 55, 939 (1985) ]. The basic equations used in the simulation were derived on the assumption of an axisymmetric magnetic field. So the high plasma pressure in a nonaxisymmetric minimum-B anchor mirror cell, which is important for the flute mode stability, is taken into account by redefining the specific volume of a magnetic field line. It is found that the flute modes are stabilized by the minimum-B magnetic field even with a divertor mirror although its stabilizing effects are weaker than that without the divertor mirror. The flute instability enhances the radial transport by intermittently repeating the growing up and down of the Fourier amplitude of the flute instability in time.

We fabricated rectangular mesa structures of superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (Bi2212) using e-beam lithography and Ar ion beam etching techniques for terahertz (THz) emission. c-axis resistance versus temperature (R–T), current–voltage (I–V) characteristics and bolometric THz power measurements were performed to characterize Bi2212 mesas. The emission frequency of mesas was determined using a Michelson interferometer setup which also demonstrates polarized emission. Interference patterns of THz radiation from Bi2212 mesas were detected by various detectors such as a liquid helium cooled silicon composite bolometer, a Golay cell and a pyroelectric detector. An emitted power as high as 0.06 mW was detected from Bi2212 mesas. For the first time, most of the pumped power was extracted as THz emission from a Bi2212 mesa. The radiation at 0.54 THz was detected using the Michelson interferometric setup.

The behavior of longitudinal acoustic (LA) and transverse acoustic (TA) phonons in a cubic relaxor PbMg1/3Ta2/3O3 (PMT) ferroelectric has been investigated by Brillouin light scattering. Analysis of the temperature dependences of phonon velocity in the temperature range from 50 to 870 K has revealed anomalies in the vicinity of the Burns temperature (TB≈570 K) for LA phonons and a wide frequency-dependent minimum of the velocities of LA and TA phonons in the same temperature region as the dielectric response anomaly. Using experimental data, temperature dependences of the C11 and C44 elastic constants have been calculated. The elastic constants have been found to be frequency-independent in the gigahertz range. The results obtained are discussed in the framework of modern ideas on the crystalline lattice dynamics of relaxor ferroelectrics.

The authors report the results of temperature-dependent Brillouin scattering from both transverse and longitudinal acoustic waves, heat capacity studies as well as room temperature Raman scattering studies on M2O–MgO–WO3–P2O5 glasses (M=K,Rb). These results were used to obtain information about structure and various properties of the studied glasses such as fragility, elastic moduli, ratio of photoelastic constants, and elastic anharmonicity. They have found that both glasses have similar properties but replacement of K+ ions by Rb+ ions in the glass network leads to decrease of elastic parameters and P44 photoelastic constant due to increase of fragility. Based on Brillouin spectroscopy they show that a linear correlation between longitudinal and shear elastic moduli holds over a large temperature range. This result supports the literature data that the Cauchy-type relation represents a general rule for amorphous solids. An analysis of the Boson peak revealed that the form of the frequency distribution of the excess density of states is in agreement with the Euclidean random matrix theory. The reason of the observed shift of the maximum frequency of the Boson peak when K+ ions are substituted for Rb+ ions is also briefly discussed.

The isothermal crystallization process of thin amorphous solid water (ASW) films on Ru(0001) has been investigated in real time by simultaneously employing helium atom scattering, infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy, and isothermal temperature-programmed desorption. The measurements reveal that the crystallization mechanism consists of random nucleation events in the bulk of the ASW films, followed by homogeneous growth. Morphological changes of the solid water film during crystallization expose the water monolayer just above the substrate to the vacuum during the crystallization process.

The Cu-dependent phase transition in polycrystalline CuGaSe2 thin films has been studied by an electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA) and the synchrotron x-ray diffraction method. A Cu-deficiency parameter, Z, defined as (1 − Cu/Ga) was used to study the phase transition. Upon increasing the Z-value, the composition of the films on the Cu2Se-Ga2Se3 pseudo binary tie line was found to shift from the stoichiometric CuGaSe2 (1:1:2) (Z = 0) to the Ga-rich composition through the formation of several ordered defect compounds.The structural modification in the Cu-poor CuGaSe2 film has been investigated by the synchrotron x-ray diffraction method. The existence of the Cu-poor surface phase over the near-stoichiometric bulk CuGaSe2 film was confirmed by the fitting of the accelerated voltage dependent EPMA data.

