Diet, foraging behavior, growth, sexual maturity, and spawning site selection were studied in a wild population of exotic rainbow trout <i>Oncorhynchus mykiss </i>in the spring-fed Horonai stream in Hokkaido, Japan. During spring and summer, the rainbow trout ate primarily aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, but eggs and larvae of river sculpin <i>Cottus nozawae</i> constituted 10% of the diet by number in spring. Rainbow trout typically held focal points in the stream flow and intercepted food items in the drift. Sexually mature individuals caught in late January were ages 1-5<sup>+</sup>. Males ranged 11.0-36.5cm and females 16.8-33.1cm in fork length. Females constructed spawning redds in calm riffles with fine gravel substrate. Our re-sults suggest that introductions of rainbow trout may have detrimental effects on Japanese stream fishes and other aquatic biota through interspecific competition for food and space and/or predation.

Choline-content was estimated for white and red muscles and viscera of various fishes of migrating and demersal habits, including sharks and cuttle fish. Its seasonal variation was also measured, values fairly characteristic of each fish being obtained. The amounts of choline and trimethylaminoxide(TMAO) increase generally in winter for demersal fishes and in summer for migrating ones. Decrease of freshness makes the chief cause for the increases of choline and trimethylamine (TMA) in common with different kinds of fishes. In cuttle fish and sharks, choline and TMAO contents were especially of large values, their rates of change being somewhat remarkable. Similarly to the case of salt-water fish, the choline content in fresh-water fish increased at first but decreased afterwards with the advance of putrifaction. It is noticed that TMA was formed even in the absence of TMAO, the known mother substance of TMA. The choline formation in this study was confirmed to be a bacterial doing.

The extractability of proteins from fish muscle homogenates was investigated at ionic strengths ranging between μ 0 and 0.3 (pH 6.8 ?? 7.0; ratio of muscle to extractant, 1:30) with 18 species of teleosts. Species variations were observed in the extraction patterns obtained between μ 0 and 0.05. As the ionic concentration was raised from μ 0 to 0.05, the amount of extractable protein increased rapidly in dark meat fish (migratory fish) such as sardine or chub mackerel and increased slowly in fish such as horse mackerel or lizard fish which are considered to be intermediate between dark and white meat fish. In white meat fish (bottom fish) such as Alaska pollack or nemipterid, however, the extractabilities more or less dcreased in the range of μ 0.025-0.05.Such differences between dark and white meat fish are attributable to a fraction eluting at Kav 0.2 ?? 0.3 on Sephadex G 200 filtration which is abundant in the sarcoplasm of the former (chub mackerel), and the greater solubilization of myofibrils from the latter (Alaska pollack) at ionic strengths of μ 0.025. From the results, μ 0.05 was recommended as the optimum concentraion for extracting sarcoplasmic proteins from either dark or white meat fish. The values of 0.05μ extractable protein nitrogen obtained in this study closely corresponded with those of non-protein nitrogen, the latter being an accepted marker for distinguishing between the two groups of fish.

遊漁対象種の希少性や生物学的特性の違いに着目し,北海道然別湖,朱鞠内湖および洞爺湖における遊漁者を対象に,遊漁者の満足度と釣果の関係を比較した。その結果,1)希少魚の釣果は1尾の釣果が遊漁者の満足度を大きく高める,2)希少魚の釣果はその魚種が1番の狙いの魚種でなくとも遊漁者の満足度に影響を与えうる,3)大型に育つ遊漁対象種では釣獲尾数よりも体サイズに満足度の主眼がおかれる,4)遊漁対象種に食用としての価値が高い場合,遊漁者にとって満足といえる釣獲尾数はより多くなる,という傾向が明らかになった。

2016年8月30日,台風に伴う河川増水により,岩手県の某河川沿いにある養魚場が冠水し,ギンザケ当歳魚(0+)(推定50万個体)が逸出した。このため,種間関係(競争・交雑等)を通じた生物多様性への影響が懸念され,駆除等の対策を要する。そこで,対策を講ずる基礎的知見を収集するために,ギンザケ逸出後の河川で魚類相調査を行った。ギンザケの生息個体数は6,387個体と推定され,逸出から100日後では逸出時の1.3%に減少していたが,在来種と同所的に存在し,0+で成熟する雄個体がいることが明らかになった。

The avoidance response of the jack mackerel <i>Trachurus japonicus</i> to a strobe light barrier was investigated in the laboratory, by electrocardiogram measurement.<br> The avoidance response varied with the strobe flash frequency (1.7-430 Hz) and strobe light intensity. Avoidance was greatest at flash frequencies of 5 and 10 Hz and clearly decreased as the strobe light intensity (15 Ix•s) was reduced.<br> Heart rate increased when the fish stayed in the dark section of the tank or approached the barrier, but decreased when fish avoided or passed through the barrier or strobe light. Therefore, heart rate change can be used as an index of fish response to the effect of strobe light stimuli.

