Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) for mixed integer programming problems is proposed. PSO is mainly a method to find a global or quasi-minimum for a nonlinear and non-convex optimization problem, and few researches about optimization problems with discrete decision variables have been studied. In this paper, we present the treatment of discrete decision variables. To treat discrete decision variables as a penalty function, it is possible to treat all decision variables as a continuous decision variable. As a result, the penalty parameter for the penalty function is needed. In this paper, we also present how to determine the penalty parameter for the penalty function. Through mathematical and structural optimization problems, we examine the validity of PSO for the mixed decision variables.

Constraint satisfaction problem consists of the combination of some constraints, and it is a very difficult problem. The neural network is used as a method of solving constraint satisfaction problems. In this research, we proposed a method of solving constraint satisfaction problems by neural network having self-feedback. The feature of this proposed method is simplifying constraint satisfaction problems. It becomes easy to search an optimum solution by this proposed method. This proposed method was applied to N-queen problem and four-color problem which are constraint satisfaction problems. From Simulation result, this proposed method can solve the N-queen problem and four-color problem at high speed and high performance.

In the echo cancellation, the double-talk situation when both the near-end signal and far-end signal are presented degrades the performance of echo cancellation with the LMS or the NLMS algorithms. In order to obtain an acceptable performance even in the presence of the double-talk, the authors proposed the expanded correlation least mean squares (ECLMS) algorithm but this algorithm does not give a fast conver-gence characteristics still. The purpose of this paper is to derive an orthogonal ECLMS algorithm with the lattice strucure in order to speed up the convergence characteristics and to reduce the computational load for the adaptation. The validity of this algorithm is evaluated by computer simulations in the echo cancelling problem.

There have been a number of investigations into image recognition and the assessment of human physiological states using infrared thermography. Assessing a human's physiological state by infrared thermography typically exploits the skin temperature of the nasal region and forehead, whereas other parts of the face are less frequently used. The present study has developed a method of analyzing facial thermal images (FTIs) by independent component analysis (ICA), a type of blind signal processing (BSP). ICA is a well-known statistical analysis tool that estimates the original source signal from observed mixture signals. When applied to thermal images, ICA is predicted to extract blind signals such as those from other parts of the face. In this study, the authors use ICA to conduct BSP on a series of FTIs. The extracted independent components are shown to represent temperature fluctuations from the opening and closing of the eyes, respiration, truncal sites such as the cheeks and forehead, and possibility of sympathetic nervous system activity. The FTIs reconstructed after the removal of artifacts indicate the local features that the blind signal cannot extract from the original FTIs.

In general, mathematical subjects are used for programming education in universities. In this case, many students lose the interest in the programming because the students have the preconception that is difficult to program by using the mathematical expressions. Especially beginners of the programming are a tendency to lose the interest. Therefore it is pointed out to use the subjects which do not need mathematical knowledge as much as possible. In this paper the authors have tried to make animation that are generated by programs instead of the mathematical subjects in a beginners’ programming class using C language used in a wide-ranging field. The authors discuss about improvements of the interest of students for programming by the try that is to make animation by programs in a programming class and refer to its effects.

In real time communications on LAN such as FDDI utilizing the synchronous class of Timed Token Protocol (TTP), there exists a problem that the transmission delay time of synchronous data with Poisson arrivals at LAN nodes from upper layer largely increase in the range that the average load of synchronous data is close to the synchronous bandwidth. It is caused by the fact that TTP has not a function to process excess data that arrive at LAN nodes earlier than the timing determined with pre-assigned synchronous bandwidth In this paper, in order to solve the problem, we propose another data transfer protocol “Advanced Timed Token Protocol (ATTP)” of which data transfer mechanism is modified from TTP and improves the transmission delay time of synchronous data including above mentioned excess data by rotating token more quickly on LAN than TTP. Furthermore we show the effectiveness of the protocol by simulations on the model of time critical communication for manufacturing control system.

The most widely used reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms are limited to Markovian environments. To handle larger scale partially observable Markov decision processes, we propose a new on-line hierarchical RL algorithm, which is called Switching Q-learning (SQ-learning). The basic idea of SQ-learning is that non-Markovian tasks can be automatically decomposed into subtasks solvable by multiple policies, without any other information leading to good subgoals. To deal with such decomposition, SQ-learning employs ordered sequences of Q modules in which each module discovers a local control policy based on Sarsa (λ). Furthermore, a hierarchical structure learning automaton is used which finds appropriate subgoal sequences according to LR-I algorithm. The results of extensive simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of SQ-learning.

In order to comply with rapid changes of business environment, companies or organizations continuously modify contexts of their business process. Different data model will be built to support business process to be changed. In this paper, we introduce PCM (Property Centric Modeling) which facilitates data model design in accordance with business process. Context is often appeared in business process as function, persons, facilities, or materials. PCM associates each context with set of properties to build data model from those properties. Resulting data model is flexible enough for the change of context. Specific procedure of the method is illustrated, taking a sensorchip bonding process as example. Comparisons with other methodologies are also presented.

In this study, we propose an agent model based on SECI model by Nonaka for simulating knowledge propagation in organizations. In this model, complexity of knowledge is expressed as bit-tag, and worker-agent and knowledge manager agent are introduced. Some parametric studies is performed for bit-tag length, internalization rates and communication pattern of worker-agent, and evaluate acquirement of knowledge to verify the present simulation model. Furthermore, scenario simulation is implemented with respect to employment periods of worker-agent and the effectiveness of multi-agent model is shown from qualitative evaluation of knowledge variation corresponding to joining and leaving organization.

