Fire of an approximately 1,000m^2 wooden gymnasium is investigated with the interest in the verification of the fire safety design for heavy timber construction based on the insulation effect of char layer and in the mechanism of the fast fire spread from the activation of fire alarm to flashover. The conventional char layer growing velocity, 0.6mm/min, is supported from investigation of the remaining components. The fast fire spread is attributed to the full burning of the partition wall.

The Japanese government is promoting use of wood in recent years, because of the environmental provision of carbon dioxide fixation. The authors developed “FR wood”. “FR wood” is the only technique with simply use one tree species in Japan. When considering actual application, it is necessary to verify the fire-safety of joint parts in addition to the development of member. In particular, verification of the joint with the steel frame member is important. So, the specimens of the join part were constructed and fire resistance test was conducted. The resistance performance of steel members and wood members was confirmed.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the main factors of the air temperature distribution in basin city in summer. Hadano is a basin city located in Kanagawa. At first, authors measured the air temperature of 14 points in Hadano during the summer (July 13 - August 31) in 2011. As a result, the spatial distribution patterns of the maximum and minimum temperature are different from each other. In the analyses, authors picked green coverage, ventilation condition, amount of solar radiation and elevation, as main factors of forming air temperature distributions. As a result, daytime temperature is influenced by the ventilation and nighttime temperature is strongly influenced by green cover.

This paper is a study on acoustic environmental condition and visual environmental condition for Design-Indices of contemporary churches in Japan. We report 10 cases.; 5 cases are catholic churches and 5 cases are protestant. Generally catholic and protestant have different ratio of 2 actions; preach(preaching sermon by human voice) and recitation(music) Measurement of acoustic and visual environmental condition is discussed on time for preach(voice) or recitation(music), and the Conclusion is the evident difference of 2 types of churches; catholic and protestant churches.

The Toma residence located in Chigasaki was constructed in 1930, and Nishimura Architect Company joined in the construction. Nishimura Architect Company was normally conducting design with construction, but in the Toma house the company was responsible only for the design. The Toma Family possess the design books, specifications and estimates by Nishimura Architect Company. Those documents show that the company used original specifications, considering the Western style housing.

To clarify the difference in the structural performance of the plate-type-connector, the box-type-connector, and the L-shaped-connector, the static shear loading tests of tensile brace shear walls were performed. From the tests, it was found that the plate-type-connector provides high lateral stiffness, while the structural performance of the L-shaped-connector was lower than the ones of the plate-type-connector and the box-type-connector. Regarding the relationship between the axial load of a brace and the diagonal displacement of a wood frame, the difference in initial stiffness was not detected in the specimens with 1P, 1.5P, and 2P of wall length.

Wood bracing shear walls are usually installed in not only residential houses but also medium or large-scale wooden buildings. It is no problem to provide bracings in residentials. But, in case of providing bracings in medium or large-scale wooden buildings, it will be difficult that the bracings exert its strength of shear walls which is prescribed in Japanese Building Code. The purpose of this study is to clarify the specification for exerting its strength in medium or large-scale wooden buildings throughout the racking test of full-size shear wall. And the purpose was achieved by this experiment.

This paper clarifies the followings. (1) What impact do the two destinations that have won the Blue Flag Award in Japan expect from the authentication ? (2) Which standards of the various Blue Flag standards are effective and why? From Internet surveys on the development of Blue Flag authentication, we clarified that Blue Flag is an authentication that emphasizes social issues. In addition, our interview survey on two regions in Japan revealed that there are differences in the motivation for acquiring the Blue Flag Award and in the activities and in the contents the systems of activities by local residents.

In recent years, passive designs, that acquire solar radiation from large windows during winter time, are becoming widespread. However, due to privacy issues, there are some houses in which curtains and other shading devices remain closed throughout the year. In this research, we focused on the roller blinds that can control the solar radiation and view, in response to the weather conditions and the surrounding environment, and measure the solar heat gain and the heat transfer by component of the windows with roller blinds under the actual environment.

The seismic isolation structure has a habitability problem that it tends to be vibrated when it is always used. Therefore, we have newly developed a seismic isolation device that controls vibration in the infinitesimal range. The seismic isolation device is an elastic slide bearing and an oil damper integrated, and the performance of the damper in the infinitesimal vibration range was confirmed by vibration tests. We confirmed the effect of adopting it in a building by analysis. We also conducted dynamic tests to verify the performance of the seismic isolation device and put it into practical use.

Understanding the thermal performance of windows with shading devices is important for energy saving. Using a full-scale experimental building, the thermal insulation performance (U-value) and the solar heat gain performance of windows with shading devices was measured, and the validity of the measurement method was confirmed. In addition, the indoor thermal environment and the comfort with and without shading devices were measured, and it was confirmed that the shading devices contributed to the improvement of comfort especially by realizing a uniform radiation environment.

