This paper presents a new unified analysis of estimate errors by model-matching phase-estimation methods such as rotor-flux state-observers, back EMF state-observers, and back EMF disturbance-observers, for sensorless drive of permanent-magnet synchronous motors. Analytical solutions about estimate errors, whose validity is confirmed by numerical experiments, are rich in universality and applicability. As an example of universality and applicability, a new trajectory-oriented vector control method is proposed, which can realize directly quasi-optimal strategy minimizing total losses with no additional computational loads by simply orienting one of vector-control coordinates to the associated quasi-optimal trajectory. The coordinate orientation rule, which is analytically derived, is surprisingly simple. Consequently the trajectory-oriented vector control method can be applied to a number of conventional vector control systems using one of the model-matching phase-estimation methods.

This paper proposes a new design method of nanoscale servo control for a Galvano scanner by using FFSC (frequency-shaped final-state control) method. In the Galvano scanner, it is important to reduce the residual vibration after positioning; further, this scanner must be robust to the variation of the resonance modes of the plant. In this paper, a feedforward input is designed by using FFSC by considering not only nominal performance but also robust performance. Simulations and experimental results are shown to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The authors have proposed that ΔΣ modulator is effectively applied to an inverter system with PWM pattern generating scheme. The major features of ΔΣAE modulator is the inherent nature of spread spectrum and simple configuration. On the other hand, ΔΣ modulator can be considered as a sort of error amplifier. Using proposed ΔΣ modulator, an automatic amplitude control function will be realized. In this paper, an automatic amplitude control performance of ΔΣ modulated voltage source inverter is described. The results of computer simulation and FFT analysis indicate that output influence due to DC source variation are effectively reduced by ΔΣ modulator. Furthermore, a possibility of system design simplification is described in this paper.

This paper describes the inverter drive characteristics of a 2.4 MW permanent magnet generator (PMG) for a diesel electric propulsion system. We demonstrated the relations between the PWM (Pulse-Width Modulation) pulse patterns and temperature rise in a permanent magnet in a PMG. Additionally, we demonstrated that inverter failure has a significant impact on the current and torque in a PMG.

A new type of magnetic levitation system called the Inductrack, has been proposed by R F. Post. This system is composed of a special arrangement of permanent magnets on board which is called the Halbach array, and a close-packed array of shorted coils in the longitudinal direction on the ground. This composition can obtain a large magnetic force, a very low take-off speed and a high lift-to-drag ratio. This paper describes numerical simulations of the Inductrack magnetic levitation by the Fourier series analysis which is utilized in the analysis of superconducting magnetic levitation. By using numerical examples considering a full-scale car model, we reveal the features of the Inductrack system in comparison with the superconducting magnetic levitation.

The voltage modulation factor of the magnetic flux control PWM method is discussed. The fundamental component of the inverter output voltage is proportional to the radius of the flux locus. The modulation factor is derived by the theoretical study on the length of the flux locus produced from inverter output voltage.As a result, the modulation factor of the magnetic flux control PWM method is calculated by the portion of zero vectors in the PWM pattern. The modulation factor is proportional to the output voltage from zero to 12/π2. By using proposed modulation factor, the magnetic flux control PWM method can control output voltage from zero to over-modulation.Simulation results and experimental results are also shown.

Once the break-down of the train schedule occurs, the crew schedule as well as the train schedule has to be modified as quickly as possible to restore them. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for automatically modifying a crew schedule that takes all constraints into consideration, presenting a model of the combined problem of crews and trains. The proposed algorithm builds an initial solution by relaxing some of the constraint conditions, and then uses a Taboo-search method to revise this solution in order to minimize the degree of constraint violation resulting from these relaxed conditions. Then we show not only that the algorithm can generate a constraint satisfaction solution, but also that the solution will satisfy the experts. That is, we show the proposed algorithm is capable of producing a usable solution in a short time by applying to actual cases of train-schedule break-down, and that the solution is at least as good as those produced manually, by comparing the both solutions with several point of view.

This paper deals with a merging section of Personal Rapid Transit system. Several schemes have been proposed for the control of vehicles in PRT systems. In quasi-synchronous control systems, one flow of traffic must form a queue at a merging section in order to avoid the collision of vehicles. In other words, a queue is formed on one of the lines, which is called the sub line; the other line is called the main line. Basically, vehicles on the main line have priority. We propose a control strategy whereby vehicles on the main line are usually not stopped; vehicles on the main line are only stopped when the number of waiting vehicles on the sub line exceeds some specific number. Therefore, queues are formed on the main line and the sub line, respectively. This paper presents a fundamental discussion of the effects of the double queue and the relationship between traffic density and the behavior of traffic.

Recently trains raise speed and reduce the motor vehicle ratio. It is needed, therefore, to utilize adhesion force more effectively. In running tests of high speed Shinkansen train, it has become clear that slip and readhesion repeat under strict adhesion conditions as far as they rely on the conventional concept of readhesion control. So we have developed a new control method “Anti-slip Readhesion Control with Presumed Adhesion Force” and confirmed in running tests its various effects. Furthermore, we apply it to commuter transport electric cars to research various points such as effects of control improvement, control parameters which are suitable for it, differences between with presuming and without presuming adhesion force, and so on. In running tests, we confirmed that we can utilize adhesion force more effectively by applying the newly developed control method to commuter transport electric cars.

