The origin of information processing is a fundamental problem in evolutionary biology. True slime mold, Physarum, has become a model organism for study of problem solving by single-celled organisms. Here we report its ability to find a smart network by describing its aptitude in maze solving, multi purpose optimization for transportation network and risk management in a spatio-temporally varying field. We discuss these results in the context of a risk management strategy.

Active transport of macromolecules between the nucleus and the cytoplasm is mediated by transport receptors (carriers) that facilitate the passage of specific cargoes through the nuclear pore complexes. All of the nuclear transport pathways are based on a common principle: translocation across the nuclear pore appears to be reversible, and the directionality of transport depends on assembly of cargo-carrier complexes on one side of the nuclear envelope and disassembly of the transport complexes on the other side. This review highlights recent progress in understanding the structural basis of nuclear transport, especially in terms of CRM1-mediated nuclear export.

In an E. coli cell-free translation system, we found that a circular RNA containing an infinite open reading frame produced more translation product than its linear counterpart by two orders of magnitude, because a ribosome can work more effectively towards the elongation on circular RNA than it can on linear RNA. We then tested circular RNAs containing an infinite open reading frame could be translated in eukaryotic systems, in the absence of any particular element for internal ribosome entry, a poly-A tail, or a cap structure. We found that the circular RNAs also produced long peptides in eukaryotic translation systems, possibly owing to the rolling circle amplification mechanism.

Animal retinas possess photoreceptor cells specialized to receive photons and convert them into neural signals. There are two types of visual cells, called rods and cones. Rods function in dim light conditions, and their photosensitivity is sufficiently high to respond to a single photon. Cones show rapid photoresponse, and the combination of cones having different wavelength sensitivity enables color vision. The transduction cascade in visual cells is initiated by the activation of G protein by photoactivated visual pigment, and this eventually results in the hyperpolarization of the cell. Recent progress in the study of the molecular basis of vision is reviewed.

Transient receptor potentials (TRPs) are non-selective cation channels having a high Ca2+ permeability. Since the first finding of TRPV1 that is opened by capsaicin, H+ and heat (>43°C) in the peripheral terminal of primary-afferent neuron, various types of TRP such as TRPM8 and TRPA1 have been cloned. Thereafter, the TRPs have been found to be involved in the modulation of nociceptive transmission in the central terminal of the neuron. Recent studies have indicated an involvement of the TRPs in a plasticity of synaptic transmission in the central nervous system.

High levels of vanadium corresponding 107 tirnes higher than that in seawater are accumulated in the blood cells of ascidians. Among the about ten types of blood cells, the signet ring cells were revealed to be the true vanadocytes. Vanadium in the vanadocytes was reduced to the +3 oxidation state under pH2. The vanadocytes contained the highest level of sulfate and had H+-ATPases in their vacuoles. These findings suggest the possibility that protons, concentrated by H+-ATPases, might be linked energetically to the accumulation of vanadium

構造解析,ラマン分光,計算科学等を組み合わせ,呼吸鎖酵素の新規なアロステリーを解明した.“幅広い種で保存されたコア構造と真核生物が獲得した追加のサブユニットとの間にアロステリック阻害部位が存在する”という仮説をもとに,生物が普遍的に有する呼吸鎖酵素が標的でありながら,特異的抗菌薬の創出に成功した.

The adaptability to ever-changing environment is one of the fundamental characteristics that differentiates living matters from non-living ones. The combination of passive adaptation by Darwinian evolution and active adaptation by sensing and decision-making shapes the mechanisms of adaptability. In this work, we outline that the biological adaptation shares a very similar structure with the stochastic and information-thermodynamics. Fitness, the macroscopic quantity to characterize evolutionary success, plays the similar role as the free energy in this structure. The fluctuation relation of fitness and information derived from the structure can be regarded as an extension of the concept of the evolutionary stable strategy.
