It has been already reported that EP additives used in cutting oil for hobbing exert a notable influence on hob wear. However, systematic studies on the effect of the viscosity for cutting oil and on the effect of the viscosity of base oil on action of additives are rather rare. Since there exist generally interactions between an additive and a base oil, the difference in the viscosity of base oil should affect action of an additive. Therefore, finding optimum viscosity conditions in which hob wear and finished surface roughness of gear are minimized, will be necessary for obtaining a standard for selecting or designing an appropriate base oil for additive. From this viewpoint, the effect of viscosity of base oil, moreover, the effect of additive in base oil with a variety of viscosity on hob wear and finished surface were investigated in this paper. Experiments were carried out with a single fly tool. Hob wear tends to be smaller with higher viscosity of base oil. The viscosity of base oil hardly affected finished surface roughness. Among the additives used, the chlorinated fatty acid ester added to the high viscosity base oil showed a best performance and the optimal content of chlorine was 3%.

Movable structures can change their shape because each of the components are connected by hinges. This paper discussed a mechanism design method that can relocate hinges based on a fourbar linkage mechanism. In this paper, "structural fabric" is defined as the arrangement of the hinges, and "shape" is also defined as the structural externals made from the arrangement of the hinges. By this definition, changes of the shape by the hinge's angle without changing the hinge arrangement is different from changes in the structural fabric. On the other hand, origami can transform by changing its structural fabric because it can freely relocate creases as hinges. However, there have been no rigid body structures that have origami-like characteristics, since there has been no mechanism that can relocate hinges. So we have designed HDRM (Hinge Double Relocation Mechanism) which can relocate hinges, and have constructed movable structures by combining the HDRM. Contents of this paper is as follows; First, a mechanism design requirement that can relocate hinges by the planar linkage have became clear. The design requirement has been expanded to spatial linkage mechanisms which have been named HRM (Hinge Relocation Mechanism), through the mechanical analysis of the spherical quadric crank chain mechanism. Next, the HDRM that relocates hinges in a singular configuration has been invented by adapting the mentioned requirement. The requirement of making movable structures from HDRM has been cleared by solving the Hamiltonian path problem. Finally, from evaluations using kinematical and interference analysis on the 3D-CAD, it has been confirmed that the constructed movable structures can change into various shapes by changing the structural fabric.

The present paper describes a new design of a fluid driven microactuator which comprises a planar piston, a four-way control valve, and a mechanical feedback system that controls the output in accordance with an input displacement. Fabrication processes of the microactuator include bulk micromachining of two sheets of silicon substrate and their assembly by electrostatic bonding to glass plates. The output characteristics were measured supplying the compressed air. Generated output force was partially linear to supplied pressure and to valve displacement. However, the magnitude was asymmetric in terms of driven directions, which results from geometrical configuration essentially introduced by an anisotropic etching of the silicon. The position of the output shaft was sufficiently controlled with a designed magnification factor multiplied to the input displacement in both static and dynamic senses.

This study investigates a computer support system applying functional modeling techniques for the conceptual design phase of engineering systems. The previous paper proposed a systematic representation of design information from the viewpoints of goals, functions, and structure. This paper describes a support system of component assignment to functions by effectively using past design cases, where two case retrieval techniques are proposed. The one called "function flow simplification matching" simplifies the function flow of a case and compares it with the function flow specified by the designer. This matching technique realizes flexible case retrieval. The other is the utilization of ordinal component hierarchy data abstracted from past similar plant designs. The data is used to go into the details of design structure step by step. The feasibility of the component assignment technique is investigated by some design trials of a fluidized refuse incineration plant.

The need to develop space welding technology as fast as possible is stressed for efficient repair and construction of space development projects. It is shown that in a vacuum like in space conventional GTA welding in which the solid tungsten electrode is used could not be applied. To solve this problem, the authors propose the GHTA process using a hollow tungsten electrode. An arc discharge could be started and maintained by flowing a trace amount of argon gas from the end of the electrode. In the proposed GHTA process, the stationary arc discharge which can be used as the welding heat source, starts after several seconds of the transient arc discharge. Also, the characteristics of arc discharges and penetrations due to the GHTA process in a vacuum are clarified.

This paper mainly focused on the control system design and the control performance of the power assist lifting device used in power plant construction site. This device consists of several electric-chain-blocks, force sensors and a CPU. This mechanism is as follows. (1) Force sensors detect chain tension changes by human force. (2) The CPU calculates the required outputs from the force sensors. (3) Electric-chain-blocks move the object in the intended direction by human force. The control performance was verified through experiments using a 300 kg boiler panel that was suspended by the 2 electric-chain-blocks. A heavy control object could be moved, translated and rotated by human force using the proposed device. Positioning performance errors were suppressed to under 1 mm.

