This paper presents a method for face recognition based on fuzzy clustering and parallel neural networks. Neural networks have been widely used for pattern recognition in various fields. However, the computing efficiency and the recognition rate decrease rapidly if the scale of neural network increases. In this paper, a new method of face recognition based on neuro-fuzzy system is proposed. In particular, the face pattern is divided into several small-scale parallel neural networks based on fuzzy clustering. Experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Degradation of XLPE cable by water trees gives rise to harmonics in the loss current. The authors are engaged in development of diagnostic methods for water tree degradation utilizing these harmonic components. As a result of this development, the following was discovered. The harmonic components occurring in the loss current provide an extremely good indication of the state of degradation. Harmonic components arise as a result of the nonlinear voltage-current characteristic of water trees. An equivalent circuit which incorporates this nonlinearity of water trees faithfully reproduces the loss current waveforms obtained in experiments. When a voltage at a frequency differing from commercial frequencies is superposed, a degradation signal occurs at a characteristic frequency.

The deterioration diagnosis for XLPE cables using low-frequency voltage has been confirmed that it is able to detect not only bridged water trees but also un-bridged water trees. However, its degraded detecting performance has not been proven.In this paper, we examined the properties of a DC leakage current and a low-frequency loss current through the use of cables with different degrees of deterioration, and studied the performance of each measurement in detecting water-tree deterioration.As a result, it has been confirmed that for a water tree that has bridged an insulator, it is possible to detect deterioration in both the DC leakage-current measurement and the low-frequency loss-current measurement. On the other hand, for a water tree that has not bridged an insulator, although deterioration signals were not obtained in the DC leakage-current measurement, as is generally known, it has been ascertained that deterioration can be detected in the low-frequency loss current measurement.The above results has made it clear that the result obtained by the method of combining low-frequency method with DC leakage current method is high reliability.

The ground area of print pattern is important for the reduction of EMI. But until now the ground area of the print pattern was not quantitativery examined. In this report we present three parameters relating to ground/power-source patterns which are important for the EMI reduction. One of them is a “BETA” ratio which is defined as the ground pattern ratio to the print board size. Our experiment shows that these ratios are greatly affect to the radiation noise.So we developed the CAD, which is useful for print pattern design, to caluculate these parameters.

This paper evaluates optimal power generation mix considering massive deployment of variable renewable energy and regional power interchange. Japan has initiated feed-in-tariff (FIT) and expected significant introduction of PV and wind power for energy self-sufficiency and climate change. Wind power resource in Japan, however, concentrates mainly on Hokkaido and Tohoku region which is remote from electricity-consuming area such as Tokyo, and facilitating the considerable deployment of wind power requires the establishment of inter-regional power transmission line. On these backgrounds, we develop optimal power generation mix model including regional electricity exchange as large-scale linear programming model with 10 million variables and 30 million constraints. Calculated results show that regional grid expansion encourages wind power installation in Hokkaido and Tohoku region for supplying it to Tokyo area where PV power and stationary battery are alternatively replaced. The grid expansion, as well, promotes the shift of PV installation to Kyushu and Shikoku region which have longer sunshine duration, and interchangeably mitigates PV deployment in other regions through the transport of PV power from those two regions.

Though violin has been widely used in classical music, violin performance involves a problem that how to determine fingering from a musical score. In fingering determination, beginners often consider the ease for playing, but intermediates take account of expressiveness as well according to their skill level grown. Therefore, we aim to develop an automatic fingering estimation method to assist both beginners and intermediates in finding their appropriate fingering. The problem of fingering estimation is basically to find a most probable state sequence, where a state represents a pattern of left hand corresponding to a musical note from the score. We define the state of left hand as a combination of four parameters. The appropriateness of states is locally defined as a state transition cost and pressing string cost. The problem is how to set the model parameters to adjust the desired skill level. We focused on that the note length affects the difference in violin fingering. In our method, appropriate fingering according to the skill level can be estimated by changing relation between the note length and expressiveness. By comparing estimated fingering with textbook's fingering and subjective evaluation, we confirmed that our method can estimate appropriate fingering for a desired skill level.

We evaluate the effectiveness of real planning and control about the traffic in Hiroshima city by simulating the traffic flows in the entire city. Our massively parallel simulation of minute behavior of individual drivers is made credible by the use of novel techniques for learning the parameters of simulation models from available data.