The phonon confinement and self-limiting oxidation effects of silicon nanowires (SiNWs) synthesized by laser ablation were investigated. The size of SiNWs was controlled by the synthesis parameters during laser ablation and the subsequent thermal oxidation. Thermal oxidation increases the thickness of the SiNWs' surface oxide layer, resulting in a decrease in their crystalline Si core diameter. This effect causes a downshift and asymmetric broadening of the Si optical phonon peak due to phonon confinement, while excess oxidation causes an upshift due to compressive stress. The compressive stress retarded the oxidation of the SiNWs by self-limiting oxidation effect. This result shows that the Si core diameter can be controlled by compressive stress.

The formation of hydrogen (H)-related complexes and H effects on boron (B) and phosphorus (P) dopants was investigated in B- or P-doped silicon (Si) crystal treated with high concentration of H. The reactivation process of dopant carriers by annealing after hydrogenation was significantly different between the p-type and n-type specimens. The difference is likely to be attributable to the formation of H-related defects based on the stable sites of the H atoms, i.e., complicated H multiple trapping centers are formed by bond breaking due to H atoms in only p-type B-doped Si.

A relationship between intra-4f transitions of Er and vacancy-type defects in Er-doped GaN was studied by using a monoenergetic positron beam. Doppler broadening spectra of the annihilation radiation were measured for Er-doped GaN grown by molecular beam epitaxy. A clear correlation between the defect concentration and the photoluminescence (PL) intensity was observed. The major defect species detected by positrons was identified as a Ga vacancy VGa, and its concentration increased with increasing Er concentration [Er]. For the sample with [Er]=3.3 at. %, the maximum integrated intensity of PL was observed. The VGa concentration was above 1018 cm−3 and additional vacancies such as divacancies started to be introduced at this Er concentration. For the sample with higher [Er], the PL intensity decreased, and the mean size of vacancies decreased due to an introduction of precipitates and/or metastable phases.

Acoustic properties were investigated for four tungsten bronze (TB) uniaxial ferroelectric crystals, i.e., (Sr0.61Ba0.39)5Nb10O30 (SBN61), Cu-doped (K0.5Na0.5)1.0(Sr0.75Ba0.25)4.5Nb10O30 (KNSBN:Cu), K5.80Li3.82Nb10.12O30, and K4.74Li3.07Nb10.44O30 of which the spontaneous polarization is directed along the polar c axis. Large acoustic anisotropy between the two elastic constants C11 and C33 have been observed from all samples. C33 exhibits a significant softening on approaching the diffuse phase transition temperature from high-temperature side while C11 does not show any substantial change in the same temperature range. This softening is accompanied by substantial growth of hypersonic damping, appearance and growth of central peak (CP), and slowing down of the relevant dynamics of CP represented by the reducing half width. All these results indicate that the lattice motions along the c axis couple strongly to the one-component order parameter of the polar nanoregions (PNRs) or precursor polar clusters which form and grow below a certain temperature in the paraelectric phase. The inverse dielectric constant measured along the c axis of SBN61 and KNSBN:Cu can be described by two linear regions divided by a crossover temperature at which the change in the magnitude of dipole moments and the strength of the dipole couplings are expected due to the formation of PNRs. C33 of SBN61 becomes continuously softened upon cooling even when the temperature crosses the Burns temperature TB at which PNRs begin to appear. It may suggest that additional relaxation process other than that of PNRs may exist at high temperatures above TB and couple to the longitudinal acoustic waves propagating along the polar axis. Recent observation of a single-particle relaxation at high temperatures and its transformation into a collective relaxation of PNRs by dielectric spectroscopy [Belous et al., J. Appl. Phys. 102, 014111 (2007)] might be related to the anomalous acoustic behavior of SBN61 observed above TB.