We observed the behavior of a rider on a skateboard and built experimental apparatuses. Further we analyze the characteristic by using a two dimensional analytical model. Comparing experimental and analytical results we show that primary propulsion of a skateboard is given by twisting motion of a rider. Propulsion is influenced considerably by the phase difference between twisting motion and tilting the front and rear wheel axles, that is, torque acting on a skateboard and angle of the two axles.

This paper proposes a method to estimate the radiational sound field from circular pipe structures which have vibration surface. Laplace transform and the Wiener-Hopf technique are used to analyze the sound propagation and radiation. After this analytical formulation, a computer simulation algorithm has been derived as a form of matrix equations. Experimental investigation has also been performed using model acoustic tubes to verify analytical results. Sufficient agreement has been found between the numerical calculation and the measured response, and this concludes that the method proposed here can be practically applied to estimate the acoustic behavior of some machine components, as mentioned above.

In-pipe flaw causes a failure in air conditioning pipe system, and to prevent the failure, in-pipe flaw must be diagnosed regularly. For the diagnosis of it, the type and size of the flaw are important information, and a pulsereflection method is usually used, because of its simplicity, where the type and size of in-pipe flaw have an effect on an amplitude of its echo. In this paper, to judge the type and size of in-pipe flaws, we used the two kinds of the amplitude information about the echoes. One is the amplitude of the echo that is reflected from the inner surface of the pipe with the flaws. The other is the amplitude of the echo reflected from the normal surface of the pipe. We used wavelet analysis to obtain the amplitude information about the echoes in the ultrasonic pulse reflected. We showed the results of the in pipe flaw diagnosis by using a test pipe with the artificial flaws on its inner surface and classified the results of flaw diagnosis in three types. Finally, we proposed an estimation method of the size of the in pipe corrosion with some experimental results.

This paper establishes a new formulation strategy of the flexible beam with large rotation motion. The finite element based formulation, that is previously presented for the analysis of the 'Spaghetti Problem' by authors, is extended to realize the low order and high accuracy beam model using a kind of Component Mode Synthesis Method. The deformation of the flexible beam is modeled by the combination of static mode represented by the shape function and the analytically evaluated both end clamed dynamic mode with respect to the local coordinate system. Body attached local coordinate system satisfies that x-axis of it connects both-ends of the beam. To demonstrate the efficiency and the validity of the flexible beam model in Multibody Dynamics, a 2-link flexible robot arm is modeled as the flexible multibody system consists of some rigid bodies and two flexible beams. The validity can be indicated by good agreements between the numerical simulation and the experimental results.

This paper discusses design issues of a manipulator/vehicle system floating on water, which consists of a vehicle controlled by thrusters and a manipulator mounted on it. The design of the system is very important for the control of such a system, because the controllability of the system is largely affected by the design of the system. In this paper, we propose a method to design the location of thrusters based on the concept of Translatability and Rotatability of the vehicle by actuators. The translatability (rotatability) of the vehicle represents the relationship between the output forces of thrusters and the equivalent force (moment) evaluated at the centroid of the vehicle. We first derive the relationship and then reveal that the equivalent force (moment) forms an ellipsoid. The method is natural in the sense that the force and the moment, which have dfferent dimensions, are dealt with independently. Examples illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Since a commutator of the DC-motor is divided into a number of segments to have the torque in the circumference direction, the currents in the coils of the rotor vary and have alternative waves during the rotor rotation even in a constant input voltage. The currents become sharp waves, so that they have high frequency component. This implies that the rotor shaft and the case of motor are excited electromagnetic forces with high frequency components. Since high frequency noises are loud when they are input to human ears, so that when high frequency vibrations are suppressed, noises become small. From the situation, this paper discusses a method of noise reduction of Dc Motor. In the method, the current waves are controlled to be sinusoidal waves. The method and the control algorithm are given. In order to validate the method, experimental tests are carried out. It is proven that our method is applicable to the motor noise control.

In this paper, we design a trajectory following controller by using model following based sliding mode control for small-scale unmanned helicopter. Firstly, we derive reference model that shows an ideal response. This reference model follows continuous trajectory like a circular trajectory without delay. Secondly, we design the model following based sliding mode controller that makes the response of real system follow the response of reference model. Lastly, we show the validity of the controller by the simulation and experiment.

