複数の目合を組み合せた調査用流し網による資源調査の結果からマイワシに対する網目選択性を求めた。マイワシが多獲された目合 33,37,44,48 mm では大きな目合ほど大きな個体が獲られる網目選択の効果が認められ,その目合別体長組成から選択性曲線を推定した。選択性曲線の最適体長に該当するマイワシは鰓蓋後縁よりやや前の胴周長が網目内周長と一致することから,「鰓かかり」や「刺し」による漁獲と推察された。より大きな目合で漁獲されるマイワシは「鰓かかり」や「刺し」ではなく「絡み」で漁獲されたことが示唆された。<br>

The white muscles of cultured and wild red sea breams, Chrysophrys major, from two localities were analyzed for nonprotein nitrogenous consitiuents, such as free amino acids, lower peptides, nucleotides, trimethylamine oxide, creatine and creatinine. The distribution patterns of these compounds in cultured and wild fish were found to be very similar, although there was a relatively large difference in taurine content which was higher in the wild fish regardless of locality. Crude fat was more abundant in the muscle of cultured fish than in that of wild ones. Palatability of cultured and wild red sea breams is discussed in relation to these chemical constituents.

In the strongly acidic amino acid fraction of the muscle extract of abalone <i>Hariotis discus hannai</i> several acidic ninhydrin positive substances were detected by paper electrophoresis and paper chromatography. They were purified by ion exchange chromatography. One of them, which gave a yellow color with ninhydrin reagent and a blue color with isatin, was obtained as colorless crystals. Its chemical structure was established as L-pyrrolidine-2, 5-dicarboxylic acid (IV) by means of mass, NMR, ORD and IR spectrometries. IV has only been found in a red algs <i>Shizymenia dubyi</i> but not in animal tissues until now.

In order to elucidate the selection of spawning substrate by female cuttlefish Sepia esculenta, their behavior and trigger stimulus during a spawning sequence were examined in indoor tanks. Female approaches substrate, spurts water towards substrate, takes sediment in arms, covers eggs with sediment, spurts water towards substrate again, and undergoes egg deposition on substrate to complete one spawning. Females which finished copulation were visually attracted to more visible substrate. The height of a substrate was not an important factor for the attraction. Substrates which swung by the spurting water were not accepted by females. Females exhibited taking sediment even though there was no sediment on the tank bottom. It was concluded that female cuttlefish prefer long, fine, and immobile materials as spawning substrates.

1980年代以降の我が国のアサリ漁獲量の減少について,主要5海域の実態と原因に関する議論を再点検した。減少には埋め立てと乱獲が関与した可能性があったが,貧酸素,河川出水,冬季の波浪減耗,食害生物,病虫害,餌料環境等の関与が指摘され,最終的に原因が特定されている海域はなかった。漁獲量に影響する要因は時間とともに変化しているため,過去の減少と現在の回復不全の要因は異なる可能性があり,減少時期を特定した議論が重要と思われた。原因の特定には各要因の影響を定量的に評価した上での比較検討が必要であろう。

In order to clarify the endocrine control over the egg yolk formation, the effects of estrogenic substance (diethylstilbestrol), androgenic substance (methyltestosterone), thyroid hormone (powdered mammalian thyroid gland), and adrenocorticotropin on plasma lipid and lipoprotein in rainbow trout were examined. Levels of total lipid and lipoprotein in plasma were raised by estrogen treatment. The liver of estrogen-treated fish was hypertrophic, and contained more lipid, protein and nucleic acids. It is concluded that the lipoporotein is synthesized in liver and released into the blood under the influence of ovarian steroid hormone. On the contrary, the levels of lipid and lipoprotein were reduced by thyroid powder administration. From these results it is suspected that an endocrine correlation mechanism affects the metabolism of lipoproteins that are deposited in the oocytes.

