In this study, a new education teaching material using a steam locomotive model to acquire technical skills of high accuracy and high-density assembly is proposed. The proposed teaching material is processed by hand finishing, a turning process, and welding. In this teaching material, the machining and assembling accuracy are evaluated by pressure values, which are required for running, as well as the travel distance of the steam locomotive model. Thus, this teaching material can be used for introductory education for acquiring manufacturing technologies, because the importance of the machining and assembling accuracy can be understood.

Women accounts for only some 2% of civil engineers in Japan and that is significantly small compared to the engineers of other fields, or the target “30% by 2020” set by the government. However, supports for women civil engineers in Japan first began in the 1980s and is now expanding to the private firms. In this study, the statistics of women civil engineers are grasped at first. Then the activities by firms, academic societies and organization of women civil engineers are reviewed to further discuss the possibility and challenges. Conclusion includes the importance of 30-year dedication by the self-help groups of women civil engineers, and the need of awareness and leadership by the top management for effectively supporting women civil engineers.

Generally, the acquirement of professional knowledge and skills for engineering is the essence of Kosen (Japanese colleges of technology) education. This research aims to analyze the elements of quality assurance of the Kosen education system from external evaluations. This research is based on the external evaluation and accreditation data from National Institution for Academic Degrees and Quality Enhancement of Higher Education (NIAD-QE). The result from the quantitative text analysis reported that significant educational achievements of technical colleges included graduate attributes such as knowledge and ability. Furthermore, the quality elements from external evaluations were discussed compared to quality elements from internal evaluations in the Kosen from the viewpoints of the knowledge and skill acquirement for professional engineers.

This paper reports the introduction of PBLs for social implementation as compulsory subjects, the efforts in first year practice, and the analysis of their effects. In the first half-year for the fourth grade students in KOSEN, “Social Implementation Project I” is placed to learn the importance of finding issues through case studies of social Implementations and to understand the relationship between technology and society. In the latter half-year, “Social Implementation Project Ⅱ” is placed, in which students work on social implementation as a team in collaboration with partners inside or outside of our campus. It shows the fact which the student’s self-evaluation of generic skills was improved by the student’s experience of PBLs. The fact that the student’s PROG scores were improved by the experience of PBLs suggests that PBLs for social implementation have the effect of improvement of the student’s competency. It shows that the analysis in this paper provides quantitative evidence for the effects of PBL for social implementation on human resource development.

Project-based-Learning is expected to promote students’ teamwork competency. Previous study proposed an instructional method with the peer review of team contribution; however, its effectiveness on teamwork competency was not examined. Therefore, the current study examined whether the instructional method with the peer review of team contribution promotes individuals’ team competency. We provided the instructional method for three classes and ordinary PBL program for the other three classes of freshmen, in which a questionnaire survey has been conducted at the beginning and ending part of the program. The results showed that a part of students’ teamwork competency was promoted through the program, but the peer review decreased students’ fairly response to the other team members.

In recent years, expectations for nuclear energy have been increasing in Japan because of its role and responsibility as a key power source, the contribution it can make to a global nuclear renaissance, the need for energy security, and the importance of combating global warming. Ensuring and fostering good human resources is essential if the nuclear industry is to maintain itself and expand its scale. There are obstacles, however, in doing so : a declining birth rate, job-hunting problem, the wave of retirements in 2007, the declining popularity of engineering departments and particularly nuclear-related subjects, a weakening of nuclear education, and deteriorating research facilities and equipment. While nuclear-related academic, industrial and governmental parties share this recognition and are cooperating and collaborating, all organizations are expected similarly to continue their own wholehearted efforts at human resource development.

Compared to English, there is a difficulty in reading Chinese, Korean and Japanese text, because there are no relatives in these languages. Since relative pronouns and conjunctions appear at the beginning of clauses in English text, readers understand structure of sentence before comprehending the meaning of it. In the case of Japanese text, readers literally follow the meaning of sentence and then construct the relationship between segments by postpositional particles. Sentences in engineering textbooks include long and complex sentences to explain complicated matters, compared to non technical writing such as novels and essays. The authors propose the adoption of using Japanese quotation marks,「 」which are at present rarely used in engineering textbooks to show clauses or long phrase.