It is important to. analyze the human task in sports such as tennis games. In this paper, a fuzzy tool for evaluating of tasks in a tennis game has been proposed based on a mathematical model and questionnaires issued to players themselves. The present method is capable of calculating human performance by summing up the fuzzy-measured PSF (performance shaping factor). This elicits the two dominant PSFs with a modified fuzzy measure learning identification algorithm (FLIA) to describe the ill-defined process of human activity in tennis games. FLIA reduces a set of PSFs until human tasks are represented clearly, and groupings of tasks are illustrated on a two-dimensional map of the dominant PSF. Characteristics of groups among players of different levels are then studied via the cluster analysis.

In order to manufacture micromachines, development of micromanipulation is indispensable. This paper treats micro handling tools as end-effectors of a micromanipulation system, and introduces three prototypes of nontweezing tools : air-sucking, electrostatically charged, and surface-tensional ones. These three can handle microparts (l0 to 500 μm in length). In particular, they can perfectly release the microparts with several methods, such as ultrasonic vibration. Through theiractual usage, we confirm the validity of the tools for micromanipulation.

In design and planning of manufacturing systems, a wide variety of models representing the manufacturing systems are required for simulation and verification from various viewpoints. These models are concurrently developed and applied to various application fields, therefore, a computerized support system is needed for concurrent development and consistency management of the various manufacturing system models. The objective of the research is to develop an object-oriented model repository aiming at supporting concurrent development and consistency management of the various manufacturing system models for production planning. Contents and structures of manufacturing system models are discussed from the viewpoint of the concurrent and hierarchical production planning problems. Model components and their relations to be stored in the model repository are proposed. A prototype of a model repository is developed and applied to the production planning problems.

Railway Technical Research Institute (RTRI) developed a bogie which has independently rotating wheels and is half as light as the conventional one, intended for the improvement of the stability of high-speed running on tangent sections and curving performance, and to render it available as a next-generation bogie on JR narrow lines. The performance of the bogie was tested on roller rigs and in field tests. From measurements, it has been verified that independently rotating wheels using a newly developed wheel profile have a gravitational restoring force and their performance met our expectations. From eigenvalues and results of simulation, the influence of the modeling level and that of the steering mechanism, on the running stability of the independently rotating wheels are clarified.

There are many cosmetic companies and visual appreciation is undertaken by human expert though, skin texture has not been investigated quantitatively and automatically so far. In this study, image processing method for analyzing skin texture is proposed. Since sulci is very important for expressing skin texture, we apply cross binarization method for extracting sulci and by matching short lines onto sulci extracted, sulci is expressed by short lines. By analyzing short lines in terms of number, direction, and so on, quantitative indices are suggested for displaying feature of sulci. We then investigate whether it is available or not to predict visual appreciation score by quantitative indices. By using multiple linear regression analysis, we find that visual appreciation score is predictable in high rate by using quantitative indices we have proposed. This method comes into practical use since January 2009.

This paper proposes a model of wide-angle spase-variant image that provides a guide for designing fovea sensor. First, Advanced Wide-Angle Foveated(AdWAF) model is formulized taking all-purpose use into account. This proposed model uses both linear coordinates and logarithmic coordinates in both planar projection and spherical projection. Thus, this model divides its 120-degree wide-angle field of view into 4 areas, such that it can represent images by various types of lens, flexibly. The first simulation compares with other lens models, in terms of image height and resolution. The result shows the AdWAF model can reduce image data by 13.5 percent, comparing with a log-polar lens model, when both have the same resolution in the fovea area. The second simulation compares with other foveation models used for the existing wide-angle foveated lens, logpolar chip and vision system. The third simulation estimates scale-invariant property by comparing with the Kuniyoshi's lens and the log-polar lens. The AdWAF model gives its planar logarithmic part complete scale-invariant property, while the Kuniyoshi's lens has about 7.6-percent error at most in its spherical logarithmic part. Moreover, the AdWAF image is extracted from an input image by wide-angle foveated(WAF) lens, based on the proposed model.

For the development of high-functional and complex mechatronics products, it is becoming necessary to manage the design process considering multi-domains such as electrical, mechanical and software specialties. However, at present, in the process of embedded software development, the software developers often have to spend their time and efforts by wasteful and unnecessary design iterations because that they don't understand the original requirements and previous designing intentions exactly. The authors predict that the mechanical designers in previous processes, don't describe the reasons, how to analyze and why to adoption technologies insufficiently. In this paper, the authors propose that the requirement model should be introduced in development process, because all designers can understand "what to make" precisely. In reference of the studies of various requirement definitions, especially object-oriented approach, the authors studied that the procedure of description in the requirement model, which is suitable for the development of high-functional and complex mechatronics products. An intelligent crane system is designed as an example to examine the possibilities of description using SysML. In conclusion, proposed requirement model is confirmed that it can surely describe the product requirement of the mechatronics product.
