Needle insertion treatments require accurate placement of a needle tip into the target cancer. However, it is difficult to insert the needle into a lesion because of tumor displacement during organ deformation. Therefore, path planning using a needle insertion simulation to analyze deformation of an organ is important for accurate needle insertion. A frictional model for needle insertion simulation is presented in this report. In particular, we focus on a model of frictional force based on the relative velocity between a needle and liver tissue ranging from hyper to slow velocity. In vitro experiments using porcine liver were performed at several relative velocities to measure the velocity dependence of the frictional force. Sixty trials of frictional force data were used to obtain average data at each relative velocity. The model of frictional force was then developed using the averages of the experimental results. This model was defined according to relative velocity, including hyper-slow velocity. Our modeling and experimental results show that the frictional force between the tissue and the needle increased during low relative velocity (under 1.5mm/s) and became constant (over 1.5mm/s).

It is specially analyzed about the problem of the pitch of stationary sound in the acoustic analytic subjects of brass instruments. It is modeled as a combination of the conical horn elements for the trumpet. First, the end of mouthpiece is set as the closed end, the resonance frequency is calculated as a characteristic value of the modeled trumpet by the technique of Cavity Resonance. Next, when it is played, the effective input impedance at the end of mouthpiece and those relative angles are calculated. Based on these characteristics, quantitative examined considerations are added to the playing methods, and a blowing pattern is set up. Furthermore, it is calculated the virtual additional length for the end of mouthpiece. It is examined correspondence with the playing methods of brass players. This playing method is taken into consideration, the CAD system for the pitch design of trumpet is built, and a suitable example to the pitch design is shown, with the utility of the system. The validity of a blowing pattern is shown.

This paper describes a study of active noise isolation using an advanced composite board with embedded piezoelectric elements, which are used as both sensors and actuators. The identification system, which estimates the radiated sound from the voltage signals of the piezoelectric elements in the smart board, was constructed based on Rayleigh's integral formula so that no external microphone is needed for noise control. Since the control system was implemented to minimize the estimated value of noise by suppressing the vibration of the smart board, it can reduce the sound transmission through the board. The technique of self-sensing actuator was also used to reduce the number of piezoelectric need for the control. Experiments were performed and the results showed that the transmitted noise level was successfully reduced at several resonant peaks.

Grinding is mostly utilized as finishing process in production. Thus, it is required to maintain performance of grinding wheel for preventing grinding failures such as grinding burn, loading, chatter marks, and so on. Although regular dress-interval for grinding wheel is adopted in practice, if degradation of grinding performance can be detected in process, not only the best dress interval can be determined, but also no-failure grinding can be realized.Therefore, in this study, super abrasive wheel with new disk design is made smart by means of attaching sensors on disk of wheel to monitor load of grinding wheel. Also, in order to realize in-process grinding control, tool-work-velocity-control-system which is consist of microcomputer and original electro board has been developed. This system can control grain depth of cut by means of controlling relative velocity between grinding tool and workpiece. Utilizing the smart super abrasive wheel and the tool-work-velocity-control-system, cylindrical grinding experiment is executed.As the result, the combination of those developed items shows availability that they can provide continue of grinding process without any failure even if sharpness of grinding tool is degraded.

This paper presents an Omni Directional Mobile Robot which can run on off road and run over an obstacle. The robot is constructed with four crawler-roller-motor-units and called "roller crawler-type of omni-directional mobile robot". Each crawler-reller-motor-unit can be driven independently and the motion of the robot can be controlled by the speed of motors. We also designed a position and velocity control system for the robot. The robot can be automatically controlled to run in optional direction and to track an orbit. The efficiency of the mechanism and the control method has been verified by many practical running tests and computer simulations.

In this study, we measured mechanical properties of cell sheet by using uniaxial tensile test system which we developed. We applied kelvin model (viscoelastic model) which applied single cells for deriving mechanical properties such as elastic modulus and viscous modulus. Mechanical properties of Fibroblast (NIH-3T3) cell sheet and myoblast (C2C12) cell sheet were derived by fitting equation which related kelvin model to measured stress-strain curves of cell sheet. Furthermore, for confirming drag response on cell sheet mechanical properties. By deriving mechanical properties of cell sheet, we confirmed mechanical properties of cell sheet which are different from that of single cells.

Pulse detonation engine (PDE) performances were calculated. Simple relationships were derived for detonation, exhausting and ventilation to calculate the engine performances. Calculated Isp were about 20 km/s in subsonic flight and 5 km/s in supersonic flight, respectively. A spaceship with PDE and a rocket engine was conceptually designed, and its transportation performance was estimated with use of the extended Tsiolkovskii method. When the mass at take-off was 3,000 kg, 2,230 kg was carried to the altitude of 101 km.

We propose a novel car transportation system termed as iCART (i__-ntelligent c__-ooperative a__-utonomous r__-obot t__-ransporters). This system transports cars using two robots that move in coordination. This car transportation system can transport cars of any size and offers various functions such as parking, valet parking, towing service, and the transportation of cars inside a factory, onto a ferry, and in complicated parking areas. The robots in this car transportation system comprise three modules: the mobile base module, the lifter module, and the connecting module. This paper describes the details of the operation mechanism and the basic algorithm of each module. A leader-follower-type distributed motion control algorithm is applied to the proposed system and is used in an experiment performed to verify the validity of its function.

Oil derived from Jatropha is a potential alternative to fossil fuels for Diesel engines in Mozambique because it can be cheaper and more easily available than fatty acid methyl ester, though the physical properties, e.g. high viscosity, might be a problem. As an attempt to use Jatropha oil (JO) in Diesel engines, the present study mixed JO into kerosene. Engine tests as well as un-evaporating spray visualization were carried out. The results demonstrated that a single cylinder engine can be successfully operated with JO blended kerosene despite the fact that the ignition delay is slightly longer than diesel fuel. There were no significant changes of exhaust gas emissions. It is also clear that mixing JO into kerosene can contribute to the reductions of insoluble fraction and soluble organic fraction contained in particulate matter than mixing into diesel fuel.

Large overshoot sometimes occurs during use of air-spring car-body tilting by which a car-body is tilted using inflated or deflated air-springs. The large overshoot causes the contact loss between the pantograph and the contact wire. Therefore, we developed a controlling method of the overshoot by using the vertical motion damper equipped in parallel with the air-spring. The detail of the vertical motion damper, the controlling effect of the damper on the overshoot, and the overview of the running test is described in this paper.
