A high-fidelity attitude estimation technique is proposed for mobile robots which move irregularly in wide space, where heterogeneous inertial sensors are combined in a complementary way in the frequency domain. While the working frequency ranges of each sensor are not necessarily complementary, inverse models of them compensate the sensor dynamics and enlarge their effective working ranges. The problems to be addressed are that the sensor dynamics displays a highly nonlinear property in the case of 3D rotation, and, even if it is approximated by a linear system, the inverse models of them tend to be non-proper and unstable. An idea is to decouple it into the dynamics compensation part approximated by a linear transfer function and the strictly nonlinear coordinate transformation part. By inserting the designed filter before the coordinate transformation, the total transfer function is guaranteed to become proper and stable. Particularly, the differential operator of a high-pass filter cancels the integral operator included in the dynamics compensation of the rate gyroscope, which causes instability.

The recognition of indicated objects by interacting people is an essential function for robots that act in daily environments. However, due to ambiguous references by them, accurate recognition of indicated objects have difficulties for the robots. For example, people sometimes use the words which did not contain in the robots' databases, or they did not use enough words to identify the object. Therefore, to improve recognition accuracy, we must decrease such ambiguity of indicating behaviors of people. For this purpose, we experimentally compared two kinds of interaction strategies to decrease the ambiguity: explicitly providing requests to people about how to refer to objects, or implicitly aligning with people's indicating behaviors. The experimental results showed that participants evaluated the implicit strategy to be more natural than the explicit strategy, and the recognition performances of the two strategies were not significantly different.

This paper presents an effective 3D measurement method from the inside of large structures such as railway vehicles, elevators, and escalators. In our proposed method, images are captured by a moving measurement device, which is composed of a ring laser and a camera, from the inside of the target object. Structures of the target are reconstructed from these images by integrating cross-section shapes, obtained by the light-section method, into unified coordinate by pose changes estimated by Structure from Motion (SfM). We focus on the method to extract information necessary for the light-section method and SfM from the captured images which contain both laser light and texture information. A color filter used in the proposed method enables to extract areas irradiated by the laser for the light-section method. Further, a new block matching technique is introduced to avoid the influence of the laser light, which causes to detect wrong corresponding points. In experiments, we confirmed the validity of the proposed 3D measurement method.

A passive dynamic walking robot can walk down a gentle slope naturally without any actuator or controller, only by potential energy. Therefore, it is thought that the principle of walking exists in this phenomenon. By current researches, the passive dynamic walking has been confirmed for two and four. However, it seems that it is also important to study passive dynamic walking for more than 6 legs because there are many creatures that have more than 6 legs. In this research, a passive dynamic walking robot with more than six legs was analyzed by a simulator. As a result, it was confirmed that passive dynamic walking even for 20 legs could be achieved. Furthermore, its gait could be changed by changing the body structure. In addition, the differences of stability depend on the number of legs resulted, and this differences disappeared by changing the position of the pitch spin parts. Moreover, its stability was very high, so it could walk on the contoured ground.

Kinematically redundant manipulators have a number of potential advantages over current manipulator design. For this type of arm, some control methods through pseudoinverse and nullspace of Jacobian matrix had been suggested. Questions associated with them are about the difficulty of real-time control because of voluminous operations for deriving the pseudoinverse matrix by singular value decomposition. In this paper new formulation and control methods for solving redundancy in manipulator arms by locally optimizing a kinematic and/or dynamic criterion are presented. Formulation is performed by means of a joint decomposition technique, resulting in a particularly efficient computational scheme which is feasible for real-time control. Control method based on this formulation is given in low computational cost to compare with conventional control methods.

移動ロボットの実際的な障害物回避経路を高速に生成するアルゴリズムを提案する. このアルゴリズムは, 作業空間を上から撮影した実画像から効率的に作成されるクワッドツリーというモデル上で機能するので, 作業空間の障害物の配置の変化に柔軟に対応できる. また, クワッドツリーは作業空間のすべての領域を位置に関して階層的に管理しているので, 移動ロボットより小さな領域を探索しないようにすることによりロボットと障害物の干渉を調べなくても障害物回避経路が生成できる.膨大な個数のノードを保持するクワッドツリーを直接的に探索して障害物回避経路を選択すると計算時間がかかる. そこで本研究では, クワッドッリー上にノード数を小さくおさえたパスグラフを展開し, それを探索することで間接的に障害物回避経路を選択し, アルゴリズムを高速化する. 最後に, この高速性を従来の経路生成アルゴリズムとの比較で実験的に確認する.