成長や消化率に及ぼす飼料形態の影響を知るために, 摂餌促進物質を添加した同一組成のMP, EPおよびSPを, ドライベースで等率になるようにブリ稚魚に給与し, 50日間水槽飼育した。SP区の摂餌はやや不活発であったが, 全区の増重量は近似しており, 飼料効率, タンパク質効率およびエネルギー効率の区間差も小さかった。腸重量や消化率に若干の区間差はみられたが, 全区の血液性状や血清成分は類似していた。以上の結果から, 飼料形態によりブリの摂餌活性や消化過程は多少異なるが, 本試験条件下では3飼料の利用性は類似すると判断された。

The present study was conducted to determine the effects on the growth, feed conversion, and body composition of fermented defatted soybean meal (SBM) either with <i>Aspergillus oryzae</i> or <i>Eurotium repens</i> in single moist pellet diets for juvenile yellowtail Seriola <i>quinqueradiata</i>. The growth and feed efficiency of fish fed on the fermented SBM diets were superior to those fed on an unfermented SBM diet, but they were slightly inferior to those fed on a high fish meal diet without SBM. There were no marked differences in the body or blood components between any of the groups. Though neither of the fermentations of SBM with fungi affected POV, trypsin inhibitor activity, or amino acid composition, both treatments similarly increased low molecular weight-proteins and decreased oligosaccharides, resulting in higher digestibilities of dietary protein and carbohydrate. These improved digestibilities through fermentation of SBM might contribute to better growth performance in the fish.

瀬戸内海をはじめ各地の藻類養殖漁場で不足しているDINを補うための新しいタイプの施肥剤(硝酸アンモニウム溶液をゼラチンで固めたのもの)を開発した。ケースに入れない2タイプと穴の開いたケースに充填したもの2タイプを作製し,実験水槽内への溶出量を硝酸塩センサーで測定した。その結果,肥料成分60-70%の溶出に,ケースに入れないタイプはおよそ5日,ケース入りのタイプはおよそ20日を要した。このことから,施肥剤を入れるケースの穴の径と数を変えることにより肥料成分の溶出速度を調整できることが示唆された。

To elucidate the taste of “Uni”, the raw unripe gonad of sea-urchin, sensory tests were carried out on test solutions prepared by mixing L-amino acids and other authentic reagents so as to reproduce partly or wholly the natural extracts. The composition and concentration of each constituent were based on the analytical data on Bafun-uni III reported in the previous papers1) ?? 3) (Table 1). The test solution containing all constituents satisfactorily reproduced the original taste of “Uni”, showing that they cover all the essential tasting substances. Teste on the solutions from which some of the components were eliminated in a group, indicated that amino acids and nucleotides are responsible for the taste and other groups, organic bases, organic acids and glucose, make little contribution, if any. Among amino acids, only the limited members, such as glycine, alanine, valine, glutamic acid and methionine were judged to be essential for the taste and role of other amino acids was insignificant. Glycine and alanine contributed to the sweetness, valine to the characteristic bitterness, and glutamic acid, in interaction with inosinic and guanylic acids, to the meaty taste, respectively. Methionine, even though a minor component, was indispensable to development of a peculiar taste of “Uni” (Table 2), and it thickened the taste and enhanced the after-taste. This sweet-bitter amino acid was found to show a threshold value as low as 0.00125% (Table 3). Inosinic acid, together with guanylic acid, attributed to the meaty taste and hypoxanthine, the most abundunt purine base in the extracts, did not reveal any taste, as shown in Table 4. Although glycogen itself was entirely tasteless, it showed a distinct body effect by smoothing the taste of test solution.

1) Roughly speaking, the retinae of Lzteolabrax japonicus and Cyprinus carpio show more marked dark-adaptation before than after midnight, when the fish are kept in very low intensity of illumination. In Lateolabrax, the change from bright- to dark-adaptation of the cone position can be brought forth in the illumination of about 0. 04 lux before midnight and in about 0. 01 lux after that (Fig. 3). In Cyprinus, it is 0. 0005 lux before midnight and less than 0. 00006 lux after that (Fig. 4). 2) The difference of illumination between before and after midnight may be one of the reasons why the fish-gathering by light in the fishery is usually more effective before midnight than after that. 3) The difference of the illumination between the two species may show that the retina of Cyprinus is more sensitive to low illumination than that of Lateolabrax.