The temperature dependences of acoustic phonon mode and the central peak have been investigated in Pb[(In1/2Nb1/2)0.65Ti0.35]O3 single crystal by Brillouin scattering. Longitudinal acoustic phonon begins to show marked softening below the Burns temperature TB~700 K. The longitudinal acoustic phonon mode exhibits clear anomalies at the cubic-tetragonal phase transition temperature of 540 K and at the tetragonal-rhombohedral one of 460 K. Below 600 K, the relaxation time calculated from the phonon mode agrees well with that of the broad central peak, suggesting a coupling between the local polarization and strain fluctuations of polar nanoregions. This temperature has been identified as another characteristic temperature T* besides TB, where the formation of long-lived polar nanoregions accompanied by the local strain fields governs the relaxation dynamics.

Electron emission spectra resulting from thermal collision of He*(23S) atoms with 2,9-demethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (BCP) films deposited on metal substrates were measured to characterize gap states emerged at the organic-metal interface. For BCP on Au, the gap state is originated from weak chemisorption and serves as a mediator of metal wave functions to the first layer. For BCP on K, organic-metal complex is formed by spontaneous diffusion, yielding the gap states delocalized over the film. In the interfacial region, all the gap state reveals an incommensurate shift with the valence band top of the film, indicating the breakdown of the Schottky–Mott model as evaluating the transport characteristics in organic-metal system.

An electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) study on fluorine-vacancy defects (FnVm) in fluorine-implanted silicon is demonstrated. Fluorine implantation is an important technology for Si microdevices and EPR measurements showed that this process created a variety of FnVm defects of different sizes (V2, V4, and V5). In FnVm, a Si–F bond exhibited a different chemical nature compared to a Si–H bond in hydrogen-vacancy complexes. The most primitive defect was FV2 (F0 center) and the final types were FnV5 (F1 center) and FnV2 (F2 center) which increased in annealing processes as low temperature as 200 °C.

Codoping of boron (B) and phosphorus (P) atoms was performed during the synthesis of silicon nanowires (SiNWs) by laser ablation. The observation of a local vibrational mode of B clearly showed B doping in codoped SiNWs, while Fano broadening due to heavy B doping disappeared, indicating compensation by P donors. The electrospin resonance signal of conduction electrons also disappeared due to compensation by B acceptors. These results indicate that codoping of B and P atoms was achieved in SiNWs during laser ablation.

C60 films with thicknesses of 100–480 nm were deposited on Si reed substrates under in situ photoirradiation. In anelasticity measurements, no internal friction peaks associated with rotational motions of the C60 molecules were observed, and Young's modulus was 1.5 times larger than that of a pristine C60 material. X-ray diffraction patterns suggested that the face-centered cubic lattice was contracted by about 3% and locally distorted from the pristine C60 material. Raman spectra very similar to those reported for dimerized C60 were also obtained. These characteristics recovered to those of the pristine C60 materials after annealing the C60 films at 523 K. These results indicate uniform dimerization in C60 films deposited under in situ photoirradiation.

A strong relaxation mode was observed in the paraelectric phase of barium titanate (BaTiO3) single crystals by Brillouin scattering study and was found to correlate with the softening of the longitudinal acoustic mode and the increase in the hypersonic damping. These observations support the existence of polar percursors and their electrostrictive coupling with the strain caused by the acoustic waves, consistent with former studies evidencing off-centered Ti ions in the high-symmetry cubic phase. A critical slowing down has been clearly observed in the vicinity of the cubic-tetragonal phase transition, indicating order-disorder component contributes to the phase transition of BaTiO3.

The magnetic behavior of titanium dioxide nanobelts has been investigated with and without Codoping. Room temperature ferromagnetism was observed when the Co-doped anatase TiO2nanobelts were prepared via vacuum annealing of 2.5 at. % Co-doped titanate nanobelts, whileannealing them in air resulted in paramagnetic ordering. Interestingly, by vacuum annealing theundoped titanate nanobelts under the same conditions, superparamagnetic ordering was observed inthe resulting anatase TiO2 nanobelts. The electron paramagnetic resonance of this latter sampleshows a strong symmetrical signal at g=2.003 suggesting some sort of exchange interactions amongthe localized electrons’ spin moments from single electron trapped in oxygen vacancies.
