We are teaching "Fundamental Experiment on Mechatronics". In this experiment, we tried to have students prepare for the experiment by watching a short lecture video, which explains the principle of the experiment, before the day of the experiment together with reading the instruction manual. As a result, we found that while some students were able to gain sufficient understanding, others either did not watch the videos or skipped them, and thus did not fully understand the experiments. In this study, we made a video explaining the principle of the experiment using the “Yukkuri Kaisetsu” slow commentary technique often used on YouTube, etc. The students were asked to watch the video voluntarily, and the results of a questionnaire survey on the ease of understanding were reported.

A method for FEM eigenvalue problems of symmetrically laminated composite shells is developed by formulating a 15 d. o. f. flat triangular shell element under the assumption that the transverse normal strain is linear in a symmetrical lamination. A shaking test using CFRP cylindrical shells is conducted, and experimental results obtained through the test are compared with analytical ones by the proposed method. As a consequence of the experiment, vibration characteristics of symmetrically laminated Composite shells are obtained, and the validity of the proposed method for laminated composite shells is proven.

When designing systems that support remote instruction on physical tasks, one must consider requirements : 1) participants should be able to use non-verbal expressions, 2) they must be able to take an appropriate body arrangement to see and show gestures, 3) the instructor should be able to monitor operators and objects, 4) they must be able to organize the arrangement of bodies and tools and gestural expression sequentially and interactively. GestureMan was developed to satisfy these four requirements by using a mobile robot that embodies a remote instructor's actions. The mobile robot mounts a camera and a remote control laser pointer on it. Based on the experiments with the system we discuss the advantage and disadvantage of the current implementation.

This paper describes measures to suppress the temperature increase inside tunnels on urban roads. The Yamate Tunnel is a long tunnel extending a total of 18km in the center of Tokyo. The tunnel interior temperature has increased during the summer. Motorcycle riders have complained about the heat inside the tunnel. So we investigated and analyzed the causes of the temperature increase. To suppress the increase of the temperature, we installed mist spraying equipment inside the tunnel. This system successfully cooled the inside of the tunnel. Furthermore, we compared the calculated value to the measured value of the temperature in the tunnel.

There are few studies that have conducted comprehensive verification of the physiological and psychological effects of different textures of chilled confectioneries by means of biometric measurements and subjective evaluation. The effects of confectionery texture are still unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to clarify the effects of different textures on the activity of autonomic nervous system, the brain, and muscles, and emotion by simultaneously measuring changes over time in various biological information and assessing subjective evaluation given by the tasters during consumption of different types of ice cream with monaka shell with varying water content. Participants answered a subjective evaluation questionnaire and rested for 60 s, and then performed the task. The monaka ice cream consisted of 9 blocks, each of which was eaten in 20 s. Afterwards, the participants rested for 60 s and completed a subjective evaluation questionnaire. Near-infrared spectroscopy was used to measure brain activity during eating, electromyography to measure muscle activity, and electrocardiography equipment to analyze heart rate variability. Eating monaka shell with low water content significantly activated cerebral blood flow in the right hemisphere when the first and sixth blocks were eaten. A significant trend was observed in LF/HF, which is considered an index of sympathetic nerve activity. In the mastication force test, the participants chewed significantly more strongly on ice cream with a high water content monaka shell than those with a low water content. During mastication, the participants who consumed ice cream with the low water content shell tended to use slow muscles more than those who consumed ice creams with high water content shell. The questionnaire showed that both the increase in degree of emotions such as surprise and excitement and the decrease in the degree of emotions such as sadness and depression were larger when the participants consumed ice cream with a high water content shell than those with a low water content shell. The results suggest that monaka shells with a low water content induce a more relaxed state and pleasant emotions than those with a high water content.

The 1/f fluctuations are observed in many healing effects. However, it is still under consideration process as if the 1/f fluctuations induces healing. This study analyzes natural wave sound that is considered giving the healing effects, finds the existence of fluctuations similarity between time domain and frequency domain of natural sound. It proposes two types of method as the algorithm to replicate healing sound for the premise to generate pseudo natural sound as the vibro stimulation. One is the method to recomposite the maximum energy components of power spectrum. The other is the method to adopt fluctuations similarity between time domain and frequency domain.