Experiments were designed to see whether a dinoflagellate, Diplopsalis sp. nov, found in a toxic sample of detritus collected from a ciguatera-endemic area is the cause of ciguatera. The dinoflagellate in the detritus was separated from other materials by means of sedimentation and sieving through sieves of various mesh sizes. Bioassay of the dinoflagellaterich samples thus obtained proved that the toxicity of each sample was proportionally related to the number of the dinoflagellate cells in the sample. Subsequent extraction of the dinoflagellate sample followed by fractionation of the extracts with solvents afforded two major toxins; a diethyl ether soluble toxin and an acetone precipitable toxin. The former toxin was judged to be identical, or closely related, to ciguatoxin, a major toxin in ciguatera, on the basis of various column and thin layer chromatographic properties. A close similarity was also observed between the acetone precipitable toxin and maitotoxin, a secondary toxin isolated from ciguateric surgeonfish. Judging from these results, it was concluded that Diplopsalis sp. nov is very likely to be the cause of ciguatera.

A giant isopod <i>Bathynomus d&ouml;derleini</i>, captured by the baited trap in the Kumano-nada region, central Japan, was investigated to elucidate its geographical distribution and bathymetric occurrence.<br> <i>B. d&ouml;derleini</i> is distributed mainly at depths from 250m to 550m and completely absent from the traps set in the water shallower than 150m. So these bathynomids are classified as the littoral-bathyal benthos. The abundance of specimens of <i>B. d&ouml;derleini</i> appears to be dependent on the topographic features of bottom.<br> Summing up the informations known to date, <i>B. d&ouml;derleini</i> has not been found from the marginal seas of the northwestern Pacific, and then its geographical distribution accords with the warm Kuroshio Current area along the Pacific coasts of Japan.

As the first step to improve the off-flavor in retorted Kamaboko, the relationship between the quality of raw fish-meat and the production of hydrogen sulfide in retorted Kamaboko, the relationshop between the quality of raw fish-meat and the production of hydrogen sulfide in retorted Kamaboko was investigated. Lizard fish, <i>Saurida undosquamis</i>, white croaker, <i>Argyrosomus argentatus</i>, and frozen Surimi (frozen meat paste made from Alaska pollack, <i>Theragra charcogramma</i>) were popular raw fish for Kamaboko manufacturers and were used as the experimental raw fish.<br> The amount of hydrogen sulfide in retorted Kamaboko increased with an increase in the pH of the washed meat, prepared from raw fish-meat (white croaker) during the ice storage. Irrespective of the species of raw fish, the amount of hydrogen sulfide produced was directly related to the pH of raw fish-meat and increased with the rise of pH, when the pH of raw fish-meat was adjusted with 0.2<sub>N</sub> HCI or NaOH.Therefore, it was revealed that the manufacturing condition which reduces the pH of raw fish-meat was effective in inhibiting the pro-duction of hydrogen sulfide in retorted Kamaboko. In addition, it was estimated that for-maldehyde generated from trimethylamine oxide in Alaska pollack and lizard fish played a significant role in inhibiting the production of hydrogen sulfide in retorted Kamaboko.

Changes in plasma gonadotropin (GtH) and steroid hormone levels were investigated during ovulation induced by human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) in female goldfish. Sexually mature female goldfish maintained at 20°C under 14L10D (lights on at 0430hr) were injected with HCG at a dose of 10IU/g BW at 2100hr. Twenty-one fish out of 28 ovulated between 9 and 18 hours (0600 to 1500hr) after injection. In ovulatory fish, there was neither a significant increase nor surge in plasma GtH levels after the injection, whereas plasma testosterone and 17α, 20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one levels showed changes similar to those occurring in spontaneous ovulation. These results suggest that injected HCG acts directly on the ovary without accelerating endogenous GtH secretion, and therefore induces ovulation in a similar manner as does the ovulatory GtH surge in spontaneous ovulation.

