An interior permanent magnet (IPM) motor drive system which has regenerating capability augmented by electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) is proposed. In the proposed system, EDLCs are arranged in series with batteries so that a lesser number of the EDLCs and batteries will be required. The proposed system has two bi-directional voltage boosters: one is for both the batteries and EDLCs to control the dc-link voltage of a PWM inverter and the other is for only the EDLCs and is used to control the energy flow from and to the EDLCs.<br>In this paper, a strategy to control the energy flow to and from the EDLCs is explained and its effectiveness is confirmed by simulation and experimental results. Furthermore, the efficiencies of the voltage booster, inverter, PM motor, and whole system are measured for the system with the basic configuration, i.e., which consists of only one bi-directional voltage booster and PWM inverter. Then, the steady-state characteristics are determined. Finally, the efficiency of the voltage boosters in the proposed system is determined, and the advantage of the proposed PM motor drive system is discussed.

Novel algorithm of the dynamic driving/braking force distribution is proposed for electric vehicle (EV) with four in-wheel motors. In such EV, the vehicle lateral motion can be controlled by yaw moment, generated with torque difference between wheels. This method is known as DYC (Direct Yaw moment Control) in normal engine vehicle engineering, however, the torque difference can be generated more directly with in-wheel motors. One problem of DYC is its instability on the slippery road, such as wet or snowy asphalt. To achieve high stability, the loads of wheels are preferable to be equal. The load of each wheel can be evaluated with root sum square of driving/braking force and side force. Therefore, the driving/braking forces, or motor torques, should be distributed depending on the side forces of wheels, to minimize the load imbalance between the wheels. The proposed algorithm can solve this optimization problem approximately with a few calculation cost, thus this method can be applied for real-time calculation within a control period. The approximate solutions with proposed method are evaluated by comparison with numerical solutions that require long calculation time. Difference between these solutions is negligible one, and this indicates the effectiveness of proposed method.

A train scheduling method to minimize the trip time of passengers under restricted electrical energy is investigated in this paper. This method assumes that the consumed electrical energy of one railway artery, all the vehicles of which are local trains, is restricted to a certain value. The endogenous variables of this method are the running time for each interstation, the consumed energy for each interstation, and the number of vehicles. The solution depends on the Kuhn-Tucker theorem on the constraints of both the number of vehicles and the total amount of consumed energy per unit time. This method enables us to determine the running time for each interstation and the number of vehicles according to the solution, which gives priority to small changes in the running time in interstations over decreasing the number of vehicles. Numerical examples verify the effect of reducing the time increment caused by the restriction in some artery without reducing the number of vehicles. The results also imply that the effect on passengers of each energy-saving method differs for every traffic artery.

This paper proposes a new high speed robust tracking control system based on both “Zero Phase Error Tracking” (ZPET) control system and robust servo system for an optical disk recording system. In the optical disk recording systems (for example CD-R), the tracking servo system must have the complete tracking response whose error is less than 0.1 [μm] for an amplitude of 100 [μm] of reference input signal. However, its detecting signal is only a tracking error. For this purpose, this paper proposes a new estimation method of the reference input signal by using only tracking error, and realizes the high speed robust tracking servo system with ZPET control. Moreover, this paper considers the saturation of controller output. The experimental and simulation results point out that the proposed system has a quick and precise tracking response.

In this paper, a novel single-phase sinusoidal PWM voltage source inverter (VSI) is proposed. The inverter has an additional arm to the normal single-phase bridge circuit. The two auxiliary self-turn-off devices of the branch avail to adopt the composite PWM control, which contributes to reduce the ripple in the ac output current. Also, the inverter has a LC series resonance circuit tuned to twice the system frequency f, which is connected in parallel with the smoothing capacitor on the dc side. This absorbs the ac component included the dc pulsating current with 2f. Consequently, the capacity of the smoothing capacitor is drastically reduced. As an example of the application of this VSI, the utility connected residential photovoltaic power generation system is shown. In the system, the smooth dc current without pulsation is supplied from PV array, and the VSI provides a sinusoidal ac current for domestic lords and the utility line.

This paper describes improvement for wheel slip and re-adhesion control for electric locomotives with induction motor vector control. Compared with the conventional slip frequency method, the torque response is much improved by the vector control. By referring the re-adhesion process for the traditional rectifier controlled do-motor locomotives, suitable torque reduction to an induction motor is applied in accordance with the wheel slip speed. The test results by the series EH500 locomotive for Japan Freight Railway Company, show much improvement for the re-adhesion process especially when a steeper torque reduction ratio is applied.

This paper describes a vector control system of an induction machine using a neutral-pointclamped voltage source inverter (NPC-VSI) that is one of double series connected inverters.The NPC-VSI is able to output 5 levels step-shaped line to line voltage without output transformers or reactors, and it may reduce harmonic currents corresponding to torque ripples. However, the NPC-VSI has a problem that excessive high voltage is applied to swiching devices when a neutral point of two DC capacitors of the NPC-VSI varies from the center of the DC link voltage, because the neutral point is floating.This paper proposes a current controller to which the space vector theory is applied. This can reduce harmonic currents to 1/4 of those of a conventional voltage source inverter using 6 swiching devices, and regulate the neutral point potential within a preset range. To simplify the current controller, information about voltage space vectors is given from the vector controller to the current controller. Validity of the current controller is confirmed by a prototype using an induction machine of 2.2 kW.

