The effect of an alerting odorant on the secretion of salivary cortisol during sleep and after awakening was investigated. Salivary cortisol was assessed because this glucocorticoid represents activation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) system, which is a dominant stress reaction pathway in the body. Subjects were exposed to an alerting odorant, Thesaron®, during a 6h sleep period but not after awakening. Surprisingly, cortisol secretion after awakening was found to be suppressed, as well as during sleep. Exposure of this alerting aroma during sleep may have an impact on cortisol secretion after awakening by suppressing HPA activity after awakening.

Soft tennis originated in Japan, is selected as a club activity by many junior and high school students. Several senior elite-level competitions, e. g., nationwide amateur club championships, have been held regularly. These competitions, however, have no clear order of importance between them. Moreover, any ranking of players or pairs based on mathematical evidence has not been established. This paper proposes a novel ranking method for elite-level soft tennis players using match results. The proposed method is based on Colley's method, which can include the opponent and the margin of victory of every match in strength evaluation. The validity of the proposed method is verified based on its prediction performance.

In this paper, we made improvements and evaluated our proposed model for non-reference speech intelligibility estimation on reverberant speech, attempting to improve the estimation accuracy significantly. Our proposed method consists of a DNN for speech enhancement and a separate DNN for intelligibility estimation. The latter uses features obtained from enhanced and degraded speech to estimate intelligibility. Although previous studies have effectively estimated intelligibility for speech degraded by additive noise using similar models, they did not consider the degradation of distortion caused by reverberation. They also did not quantify the effect of various speech enhancement DNN models, the structure of the intelligibility prediction DNN, and the selection of parameters during feature calculation on estimation accuracy. Accordingly, we compared two top-of-the-line speech enhancement DNN models and used their output to train intelligibility prediction DNNs for reverberant speech while also varying the parameters used in the feature calculation. Consequently, the linear correlation coefficient between subjective and estimated intelligibility came to 0.801 with the best combination.

In this study, as a basic investigation for EEG-based visual image reconstruction, we investigated whether EEG signal features reflect shapes and colors of simple visual images which subjects viewed and whether the features can be discriminated. First, we investigated how the shapes and the colors are reflected in event-related potentials (ERP), the event-related spectrum perturbations (ERSP), and the inter-trial phase synchronization (ITC). The results showed statistically significant differences in ERP among the colors and ERP, ERSP and ITC among the shapes depending on time periods, frequency bands and electrodes. Second, based on the results, we explored learnable input data sets. Then, learnability for discriminating the shapes were shown in EEG waveforms on 100ms time periods in single trials at all channels and phase of time frequency analysis on the limited time-frequency domain and electrodes. Finally, we investigated whether two discriminators using LSTM and CNN discriminate the shapes from the learnable data for each subject. Then, it was found that accuracies of discrimination of the shapes were over a chance level with all the learnable data sets, subjects, and discriminators. We concluded that the distinct shapes can be discriminated from EEG signals by exploring appropriate features of input signals for discriminators.

Quadric analysis of frequency turn-over temperature characteristics vs. orientations of quartz crystal resonators in the vicinity of circular AT-cut plate was carried out in the temperature range from -196 to 250°C, and these characteristics were discussed in comparison with the experimental results.

In this study, we developed a capacitive seating analysis sensor using a conductive textile for evaluating a Seating Motion. Physical burden on caregivers is a common problem at nursing care sites. Developing long-term caregiving skills can help reduce the physical burden on amateur caregivers. Several quantitative evaluation studies have focused on the skills of caregivers. However, such evaluation is highly expensive and require huge area because it involves the use of motion capture systems with several 3D cameras for dynamic motion analysis. In our previous study, we developed a conductive textile sensor for measuring the seating position of a care recipient in a wheelchair. The sensor could measure either seating body pressure or distance between the buttocks and the seat. The system can measure the care recipient's motion without requiring any motion capture system. We recommend using the sensor to evaluate the skills of caregivers; the sensor output can be used to determine the seating speed of the care recipient on the chair. Herein, we report the validity of the measurement system comprising a conductive textile-based capacitive seating analysis sensor for evaluating seating in nursing care.