Thin layer method is numerically effective tool to evaluate theoretical ground motions due to large-scale seismic fault, especially when fault parmeters have large complexity or soil property gradually varies in depth direction. In spite of those advantages, there remain several problems in connection with its formulation, e.g., discretization artifacts, artifical reflection of waves impinging at the bottom, and numerical instability when epicentral distance is extremely small. This paper describes some modeling techniques to improve these numerical problems and shows its validation. This method is also applied to ground motion evaluation at near-fault, surface faulting and the 2007 Noto Hanto earthquake.

The maintenance records at a certain large-scale hospital, the total floor area 75,311m2 hospital building and 12,793m2 health checkup center, are investigated. The monthly and daily data of electricity, gas and water consumption are obtained. The paper presents the features of the hospital and the outline of the buildings at first, and then annual or monthly electricity and gas consumption, including CGS operation results, and water consumption are analyzed. Then, using the daily data, the correlation between the energy consumption and the enthalpy of outside air, the difference of the data on holidays, and the annual characteristics of energy and water consumption at weekdays are presented. The paper also shows the daily maximum electric power and the restraint kW-value for the electricity demand management.

This paper reports the construction process and the architectural features of Old Adachi Villa in Hayama (Kanagawa) 1933, designed by Koichi SATO (1878-1941). This house constructed by the dry construction method called as TROCKEN BAU, and its appearance is half-timber design. Especially, the fiberboard ‘Toma-tex’ produced by Oji Paper Co., Ltd. (Tomakomai) was used at any part of this house adopting various patterns of combination, even as roof base or exterior material. These features were caused by the relationships between the owner Tadashi ADACHI who was the president of Oji Paper and the architect SATO who was a professor of Waseda University.

Woonerf (Home Zone) is now a common road sign in many European countries, but it is sometimes referred to as costly scheme to undertake. This paper demonstrates ideas for how streets can become livable spaces through the use of traffic calming devices and street furniture. The central parts of streets in Kartoffelrækkerne Housing Estate are designated as Woonerf, where there are children’s play house and picnic benches, to create living spaces for residents on the streets. Trees create chicanes, and portable pole corns, which children also use, keep themselves safe from traffic.

The purpose of study was to clarify the quality of plywood for concrete formwork with reuse of forms and the finish of concrete surface using reused plywood. In this study, an experiment on influence of reuse (up to 4 times) of plywood for conventional formwork at building construction site was carried out. Regarding the influence of reuse on the quality of plywood, bending strength, bending Young’s modulus, and surface roughness were investigated. In addition, the influence of reused plywood on gloss, color unevenness, and water absorption of the concrete surface was investigated. Moreover, in order to confirm the influence of reuse of plywood at construction site, the results of this experiment at building construction site were compared with the results of laboratory experiment conducted so far.

This study grasped the status of the formation, utilization and management of public space networks through public-private partnership in central Sapporo.As a result, the following became clear. In the various plans of Sapporo City, the policy of forming a public space network is clarified. The public-private consultation mechanism for ensuring its effectiveness and developing it has matured to the introduction of a local discussion mechanism. In conjunction with the large expansion of public facilities for people, a network was formed that organically linked underground and indoor public spaces by utilizing these mechanisms.

<p>Why "street smoking" is so controversial in cities, Tokyo? Residents have been suffered from butts of cigarette and danger of burn. Considering these situations, all cities in Tokyo have introduced code which restricts street smoking. However, the detailed contents of the code vary according to the condition of each city. Chiyoda City is the first city which fine smoking on the street, not only while walking but also while standing or sitting. On the other hand, the city has been subsidizing private sectors to set smoking spaces inside building and so on. This case study, we overlooked the codes for clean community then discussed the issues on current situation regarding street smoking and possibilities for coexistence among the various senses of value in public space in cities.</p>

<p>In this study, we survey on ready-mixed concrete shipped in Okinawa prefecture, including material temperature, concrete temperature at the time of kneading and unloading, and outside temperature. As a result, It was found that the concrete temperature at the time of unloading must be about 33℃ or less so that the concrete temperature at the time of kneading does not exceed 35℃. We also showed that random forest and LightGBM, which are a type of machine learning, can estimate concrete temperature at the time of kneading and unloading with high accuracy from the unit quantity of material, material and outside temperature.</p>

Recent flood damages in urban areas have increased the need for urban planning and building measures to respond to inundation risks. In this article, in order to obtain suggestions for building and land use management based on inundation risks, floodproof retrofitting plans are examined for two types of existing condominium models in an urban area. Then, the floodproof retrofitting work costs, and the amount of damage reduction due to floodproofing are estimated. Finally, the applicabilities of such floodproofing measures are examined by analyzing the cost-effectiveness of plans under various conditions of inundation probability.