This paper deals with a new resonant gate-drive circuit for power MOSFETs. The proposed gate-drive circuit is characterized by a resonant inductor connected in series to the gate terminal of the MOSFET. It is possible to charge or discharge the input capacitance of the MOSFET by using the resonance between the inductor and the input capacitance. Experimental results are shown to verify the viability of the resonant gate-drive circuit. As a result, the proposed resonant gate-drive circuit reduces its power consumption to one tenth, compared with a conventional one. It was experimentally clarified that the proposed circuit makes it possible to improve efficiency of a high-frequency inverter using MOSFETs.

This study aims to develop a power supply system without a traction transformer for weight reduction and downsizing. Transformer-less power supply is expected to realize step-down, rectification, isolation, and motor drive using a high voltage silicon carbide (SiC) power device. The primary challenge of this work is developing a novel circuit that isolates the motor drive circuit from the AC line without using the traction transformer. Accordingly, we devised a flying capacitor circuit to solve the existing problems and aims for capacitive isolation. Subsequently, we devise a nesting capacitor as a short-circuit prevention measure. We report the isolated circuit configuration and operating principle.

For Projected Shinkansen, it is necessary to develop an economical overhead catenary system allowing stable train operation at high-speed and meeting the transport demands. In order to develop a new overhead catenary system for this purpose, we designed a high tension simple catenary system with CS contact wire (Copper contact wire with Steel-core), and constructed this system on Tohoku Shinkansen line for operation test. During 4 years, we measured contact loss of pantograph, uplift and stress of contact wire, its maintainability including the wear of contact wire, and others. The test results so far obtained prove that its performance is as high as that of high-tension heavy compound catenary system.

In recent years, there has been an increasing demand for position sensorless control in PMSM drives, and various methods have been studied. Switching noise is a problem in the low-speed sensorless control method that uses the current slope during PWM. Furthermore, another problem is that the inductance does not appear in a sinusoidal distribution owing to magnetic saturation.In this paper, we improve the sensorless control method that estimates the position from the current slope during PWM, which is greatly affected by switching. Additionally, we build a multi-layer neural network (NN) that directly estimates the position signals by learning a large amount of current data, and verify the driving results in the low-speed range when the learned NN is incorporated into real-time control.

This paper describes techniques that Japanese power electronics engineers can use to improve the quality of their technical papers written in English and the accompanying technical presentations. These techniques are based on the experience that the author has gained by participating in international conferences. Such techniques are important to discuss because the significant differences exist in writing and presentation styles between Japanese and American engineers. The author believes that such style differences are caused by differences between the Japanese and American cultures. The objective of this paper is to help Japanese engineers understand these cultural differences and improve their technical communication skills in English. The paper also includes some practical tips on writing and presentation techniques for improving the quality of their technical communications in English.

Almost all methods for sensorless drive of permanent-magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), which estimate rotor phase using fundamental components of stator voltage and current, cannot operate properly at low speed including standstill. For proper sensorless drive of PMSMs, they must be started and driven up to a certain speed by other methods. This paper proposes a new simple vector control method for a starter, which can start and drive PMSMs from rest up to the 50% rated speed. The proposed vector control method has the following useful features: 1) It is constructed on basis of “MIR strategy" together with feedback current control, and has a new specific stability function preventing rotating oscillation; 2) It can start up PMSMs with less than 50-70% rated load; 3) It can prevent over-current even at very low speed including standstill; 4) It can be applied to both of salient and nonsalient pole PMSMs; 5) It does not require motor parameters of high precision; 6) It is simple and required computational load is very light; 7) It starts up PMSMs with pre-specified maximum current and automatically reduces current amplitude to the necessary minimum; 8) It attains pre-specified ratio of effective/reactive currents at steady state; 9) It can estimate properly rotor phase as well as speed at speed of 10% rating or more. This paper presents the new vector control method in detail from principle and confirms its usefulness by experiments.

This paper discusses the influences of common source inductance in power converter circuits. Common source inductance is the source-side inductance inside a power module, and it shares common circuit parameters with both the gate drive and power circuit. Therefore, common source inductance will influence the switching characteristics of the module. No paper has yet addressed the relationship between common source inductance and switching characteristics such as surge voltage and switching loss. In order to improve the switching characteristics during turn-off operations, this paper presents a design procedure with respect to common source inductance. In addition, experimental results rated at 500V, 40A are shown.

This paper describes a 6.6-kV adjustable-speed motor drive for use in fans, blowers, and pumps without a transformer. The power-conversion system consists of a diode rectifier, a five-level diode-clamped PWM inverter, and a voltage-balancing circuit. A 200-V 5.5-kW downscale model is developed, constructed, and tested. The five-level PWM inverter and the voltage-balancing circuit are studied in detail. Experimental results obtained from testing the 200-V downscale model confirm the viability and effectiveness of the 6.6-kV adjustable-speed motor drive, indicating that the dc mean voltages of the four split dc capacitors are well balanced under all the given operating conditions.

Recent increase of semiconductor power converter systems brings about harmonic problems. In a single phase power converter, a capacitor-filtered rectifier is used to derive DC voltage from an AC commercial power source. This converter generates harmonic currents and its power factor is very low. In order to reduce harmonic currents and compensate the input power factor, we propose a novel switching method, called the simple partial switching method (SPSM), for a single phase AC to DC converter. A control device of the converter switches once in every half cycle of an AC commercial power source by this SPSM. The switching timing is decided by the input power factor and by the odd order harmonic estimation function of the input current. The estimation function is defined as the harmonics ratio compared with the harmonic currents standard. Experimental results clarify that our SPSM converter reduces harmonic currents and compensates the input power factor.