A total of 65 specimens of puffers comprising nine species of the suborder Tetraodontoidei were collected from Okinawa and tested for toxicity levels of the flesh, skin, liver, gonad, and intestine. <i>Chelonodon patoca, Arothron manillensis, A. nigropunctatus</i>, and <i>A. hispidus</i> showed high toxin levels in the flesh and thus should be banned from being eaten. Toxicities of the flesh of <i>A. mappa</i>, <i>A. stellatus, Pleuranacanthus sceleratus</i>, and <i>Fugu niphobles</i> were within an acceptable level. <i>Diodon hystrix</i>, which is widely consumed locally, showed no significant level of the toxin in all tissues tested. Extremely high toxicities of the flesh of <i>C. patoca</i> (520 MU/g) and<i> A. nigropunctatus</i> (184 MU/g) are worthy of special mention.

The shoal of &ldquo;Katuwo&rdquo; [<i>Euthynnus vagans</i> (Lesson)] is often found associated with either sea-birds, drifting timbers, whales, sharks, or what not. The association with sea-birds or whales is almost clcaracteristic to the shoals of this fish found in the districts south to Prov. Bosyu, whereas the shoals associated with sharks are mostly distributed in the northern districts. Such difference of the distribution corresponds to that of oceanographical conditions, particularly of salinity (Figs. 1, 2 and Tab. 1).<br> The denseness of crowd and the degree of biting are represented quantitatively with the index-numbers <i>k</i> and <i>q</i> respectively (Tabs. 2 and 3), viz., <i>k</i>=<i>m</i>+0.1<i>n</i>/<i>m</i>+<i>n</i>, where m and n are the number of records of dense and thin crowds respectively, and <i>q</i>=3<i>p</i><sub>2</sub>+2<i>p</i><sub>1</sub>+<i>p</i><sub>0</sub>+0.5<i>p</i><sub>-1</sub>+0.1<i>p</i><sub>-2</sub>/<i>p</i><sub>2</sub>+<i>p</i><sub>1</sub>+<i>p</i><sub>0</sub>+<i>p</i><sub>-1</sub>+<i>p</i><sub>-2</sub>, where <i>p</i><sub>2</sub>, <i>p</i><sub>1</sub>, <i>p</i><sub>0</sub>, <i>p</i><sub>-1</sub> and <i>p</i><sub>-2</sub> are the mumber of records of very good, good, medium, poor and very poor biting respectively. The index-number of fishing value of a shoal defined by <i>N'</i>/<i>lt</i>. where <i>N'</i>, <i>l</i> and <i>t</i> are the total number of fishes angled, the numberof rods used and the duration of angling respectively, varies with the product <i>Kq</i> (Tab. 6). But, since <i>N'</i> is not exactly proportional to <i>t</i> (Tab. 5), the above-mentioned index number is only an approximate one.<br> The relation between the degree of biting of &ldquo;Katuwo&rdquo; and the quantity of the contents of their stomach (Tab. 4) seems to be explained by taking the time required for digestion into account.

The early life histories of two puffers Takifugu rubripes and T. xanthopterus, were ecologically studied. The larvae of either or both species, not distinguishable from each other, were found in the middle or bottom layer in Ariake Sound and neighboring Chijiwa Bay in April and May. The juveniles of both species were noted in late May after becoming about 20mm in standard length at the mouths of rivers located at the head of Ariake Sound. T. rubripes stayed there until July or August, and T. xanthopterus for one month longer, under the condition of a large range of salinity. The diet of T. rubripes appeared to consist mainly of benthic animals such as crabs, zoeae, gammarids, fish lices, mysis and snails, whereas for T. xanthopterus, pelagic organisms. Many young puffers caught with commercial fishing nets are abandoned as trash fish and some efforts to conserve them should be made.