RoboMaster Robotics Competition is an international robotics competition, which is held in Shenzhen every year. Engineers studying all over the world design their robots and compete in the game field with each other. This competition is also famous for entertainment. In this paper, we compare cultures between RoboMaster and robocon, a traditional robotics competition. In addition, we describe several technical aspects on our robots and the meaning that engineering students join in this competition.

This paper investigates a VTOL UAV with tailless wing configuration. In the previous our work for multi-rotor UAV, a trirotor geometry with four rotors was built and experimented flight in the laboratory. VTOL type UAV enables the flight without take-off and landing spaces. So, there many researches for VTOL type UAVs, but the effective configuration of wing and electric propulsion unit is not discovered. This paper proposes a tailless wing configuration combined with the trirotor geometry for VTOL UAV. The Tailless wing airplane has advantage of low friction force, simple structure and lighter than the normal airplane with same wing area. The disadvantage of tailless wing type is that low stability in pitch and yaw motions. In order to overcome these problems, a stable airfoil with low moment coefficient is used and designed the configuration the wing. The experimental model of tailless wing for VTOL UAV is built and experimented flight in the field. Experimental results show the maneuver of designed tailless wing UAV.

"Iyashi" is a term that everyone often hears of in Japan. When people get depressed or feel down, they usually want "Iyashi" so as to gain satisfied or peaceful mind. However, in consideration of the various usage and different meanings of Iyashi in the past, what and how feeling or mood, obtained from the various Iyashi methods, affects to the minds? In this report, the effect of Iyashi to the peoples' minds are analyzed, and the relationship between the means of Iyashi and the effects to the minds will be discussed for the possible application in the engineering fields.

A practical structural health monitoring has been proposed for evaluating the structural health of a whole mechanical asset by using digital twin with data collected during the operation of the asset. Digital twin can be utilized to predict the remaining useful life by estimating the variation of the physical quantity that dominates the life, even though any records of failure do no exist. However, a mechanical asset includes huge number of local hot spots where structural health should be evaluated, and accordingly, huge man-hours are required to integrate a monitoring system that evaluates the health at all the hot spots by using digital twin. A hierarchical structural health monitoring has been therefore developed to overcome this drawback. In the first stage of the health monitoring, the overview of the mechanical damage of the components included in a asset is evaluated according to a metric, D factor, that defines the cumulative damage of the components, and the assets having relatively large damage are extracted. The extracted assets are then evaluated in detail in the second stage; that is, structural health is checked at the local hot spots. The monitoring system that employs digital twin and the hierarchical health monitoring was applied to the health management of wind turbines. As the result of evaluating the structural health of the main components of wind turbines, about a hundred wind turbines can be prioritized according to the D factor. In this first stage, a surrogate model based on a machine learning was utilized for evaluating the overview of the damage with low computational cost; the approximation error of the D factor was less than 3 % by using the surrogate model. It can be therefore concluded that this practical structural health monitoring is useful for the decision making of fleet health management of mechanical assets.

Prototype remotely-operated vehicle equipped with high resolution TV monitor and underwater radiation measuring instrument was developed and actual condition of contaminated soil in the regulation pond in Fukushima was investigated. Remarkable contaminated point was observed beneath rainwater outfall of impounding reservoir(Length×Width×Depth; 112m×30m×3.5m) in the order of 3.3~5.24μSv/h. It is found that contaminated small particles in the order of 1-3mm are deposited in the polluted mud at the bottom of the reservoir and suspended by disturbance of water flow, and the contaminated zones in the order of 0.75-3.5μSv/h are distributed in a patchy fashion caused by confluent of outfall in the demarcated region(10m×10m×10m).