A tunable diode laser absorption spectrometry (TDLAS) system has been developed in order to apply it to an open atmospheric path which is often suffered from heavy scintillation. A quick scanning of the laser frequency and the digital signal processing architecture are employed to cope with it. The laser frequency is scanned over 4 ms around an absorption line of CH4 in 7μm band every 31ms.Received signal is treated with a DSP system to achieve the best SNR and also to separate the absorption signal from scintillation. Column density of CH4 is produced on every laser frequency scanning. The adjoint spectrum algorithm is employed to achieve the separating capability.

An extended-gate field effect transistor (EGFET) based creatinine sensor using an enzyme-containing silk-fibroin membrane successfully fabricated. In this experiment, we used creatinine deiminase as a detection enzyme for serum creatinine, which is known as a marker of chronic kidney disease. The fabricated biosensor showed excellent potentiometric response to creatinine over a wide range from 0.007 - 0.4 mg/mL in phosphate buffer solution, which can enable to measure creatinine concentration in blood plasma.

This paper proposed a new technique which makes the strategy trees for the derivative (option) trading investment decision based on the behavioral finance theory and optimizes it using evolutionary computation, in order to achieve high profitability. The strategy tree uses a technical analysis based on a statistical, experienced technique for the investment decision. The trading model is represented by various technical indexes, and the strategy tree is optimized by the genetic programming(GP) which is one of the evolutionary computations. Moreover, this paper proposed a method using the prospect theory based on the behavioral finance theory to set psychological bias for profit and deficit and attempted to select the appropriate strike price of option for the higher investment efficiency. As a result, this technique produced a good result and found the effectiveness of this trading model by the optimized dealings strategy.

Various types of radars have been developed and used until now—such as Pulse, FM-CW, and Spread Spectrum. Additionally, another type of radar has been proposed recently. The radar measures distance by using standing wave and has been named as “Standing Wave Radar." Standing wave radar has a shorter minimum detectable range and higher accuracy compared to other types. However, the radar can not measure distance down to zero meters like other types of radars. Minimum detectable range of the standing wave radar depends on a usable frequency range. A wider frequency range is required if we need to measure shorter distance. We show a new method for measuring distance down to zero meters without expanding the frequency range. Specifically, we derive an analytic signal, which is a complex sinusoidal signal, by processing the signals obtained from multiple detectors, and we calculate and obtain distances by Fourier transform of the analytic signal. We then verify the validity of our method by simulations based on numerical calculation. The results show that it is possible to measure distance down to zero meters. In our method, measurement errors are caused by gain deviation of the detectors. They are several cm if the gain deviations are less than ±1%. Prevalent radars still have a common defect that they can not measure distance from zero to the minimum detectable range. We expect that the defect will be eliminated by putting our method into practical use.

Presently, many of the already proposed blood circulation models are mainly partial models although they are precise models. A complete model that is a combination of these partial models are difficult to analyze because it is complicated to consider both the viscosity of blood and circulatory details at the same time. So, it is difficult to control the model parameters in order to adapt to various cases of circulatory diseases. This paper proposes a complete circulation model as a lumped electrical circuit, which is comparatively simple. In the circuit model, total blood is modeled as seven lumped capacitors, representing the functions of atriums, ventricles, arteries, veins and lungs. We regard the variation of the ventricle capacitance as the driving force of the complete circulation model. In our model, we considered only the variation of pressure between each part and the blood capacity of each part. In particular, the contraction function of the left ventricle is examined under the consideration of whole blood circulation.

This paper reviews recent advances in the terahertz technology, focusing on recent system applications and key devices to enable practical use.

Nurse Scheduling Problem (NSP) is the problem that allocating shifts (day and night shifts, holidays, and so on) for nurses under various constraints. Generally, NSP has a lot of constraints. As a result, it needs a lot of knowledge and experience to make the scheduling table with its constraints, and it has been made by the head nurse or the authority in the hospitals. Some researches for NSP using Genetic Algorithm (GA) have been reported. The conventional methods take the constraints into the fitness function. However, if it reduces the fitness value a lot to the parts of solution against the constraints, it causes useless search. Because most of chromosomes are selected in the initial population or as the change by the genetic operations. And if it doesn't reduce the fitness value so much, the final solution has some parts against the constraints. Some of them are established by the Labor Standards Act or the Labor Union Act, so the solution has to be modified. As a result, it is difficult to acquire an effective scheduling table automatically. We study the method of the coding and the genetic operations with their constraints for NSP. In this paper, we propose a new coding method and genetic operations considering the constraints. We apply this method to the NSP using actual shifts and constraints being used in a hospital. It shows that an effective scheduling table satisfying the constraints is acquired by this method.

