The roles of psychological journals on promoting the reproducibility of psychological research are discussed. These roles contain requiring better statistical expressions, detailed description of research method, pre-registration, replication reports, improvement of peer-review, and accelerating open science. A case example of Japanese Journal of Personality is described.

Touch, the sensation processed by the somatosensory system, is closely related to the body state. Due to the spatiotemporal characteristics of the somatosensory receptors and the structural constraints of the body, we have sometimes experienced with sensory illusions in touch as well as vision. In this paper, I introduce several techniques to generate illusory sensations which can be exploited to develop information displays. I review the previous findings of our experiments of the changes in the haptic perception or body image using the techniques.

This research note reviews experimental methods to elucidate the visual processing underlying material perception, and considers how to generate experimental stimuli of three-dimensional shapes for the experiments. For generation of a computer graphics image of a three-dimensional object, it has been widely known that its shape features can affect the material appearance of the object. However, it is not established how to systematically control the shape features to investigate the effect. Here we suggest to utilize texture synthesis algorithms. Specifically, we used a height map of a three-dimensional object as a source image, and synthesized a novel height map by using a texture synthesis algorithm. We tested three algorithms to generate the height maps; i) synthesis based on image statistics, ii) example-based synthesis, and iii) synthesis using a convolutional neural network. We discuss how effective the texture synthesis algorithms are to investigate the effect of the shape features on the material perception.

If time-marking events constitute a temporal pattern as in music, they are often perceived as being played at a particular tempo, lending a sense of "rhythm keeping." The present study examined how actual event timing in drum phrases would affect the formation of this impression. A sense of rhythm keeping was derived even with physically non-isochronous patterns if some beats were subdivided by markers. This tolerance for timing deviations varied along the base tempo of the phrases, being only partially consistent with the prediction from the conventional illusion of a divided time interval. These results were discussed in terms of the processing of time intervals and sequences of them.

The Young Researchers Committee of the Japanese Psychonomic Society conducted a survey of postdoctorates in the field of psychonomic science. Results showed some discrepancy from national surveys: postdoctorates in the field of psychonomic science tend to have higher rates in research positions, especially in academia.

The "intelligence" of sixty kinds of animals was rated by university students (N=117) using a 100-point scale. Although the results generally corresponded with the so-called "phylogenetic scale" from "amoeba" to "chimpanzee," several interesting points were observed. First, "Japanese monkey" was rated higher than "orangutan" and "gorilla." Second, "dog" and "dolphin" were rated as high as the Primates. Third, mimic birds and social insects were rated higher than other birds and insects, respectively. Finally, a kind of fish ("shark") was rated higher than a mammal ("mole").

Reasons for people to choose food include both biological and cultural functions. Through experiences studying Korean society from the standpoint of cultural anthropology, I would like to introduce the studies on the cultural aspects of food selection, and consider the existence where Koreans ask the reason “Why do they eat it” as an example of dog meat diet.

Sense of agency refers to the subjective feeling of controlling one’s own actions, and through them, the external events. Sense of agency is integral to self-consciousness, and been the subject of numerous studies aimed at uncovering its underlying mechanism. However, the significance of the sense of agency in human behavior remains poorly understood. Is it simply a by-product of action, or does it play a causal role in our behaviors? This review first briefly summarizes the leading theories of the mechanism underlying the sense of agency and then discusses the ways in which it influences human perception and behavior. The sense of agency is not only a subjective feeling experienced during decision-making and action–execution, but also plays a critical role in shaping our perceptions of the outcomes of our actions, directing our attention, and informing our actions. Furthermore, understanding the role of the sense of agency in cognitive systems is essential for the development of techniques that predict human behavior and subject experience and for designing optimal action plans for systems.

How should we define synesthesia? After more than a century of research, scientists have still not reached an agreement on what synesthesia is (and is not). The author’s opinion of this condition is that the disagreement on the definition of synesthesia is essentially a disagreement on determining what sensations are normal and what are unnormal. All different versions of the definition of synesthesia state, either explicitly or implicitly, that synesthesia is an extraordinary sensation, which is caused by the activation of a second sensory or cognitive pathway that is not normally activated by the inducing stimulus. In other words, the boundary between synesthesia and non-synesthesia depends on what sensations are considered normal, and this can only be judged subjectively. In so far as we consider synesthesia as an unnormal/extraordinary phenomenon, it is illogical to hope that there could be some objective criteria to distinguish synesthesia from non-synesthesia. The remedy is to assume continuity between synesthetic and non-synesthetic experiences.

This note is a short report on the activities of the Young Researchers Committee of the Japanese Psychonomic Society (JPS). As the highlighted activity of the committee, we have held the oral session of the annual meeting of JPS both face-to-face and online formats nine times. We also have promoted interactive activities across the country through social networking services. By introducing public applications, we have tried to organize our committee with diverse members. We will continue to develop new activities to target a broader range of young or early-career researchers.

Virtual reality (VR) is a new methodology for psychological studies. Especially in modern VR head-mounted displays (HMDs), researchers can control more complex and dynamic stimulus presentation than in standard laboratory experiments, enhancing the ecological validity of research. While the studies by VR HMDs have increased, little is known about what are technical points to establish more stable VR environments and whether current VR HMDs have millisecond accuracy and precision for stimulus presentation compared to traditional laboratory environments, since most standard methods in psychological studies are not optimized for VR environments. Thus, the present article provides key features for setup of more reliable VR studies, introducing recent works that have revealed the time/timing accuracy and precision of visual and auditory stimulus presentation in modern VR HMDs.

The COVID-19 pandemic has placed significant restrictions on experiments such as those using motion capture suits in the laboratory. On the other hand, the number of users of virtual reality (VR) social network services has been increasing due to the pandemic. Thus, we constructed a laboratory in VRChat, one of the VR social network services, where full-body ownership experiments can be conducted, and validated it. The subjects entered the experimental world in VRChat, changed into the experimental avatar, and participated in the experiment. The subject’s movements and the avatar were synchronized or asynchronized with 1-s delay. After 5-min ball reaching using the avatar, subjective evaluations were made regarding senses of body ownership, agency, and pseudo-haptics. In the synchronous condition, we obtained a stronger sense of body ownership, agency, and pseudo-haptic sensation than in the asynchronous condition, reproducing the results of previous studies. These results suggest that the laboratory in the public VR social network enables us to manipulate experimental conditions, and perform experiments on full-body illusion.
