The branding strategy of local agricultural, forest, and marine products is useful for preserving the tradition of local producers and promoting the production. What is important here is qualification of regional brand, which is valued not only in terms of product attribute but also its tradition and relationship among people in its production and distribution. The purpose of this paper is to examine the contents of the distinctive quality of regional brand and the relationship between a traditional area and a new area of the production. In the light of convention theory, this paper analyzes the logic of justification on qualification of regional brand through a case study on a traditional area and a new area of Kamo-nasu production. The logic of justification on qualification in the new area is different from that in the traditional area, therefore both areas can coexist. Additionally, the logic in the new area serves as a stimulus for that in the traditional area, and the logic in the traditional area supports that in the new area. The relationship between the two areas of production can be interpreted as a strong and harmonious relationship of coexistence.

This paper investigates the current status of slotting allowances in the retail industry in China and the countermeasures of suppliers. The results of surveys of “Company R,” a major food retailer, and “Company C,” a food company, show that slotting allowances are often at a flexible rate. These slotting allowances allow retailers to cover their costs and help retailers to find better suppliers. However, the slotting allowances are relatively high for most suppliers such that some even find it difficult to make a profit. Therefore, “Company C” adopts its own pricing strategy and sales strategy to adapt to the retail market in China.

In order to develop rural areas sustainably, the senary sector companies related to food and agriculture play important roles. Therefore, the number of such companies have increased recently in Japan. However, one of the challenges for senary sector companies in mountainous areas is to develop value-added products and market as well as to establish the enterprise. This study aims to reveal the process of products and market development utilizing local network of food industries, focusing on the “Kozagawa Yuzu Hirai no Sato” enterprise in Wakayama prefecture, in terms of relationship marketing and value co-creation. An interview survey of the company and people of the local network was conducted to achieve the purpose. As a result, the company develops its own product using other companies’ products as ingredients to enhance the product value and also develops market through the industries’ network thus reducing transaction cost. This shows that networking with members sharing the same values and goals is significant for product and market development of a small senary sector company in mountainous areas.

This study examines Nagano Prefecture (Ueda area) as a major ginseng production center and reveals the conditions and issues associated with ginseng marketing.Nagano Prefecture has been increasing its sales of red ginseng in domestic markets through its basic strategy of emphasizing the production and processing of red ginseng cultivated in 5 to 6 years, led primarily by JA. Through these efforts, primary-processed products were sold using the channel strategy of focusing on herbal medicine stores that allow in-store demonstrations. Secondary-processed products were sold using product diversification and channel strategies targeting the commercial-use market.However, future marketing activities for all medicinal products using the strengths of the general agricultural cooperative will also be necessary.

A prime example of the difference in measures taken by the Republic of Belarus and Japan at present is the presence of laws and regulations concerning the measurement of radioactive contamination. The preparation of laws and regulations is crucial to the organization of an inspection system. Furthermore, the most fundamental data analysis at present, the creation of a radiation dose distribution map, ought to be a core element for radioactive contamination countermeasures. Explanations for why harmful rumors created by dialogue about risk with consumers have yet to be overcome can be linked to the fact that consumers are unable to confirm their own safety. In such a situation, it is not enough to thrust upon consumers reassurance alone.

In recent years, land mobility has been enhanced mainly through farmland leasing. Currently,about 50% of the nation’s total farmland is managed by leading producers. Although there are voluminous studies on farmland mobility or land consolidation,very few studies have examined the factors contributing to enhanced farmland mobility from a holistic point of view.This paper is intended to explore the deter­minants of farmland mobility with focus on the length of a lease contract. It also intends to highlight the differences in such determinants across various types of farmland mobility. Our empirical analysis relies on the panel data composed of 42 prefectures for three sub-periods spanning 1995–2009.The main results derived from the estimation are as follows. First,leading farmers are more likely to lease farmlands through a long-term contract. Second, the demand for non-farming purposes has little effect on farmland mobility through lease contracts with land rent.

After the 1990s, farm size in Hokkaido’s dairy farming has exceeded 50 cows. However, familylabor is fixed and farms are short of labor. As a result, the shadow price of labor is expected to exceed the market price of labor. This paper estimated the cost and profit function of Hokkaido’s dairy farming during 1995-2003 and investigated the shadow price of labor. The analysis shows that theshadow price of labor rises as farm size increases, and in farms with over 60 cows, the shadow price of labor exceeds the market price. This means that there is a shortage of family labor on large farms. For the development of dairy farming, transformation of dairy farming is suggested, as well as institutions where workers from the non-agricultural sector can get permanent jobs in dairy farming.

