Recently, energy harvesting has attracted increasing attention. The present study focuses on vibration generators based on piezoelectric elements by proposing an internal capacitor cancel control (ICCC) rectifier to improve the output power. The proposed rectifier cancels the internal capacitor to improve the output power while retaining the maximum output power. Accordingly, this paper experimentally demonstrates the improvement in output power by using the ICCC rectifier compared to conventional circuits and the previous proposed circuit.

The 76GHz millimeter wave radar has been developed for automotive application such as ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control) and CWS (Collision Warning System). The radar is FSK (Frequency Shift Keying) monopulse type. The radar transmits 2 frequencies in time-duplex manner, and measures distance and relative speed of targets. The monopulse feature detects the azimuth angle of targets without a scanning mechanism. Conventionally a radar unit is aimed mechanically, although self-aiming capability, to detect and correct the aiming angle error automatically, has been required. The new algorithm, which estimates the aiming angle error and vehicle speed sensor error simultaneously, has been proposed and tested. The algorithm is based on the relationship of relative speed and azimuth angle of stationary objects, and the least squares method is used for calculation. The algorithm is applied to measured data of the millimeter wave radar, resulting in aiming angle estimation error of less than 0.6 degree.

Induction motor drive with inverter control, which can reduce the total weight of the system, has been introduced to the Shinkansen trains in order to achieve high speed transportation.The individual-motor-control type 953 train, which is a part of the STAR21 prototype Shinkansen for high speed experimental run, was used for measurement running, in which we observed wheel slip and adjusted re-adhesion control parameters at the speed of 200 to 300km/h. It was found that the slip detection within one percent speed difference from the reference, was possible by adopting sensitive detecting method. Quick torque reduction by sudden reduction of motor current was necessary for re-adhesion control, and one-second waiting time before re-applying current was also inevitable. For re-applying the current, an exponential curve with four-second time constant was proved to be effective.By these tests, high speed performance and re-adhesion characteristics improvement by adjusting control parameters were obtained. To the next step, for example creep control, which utilizes fine continuous slip, should be investigated in order to keep enough torque minimizing current reduction during re-adhesion control.

Boost converters are key components of DC power conversion used for electric mobility and renewable energy applications. In addition to constant voltage control of the output, variable voltage control has been attracting attention in recent years for high-efficiency drive of loads. However, the dynamic characteristics of boost converters exhibit nonlinear and nonminimum phase characteristics. Therefore, the inverse model for feedforward control is unstable, making high-precision voltage trajectory tracking control challenging. This study aims to present a noncausal and nonlinear feedforward controller to compensate for the nonlinear and nonminimum phase characteristics of the boost converter and to achieve perfect tracking control with respect to the output voltage trajectory. This study also establishes a method for identifying circuit parameters and deriving the time length of noncausal control input for practical implementation. The effectiveness of this control method is demonstrated by experiments using a boost converter.

In Japan speed tests in 300km/h region have been carried out since Oyama Test Line recorded a 319km/h run in 1979. Meanwhile TGV recorded a 515.3km/h run by an electric locomotive installed with a pantograph in 1990 and ICE did 406.9km/h using similar train in 1988. High speed current collection tests over 400km/h using electric railcars have been desired in Japan. Problems of high speed tests are: train speed approaching wave propagation velocity, multi-pantographs resonance, and too large uplift of contact wires caused by lift. It is necessary to keep wave propagation velocity of contact wire higher than train speed. CS contact wire and TA contact wire were compared in high speed tests because it was impossible to get a good current collecting performance by using hard-drawn copper contact wires. In December, 1993 using these contact wires we carried out high speed running tests of 400km/h region on Jyoetsu Shinkansen with the test train STAR 21 which JR EAST built for high speed tests. This paper gives the current collecting performance of these contact wires predicted by simulation and running tests at 425km/h.

This paper proposes a novel V/f control method for PM motor drive system without position sensor. Unlike sensorless vector control, V/f method does not require high performance digital processing.This paper presents three novel topics for V/f control. At First, instability of conventional V/f control is shown, and a stabilization method consisting of a high-pass -filter and a feed back from d-axis current is proposed. After that, a control strategy yielding high efficiency is introduced. It is shown that the condition id=0, corresponding to high efficiency operation for SPM, can be achieved without explicit estimation of dq-axis. Furthermore, since this method is based on the evaluation of the reactive power, knowledge of R_??_ and e. m. f. is not required. At last, a starting method that does not need flux saturation to decode NS pole of permanent magnet, is proposed. The structure of the resulting control system is very simple and its effectiveness has been confirmed experimentally by using 1.5kW, 3600r/min and 3.7kW, 7200r/min PM motors.

This paper presents a theoretical discussion on a combined-compensation control method and its stability on harmonic resonance for grid-connected converters. The interaction between the grid impedance and the grid-connected converter potentially creates harmonic resonance. The compensation control with a combination of a digital filter and a virtual impedance is an effective solution for this problem. The theoretical analysis developed in this study reveals that the proper use of the two control schemes enhances the availability of grid-connected converters. Simulated results obtained from a three-phase high-power converter system verify this analysis.

