Objective: In interventional neuroradiology (INR), the evaluation of the peak skin dose (PSD) and lens dose is important because the patient radiation dose increases in cases in which the procedure is more difficult and complex. This study evaluated the radiation doses during INR procedures using a direct measurement system.Methods: Radiation dose measurements during INR were performed in 332 patients with unruptured aneurysm (URAN), dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF), and arteriovenous malformation (AVM). The PSD and bilateral lens doses were analyzed for each disease. The Pearson correlation test was used to determine whether the PSD and lens doses were linearly related to the reference air kerma (Ka,r).Results: In all cases, the PSD and right and left lens doses were 2.36 ± 1.28 Gy, 114.2 ± 54.6 mGy, and 189.8 ± 160.3 mGy, respectively. The PSD and lens doses of the DAVF and AVM cases were significantly higher than those of the URAN case. The Pearson correlation test revealed statistically significant positive correlations between Ka,r and PSD, Ka,r and right lens dose, and Ka,r and left lens dose.Conclusion: The characteristics of radiation dose in INR were clarified. Owing to the concern of increased radiation doses exceeding the threshold values in DAVF and AVM cases, protection from radiation is required. Simple regression analysis revealed the possibility of precisely predicting PSD using Ka,r.

Excessive fat intake is associated with changes in gut microbiota composition. In the present study, we focused on the secretory immunoglobulin A (SIgA) coating of gut microbiota as a mucosal immune response affecting the gut microbiota following a high-fat diet (HFD). The level of SIgA coating of gut microbiota was evaluated in normal-fat diet (NFD)- and HFD-fed mice. HFD significantly decreased the level of SIgA coating the gut microbiota compared with NFD. Of note, substitution of HFD with NFD resulted in a complete recovery of the level of SIgA coating. These findings suggest that dietary fat influences the SIgA coating of the gut microbiota. Furthermore, we analyzed the composition of the gut microbiota and the concentration of cecal short-chain fatty acids. HFD feeding changed the gut microbiota composition at the phylum and family levels. Pearson correlation analysis between the level of SIgA coating of gut microbiota and the relative abundance of gut microbiota showed that the relative abundances of Clostridiaceae, Mogibacteriaceae, Turicibacteraceae, and Bifidobacteriaceae were negatively correlated with the level of SIgA coating of gut microbiota. Conversely, the relative abundances of Desulfovibrionaceae, S24-7, and Lactobacillaceae were positively correlated with the level of SIgA coating. The concentrations of cecal acetate and butyrate were lower in HFD-fed mice and positively correlated with the level of SIgA coating of gut microbiota. Our observations suggest that a decrease in the level of SIgA coating of the gut microbiota through a HFD might relate to HFD-induced changes in microbial composition and microbial metabolites production.

Background: Kawasaki disease is suspected to be triggered by previous infection. The prevention measures for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have reportedly reduced transmission of certain infectious diseases. Under these circumstances, the prevention measures for COVID-19 may reduce the incidence of Kawasaki disease.Methods: We conducted a retrospective study using registration datasets of patients with Kawasaki disease who were diagnosed in all 11 inpatient pediatric facilities in Yamanashi Prefecture. The eligible cases were 595 cases that were diagnosed before the COVID-19 pandemic (from January 2015 through February 2020) and 38 cases that were diagnosed during the COVID-19 pandemic (from March through November 2020). Incidence of several infectious disease were evaluated using data from the Infectious Disease Weekly Report conducted by the National Institute of Infectious Diseases.Results: Epidemics of various infectious diseases generally remained at low levels during the first 9 months (March through November 2020) of the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, the incidence of COVID-19 was 50–80 times lower than the incidence in European countries and the United States. The total number of 38 cases with Kawasaki disease for the 9 months during the COVID-19 pandemic was 46.3% (−3.5 standard deviations [SDs] of the average [82.0; SD, 12.7 cases] for the corresponding 9 months of the previous 5 years. None of the 38 cases was determined to be triggered by COVID-19 based on their medical histories and negative results of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 testing at admission.Conclusion: These observations provide a new epidemiological evidence for the notion that Kawasaki disease is triggered by major infectious diseases in children.

