This paper describes folding methods of thin flat sheets as well as thin cylinders by modelling folding patterns through Japanese traditional Origami technique. New folding patterns have been deviced in thin flat squared or circular membranes by modifying so called Miura-Ori(one node with 4 folding lines). Some folding patterns in thin cylinders have newly been developed including spiral configurations. Developed foldable cylinders were made by using polymer sheets, and it has been assured that they can be folded very well. The deviced models will make it possible to construct foldable/developable space structures as well as to manufacture foldable bottles for beverages.

ETS-VII is a test satellite to perform in-orbit demonstration of rendezvous docking (RVD) technology, which will be necessary for advanced space activities in the early 21^st century. ETS-VII successfully performed autonomous RVD in the first experiment flight. But in the second experiment flight, seberal times of Z-thruster misfiring occurred and they prevented for ETS-VII to accomplish docking for three weeks. To verify all technical items, the third experiment flight was replanned on condition that firing Z-thrusters should be minimized. And we modified on-board software to continue approach in case that Z-thrusters misfiring occur. ETS-VII succeeded in the third experiment as the result of these countermeasures. We present replanning of the third experiment flight and its result in this paper.

On the purpose of achieving a human-like high energy efficient walking robot, many research projects use actuators attached on the waist or ankle joints of passive dynamic walking mechanisms. While on the other hand, we developed another type of semi-passive walking robot that is driven by the harmonic oscillation of a spring-mass system. In the mechanism, spring forces are generated at both sides of the robot by the simple harmonic motion of a spring-mass system which is oscillated by a small sized servo motor. The spring forces control the ZMP (Zero Moment Point) in the lateral direction, in sync with the swing leg, which is generated by the same forces as well. Choosing the gait cycle at the resonance frequency, significant decrease of the motor power and energy consumption is possible. Gyros, micro switches and wire displacement sensors are attached to the robot for measuring the angle of the legs, foot contact and spring extension. Gait cycle, spring forces, ZMP in the lateral direction are analyzed based on the measurements.

擦弦の振動は,弦の曲げこわさおよび内部摩擦によって大きな影響を受ける.これらの影響は種々論じられているが,擦弦の振動を固体摩擦特性の負の減衰と空気抵抗,内部摩擦などの正の減衰のバランスという本来の自励振動の立場で解析した研究は見当たらない.本論文は級数変換を伴うフーリエ級数解法によって,以上の点を解明する解析をおこなったものである.

車輪踏面形状は円弧と直線とを組合わせて設計されることが多いが,このような踏面形状に欠点が少なくない.歯車のインボリュート曲線のようになんらかの理論的な根拠をもった曲線を使って踏面形状を構成することにより,これらの欠点を是正することを試みた.トレッド部には輪軸が左右に移動してもHertz圧が変化しない曲線を,フランジ部には輪軸がヨ-イングしても2点接触をおこさない曲線を使用することを提案した.

本報は車輪踏面とレール頭面の設計に関するものである.現在の形状には複点接触,フランジ衝撃などに問題があると思われる.著者は車輪とレールの接触点位置と輪軸の横変位あるいは上下変位,ローリング角などの関数関係を任意に設定して,(1)車輪踏面形状とレール頭面形状を,(2)既定のレールに対して,車輪踏面形状を,積分(解)曲線で求める公式を導出した.特に後者に関しては数種の算出例を示し,走行性を検討した.

It is important jobs to change diapers for a bedridden patient. Changing diapers hurts prides of the patient, so that a panty toilet, that can be worn to the patient, is of importance, in which feces and urine are washed automatically. In this study, a new-type automatic washing panty toilet system is presented. The system consists of a rubber made panty toilet with tubes at both thighs and a torso, and the control system. In the panty toilet, air expands the tubes, and water leakage is prevented when washing water being inserted in the toilet. Warm air dries in the panty toilet after washing. The control system is constructed, which washes in the toilet automatically. Experimental tests have been performed. It is ascertained that the proposed system is applicable, in principle, for practical use.

