The upbringing of creativity, problem-identifying ability, problem-solving ability, and planning ability of engineers by using logical thinking is one of important problems for developing products in Japan. The upbringing of above abilities by using logical thinking is required for graduation research and master research in university. Therefore the authors planned and practiced the new subject “Advanced Exercises for Creative Designing toward Problem Solving” that performed master research by using logical thinking. In this education subject, students performed the investigation of conventional studies, the examination of problem-solving method, the planning of research and the conduct of research about their master researches by using logical thinking methods. The results of the questionnaire made it clear to be able to bring up creativity, problem-identifying ability, problem-solving ability, and planning ability by attending the subject.

Previous study has investigated that, unlike most other fields, patent literatures are not regarded as a knowledge sources for the conception of new inventions in software field. This result shows a possibility of Japanese patent law’s laying open system is not functioning in this field. Therefore, we have conducted a survey to one of the top Japanese companies in this field which has high priority on patent activity. We have investigated that inventors who have rich experience and achievements, regard patent literatures as knowledge sources for the conception of new inventions. We also found that “high-ability searchers” and “high quality reading comprehension skill” are the key factors for the success to make outstanding engineers.

現在日本では,創造性教育への切り替えを産官学挙げて強く推進している.我々高専では,最も柔軟な思考のできると言われる16~20才の年齢層の学生を教育対象としており,また比較的少人数制(必須科目で一教室40名定員)を採っており,創造性教育に恵まれた環境である.しかし日本の長い受動的教育の経緯を一挙に転換することは難しく,学生・教師双方とも相当の負担である.そこで,新しい時代にはそれに相応しい道具すなわちマルチメディアの活用により,20~30名単位の授業を能動的にする仕組みの授業システムを設計し,その有効性を検証した.<BR>このマルチメディア支援授業は,半期15週2時限授業をPLAN段階,DO段階,CHECK段階の3段階に分け,各段階にマルチメディアを柔軟に適応することを旨として設計した.このマルチメディア活用により試験合格型から予習中心型の学習へ転換でき,従来型の授業より2~3倍の学習時間を費やしていることも検証できた.また発表後の学友の評価,自由意見の激励に感動している報告も多かった.

In the process of research of machine design textbooks in Far East Asian countries, the authors surveyed opinions of university students in Japan, China and Korea. Though students do not compare engineering textbooks from other countries, they express both positive and negative opinions about the qualities of textbooks often reflecting social situations (their job prospects, industrial policy, etc.) . Korean students using large volume textbooks want simple but comprehensive explanations. Chinese students using practical textbooks attach an importance to practicality and use in future. Japanese student using compact textbooks attach an importance to comprehensive and detailed explanations. Japanese university students have a higher psychological barrier to employ engineering textbooks written in English, than students of other countries.

Although Japan professes to be a scientific and technological country, more and more students have refused to apply to departments of engineering. From fiscal year 1992 through fiscal year 2008 the number of university applicants dropped to 71.6%. The number of applicants for engineering departments dropped to 61.1%, which is sharper than the decline in the number of total applicants. Among all faculties of national and public universities, engineering departments (first stage of individual exam) have the lowest difficulty level. Almost half of the engineering departments in national and public universities allow more than 50% of their applicants to pass the exam. The gap in difficulty level of entrance examinations between topnotch national universities and rural public universities has been expanding. The difficulty of entrance examination of medical technology departments is much higher than that of engineering ones. However, high-performing students have been enrolling in medical technology departments. For private universities, the gap in the number of engineering applicants between major metropolitan universities and rural ones has become considerable. Almost half of the high school teachers have realized the tendency of students' shying away from engineering departments. The contents of learning of engineering departments are too segmentalzed to understand, which makes it difficult for students to get an image of what they can do in their future after graduation. It is crucial for engineering departments to offer easy-to-understand information on future occupations to junior high students and high school students.

This paper offers ideas for improving engineering education by utilizing educational technology. Educational technology applies the principles of psychology. However, these principles have developed over the past decades and we have had to change our understanding of how people learn. To improve instruction, as with engineering, effort must be put into the design process. As with designing a good information system, the principle behind a good lesson must be that it is user-centered. The contexts and processes of real-life problem solving must be considered, so that learners can utilize their learning outcomes in other settings. Cultivating learners’ confidence in reaching goals through various routes is more important than teaching them a single correct route.

A flowchart template was prepared for learning chemical experiments using a freeware, Dynamic DrawTM. From deciding that the flowchart was the chart indicating the process of operations and change in the state of chemical substances, the symbols meaning substances, laboratory apparatus for accumulating substances and unit operations were mainly used in the flowcharts. The prepared template was consisted of a chip table for storing the flowchart symbols and a work sheet for drawing flowcharts. The symbols were easily able to be copied from the chip table to the work sheet. It was inferred that this template was useful for drawing flowcharts and understanding the essentials of chemical experiments from the results of a questionnaire and multiple choice tests for students.

Abstract The education system carried out at the high school attached to Tokyo Institute of Technology was described. The engineering education has given to pupils whose high school has been a technical high school for 120 years. The drastic change happened on the technical high school on 2004, when the school was selected as one of 26 Super Science High School (SSH) , of which education program was proposed by the Ministry of Education (Monbukagakusho) . In this paper the educational system of the SSH program at Tokyo Tech High School of Science and Technology was described in relation to collaboration with Tokyo Institute of Technology.

For promoting mobility of engineers across borders, there must be frameworks to recognize the equivalence of engineering education and professional registration. The first gate to the mutual recognition is to share common concepts on the relevant matters. In Japan, the image of engineers is almost equivalent to that of engineering practitioners in general. What we have to do first is to revise the public concept of engineers so that the gap between ours and global ones diminishes. International Engineering Meeting has been discussing problems of education and registration and proposed global standards that would be included in the rules and procedures. Concepts and understandings behind the proposal are compared with ours and the measures for improving our global compatibility are discussed.

