Initials of first names of men and women were compared across different countries (Japan, USA, Germany, and South Korea) and different periods (Japanese adults in 2006, and college students in 2008 and 2017). Results suggested a trend in which the letters, “J,” “R,” and “T” are more popular in men than in women, and that “A,” “C,” “E,” and “M” are more popular in women than in men, whereas popular first names differ among countries and change across periods even within the same country (Japan). The phonetic sounds of the initials popular for men give a “hard” impression, and those of the initials popular with women are perceived as “soft.”

Lady Gaga's fourth CD album ARTPOP, designed by American pop artist Jeff Koons, adopted one of my illusion works, namely, Hatpin urchin, as the main inside design. This occurrence was significant for the study of visual illusion in the following three senses: first, it drew people's attention to visual illusion; second, the chosen illusion was novel; and third, for the first time in its history, visual illusion was recognized as ubiquitous.

The relation between the Muller-Lyer illusion and the angle illusion was investigated experimentally. Fifteen university students estimated the apparent angles of the oblique lines and the apparent lengths of the shaft lines of the Muller-Lyer figures. In the case of the in-going Muller-Lyer figure, the angles of the oblique lines were overestimated and the lengths of the shaft lines were underestimated. In the case of the out-going Muller-Lyer figure, the angles of the oblique lines were underestimated and the lengths of the shaft lines were overestimated. It was found that the negative correlation coefficient between the angle illusion magnitudes and the Muller-Lyer illusion magnitudes was significant.

Research on visual illusions in different animal species as compared to human beings is fruitful to know the adaptive significance of the illusory phenomena. Comparative studies on visual illusions suggest the precedence of global features in adult human visual perception and the precedence of local features in non-human animal visual perception. Similar results are also reported by a developmental study (Doherty, Campbell, Tsuji, & Philips, 2010), suggesting the precedence of local features in human child visual perception. The importance of the comparative work on visual illusions in two perspectives (cross-species and developmental) is discussed.

This note is a short report on the activity of the Young Researchers Committee of the Japanese Psychonomic Society (JPS) in 2017. As the highlighted activity of the committee in 2017, we held the oral session of the 36th annual meeting of JPS. Eight young researchers were selected as the finalists from 17 entries and made presentations on their studies that have already been published in peer-reviewed journals. One of the finalists who got the most votes from audience was awarded as the Young Psychonomic Scientist of the Year 2017.

Big time-series data have been generated in various applications including sensor networks, financial systems, online documents, medical information, web access records, social networking services, etc. How can we efficiently and effectively find typical patterns? How can we statistically summarize all the sequences, and achieve a meaningful segmentation? What are the major tools for forecasting and outlier detection? This paper summarizes our recent work, which includes: SpikeM that analyzes the rise and fall patterns of influence propagation in social networking services, TriMine for fast mining and forecasting of complex time-stamped events, AutoPlait for automatic mining of co-evolving multidimensional time sequences, EcoWeb as ecology-inspired nonlinear dynamical systems for pattern extraction from online activities, FUNNEL for automatic mining of spatially co-evolving epidemics, CompCube for non-linear mining of competing local activities, and RegimeCast for real-time forecasting of data streams.

In this study, we investigated the influence of visual information on the food preference of toddlers. Forty 2- to 3-year-old toddlers participated in two tasks: a naming task and a preference task. We prepared photographs of vegetables and fruits and then made line drawings of the photographs. We selected high and low familiarity foods based on wholesale quantity orders for the last six years. At first, we presented the high and low familiarity food images side by side. Participants were asked to choose a favorite one and say the name of the food. Results showed that the effect of the naming task on preference was different between vegetables and fruits. The visual information of color and texture might be important factors for a food's visual preference.

Since the advent of functional magnetic resonance imaging cognitive science has experienced a turn towards neuroscience. Models of perceptual and cognitive functions can now be tested against patterns of human brain activity in anatomically well-defined regions of interest. Structural and functional connectivity analyses can inform us about how different brain regions are interconnected and interact in perceptual and cognitive tasks, as well as during resting states. In this study I review the results of a series of experiments that aimed to reveal the visual-vestibular sensory processing underlying self-motion perception. We (Frank, Baumann, Mattingley, & Greenlee, 2014; Frank, Wirth, & Greenlee, 2016) localized regions in the posterior insula using fMRI with visual and vestibular stimuli. The results suggest that two areas in this part of the brain are involved in self-motion perception: the parieto-insular vestibular cortex (PIVC) for the processing of vestibular information and posterior insular cortex (PIC) for the integration of visual and vestibular information. The results suggest that these two regions play different roles in the integration of visual and vestibular cues related to self-motion perception.

The Noh Mask Test measures social skill ability. Noh Mask image stimuli of this test were compared with Human face photos stimuli by Matsumoto & Ekman, Face Drawings. A multi-dimensional scaling analysis of the comparative judgments of the healthy subjects for these three stimuli revealed a two-dimensional solution involving pleasure and arousal. The reaction of Face Drawings located on X and Y axis. Although face stimuli of human lacks the first quadrant, Noh mask image to draw a smooth oval, covering all of the quadrants. Representing subtle look, Noh Mask Test was considered to expose the feelings of continuity. The test was compared with Rorschach Test and MMPI, also performed test–retest method. Schizophrenia in outpatient day care performed Noh Mask Test, and they were studied after 4 years later. The Noh Mask score of employed after 4 years later was more similar to healthy employee than unemployed patients. It was found that Noh Mask Test is a test for examining the social skills.