The present paper discusses the driving/breaking force distribution for direct yaw-moment control (DYC) of the independent steering vehicle. The objective function is the maximum value of the tire workloads. In the case of conventional four wheel steering vehicle, the algebraic expressions of the optimum driving/breaking force distribution have been derived by the authors. Based on the previous results, the optimization algorithms for the independent steering vehicle are newly developed. For the front independent steering vehicle, the binary search is employed, and this online algorithm is combined with the golden section search method for the independent four-wheel steering vehicle. The convergences are guaranteed by the convexities of these optimization problems. Numerical simulations with CarSim, a popular multi-degree-of-freedom vehicle model, are performed to prove effectiveness of the proposed control schemes.

In general, mechanical systems are stabilized on their equilibrium point. Equilibrium point is often not unique and they are continuously connected, which is an equilibrium manifold. To stabilize the mechanical system on an equilibrium manifold will enable optimal control including the selection of the stabilizing position. In this paper, we propose a controller design method that stabilizes a mechanical system on an equilibrium manifold based on vector field. The equilibrium manifold is derived from dynamic equations, and by setting an appropriate evaluation function, (1) an optimal equilibrium point from arbitrary initial value is calculated, (2) a trajectory, input and vector field are derived based on linear control theory, (3) a controller is designed using functional approximation. Simulations show that different initial values are stabilized to different equilibrium points, and experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Using a series of base oils of different viscosity grades, rotating bending fatigue tests of 0.34 % C steel plain specimens were carried out to examine the effect of oil environments on the fatigue behavior. Although the effect of oil is hardly observed in one grain size crack initiation process, its effect appears in the crack propagation process. As the main effects of oil, two actions are considered ; that is, the isolation of the atmosphere and the oil wedging action. The propagation of a crack smaller than 0.1mm is controlled mainly by the former effect. For a crack larger than 0.1mm, its behavior is controlled mainly by the latter effect. On the other hand, the effect of oil on the fatigue limit is very small.

We have developed a flapping aerial robot equipped with a mechanism of movable gravity center, aiming at controlling the air attitude. We performed a series of flight experiment to investigate how the position of the center of gravity affects air attitude of the flying robot, which was analyzed by using high-speed camera. The pitch angle is successfully controlled by changing the position of the center of gravity. It is demonstrated that a dynamic change in the center of gravity during the flight caused a sudden stop. The results suggest a possibility to realize a seamless change in the fright modes between straight and hovering frights by the movable center of gravity mechanism.

The shimmy that appears in two-wheeled vehicles has been regarded as a self-exited vibration, but this has yet to be clearly proven. Here, we provide experimental and theoretical analyses based on three experiments. It is found that the shimmy phenomenon can be clearly defined by the experimental analyses. It is impossible for previous theoretical models to describe the shimmy phenomenon. Therefore, we propose a new tire model which includes the dynamics of side force and self-aligning torque. From the results of the theoretical analyses, it is found that the model describes the shimmy phenomena not only qualitatively but also quantitatively. Furthermore we analyze the influence of the design parameters of the tire and their main influences on shimmy. Consequently, it is clarified that cornering stiffness, tire lateral and torsional rigidity, relaxation length of lateral displacement of contact patch, tire lateral damping and moment of inertia around the steering axis all have strong influences on shimmy.

The research discussed in this paper proposed a control method that imparts equivalent friction to electronic power steering (EPS) systems in order to improve the steering feel. In order to impart friction stably, the proposed method uses motor torque rather than mechanical elements to impart friction. First, the effect of friction on the steering system was considered theoretically using simple harmonic motion models, and it was demonstrated theoretically that steering responsiveness could be increased by imparting appropriate friction force to the steering system. Based on the results of this analysis, a target value for equivalent friction force to be imparted by means of EPS control system was formulated. A method of linear approximation of the friction force necessary to realize equivalent friction force based on this target value was proposed. The method was applied in an actual vehicle, and the EPS system configuration necessary for the desired effect to be obtained was examined. It was considered that a system configuration incorporating a steering torque sensor with high torsional rigidity would be necessary, and a control method for imparting equivalent friction force was proposed. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method was verified in simulations using a vehicle model and in tests involving an actual vehicle. The vehicle model simulations demonstrated that the application of the proposed method increased steering responsiveness. The vehicle tests verified that the proposed method made it possible to obtain a stable steering feel, and was also effective in improving steering feel.