Demand for complicated objects in digital contents has been rising as the quality of 3D computer graphics improved. Decorative modeling is useful for enhancing the appearance of objects, however, it is also a difficult task that requires knowledge of decorative patterns. We propose a support method for 3D geometric modeling of ancient Greek and Roman style decor for use in digital contents. Our approach is based on modeling by parts synthesis. These decor styles are characterized by organic shapes of foliage and scrolls; thus, we classified 3,313 parts obtained from 200 pictures of foliage decorations mainly contains acanthus plant according to their shapes and positions. We then extracted 34 representative parts required for decorative design and constructed a 3D model library of these parts. The users can design their original decor by assembling them with existing geometric modeling tools. We found the parts can be divided broadly into two categories: fundamental parts that have curves characterize the scroll pattern and the decoration parts that decorates the curves. Efficient geometric modeling of the European style decor can be achieved by arranging fundamental parts first then decoration parts. Experimental results demonstrate that the user can significantly reduce modeling time decor using our 3D model library.

To promote UGC (User Generated Content) on the Internet, several techniques have been developed to allow users to create CG animations only by writing scripts quickly. TVML (TV program Making Language) is a technology capable of obtaining TV-program-like CG animation by writing text scripts. This paper aims to propose an application that automatically converts blog posts into CG animations with news show format with the aid of TVML. The process is: 1) to fetch HTML of the blog posts and perform web scraping and natural language processing to obtain summarized speech texts, 2) to automatically give a show format received from the analysis of professional TV program to get TVML script, 3) to apply the CG character and artworks, etc. that fit the blog content to obtain the final CG animation. In this paper, we describe the process and explain the application that we developed based on the method, and explain the evaluations of the outcome produced from the blog posts.

Currently, children spend considerable time playing video games and watching videos, which affects their communication skills and speaking time. Previous studies have shown that visual art education helps young children to communicate their ideas. In addition, visual thinking programs improve the understanding of visual images and result in considerable improvement in mathematics, reading, and social emotional learning. In this study, we propose 2D interactive animation systems for children at different educational stages that can be used in visual art education programs. The proposed systems use a crowd simulation-based animation mechanism that does not require complicated keyframing or large amounts of hand drawings. Children have different abilities; thus, we developed two systems, one with minimum functions with voice input and the other with additional functions based on path-drawing input. The proposed systems were verified on primary school and kindergarten students. We allowed the students to use our systems freely by drawing anything and creating stories using their hand drawings. We observed that the students communicated with each other when they showed and talked about their work. The positive feedback obtained from discussion with teachers indicates that the proposed systems encourage communication between children.

Zaïrite was found from the quartz vein penetrating into the metamorphosed mudstone of the Wazuka Unit in Ishidera area, Wazuka–cho, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan, which is the first occurrence in Japan. Zaïrite occurs as bright–yellow granular crystals (20–30 µm) in a cavity formed by the leaching of fluorapatite with native bismuth inclusion. The chemical composition of zaïrite from Ishidera was closer to the ideal chemical composition, comparing with the zaïrite from type locality including Al. The empirical formula from electron probe microanalyzer (EPMA) analysis on the basis of O = 8, OH− = 6 was (Bi0.70Ca0.23)Σ0.93Fe3+2.91(P2.04S0.09O8)(OH)6. The unit cell parameters obtained from the X–ray diffraction (XRD) pattern were a = 7.311(3) Å and c = 16.407(7) Å, larger than the type locality due to difference in chemical composition.