Semantic dementia (SD) is a neurodegenerative disorder featured selective loss of semantic memory associated with a focal atrophy of the anterior temporal lobes. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical features of SD and to propose a coping method as a care for the patients with SD. Difficulties in naming and recognition of words with surface dyslexia on kanji-word reading [gogi-aphasia] are the most prominent symptoms in the patient with the left-dominant temporal lobe atrophy, while misidentification of familiar persons [prosopagnosia] and/or misunderstanding of visual objects [associative agnosia] is the characteristic of the patient with the right-dominant temporal lobe atrophy. Either symptom, however, rather appeared common in almost every SD patient from longitudinal perspectives of progressive amodal semantic impairment. Then the persistent stereotypies at an early stage of the disease turned into prominent and huge destructive behavior and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). Quality associated way of care for patients with SD, early exposure to daily cognitive skill training utilizing preserved abilities and stepwise application to the care-services is essential.

In science education, it is crucial to create teaching materials that are directly linked to students' individual experiences. On “The Japanese Psychonomic Society Committee for Developing Teaching Materials for High School Students,” using computer graphics technology, we developed a visualization system called “Face Homunculus Viewer” (FHV) that provides an opportunity for students to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between brains and minds. Additionally, we conducted a workshop on human touch perception using FHV. In the workshop, we defined the two-point discrimination threshold of touch as “tactile acuity,” and students measured their tactile acuity with the methods used in psychological experiments. Our contributions are the development of an interactive system for visualizing differences in tactile acuities between bodily sites within each individual and differences between individuals. We believe that this study will indicate a new direction in science education in which computer graphics can be applied.

Virtual-reality research aims to create substantially identical percepts and experiences of the real world for human users by presenting artificial sensory inputs. I describe technical topics in recent virtual reality studies as of 2014, and especially focused on physically and psychologically critical components of reality, various modality-specific displays and apparatus, position and action sensors, and development software. While these technologies are progressing on going, relatively standard and general technology and products are selected in the paper. Perceptual psychology and psychonomic sciences give an evolution to the virtual-reality research, and virtual reality studies promote investigation of reality in perceptual psychology and psychonomic sciences.

The characteristics of the visual and tactual activities were investigated in a congenitally blind person before and soon after an operation performed for regaining his sight. The subject was born blind due to congenital cataracts, and underwent aspiration of both cataractous lenses at the age of 9. Before the operation, his ERG was normal. After the operation he wore +12D lenses. The results obtained were as follows: (1) Before the operation, he could identify colors. To some extent, he could also count objects, discriminate the size of 2 two-dimensional rectangles or two circles. On the other hand, he could not identify two-dimensional figures. (2) During the 15 days after the second eye operation, his percentage of correct responses increased in all tasks, except for discrimination of the size of 2 two-dimensional circles. (3) Postoperatively, the patient no loger attempted to touch objects after counting them and discriminating the size of 2 two-dimensional rectangles, but with either size discrimination of the circular shapes or identification of shapes, he touched them after looking at them, just as before the operation.

We surveyed the number and the contents of papers published in the Japanese Journal of Psychonomic Society, as well as the society's annual meetings, from 1982 to 2012. Over the course of these 30 years, we found that papers on perception increased in the first decade, followed by an increase in cognitive research, which reflected the shift of the members. Although the time of year and format of the annual meetings were not fixed, a review of the roster showed that greater participation was seen when the meetings were held in fall or winter and/or if they were joint meetings with other societies. The results would contribute to a better management of the society.

When a person synchronizes finger tapping with an isochronous stimulus like a metronome, taps often precede stimuli by 100 ms or less. This phenomenon is called negative mean asynchrony (NMA). Two experiments were conducted to examine whether NMA is generated by the underestimation of inter-onset intervals (IOIs), and to examine the relation between NMA and beat-based timing. In Experiment 1, estimations of empty intervals were compared with those of filled intervals in duration and tempo tasks. Durations of empty intervals were estimated to be shorter than those of filled intervals. On the other hand, estimated tempos were the same for both empty and filled intervals. In Experiment 2, the synchronized finger-taps were compared between empty and filled intervals. NMA was observed in all conditions, but the synchronized error was greater for empty intervals than for filled intervals. These results showed that perceiving IOIs as shorter advanced the timing of taps but was not an essential factor causing taps to precede stimuli. It is considered that beat-based timing is not the cause of NMA.

When conducting experimental psychology, psychological phenomena are often described in mathematical terms and logic. How practical is the mathematical approach in experimental psychology? This paper aims to explain plain linguistic and mathematical expressions, how psychological phenomena are expressed mathematically in experimental psychology and how mathematical models are constructed, using examples of psychological phenomena related to sensation, perception, and cognition. First, it outlined the perspective, thinking, and utilization of mathematical models in experimental psychology, using some psychological phenomena. Second, it was introduced that several previous studies dealt with spatial properties of perceptual and cognitive phenomena, including the author’s studies. It is hoped that this paper will increase familiarity with and opportunities to utilize mathematical models in experimental psychology.
