In Kanazawa Institute of Technology (KIT) , students are taking a lecture on Creative Experiment as a basic practical skill subject. The aim is the training of independently acting and thinking individuals. Attendance students devise an experiment theme themselves and are designing the experiment for measuring the factor which influences a phenomenon. In this report, the instance for which a student utilized patent information as references in the design of an experiment is introduced, and it discusses about the literature information which a teacher should show to students further.

New theory of learning indicates "learning" is the process of interaction which occurs in social relationships within a community containing a multitude of things beyond any single individual. From this point of view, the "project-based learning" is one of new methods of teaching and learning at university. The method of project-based learning includes of team learning, team teaching, portfolio assessment, open space, and faculty development. This paper discusses potential of university to become a learning community with the method along with results of the educational practice at Future University-Hakodate.

Excelにはマクロ用言語としてVBAが組み込まれており,データベース以外の用途にも数値計算・自動データ処理を目的とした道具にもなりうる.しかしながら,工学系学生を対象としたプログラミング言語教育にExcel VBAを適用する議論はなされていない.そのため,Excel VBAのプログラミング言語教育への適否とその教育効果を,数例の数値解法プログラムを作成する体験を踏えて検討した.この結果,Exce1の持つマクロ機能とグラフィックス機能を用いることで数値計算過程の動画処理が可能となり,計算過程や物理現象の理解を支援する等の効果が期待できる.プログラミング教育における学習意欲の高揚と自主学習への動機付けになりうる.さらに,数値計算アルゴリズムの理解を教育目標におけば,Excel VBAはプログラミング教育に十分適用できる.

Internship education in Nagaoka University of Technology which was planned at the time of foundation of the university and started with the first students has been continued for 24 years. In our closely linked education system of undergraduate and postgraduate master programs, the internship is assigned a key role of connecting these course programs. Our internship is not a simple training, but requires each student to attain some achievement at the training institute, related with a relatively long training period of 4-5 months. The effect and usefulness of our system are verified by the result of questionnaires performed several years after the internship for the trainees who are now actively working in their job sites, as well as that done just after.

One of the educational goals of the Advanced Engineering Faculty of Suzuka National College of Technology is to instill in graduates the ability required to become an internationally engaged engineers. To help realize this goal a project oriented toward the development of an international internship or an international cooperative education (Co-op) system was planned and implemented for the past three years. In this paper the results of investigations concerning the present state of Co-op in the United States and Canada, a tentative international internship at a factory in the United States, and an educational program developed in cooperation with Georgian College in Canada are described. In cooperation with the Ohio State University, a newly developed distance interactive-learning system that enables us to simulate international internships is also proposed.

With the background of our university' s advantageous constitution of both art and engineering departments, we have developed a curriculum that educates students with regard to both technological knowledge and artistic capability. In this paper, we introduce an intensive seminar that we have developed for training students' skill of collaboration and communication with people who are from other technical domains. The seminar sets the target to sophomore students who are supposed to have finished general subjects and not to be specialized to each department too much. The students make a small group and work on an assignment of developing an interactive system that requires both technical and artistic skills and finally make a presentation on their works in the classroom.

ET Robcon (ET software design robot contest) is a contest which aims the education of embedded software engineer. Participants compete modeling and implement technology in the development of the robot control software. The robot should run autonomously, and both the software design and the driving performance of the control are evaluated. In this paper, the contest overview and examination methodology are described. Then the results of the participants′ survey are discussed. As a result, we confirmed the improvement of modeling technology of the participants and the effect as a PBL (Project Based Learning) .

A new framework of intersecting institutional spheres of industry, government and academia is proposed to promote better mutual understanding of their roles in human resource development for the coming knowledge-based society. It is encouraged to also involve students to make the development, practice and assessment of universities′ engineering education programs well-balanced, solid and productive. Thus, a unique alliance between industry-government-university-student is established. A prospective university should take an initiative to define four indispensable elements of engineering education program such as a vision, goals, curricula and evaluation, which as a whole should be as a common platform for all stakeholders. A proposal is also made for the method of thesis evaluation, by which the mission and goals can be made much clearer to faculties, students as well as industries.

“Creative Exercise” is one of the most important articles in the course of technology educations at the universities and the colleges. In this paper, some trials for the creative exercises developed in Osaka Electro-Communication University are introduced ; those are (1) exercises in “Creative Design Engineering”, (2) studies and educations on robots, (3) executive plan of rescue-robot contest, and (4) supporting system for application for the qualifying examinations. Their results and effectiveness are also discussed.

The rescue robot contest for junior high school students was created to give students an opportunity to design a robot to rescue the victims under large scale disasters. The activity was not only intended as an humanitarian project but also aiming at students to : (1) take the role of victims and imagining the situation from his or her perspective, (2) enhance thinking skills, creativity through the problem solving processes and, (3) work cooperatively in groups. From results of questionnaire for the participated students, important factors for further implementation as curriculum of technology education are implied.

This paper claims the importance of “FOR ALL Education of science and technology” for high school students. “FOR ALL Education of science and technology” means the following two points : (1) Science and Technology Education for all students including students who will not enter the departments of science and technology in universities. (2) Education for all science and technology fields. Generally it is difficult to realize “FOR ALL Education of science and technology” . In this paper, the authors propose several educational programs to overcome the difficulty.

Japan Science and Technology Corporation has developed a Web-learning service site, named Web Learning Plaza, providing free self-learning materials for engineering CPD (Continuing Professional Development). Web Learning Plaza opened on the Internet October 1, 2002. The site contains a large number of Web-based multimedia learning contents that encompass a wide range of engineering disciplines, totaling four hundred lessons. The learning contents are designed to be quick and easy to learn for engineers of college graduate or master's degree level. The number of registered learners totals around 3, 500 as of mid-February 2003, and is steadily increasing. The monthly number of learning sessions averages around ten thousand. We are projecting to create new learning materials shaped more flexible and modular.

The Silicon Sea Belt Fukuoka Project was pushed forward in Fukuoka Prefecture in 2001 and has promoted human resource development of System LSI design engineers. Under liaising of industry, academia and government, "College of System LSI, Fukuoka" was founded and QUBE (Q-shu University hardware/software Borderless system design Education program) has been started aiming to establish education system for working engineers. In this paper, results of our challenge and future prospects are described.

A new educational program was introduced to our college in 2000. This program based on the extensive knowledge in the engineering and high culture, originally intended to foster young engineers with creativity, diversity, interdisciplinarity, internationality and high practical skills. It also aimed to nourish engineers who would be engaged in developing user-friendly technologies that can coexist with nature and who can flexibly cope with current global issues such as environmental problems, food shortages and energy efficiency. Regrettably, great numbers of students don't seem to be interested in studying. We feel that there is an urgent need to improve the educational program to attract students to learn and encourage their motivations. In this paper, We would like to propose a new education model that is the Collaborative Work of Industry, Local Government and College of Technology.

Japanese English education has focused mainly on teaching passive skills such as reading and listening, whereas actual business activities in society require active skills such as writing and speaking in addition to the passive skills. This educational situation is estimated to be a reason Japanese engineers are less confident in writing and speaking than in reading and listening. This paper focuses on details of the English Technical Writing Test provided by the Japan Society of Technical Communication and emphasizes the importance of the active skills, mainly focusing on what skills should be taught in the future and how to develop these skills. This paper also stresses the necessity of learning rhetoric-related skills, concept of information words, as well as paragraph reading and writing skills based on the concept of the 3Cs (Correct, Clear, and Concise) as a means to develop technical writing skills for engineers.
