In this article, “We-mode theory” is discussed from the viewpoint of social cognition. Furthermore, the mental conditions that should be observed in the relationship between We-mode and non-humans, not humans, will also be examined. Ideas of how a deep understanding of others should be created will be introduced, based on the theory of interactionism seen in social cognition. The possibility of human and non-human coexistence should also be illustrated; i.e., the possibility of coexistence between the human-like robot “Astro Boy” and the disc-shaped vacuum cleaner robot “Roomba”.

Rather poor reliability in reproducibility, i.e., less than 40 or 30% success in replication, has been revealed not only in psychology but also in the life and medical sciences. This has been driven by the strong pressure for privatization and commercialization among the academic fields. However, maintaining high standards in reproducibility is not the only approach to realize actual scientific method. Several examples have suggested the effectiveness of a pluralistic set of methods in ethology, cultural anthropology, cognitive psychology, primatology, etc. These include qualitative, rather than quantitative approaches, i.e., historical narrative, collecting anecdotes, and anthropomorphism. Methods should be subordinate to the goal of scientific researchers, and not the other way around.

In this paper, I comment on the current rise in the application of Bayesian statistics within the field of psychology, as the user views it. The merit of Bayesian statistics has recently been emphasized as a last resort to overcome the weakness of the null hypothesis significance test (NHST), which is a main issue in questionable research practices (QRPs). However, in the end, most psychologists are only users of statistics, and Bayesian statistics is only one of many tools available to them. If this is true, the issues caused by misunderstanding the p-value may also appear in Bayesian statistics as a form of posterior hacking. The “open” principles of psychology provide new hope. However, strange feelings arise in my insides when I consider the open-data policy. For example, unfairness or “free rider” problems caused by the cost asymmetry between data makers and users may soon erupt. However, it may be important for psychologists to dive into the Bayesian world rather than avoiding entering it.

Experimental psychologists and corporate researchers generally have very different goals. Whereas the former are more interested in deepening our understanding of the human mind and human behavior, the main task of corporate researchers is to bring a new product or service into reality. In this paper, how experimental psychology can assist product design and development was discussed. Experimental psychologists have three resources that are not usually employed by corporate researchers who do not specialize in psychology. These resources are: (a) skills in collecting multifaceted data from humans through the use of a wide variety of methods, (b) a general framework for understanding human functions and constraints, and (c) up-to-date knowledge on human behavior in a specific domain. The concrete steps that university psychology researchers can take to collaborate with corporate researchers were presented.

Understanding others’ facial expressions has an important role in daily emotional communication. To date, many studies, including developmental studies, have focused on emotions by using facial expressions as the stimuli. However, very few reviews have been conducted on understanding others’ facial expressions, including studies on adults, children, and infants. In this study, the ability to understand others’ facial expressions are reviewed. First, the author identified four abilities that are required for understanding others’ facial expressions. Second, studies on adults, children, and infants are reviewed with respect to each of the four abilities required for improving the understanding of others’ facial expressions. Finally, the author proposes the future direction for the study of the development of understanding others’ facial expressions.