A precise and stiffly stable time integration method with numerical dissipation is presented for solving MCK type equations of motion. Its algorithm is assumed that acceleration during time step is expressed as a quadratic function. Stability and accuracy are investigated by numerical analysis to find out the best parameter values of the algorithm. Characteristics of this method are compared with other methods such as Newmark, Wilson, HHT-α method, etc, which showed that this method has much better accuracy for low frequency modes, and strong dissipation for high frequency modes. Some calculation examples are shown.

This paper presents a new method for solving the Reynolds equation with a matrix form, in which the Reynolds equation is reduced analytically without approximation to infinite dimensional linear equations with unknowns related to eigen values of operator R=▽・[(h^3/6η)▽]. The paper also presents applications of the method to journal bearing problems under two boundary conditions : one is the half Sommerfeld condition and the other is the quasi Reynolds condition which assures 'continuity of the bulk flow' across the boundary. It will be shown that the present method requires much less computational time than FDM for obtaining accurate predictions.

There are many tasks in which cumbersome protective suits or large mass of objects to be manipulated obstruct "intuitive" skills such as picking up and grasping. Workers engaged in such tasks are distressed for inefficiency or early fatigue. However, the efficiency or fatigue will be improved if they can perform their intuitive skills even in those tasks by wearing an intelligent machine. Based on this idea, we proposed the concept of the wearable robot "SkilMate". This paper proposes a new type of mechanism named "wearable HEXA" as a prototype shoulder joint of the SkilMate. This mechanism is designed wearable and to give no constraint caused by geometrical factors for a wearer, so that movements of his/her shoulder necessary for the intuitive skills are not impeded and interfered. Detail of the mechanism and its design process are described, and evaluation for an experimental mechanism manufactured along the design process is demonstrated.

The Canadian Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS) that consists of 7 joints has been in operation since 2001 aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The extensive operational experience of the Space Shuttle's Remote Manipulator System (SRMS), which has 6 joints, played a significant role in the design and operation of the ISS robotics. However, optimization of the ISS robotics operation for different types of tasks utilizing the unique redundancy characteristics of the 7-joint systems is still underway. In this study, we have proposed three evaluation indices for multi-joint arm configurations in order to avoid collision with surrounding structures. Based on the evaluation of operations of the SSRMS a demonstration model, it has turned out that the proposed indices are beneficial for enhancing clearance monitoring of the arm with respect to the surrounding structures. Furthermore we have proposed an operation support display to contribute to the operational safety and mission success.

Recently, the fine positioning system has been used in the mechanical industry, and has required the improvement of positioning accuracy, reduction of positioning time, increase of carrying capacity and so on. However, the existing control method for the positioning stage may cause delay of phase response or residual vibration when disturbance or overweight acts on the system or stage drives at high speed. In order to obtain the optimum control inputs, it is necessary to grasp the dynamic behaviour of the system precisely. First, this paper deals with the transient response of the positioning stage using the linear graph theory reported in the previous papers. The simulated results of transient response of the positioning stage are compared with the experimental ones, and they are found to be in good agreement. Next, a procedure which can reduce the settling time of positioning is proposed by utilizing this method. Under the volatile economic situation in recent years, manufacturers need to have a high level of flexibility to manage a wide variety of products in varying quantities within a short delivery lead time. But in dynamically changing manufacturing environment, it is quite difficult to optimize interdivisional scheduling which reduces total manufacturing cost of all divisions such as raw material procurement, machining, assembling and shipping following fluctuations in demand. To solve this problem, we propose a new interdivisional scheduling method which decomposes the whole problem into process-dependent problems using inter-process lead time and cooperates between processes by applying Lagrangian decomposition coordination method. Additionally we designed the method which can adjust inter-process lead time automatically in order to respond to the changing demand of each item. Then we examine the effectiveness of this method by numerical experiments.