違法・無報告(IU)漁業由来の輸入品が国内イカ産業に与えている被害を推定した。1990年8月から2016年12月の月次データを用い,需要・漁獲・価格の3本の推定式と需給関係を表す1本の恒等式から成る連立方程式モデルを構築した。先行研究で推定されているIU漁業由来のイカ類の輸入量をもとに,これらの輸入がなかった場合の輸入量について3つのシナリオを設定し,シミュレーションを行なった。その結果,IU輸入品により,イカ産業の収益金額の15-29%にあたる243-469億円が失われていると推定された。

(1) It is difficult to tear off experimentally the scales of mud-loach, Misgurnus fossilis anguillicaudatus, because of their relatively small size. If the operation is carried out unskillfully, deformed scales would oftenly be regenerated on account of presumptive damage of the scale pockets. (2) The early regenerative scales have a broad sculptureless focal area occupying almost all of the scale dimention, and they resemble the ordinary scales of Cobitis taenia. (3) Regenerative scales observed 172 days after the operation are a little smaller in the whole shape and somewhat fewer in number of circular grooves than the ordinary ones. As time goes by, the structure of the former bears resemblance to that of the latter and consequently when the breeding of the fishes is continued, it may be supposed that these regenerated scales would completely return to the ordinary ones.

The author studied on the coagulation element and time of fish-blood. The results were summarized in Table 1-2 and by these studies following phenomena were observed. The blood of fish was shown about one minute for perfect coagulation and it was remarkably shorter than that of human. In shark, partial coagulation was shown from seven to ten minutes and after that separation of corpuscle and plasma happens. It was judged as a reason of this phenomena that shark's hematocrit value was very few. The Ca content of fish blood was greater than that of human, but prothrombin and throm-boplastin-index was smaller, and especially their existence in shark was doubtful. Judging from the result, it may be said that Ca has a most effective action among the coagulation elements in fish-blood. The blood of fish contained few platelet than that of human, basiphils wanting in many fishes and these facts will be connected with coagulation of fish-blood. Generally speaking, mechanism of fish-blood is more primitive than that of mammzl for coagulation.

価格差の要因を明らかにするために,徳島産および韓国産ハモの体成分を分析した。韓国産の脂質含量(7.7~10.4%)は,徳島産(1.4~3.0%)に比べて顕著に高かった。呈味に関与する遊離アミノ酸の含有量に有意差は見られなかった。体重 0.3~0.8 kg の雌で比較したところ,韓国産は肥満度および比肝重量が高く,産卵期にすべて未成熟であったが,徳島産の一部は成熟していた。韓国産は,より低水温域に生息し,成熟開始年齢が高く,脂質を多く蓄えるため,旨味が強く,より高値で取引されると推察された。

<p> 低利用資源であるかつお節出汁殻を高付加価値利用するため,出汁殻を異なる濃度の塩酸で分解し,塩酸濃度が粗タンパク質回収率,分解液の栄養性・呈味性・機能性に及ぼす影響を分析した。粗タンパク質回収率とアミノ酸量は4.0-6.0 mol/L塩酸で最大,分子量180-500の含有量とDPPHラジカル消去活性は4.0 mol/L塩酸で最大,ペプチド量と抗変異原性は1.0-6.0 mol/L間で有意差はなかった。低分子ペプチドを最も多く含有すると思われる4.0 mol/L塩酸による分解が至適であると示された。</p>

Crossbreeding between Pseudocentrotus depressus egg and cryopreserved Anthocidaris cras-sispina sperm were performed, in order to obtain several information concerning the influence of maturation of egg and sperm donors on the morphological appearance of parental characters in hybrids. Hybrid larvae were reared up to metamorphosis at 20°C, and Chaetoceros gracilis was used as the food. Skeletal structure of hybrid larvae exhibited intermediate characters, such as incomplete compound basket body structure, structural differences in postoral rod, postero dorsal rod and posterior transverse rod. Utilization of cryopreserved sperm in the experiment, permitted the use of sperm collected during the breeding season of the paternal species. This in turn is thought to have enhanced the probability of producing intermediate characters in the hybrid larva.