It is quite important for Japan to maintain or promote the health condition of elderly citizens. Given the circumstances, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has established the standards for the activities and exercises for promoting the health, and quantitatively determined the exercise intensity on 107 items of activities. This exercise intensity, however, requires recording the type and the duration of the activity to be calculated. In this paper, the exercise intensities are surmised using 3D accelerometer while the subjects are walking and running. As the result, the exercise intensities were surmised to be within the root mean square error of 1.2[METs] for walking and 3.2[METs] for running respectively.

Usually, analysis of a conventional symmetrical 3-phase feed-back control system can be done using a single-phase conventional transfer function. However, analysis of 3-phase system having rotating coordinate transformations is difficult by the conventional transfer function. Because, the conventional transfer function cannot deal with the control system having the rotating coordinate transformation inserted in the feed-back loop. Therefore, in this paper, the authors propose a novel extended transfer function with the rotating coordinate transformations and analyze the system having a rotating coordinate transformations.

In this study, the temperature and displacement of printed circuit board (PCB) due to heat of mounted parts were measured by using a thermographic video system and a holographic interferometry measuring system. The relationship between temperature and displacement was studied from the experimental results.As the results, the temperature and displacement on the PCB surface have been influenced with heat of mounted components due to current flow. The distribution of temperature showed some different relationships with the characteristics of the deformation. Therefore, the holographic pattern testing method may be useful in analysis of the detailed thermal stress evaluation of PCB surface and mounted parts.

In this paper, we propose a new system reflecting user's emotion in a virtual space. In the system, a user inputs his/her emotion using 6 emotional parameters in detail, and he/she chooses some shapes of objects to exist in a virtual space. From these information, the proposed system reflects user's emotion in 6 aspects using fuzzy logic and weighted average calculation. The aspects are 1) an extent of the space, 2) background colors of the space, 3) colors of the objects, 4) size of the objects, 5) moving speed of the objects, and 6) the number of the objects. In the created virtual space, user can go forward, go back and turn as he/she likes. The system is evaluated by objective questionnaires by 13 testees and the effectiveness has been shown.

Estimated response iterative tuning (ERIT) can updated the feedforward controller so as to realize desired closed-loop responses. If ERIT can be applied to vehicle yaw-rate control of automated vehicle, good autonomous driving can be realized. However, ERIT cannot realize desired control performance in the case where the control signal velocity is saturated. To solve this problem, I propose a new data-driven tuning method for vehicle yaw-rate control. Proposed method can update the feedforward controller by using estimation method of a closed-loop transfer function. Compared to ERIT, the proposed method can realize desired control performance even when the initial steering angle velocity is saturated. Furthermore, the proposed method can predict vehicle yaw-rate/steering angle velocity responses. The validity of proposed method is verified through vehicle simulators.

Freshness evaluation of Ezoshika meat based on bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) using LCR meter is carried out to estimate the quality of the meat. An arc is extracted from a locus of measured impedance to evaluate the condition of the meat. It is revealed that freshness of the meat may be estimated from the position of center of the arc. The arcs obtained by two types of equivalent-circuit models and a simple least squares method (LSQ) are compared. It is also found that the arc extracted by the LSQ explains the measured result well.

The grid connection inverter is built in the PCS (Power Conditioning Subsystem) for the distributed power supply, such as photo voltaic system. In order to utilize the power source, it is necessary that the grid connection inverter of the PCS predicts the load and output fluctuation in customer side. Therefore, this paper investigates a load estimation in the grid connection inverter of the PCS. The proposed estimation method adds superimposing perturbative signals in the inverter reference. The validity of the proposed estimation method is experimentally verified. In addition, the perturbative signals for load estimation consist of three different frequency components. As the result, it is experimentally clarified the proposed method improves the estimation accuracy.