Leonardo da Vinci is not only famous as the artist who painted master pieces such as "The Last Supper" and "Mona Lisa", he is also a great scientist and engineer. He left records of many original scientific investions and explorations in books now known as Leonardo's Codices. These codices include anatomical charts, mechanical equipment, civil engineering concepts, and drawings related to architecture, astronomy, botany, and so on. The contents of these Codices are interesting for beginners who are studying mechanical engineering, although beginners are not used to recognizing a solid from a drawing. Therefore, models were reconstructed from the drawings in these codices, to be used as teaching materials for the study of mechanical engineering. In a lecture as part of a mechanics course, it was possible to generate an interest in mechanical engineering among beginners who studied the mechanics by using the reconstructed models. Similarly, an opportunity to consider the field of mechanical engineering was given to students of primary schools, junior high schools, senior high schools, and their parents, by the reconstructed models presented in the DA VINCI Festival at Toyama Prefectural University.

A phenomenon that passengers are getting sleepy is often found in running cars or trains. If a mechanism can reproduce this phenomenon, it is feasible to put insomnia patients or infants to sleep without any harmful effects. This will bring extreme benefit for insomnia patients or parents of babies. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the sleep-inducing factors of running cars or trains, and the final goal is to develop a machine which reproduces the environment to put people to sleep. For the first step of this study, we investigated the relationship between sleepiness and vibrations on several trains. The sleepability of each train is discussed by the ratio of sleeping passengers. According to the vibration analyses, the results suggest that comfortable vibration for sleep has mainly low-frequency (〜2 Hz) vibration with particular fluctuation. In addition, it is also guessed that low level jerks contribute the sleepability.

It's commonly known that a frictional force between two sliding surfaces can be reduced to excite the ultrasonic vibration on the one side of a solid body surface. The low-friction effect due to the application of ultrasonic vibration remains valid for the friction between paper and metal as well as between metals. To make a frictional decrease mechanism clear, we observed the behavior of a solid body on the vibrated surface. In the case of a frictional force is zero, the levitation distance is as the same as theoretical distance. If the amplitude of vibration is decreased, the distance between the solid body and the vibrated surface will be also decrease, and frictional force will be raised.

非線形性の大きい本質的非線形強制振動系の近似解法として,非線形復元力を断片線形関数で近似する等価断片線形系の選定の仕方と,さらにこの等価断片線形解を母解として摂動法を適用する近似解法を提案する.この方法による近似解の精度を推定するために,厳密解の知られているだ円形ダッフィング方程式にこれを適用し,漸硬ばねと漸軟ばねの場合について数値計算した結果を厳密解と比較して,満足すべき精度が得られることを示した.

The authors constructed "slipping adhesion test bogie" designed upon a new idea of measuring the coefficient of adhesion continually while running, and have observed the state of adhesion on main lines since 1985. Recently, they placed a car equipped with this bogie on a steep line where wheel-spin and skidding of rolling stock had been frequently the cause of troubles. As the result of runs of the car under various weather conditions such as fine, fog, snow, sleet and frost, influence of the weather condition upon the adhesion between rails and wheels has been made clear and evaluated quantitatively.

In this paper, the engineering evaluation method of the crucian fishing rods is performed. Principal component analysis and multiple regression analysis are performed to the results of the questionnaire about the performance of crucian fishing rods. As a result, the performance evaluation index "stiffness・strength", "weight", "top stop" are obtained and the performance evaluation equations of the crucian fishing rods are established. It is cleared that these equations are enough practical in the sight of degree of accuracy. Then, the design of crucian fishing rod is performed by using FE model. The design of the rod with targeted performance is become possible by solving the optimization problem setting the diameter of the rod as the design parameters and the Principal component score as the evaluation function. It is thought that these analysis methods are applied to the tailored design of fishing rod based on the sensory requirement of angler.