This paper considers the experimental analysis of the policy evaluation analysis in agricultural and environmental studies. First, the role of experimental analysis in the policy analysis is discussed. Experimental analysis requires randomization. However, for the agricultural policy analysis, it might be difficult to achieve assignment to treatment group randomly due to unfairness. Alternatively, hypothetical policy analysis using the stated choice and laboratory experiments are proposed. Second, the choice experiment study is considered to analyze the avoidance behavior of food risk after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. Experimental result shows that the radiation exposure via food consumption does not have an effect on the consumers’ choice behavior. It suggests that an appealing to the food safety aspect has less of an effect on the consumers’ choice behavior. Third, the effect of environmental policy in agriculture on farmers’ conservation behavior is analyzed using a laboratory experiment. Experimental result shows that the non-monetary support system has significant effect on conservation behavior in the early periods of the experiment. However, without compensation, most farmers stop the conservation activities in later periods. Finally, future research topics of the experimental studies for the agricultural and environmental policy analysis are proposed.

The purpose of this paper is to survey estimation of production function, cost function, and profit function of Japanese agriculture since 1980.I expected that in the study of measurement of agricultural production function there would be many papers which chose the translog type as a functional form because of its superior properties. However, my classification of the papers by functional form shows an entirely different figure. I classify the papers into five subjects; namely assessment of agricultural policy, economles of scale and enlargement of scale, technological progress and productivity (including the total factor productivity, which is abbreviated to TFP), equilibrium of factor input, and other aspects. The numbers of these subjects are, respectively, one, six, twelve, fifteen, and three. We can easily see that the papers evaluating policy are very few.Desirable nonparametric estimation methods of TFP have recently developed, but few authors have tried it. I estimate TFP of Japanese rice production by means of a nonparametric method and the result shows the slow or negative growth of TFP since 1975. I think that the major reason of this stagnation has been the acreage allotment program, “Gentan Seisaku”, since 1969.There are many issues can be handled by the applied production analysis, especially by the utilization of production and cost functions. As an example, the discover of the stagnation of TFP mentioned above gives us fruitful information to evaluate the acreage allotment program. I hope that many researchers will evaluate agricultural policies and investigate structural changesof Japanese agriculture by using production and cost functions.

This paper deals with some of the important factors of sales depression in the farmers' direct marketing to consumers using the Internet. The farmers were limited to rice growers. As research methodology, we sent questionnaires by e-mail. In addition, we employed multivariate regression analysis using the data of the questionnaire survey to clarify the factors of dull sales.<br>From the existing research we expected that there would be two advantages and two problems of farmers' direct marketing using the Internet. The advantages are the decrease in search cost and the increase of communication between farmers and consumers. The problems are high risk with payment and little possibility that consumers will find the farmers' homepages. The results of our research support these views. However, the above problems alone are not the main causes of dull sales.<br>The main causes of dull sales were identified with the problems of marketing-mix. As clarified by our analysis on marketing-mix in the farmers' direct marketing using the Internet, the kind of promotion used by most farmers has weak points. There is not enough information about the products that the consumer needs, in spite of the high price of the product. That is, the causes of dull sales are the inappropriate selection of the elements of the marketing-mix, and the lack of consistency between those elements.

気候変動が食物生産に影響が与えることは色々な研究によって明らかにされている。本稿では、ガーナの主要食物の収量において気候変動がどのような影響を及ぼすかを究明することとする。そのため、世帯調査の戸票データを用いて気候変数(温度と降雨量)が主要食物(キャッサバ、トウモロコシ、ソルガム、コメやヤム)の収量に与える影響について計量分析を行う。その際、確率的フロンティア生産モデルを活用する。その結果、緩やかな温暖化が顕著にキャッサバやソルガムの収量を増加させるが、米においては収量が減少することが判明した。農業投入材の利用は基本的に増収につながるが、農薬の投入時期や投入量が不適切であれば収量増にはつながらない。気候や投入材の他、農地規模、世帯規模、世帯主の性別、年齢、教育のような社会経済的要因が食用作物の収量に有意な影響を与える。ゆえに、本研究では、気候変動による食物収量への影響を最小限にとどめるため、化学肥料等の容易な確保につながる投入材市場の効率化、高温や干ばつに強い種子の普及、小農における効率的農薬利用の条件整備の重要性を指摘する。同様に、気候変動や技術に関する情報を効率的に農家に伝えるために普及員やコミュニティーラジオのようなメディアも活用すべきである。