自然現象の数理モデルを計算機によってシミュレーションする手法として有限要素法が発展し,現在では科学技術計算の根幹を支える手法のひとつとしてその地位を確立している.航空機の設計に初めて用いられた有限要素法は,既に半世紀ほどの開発の歴史を経て現代に至っており,その最先端技術には目を見張るものがある.一方,大学などの専門教育課程においては学部3年から大学院にかけて有限要素法を学習するカリキュラムが多く見られるが,初めて有限要素法に取り組もうとする学生は,半世紀前の学生と同様に,変分原理,仮想仕事の原理,発散定理などの難解な概念,あるいは偏微分方程式,積分方程式などの数学的表現と格闘することになる.多くの場合,これらの概念を学ぶ事と,実際の問題を解くプロセスとを関連付ける事が困難であるために,初期の段階で学習意欲が低下したり,実際に計算を正しく行う事が出来るようになった段階でも,力学問題における応用力に欠けている場合もある.本論文は,これらの状況を勘案し,「物体に荷重が作用したときに何がおこるのか?」という極めて明快な課題に対して,リアルタイムに解を求め,その結果を即時にコンピュータのスクリーンに表示できるように作成した有限要素法解析プログラムについて,その適用性と可能性を考察したものである.

We report, from the perspective of participants, about the project-based learning class where engineering and non-engineering students collaboratively tackled manufacturing. It aimed to cultivate the design thinking ability of master course students coming from various departments of Osaka University. Although we had less backgrounds of engineering or manufacturing, we succeeded in defining user needs and creating a product which meets them. We subsequently participated in an international conference on engineering design and presented another product there. Since design thinking could be applied there as well, we could win the championship. Manufacturing is a good way for students to experience problem solving, so we could gain more than simple knowledge of engineering.

IHI Corporation and Azbil Corporation have successfully carried out the lecture exchanging programs of three years, in which one company provided its in-house education course to the other company, respectively. The objectives were to complement each company’s weakness in technology education, to stimulate each company’ s educational activities, and to extend a personal network of engineers. There were several difficulties in designing lecture exchanging programs, based simply on existing in-house lectures, but we endeavored to solve the problems through the discussions from the viewpoint of benefiting engineers of both companies. This paper describes the design process and the educational effects of our programs, and the crucial points for our problem solving.

The objective of this study is to clarify the impact of explanation of effectiveness of self-learning in English through the Internet on learner’s awareness and behavior by means of an experiment. The procedure of the experiment has three steps. First of all, in the case of searching something through the internet, using an English keyword is generally more beneficial than just using a Japanese keyword was explained to learners. Then, self-learning was implemented;learners were given the restriction to use an English material. Finally, different self-learning was implemented; this time, they were allowed to use only a Japanese material. While conducting the experiment, a survey of leaners awareness and behavior was also being conducted. As a result, it was revealed that although learners understood the benefit of internet search using English keyword, they hesitated to use the method.

In this study, the numbers of earned PhDs in various countries were analyzed with macroeconomic indicators. We found out a linear relationship between the number of earned PhDs and GDP. However, Japanese value is far less than this trend. With cluster analysis, the countries were divided into 7 clusters. Comparing to the countries in the same group, who are developed economies with huge manufacturing and service industries, Japanese value is once again smaller. Historical data showed that Japanese value has already been saturated in relatively lower level comparing to the countries like Germany, UK or Korea. All analysis showed that Japanese value is significantly less than other countries. This must be further analyzed and we should take measures if needed.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering in Yonago National College of Technology has offered for the first time the experience-based learning opportunities of machining and manufacturing successfully to elementary school pupils with the support by our college volunteer students. It comprised two classes. One was that the teaching staff visited elementary school; the other that the elementary school pupils and their parents visited the college. The subjects included were arc welding, free forging, melting and casting of metals, those being quite effective enough to raising the pupil's interests. We will discuss about what subject should be selected and what problems still remain.

There have been literatures that have focused limited topics of teaching material, educational robots etc. There have been also literatures to teach control engineering in the robotics. It seems to be no reports that have discussed the framework, curriculum for system control engineering education. The present paper describes the design of curriculum for system control engineering of technical college in Japan. The feature of the curriculum is line tracer oriented. In the proposed curriculum, basic line tracers are developed to high technology tracers as grade in college advanced. Basic tracers are developed with simple logic devices. High technology tracers are controlled by microcomputers, such as H8. Students can develop line tracers based on the course programme, and it is expected that students will be more aggressive in learning technology. The paper introduces basic concept of a line tracer oriented curriculum and shows educational perspective for embedded technology. The proposed idea in the paper can be applied to other education sectors.

Engineers and general workers have been internationalized by getting jobs around the world according to the recent economic globalization. Six countries signed the Washington Accord in 1989, which recognizes the substantial equivalence of the accreditation systems for the engineering education programs among the organizations of the signatories. In 2001, Japan Accreditation Board for Engineering Education was established and now is advancing to join the Washington Accord as a member. As for the development of products and manufacturing, not only scientists and engineers but also technicians are indispensable. The higher vocational education for technicians is now becoming important for the technicians to play a role in the borderless manufacturing world. In Japan, the Polytechnic University and Colleges make higher vocational education for engineers and technicians under the authority of the administration of Health, Labor and Welfare. In the present paper, the higher educational training programs for engineers and technicians being made in the Polytechnic College are examined and compared with the standard programs in Canada in order to search the possibility of multinational agreement in these fields.