Cyclic nigerosylnigerose (CNN) is a cyclic oligosaccharide. Oral administration of CNN promotes immunoglobulin A (IgA) secretion in the gut. IgA is a major antibody secreted into the gut and plays a crucial role in suppressing gut inflammation due to commensal gut microbiota. To investigate the effect of administration of CNN to promote IgA secretion on gut inflammation, experimental colitis was induced with dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) in Balb/c mice after 6 weeks of CNN pre-feeding. The severity of colitis was evaluated based on a disease activity index (DAI), the gene expression of inflammatory cytokines, and a histological examination. The CNN-treated mice with DSS-induced colitis (CNN-DSS group) showed significantly lower DAI scores and mRNA levels of interleukin-1 compared with the CNN-untreated mice with DSS-induced colitis (DSS group). Histological examination of the colon revealed that the pathological score was significantly lower in the CNN-DSS group compared with the DSS group due to the reduced infiltration of immune cells. The number of goblet cells was significantly higher in the CNN-DSS group compared with the DSS group. The IgA concentration and the ratio of microbiota coated with IgA were evaluated in the cecal content. Although there was no difference in the IgA concentration among groups, a higher proportion of cecal microbiota were coated with IgA in the CNN-DSS group compared with that in the DSS group. These results suggest that CNN might preserve goblet cells in the colon and promote IgA coating of gut microbiota, which synergistically ameliorate gut inflammation in mice with DSS-induced colitis.

This paper examines and summarizes the current conditions and issues with Japanese domestic laws for implementing the Unite Nations Convention on the Law of Sea in Japan to grasp these in relation with the exercise of enforcement jurisdiction at sea. First we grasp the present conditions of the arrangement of domestic laws for implementing the Unite Nations Convention on the Law of Sea (Section 1), generally examine and summarize the significance of arranging Japanese domestic laws for implementing the Unite Nations Convention on the Law of Sea in Japan (Section 2), and clarify the significance that the arrangement of the concerned domestic laws has for Japan's exercise of its enforcement jurisdiction at sea (Section 3). We then clarify the significance of enacting the Japanese Piracy Act in Japan and the future issues (Section 4).

Cryogenic vacuum distillation (CVD) methods have been widely used to extract water from unsaturated soil materials. However, recent studies have reported that extraction conditions (e.g. extraction time) and soil type can influence the stable isotope ratios of soil water extracted by CVD. We examined (i) the effects of extraction time on the stable isotope ratios of soil water extracted by CVD, and (ii) how the stable isotope ratios differed from those of soil water extracted by other methods. We first examined extraction times of 1–6 h, and observed no significant differences in the δ2H or δ18O values of extracted soil water for extraction times >2 h. However, extraction for 1 h collected only 48% of soil water, and the δ2H and δ18O values were significantly lower than those for extraction times >2 h. We then compared the stable isotope ratios of soil water extracted by CVD and centrifugation. Although the stable isotope ratios for both extraction methods were within the range of that of rainwater, the stable isotope ratios for water extracted by CVD were lower than those for water extracted by centrifugation. Our results highlight questions surrounding the use of CVD for stable isotope analysis of soil water.

Purpose: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) are representative disorders of dementia of the elderly and the neuroimaging has contributed to early diagnosis by estimation of alterations of brain volume, blood flow and metabolism. A brain network analysis by MR imaging (MR connectome) is a recently developed technique and can estimate the dysfunction of the brain network in AD and DLB. A graph theory which is a major technique of network analysis is useful for a group study to extract the feature of disorders, but is not necessarily suitable for the disorder differentiation at the individual level. In this investigation, we propose a deep learning technique as an alternative method of the graph analysis for recognition and classification of AD and DLB at the individual subject level.Materials and Methods: Forty-eight brain structural connectivity data of 18 AD, 8 DLB and 22 healthy controls were applied to the machine learning consisting of a six-layer convolution neural network (CNN) model. Estimation of the deep learning model to classify AD, DLB and non-AD/DLB was performed using the 4-fold cross-validation method.Results: The accuracy, average precision and recall of our CNN model were 0.73, 0.78 and 0.73, and the specificity precision and recall were 0.68 and 0.79 in AD, 0.94 and 0.65 in DLB and 0.73 and 0.75 in non-AD/DLB. The triangular probability map of the MR connectome revealed the probability of AD, DLB and non-AD/DLB in each subject.Conclusion: Our preliminary investigation revealed the adaptation of deep learning to the MR connectome and proposed its utility in the differentiation of dementia disorders at the individual subject level.