This paper gives a new analysis about the minimum current under the flux saturation for efficient drive of synchronous reluctance motors. This paper shows that the asymmetric flux saturation of the mirror-phase inductance causes the nonlinear minimum current trajectory, and derives newly the general analytical trajectory and a concrete approximated analytical trajectory.

A grid-connected inverter is indispensable for photovoltaic power generation and smart grid systems, and it must be designed for stable operation. The impedance method based on the Nyquist criterion is often utilized to analyze the stability of grid-connected inverter systems. The impedance method is based on the eigen values of the product of the inverter output admittance and the line impedance matrices in the frequency domain. However, the frequency characteristics have so far been derived only for inverters with analog control systems. A new frequency analysis method for inverters with digital control systems is proposed in this paper. First, a stability analysis example for a three-phase LCL-type inverter controlled digitally is shown and the results are compared and validated with those by simulation using a Saber simulator. Finally, they are also compared and validated with experimental results digitally controlled by a DSP-based system.

This study develops a transformer-less power supply for AC railway vehicles. The rail on the permanent route of an AC electric railway is grounded. The proposed power supply circuit takes advantage of this feature and performs AC-DC power conversion without using a bridge circuit. The circuit topology is a combination of indirect type DC-DC converters. The operation and control of power conversion from AC to DC power run and from DC to AC regeneration is confirmed using numerical simulations. In addition, the operation of the proposed circuit is validated experimentally.

This paper proposes a new structural dual rotor SPMSM (Surface Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) using ferrite magnets having high torque density, small size, and low noise. In addition, the advantages of having a toroidally winding and adual rotor are examined through analysis, and it is confirmed that the torque density of the proposed motor is competitive to the rare-earth IPMSM (Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor).

An unbalanced input voltage three-level inverter can be applied to boost the input voltage by employing energy storage devices, such as the electric double layer capacitor (EDLC), in order to enhance the motor output performance. However, the unbalanced input DC voltage limits the output power and generates particular voltage harmonics. In this paper, the harmonic characteristics, a method to change the power distribution and the limit of the power distribution when the ratio of the DC source voltage to the EDLC voltage is changed are discussed.

Shinkansen trains are now being operated under the Automatic Train Control (ATC) system and are automatically decelerated and stopped at stations when necessary by the ATC system. The ATC system is based on the on-board signal transmitted from wayside equipment via track circuits. The ATC brake is activated when a train received a signal speed lower than the train speed and is released when the train speed becomes lower than the signal speed. Because the length of block section is determined by the ATC brake force in the worst case, the train normally decelerates so fast that it coasts a certain period up to the end of the block section as shown in Fig. 1.We studied the control method of on-board ATC system for Shinkansen train to shorten the operation time and reduce the adverse effects of changes in deceleration on ride comfort, while maintaining the safety and reliability of present ATC signal system. We propose an on-board pattern brake control system based on the present ATC data without changing wayside equipment. When compared with the simulated operation time under the present ATC brake control system, the operation time by this proposed method is 47.6 seconds less, after brake is applied until the train stops at the Hakata Terminal station, with series 500 Shinkansen train. This paper discusses the system and effects of the on-board pattern.

In this paper, a power converter in combination of 1200V Si-IGBT and SiC-SBD is investigated for decrease of devise loss in compare with Si-PiN diode. To use device simulation which is based on considering of switching experimental results and static characteristics is employed to estimate device loss. In device simulation, also, we adjust an anode injection efficiency of Si-IGBT to increase switching speed and optimize trade-off relation between on-state voltage and switching loss of Si-IGBT due to minimize total device loss. As the device simulation result, the switching frequency of in combination optimized Si-IGBT and SiC-SBD has approximately three times as high as Si-IGBT with Si-PiN diode. Moreover, in this paper, the limitation of switching frequency by comprehensive total device loss with present heat cooling ability is discussed.

One of the most important design problem of the permanent magnet (PM) motor is the reverse rotation. The conditions for the reverse rotation with a square-wave drive are investigated experimentally. Relations between the applied voltage and the pulse rate fp at which the probability Pb of the reverse rotation takes a maximum are discussed. Effects of the initial rotor position δ and the delay-time td of the first pulse on the value of Pb are discussed. Calculations of reverse rotating performance are made with various conditions, and clarified the mechanism of the reverse rotation.

The high reliable timer is required in a synchronous measurement and in a distributed processing that uses the network computers. The precision of it is expressed with the stability of the frequency. The easiness of embedding, the low cost and down sizing are requested to the timer that is required in these various fields in addition to its precision. In this paper we propose a technique that realizes a high precision timer, which enables the synchronization in a many point with the low cost and with the small size. The proposed technique adopts a general PI control of VCO (Voltage Controlled Oscillator) based on GPS (Global Posi-tioning System). Also the controller of the timer that was developed is realized by software by using a DSP (Digital Signal Processor). The frequency stability that was obtained by the timer that was developed was 2.3×10-13