In this study, a direct drive in-wheel system is proposed as a high power density system for reducing the intermediate parts, such as a speed reducer by increasing the torque. We propose a design strategy to show that multipolarization and the improvement of the gap magnetic flux density can effectively increase the power density. A Halbach array magnet rotor that combines the main electrode magnets and spoke magnets with the core is adopted as a technique for improving the gap magnetic flux density. We compare the Halbach array type rotor to the conventional SPM type rotor by using both of magnetic circuit calculation and FEM analysis. Moreover, the actual sized in-wheel motor prototype with the developed Halbach array magnet rotor is fabricated and measures the no-load induced back EMF. The measured no-load induced back EMF agrees well with the analyzed waveform.

Peak current-mode control is a control algorithm for switched-mode power supplies (SMPSs) that is characterized by high-speed response and high-stability. Currently, a method of implementing peak current-mode control in a digital controller has been proposed however, there is a limit to increasing the switching frequency. Therefore, in a previous study, we proposed a method that enables high-frequency switching by applying a control method called multi-cycle control, which applies the same ON duty ratio over multiple switching cycles to the existing method. Furthermore, in peak current-mode control, an unstable phenomenon called subharmonic oscillation occurs, which is problematic. Generally, this problem is solved by slope compensation however, it cannot be applied to multi-cycle control. Therefore, in previous work, we derived the condition to suppress subharmonic oscillation by designing parameters of multi-cycle control. In this study, we verified the above-mentioned conditions using a real-circuit.

The active-filter is one of the most efficient methods to improve power factor. However, this method has problems such as increasing switching loss and switching noise.This paper describes a new power factor correction (PFC) converter called “Partial-switching PFC”, which achieves power factor rate of 99% only by generating a single pulse in the power line cycle with high efficiency and low total harmonic distortion. Its application to our air-conditioners is described at the end.

Three-phase diode rectifiers have several advantages, such as simple topology, low amounts of high-frequency noise, high reliability, and high environmental durability. However, these rectifiers produce undesirable lower-order harmonics in the input currents. To overcome this problem, a three-phase choke-input-type diode rectifier with AC-side inductors is presented here, which meets to the regulations of JIS C 61000-3-2 (Class A). In this study, the three-phase diode rectifier (3.0kW, 200V/50Hz) is validated through experimental results.

In most variable-speed drives of PMSM, some type of shaft sensor such as an optical encoder or resolver is connected to the rotor shaft. However, such sensor presents several disadvantages such as drive cost, machine size, reliability and noise immunity. Therefore, the sensorless control of PMSM is desired and various sensorless control strategies have been investigated. This paper presents a novel sensorless control strategy for an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM). A new model of IPMSM using an extended electromotive force (EMF) in the rotating reference frame is utilized in order to estimate both of position and speed. The extended EMF is estimated by the least-order observer, and the estimation position error is directly obtained. The proposed scheme corrects the estimated position and speed so that the estimation position error becomes to be zero. The proposed system is very simple and the design of the controller is easy. Several drive tests are carried out and the experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed sensorless control system.

An algorithm optimizing train running profile with Bellman's Dynamic Programming (DP) is investigated in this paper. Optimal running trajectory of a train which minimizes amount of total energy consumption has been produced under fixed origin and destination, stipulated running time and various track profile. Many previous works on this area adopt the numerical techniques of calculus of variations, Pontryagin's maximum principle, and so on. But these methods often meet some difficulties accounting for complicated actual train running preconditions, e.g. complicated functions which describe electrical motive/brake torque, local constraints of the state variable as speed limitations, non-linear running resistance and variable grade profiles. Basic numerical DP algorithm can cope with such comlicated conditions and give the globally optimal solution. But this method consumes too large computation time for practical uses. We have made the improvements for shorter calculation time of whole optimization process and reducing the numerical error. The confined state space and irregular lattice play most important role for them. Dynamic meshing and effective utilization of system memory also realize shorter computation time. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated using various complicated running conditions.

A simplified vector control is proposed as a driving method of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) for electrical household appliances. Control structure is simplified by eliminating the speed regulator and the current regulator from the conventional vector controller. Output voltage references are determined by feedforward-like calculation using motor parameters, rotation speed command, and current references. In the static characteristic, the proposed vector control method is almost equal to the conventional one, because the voltage references are calculated in the vector space. A practical estimate equation of rotor position is proposed, and the phase locked loop control approach is employed to drive PMSM without position and speed sensors. Design method of two control gains is given. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed control is verified by simulation and experiments.

The improvement of adhesion characteristics is important in electric motor coach. We have already proposed the anti-slip/skid re-adhesion control system based on disturbance observer and sensor-less vector control. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been confirmed by the experiment and the numerical simulation using the tested bogie system of electric motor coach.Then, we apply the proposed method to the actual electric multiple units, which is Series 205-5000. In the experimental results of Series 205-5000, this paper discusses that the proposed anti-slip/skid re-adhesion control system has the desired driving wheel torque response. Moreover, this paper proposes the evaluation method of re-adhesion control test results.