Ampullary tumors are diagnosed by endoscopic biopsy of the ampulla of Vater. We encountered a rare case of acute pancreatitis following endoscopic biopsy of the ampulla. A 53-year-old man referred to our hospital for detailed examination of a suspected tumor of the ampulla of Vater. We conducted endoscopic biopsy from the ampulla. He developed severe abdominal pain four hours after the procedure. The serum amylase and serum lipase were elevated and abdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed pancreatic enlargement and diffuse stranding of the peri-pancreatic fat, compatible with the findings of acute pancreatitis. We diagnosed the patient as having acute pancreatitis caused by endoscopic biopsy of the ampulla of Vater. Conservative therapy improved his condition, however, a large pancreatic walled-off necrosis (WON) developed. Therefore, we performed endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS)-guided cyst drainage on the 74th day after admission. The WON diminished gradually in size and the symptoms disappeared, and the patient was discharged in good physical condition on the 137th day after admission. In this case, the ampullary biopsy may have caused mucosal edema or intraductal hematoma, resulting in pancreatic duct obstruction. It is important for endoscopists both to be aware of this potential complication following endoscopic biopsy of the ampulla and to inform the patients about possible complications of this procedure.

Nucleolus is a dynamic structure that controls biogenesis of ribosomal RNA and senses cellular stresses. Nucleolus contains a number of proteins including ribosomal proteins that conduct cellular stresses to downstream signaling such as p53 pathway. Recently, it has been reported that modification by a ubiquitin-like molecule, Nedd8, regulates subnuclear localization of ribosomal protein L11. Most of L11 is normally localized and neddylated in nucleolus. However, cellular stress triggers deneddylation and redistribution of L11, and subsequent activation of p53. Although Nedd8 modification is thought to be important for L11 localization, the mechanism of how neddylation of L11 is regulated remains largely unknown. Here, we show that Myeloma overexpressed 2 (Myeov2) controls L11 localization through down-regulation of Nedd8 modification. Expression of Myeov2 reduced neddylation of proteins including L11. We also found that Myeov2 associates with L11 and withholds L11 in nucleoplasm. Although Myeov2 interacted with a Nedd8 deconjugation enzyme COP9 signalosome, L11 deneddylation was mediated by another deneddylase Nedp1, independently of Myeov2. Finally, p53 transcriptional activity is upregulated by Myeov2 expression. These data demonstrate that Myeov2 hampers L11 neddylation through their interactions and confines L11 to nucleoplasm to modulate nucleolar integrity. Our findings provide a novel link between oncogenic stress and p53 pathway and may shed light on the protective mechanism against cancer.

Dental amalgam is a source of exposure to elemental mercury vapor in the general population. The aim of this study was to elucidate the effect of elemental mercury vapor exposure from dental amalgam restorations on gene expression profiles. Out of 26,962 rat genes, mercury vapor was found to increase the expression of 1 gene (Atp1b3) and decrease the expression of 1 gene (Tap1) in the cerebrum, increase the expression of 1 gene (Dnaja2) in the cerebellum, increase the expression of 2 genes (Actb and Timm23) and decrease the expression of 1 gene (Spink3) in the liver, increase the expression of 2 genes (RT1-Bb and Mgat5) and decrease the expression of 6 genes (Tnfaip8, Rara, Slc2a4, Wdr12, Pias4 and Timm13) in the kidney.

We present two cases with steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS) and two cases with steroid-dependent nephrotic syndrome (SDNS) due to focal segmental glomerulonephritis (FSGS) who were treated with a single dose of rituximab (375 mg/m2). Although the two cases with SRNS showed no response, the two cases with SDNS achieved complete remission. The patients in whom the peripheral B-cell counts subsequently increased after the administration of rituximab demonstrated a relapse. Rituximab may be an effective treatment agent for SDNS with FSGS and the peripheral B-cell count may be a useful marker in such patients for preventing disease relapse.