This paper proposes a concept of the adaptive asynchronous human machine system (Async-HMS) which maintains asynchronous periodic operations against user's actions for avoiding user intention. In order to find the dynamics of the operation period presented by Async-HMS, discrimination thresholds of the operation period were obtained by psychophysical experiment. According to the thresholds, three levels of fluctuation of the operation period were defined as ‘constant’, ‘unrecognizable’, and ‘recognizable’. Psychophysiological measurement was conducted on the performance of the synchronized key typing task by the three levels of the operation period. A synchronization error as performance index, the hemodynamic parameters as indices of autonomic nervous system's activity, and the amount of the senses as psychological indices were evaluated. As a result, monotonous feeling was eliminated without compromising the performance in case of `unrecognizable' fluctuations in the operation period presented by Async-HMS.

We have developed a multimedia information system for railroad passengers, that can retrieve graphics and full-color images as well as alphanumeric data. This system consists of a host computer, user terminals, and workstations for creating and editing information pages. These components are linked through a high-speed Ethernet LAN. The user terminals requires high-speed response, so JPEG compression is used in full-color images to reduce the time required to transmit images from the host computer.In September 1993, experimental user terminals were set up in Kintetsu Namba Station, Uehonmachi Station and Abenobashi Station. The tourist information on the Shima Spain Village and Ise-Shima National Park provided by these user terminals has been highly evaluated by users.

An efficient algorithm for calculating Selective Correlation Coefficient (SCC) is proposed, which is expected as stable and robust for ill-conditions in imaging: illumination change, noise, and occlusion. The SCC is calculated through a masking operation based on Increment Sign Correlation which is efficient and robust for the ill- conditions. An SSDA algorithm and initial thresholding are introduced to remove redundant computation for obtaining much more efficiency. Through many experiments with real images, from twice to 150 times efficiency in comparison with CC and the original SCC could be obtained for ill-conditioned search problems.

A solid-state pulse generator has been developed to be applicable to drive a high power pulse laser. The new technology provids a promising mean to replace the thyratrons.The pulse generator is constructed with series and parallel connection of MOS FET (Maximum Rating; 1, 000V, 8A) without any saturable reactors for sharpening the current pulse waveform. With 60-parallel and 20-series connected of FETs, the characteristics of the pulse generator are that the switching time is 38ns, the rate of rise of the current pulse is 20A/ns, and that the jitter of the turn-on time to the input signal is ±0.42ns.Appling the pulse generator with 120-parallel and 30-series connected of FETs to a 80mm bore copper vapor laser, the laser power obtained is 112W when switched pulse energy is 2J with a repetition rate of 5kHz.

In developing Cyber Physical Systems such as smart grid and smart cities, risk management technologies plays an important role on providing safe and secure service. In motion control applications, servo drive systems have widely applied to various load systems with complicated mechanisms. A robot arm with flexible joints is one of typical examples and it forms multi-mass resonant systems which generate mechanical vibration. Since such vibration gives tracking errors in motion and/or increase of settling time, the vibration suppression is indispensable to achieve the high performance robot arm motion. Many schemes such as model-based feedforward control and modern control theory-based feedback control have been proposed to overcome those problems.This paper presents a new feedforward control scheme using optimal control command shaping to suppress the resonant vibration in robot arm motion. By analyzing characteristics of the conventional position controller with the S-shaped position command, an optimal command design can be examined to eliminate the resonant vibration. Based on these analyses, a new command shaping algorithm is proposed. The proposed feedforward scheme can obtain the same vibration suppression characteristics as those by the conventional feedback schemes, regardless of the simple input position command shaping. Experimental results with a prototype show an effectiveness of the proposed control.

We have newly developed two types of 15" high resolution non-glasses 3-D displays, the one is no cross-talk 3-D display using the double image splitter technology and the other is 2-D/3-D full compatible display using the image splitter and the controllable scattering shutter technology. In this time, in the 2-D/3-D full compatible display, controllable scattering shutter is united with image splitter in order to realize simple construction and short viewing distance of the non-glasses 3-D image. Those displays adopted newly developed head tracking system. The head tracking system detects the viewer's head position without special attachment and adjusts the images automatically. So it can expands the stereoscopic area. With this combination of larger screen, higher resolution and head tracking system, the display enables viewer to have more realistic and enjoyable images.

In this study, we investigated expressive facial reactions in response to changes in the visual environment and their automatic extraction from sensors, in order to construct a comfortable level of illumination in personal living spaces. We conducted an experiment that showed that expressive facial reactions occur when illumination in the visual environment changes. We captured facial images and manually classified them as expressing or not expressing discomfort. We then conducted a second experiment that showed that automatic image processing can be used to extract and identify these expressive facial reactions. We extracted facial features and used a support vector machine to learn the classification in this experiment.

A digital book has become popular along with the popularization of electronic medium. It is needed that assessment of not only subjective assessment about readability or usability, but also objective assessment of psychosomatic health impact. The objective of this study is an objective assessment of physiological and psychological effects of reading books using electronic or paper medium. This paper focused on hemodynamic parameters. The measurement item was VAS and POMS as a psychological index and hemodynamics parameters as a physiological index. As a result, low vigorous and unreadable were significantly recognized (p<0.05) in reading a book using an electronic medium comparing with a paper medium. Cardiovascular system became active coping because of sympathetic hyperactivity in the hemodynamic reaction. By contrast, using an electronic medium did not fit into stress coping. It was also found that parasympathetic nervous system enhanced with illegibility of the sentence and fatigue by usinig an electronic medium. For all of these results, it became identified a difference in a way to manage in physiologically with reading a book using an electronic and paper medium.