When a humanoid robot works with a human, it is needed for the robot to pass and receive objects. The robot has to detect that the laden objects are operated by the human on the whole body in object passing tasks. It is important that the robot detects not only push but shear generated by pulling action and twist generated by rotating action for the robot to detect human operations. In this paper, we dispersedly arranged 347 multi-axis soft tactile sensors to a humanoid robot. The multi-axis soft tactile sensors are small muti-axis sensors with urethane structure and they can be placed densely on body of a humanoid. We calculate a deformation vector from the deformation of sensor's upper surface using the output of a muti-axis soft tactile sensor. Next, we suggest the method to detect deformation state in contact surface consisting of soft tactile sensors using deformation moment and average of deformation vectors in the contact surface. Finally, we confirmed the usefulness of the fullbody tactile sensor cover and contact state detector by object passing experiment between a human and a robot.

In order to construct three-dimensional shape models of large-scale architectural structures using a laser range finder, a number of range images are normally taken from various viewpoints, and these images are aligned using post-processing procedures such as the ICP algorithm. However, in general, before applying the ICP algorithm, these range images must be registered to roughly correct positions by a human operator in order to converge to precise positions. In addition, range images must be made to sufficiently overlap each other by taking dense images from close viewpoints. On the other hand, if the positions of the laser range finder at viewpoints can be identified pre-cisely, local range images can be directly converted to the global coordinate system through a simple transformation calculation. The present paper proposes a new measurement system for large-scale architectural structures using a group of multiple robots and an on-board laser range finder. Each measurement position is identified by a highly precise positioning technique called Cooperative Positioning System (CPS), which utilizes the characteristics of the multiple-robot system. The proposed system can construct 3D shapes of large-scale architectural structures without any post-processing procedure such as the ICP algorithm or dense range measurements. Measurement experiments in unknown and large indoor/outdoor environments are successfully carried out using the newly developed measurement system consisting of three mobile robots named CPS-V.

Humanoid robot arms have attracted more and more attention since it is human-friendly with the same size and movement characteristics of a human arm. A new 7-DoF (Degrees of Freedom) humanoid robot arm is proposed in this paper. To achieve high torques while keeping down the weight, all the motors are coupled with tendons. 2 motor 2-DoF (2M2D) and 3 motor 3-DoF (3M3D) coupled tendon-driven joint modules are proposed as basic components for the robot arm. The 2M2D coupled tendon-driven joint module and the 3M3D coupled tendon driven joint module structures are analyzed and compared. The 7 DoFs of a human arm were divided into a 3-DoF shoulder joint module, a 2-DoF elbow joint module, and a 2-DoF wrist joint module. The developed robot arm weighed 2.2[kg], while being able to lift a 1.5[kg] load. A current consumption experiment was conducted to verify the torque transmission characteristics of the 2M2D and 3M3D joint modules. A path repeatability experiment and an experiment to imitate dexterous manipulations of a human arm with master-slave control were conducted to investigate the performance of the modularized humanoid robot arm. The experimental results showed that the joint modules realized motor reallocation via tendon coupling, and that the humanoid robot arm was capable of performing dexterous manipulations like a human arm.

We have applied a parametric excitation method to a kneed biped robot with semicircular feet and have shown that the robot can walk sustainably with only knee torque. A swing-leg of the kneed biped robot has similar mechanism to an acrobot, and many acrobots are controlled in inverse direction like ornithoid walking. These suggest that inverse bending of a knee restores more mechanical energy than forward bending, and hence, the ornithoid walking can be more efficient. In this paper, we first compare the forward bending with the inverse bending for a double pendulum, and show by numerical simulation that the mechanical energy of the inverse bending increases more than that of the forward bending like human walking. We then propose a parametric excitation based ornithoid gait for a kneed biped robot, and show sustainably walking by numerical simulation. Finally, we compare parametric excitation based ornithoid gait with parametric excitation based human gait, and we show that ornithoid gait is more efficeint.

This paper proposes the concept of a novel multi-wheel stair-climbing wheelchair. The necessity for mobility aid technology for elderly and handicapped people that has ``minimal invasiveness for use in an historical environment'' are described. With this goal in mind, a prototype of a novel wheelchair having a stair-climbing function resulting from transformable wheeled four-bar linkages is proposed, and the principle of operation, mechanism design, kinematics, statics and basic performance confirmed through a experiment are illustrated in this paper.
