The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the actual state of self-directed learning through content analysis of articles in Journal of JSEE from the perspective of curriculum. Analysis shows that individual self-directed learning practices are implemented horizontally across multiple subjects and programs and vertically ranging from basic to advanced levels. In addition, they have a tendency to be practiced in seminar style classes. Three case analyses on production activities and the study of engineering ethics give detailed descriptions about learning process and operational structure.

金沢工業大学夢考房の学生チームは近年国内外の各種大会で顕著な成績を収め,その教育システムについて大学の教育改革関係者の間で非常に注目を集めている.夢考房は単に知識や技能を修得する場ではなく人間形成の場である.夢考房での活動を通じて,学生は自主自立の精神,創造性,団結心,道徳国際性などを身に付ける.本稿では,夢考房についてその理念,概要,教育システムを論ずるとともに,具体例としてRoboCup-2002世界大会で準優勝を収めた学生チームの活動を取上げ,その教育効果並びに成果を紹介する.

66 years ago, US occupation forces over Japan requested 15 professors from ASEE, headed by Dr. H. L. Hazen, Prof. of MIT, to investigate and report the actual condition of engineering education in Japan which improvement would be helpful for Japan’s postwar economic revival. The content of the report was an orthodox proposal over all education for engineers, and many items are effective even today. In this article, matters on industry-university collaborative education is extracted from the report and introduced, including the author’s personal opinion.

In the age of open admission to colleges, changes need to be made to the social mission of each college. In order to maintain a high standard of education, the following issues need to be discussed and coped with in each college : the establishment of the social mission of each college ; clarification of educational goals; a system for enforcing educational programs ; evaluation method of the outcome. An activity for academic quality assurance has been introduced in the college of engineering at Shibaura Institute of Technology. The systems for improving core academic competence, including a system of advice on withdrawal, educational content and so on, were introduced into foundation courses. For education in specialized field, an educational program based on JABEE has been utilized. This program fulfills the requirements of academic quality assurance.

In 2010, Department of Information Science and Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Yamaguchi University started a logical thinking education for undergraduate students. In the subjects related to the education, students learn knowledge, skills and attitudes to foster their coherent and logical thinking abilities. These subjects were developed under the industry-academia collaboration promoted by Information-technology Promotion Agency (IPA) . This paper describes the implementation of the education and the evaluation of the educational efficiency. It contains designing educational contents and materials that reflect company needs. Emphasizing the educational effectiveness, the questionnaire results of the subject evaluation and the competence self-evaluation are included in this paper. The competence is a set of the defined behaviors that show the ability of an individual to do a job properly.

Extensive reading (ER) is proved to be an effective approach for Japanese engineering students to improve fluency in English. But it is only effective in limited conditions, and the condition in English as a foreign language (EFL) settings is widely different from English as the second language (ESL) settings, where former ER programs are conducted. This article focuses on the critical factors that separate successful ER programs in EFL settings from failure, based on the authors’ experiences of conducting a 5-year-long ER program. In a long-term sustained silent reading (SSR) program that guides students to start reading from simple stories (SSS) , reluctant EFL learners have the maximum opportunity to improve their English fluency to the required level for novice engineers.

Quick globalization increases the necessity of higher communication skill for everybody. However, in reality, modern tools such as mobile and internet spoil the face-to-face communication ability among young people. In this paper, reviewing related books of communication skill in conjunction with speaking, hearing, reading and writing is first done on English as well as on Japanese. Parallel to this, self experience-based method for intensifying communication skill is described. Emphasizing points for improving each communication skill are concretely proposed in the body.

This study adopted a flipped learning approach to blended learning as a means to encourage students to be self-learners. A self-regulated learning system was developed to support flipped learning activities. The flipped learning system comprises a video lecture and online quizzes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship among motivation belief (i.e., intrinsic value, self-efficacy), self-regulated learning strategy, the effectiveness of blended learning with a self-regulated flipped learning system, and learning outcomes. In the context of a flipped classroom, students showed significant improvement in the language proficiency measures. A well-fitting model emerged detailing the respective structures of motivation belief and learning strategies, and task value and self-efficacy were found to underpin both. Task value and meta-cognitive and cognitive strategy use were found to directly predict satisfaction as well as mediate the effects of intrinsic goal motivation and self-efficacy on satisfaction. The results suggest that flipped learning is an effective tool for EFL classrooms.

Some typical activities of the project such as design education for the mechanical engineering, motivating self-directed learning for the chemical engineering, and a small-size class for the electrical engineering are described.

The University of Tokyo established the team “The University of Tokyo Formula Factory” for “Student Formula SAE Competition of JAPAN” that started in 2003 organized by Japan Society of Automotive Engineers’ , and it has participated from the 1st competition. “Easy Drive” is assumed to be the main concept under the basic philosophy “Aim at the victory by a conception different from the others” . The team adopted the power unit with Electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (E-CVT) for the big scooter that no one uses, installing many systems of the world first, and got the 1st prize in the 7th event in 2009. How to advance the project and the effect of the personnel training by making them with new technological developments are verified.

In continuing education, it is necessary to evaluate the knowledge and skill levels the participants attain. Additionally, it is important to know how a participant's superior evaluates the subordinates' performance in the workplace. We examined the participants' (i.e. subordinates') self-evaluations and the superiors' performance-evaluations one week and, again, four weeks after our courses for embedded software engineers. The results showed that one week after ending a course, the participants mark relatively high scores in the self-evaluation task, while the superiors' evaluations attain the same level as the participants' scores four weeks after ending the course. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of the continuing education for embedded software engineers, and suggest that the participants' self-evaluations and the superiors' performance-evaluations may consist of different evaluation feedback systems.

大学における卒業研究は,課題設定とその解決方法について少人数の単位で教員から直接の指導を受け,さらにその結果を論文としてまとめ,口頭発表をするなど,総合的な教育効果を有している.しかし,卒業研究は個別の教員や研究室単位で実施されているため,教育の内容や成果について学科や学部全体としての成果を把握するのが困難である.そこで,筆者等の学科では,学生自身と教員による卒業研究での達成度評価を平成13年度に試行した.結論としては,各学生は固有の個性を有しているが,学科等での平均をとると,その個性が消えてしまい.統計処理について慎重であるべき事が判った.平成14年度では,中間発表と最終発表で評価を実施し,達成度の進歩を評価する予定である.