This paper aims to discuss the relation between risk communication and engineering ethics. While public safety has been regarded as the paramount issue in engineering ethics, the importance of risk communication in assuring public safety has been overlooked. As for the problems with risk information, the literature of engineering ethics has discussed them in mainly terms of informed consent. However, the concept of informed consent is not applicable to engineering, for it presupposes a face-to-face relationship between the sender and the receiver of risk information. In this paper I would like to argue that the concept of risk communication should be introduced into engineering ethics, and I also wish to characterize the features of a form of risk communication suitable for engineering.

Application fields of IoT systems are expanding and becoming infrastructure of information society. Therefore, development of human resources to build the IoT system and to develop the application system, and also to take advantage of the application system is expected. For human resource development, it is important to build a prototype system to deepen the understanding of IoT. In this paper, we propose a prototype construction method that can be constructed by students of engineering, agricultural, and literary departments in addition to the department of information system. Furthermore, we propose to realize the IoT education curriculum in each department by using this construction method.

We analyze the relationship between use of a learning support system for face-to-face lectures on intellectual property law and knowledge acquisition. We first describe a system that we are currently developing and operating. We next analyze the relationship between system use and knowledge acquisition over the past 5 years (FY 2013–2017) for engineering students participating in these lectures. The analysis results show that daytime students frequently used the system for mid-term and final exams, and that nighttime students tended to access the system throughout the term. Finally, we analyze relationships between login count, video system usage time, and exercise system usage times in FY 2017. The results suggest that the video system is useful for acquiring basic knowledge, and that the exercise system promotes acquisition of applied knowledge. The exercise system for studying legal texts, logical expressions, and logic circuits was well received by engineering students, suggesting that system usage facilitates understanding of legal texts. In future work, we will improve the exercise system for logical expressions and logic circuits.

YUMEKOBO (Factory for Dreams and Ideas) at Kanazawa Institute of Technology holds KIT Summer Science School for elementary, junior high, and high school students as a contribution to our community. The purpose of the KIT summer Science School is to afford younger students an opportunity to experience the science world through hands-on projects. In addition, we would like to help them to cultivate both the idea that "Science is interesting" and "To device is fun." This summer event has become such a popular annual activity that there are twice as many applicants as there is capacity. In this paper, we introduce the management style of the event and discuss the results and the improvements made to date.

Learning computer programming requires students to deal with different variations of assignments. Instructors, on the other hand, have difficulty giving students many assignments due to time constraints for marking the work of students. This study presents an online judge system to check the students’ assignments so that they can be provided with more assignments. In this system, a client doesn’t have to build a special environment for students to learn. We implemented a function to detect illicit copies on the system and announced the fact about the function to students. 125 students who had used the system received a questionnaire about the detection function and 80% of them replied positively that the system can prevent illicit copying, with 92% saying that the system is effective in learning computer programming.

This study proposes a system in which learners can find targeted learning contents efficiently and clarifies the improvement of the efficiency by using the system through simulation and learning in practice. In this system, learning support information managed by a database is defined as information to link learners and learning contents. Learning support information consists of keywords of learning contents, location and ordering information for learning contents. By using this system learners can find not only targeted learning contents but also related additional learning contents efficiently. Moreover it is possible to generate new curriculums using keywords and learning support information.

A programming ability has been required in many areas because of the progress of information technology. As a result, a programming education is becoming more important than ever before. However, there is an issue that programming exercises do not work effectively when they are introduced to entry level students. The introduction of programing education should be more attractive so that students can become interested in programming and engage in it independently. In this report, we suggest a method of small-step exercises in order to provide a learning environment in such a way that students work on exercises independently as well as actively. The questionnaire survey shows the method we implemented is very effective.