Two experimental studies have been conducted in order to propose practice indexes for the improvement of the embouchure of French horn players, two experimental studies have been conducted. In both studies, the same task was performed by advanced and amateur French horn players. The first study investigated the activity, while performing the above-mentioned task, of the 5 facial muscles (levator labii superioris, zygomaticus major, depressor anguli oris, depressor labii inferioris, and risorius muscles) on the right side of the face by surface electromyography, and the facial movement on the left side of the face by attaching two markers above each muscle and using two high-speed cameras simultaneously. The results of the study showed that it is possible for the four markers around the lower lip to practice indexes. The second study evaluated whether the above-mentioned markers are appropriate as practice indexes using a 3-D tracking system and questionnaires. The results showed that both the advanced and the amateur players assessed that the markers were suitable as practice indexes for improving the embouchure. This set of approaches could be useful for selecting practice indexes and developing scientific practice methods not only for the French horn but also for other instruments and other fields.

The two axis theory and the vector control based on this theory are well known. On the other hand, Yamamura proposed the phase segregation method (spiral vector method) for the analysis of induction motor, and suggested the field acceleration method (FAM). In this paper, the comparison of these analytical and control methods is investigated.At first, the equations from which the phase segregation will be derived are interpreted. In these equations, the information from 3-phase stator and rotor equations is involved. Secondly, it is clarified that the vector control system for constant rotor flux is a goal of T-I type FAM which is derived from a zero transient term condition. By using the T-I type transient equivalent circuit, the vector control system is easily obtained, because the circuit is the same as steady-state one when the amplitude of rotor flux is constant. The analytical solution of transient response for the vector control system is obtained for arbitrary initial conditions. Furthermore, the stability of T-II type FAM especially for the effect of stator resistance change is discussed by computing the torque transfer function. When the stator resistance is correctly estimated, the pole-zero cancellation occurs on the imaginary axis.

A reduction method of a lightning overvoltage on a Power Conditioning System (PCS) is investigated in this paper. The capacitors installed between the circuit and grounding terminal in the PCS determine the response against a first transient. The inductances, winding capacitances and excitation losses of the coils for the filter in the PCS should be also considered for estimating the overvoltage to ground at an input terminal of the PCS. The dominant factors of the maximum overvoltage are a grounding resistance, capacitances between a frame and output terminal of a solar panel and those between the PCS and ground. The overvoltage is decreased with decreasing the grounding resistance of the structure for the solar panels. The grounding resistance of the PCS has a minor effect on the overvoltage. The overvoltage can be reduced when a common grounding method is applied. A length of a cable between the output terminal of the solar panel and the input terminal of the PCS should be as short as possible.

Any recent application of an expert system requires an effective way to build a very large-scale knowledge base. An on-line massive document, such as a corpus, has a potential possibility to be utilized in automatically preparing such knowledge base. Provided that a natural language interface is available, a user can inquire to the acquired knowledge for a specific topic he wants to know in an interactive way.This paper first makes investigation on semantic structures required in such a corpus oriented knowledge inquiry system focusing on plan-structure and LFG representation. It then proposes a new knowledge representation framework called a PFT-network. This network was introduced to effectively acquire knowledge from corpus with reduced domain knowledge for both the input corpus and user's utterance. Experimental results of extracting knowledge are given and it is demonstrated that the presented approach suggests the feasibility in knowledge acquisition in view of understanding input sentences so that inter-relationship of knowledge is reflected in the obtained knowledge.

In this paper, we propose the State Grouping scheme for coping with the problem of scaling up the Reinforcement Learning Algorithm to real, large size application. The grouping scheme is based on geographical and trial-error information, and is made up with state generating, state combining, state splitting, state forgetting procedures, with corresponding action selecting module and learning module. Also, we discuss the Labeling Based Evaluation scheme which can evaluate the opportunity of the state-action pair, therefore, use better experience to guide the exploration of the state-space effectively. Incorporating the Labeling Based Evaluation and State Grouping scheme into the Reinforcement Learning Algorithm, we get the approach that can generate organized state space for Reinforcement Learning, and do problem solving as well. We argue that the approach with this kind of ability is necessary for autonomous agent, namely, autonomous agent can not act depending on any pre-defined map, instead, it should search the environment as well as find the optimal problem solution autonomously and simultaneously. By solving the large state-size 3-DOF and 4-link manipulator problem, we show the efficiency of the proposed approach, i.e., the agent can achieve the optimal or sub-optimal path with less memory and less time.

This paper describes a method of readability assessment for web documents. Readability is the ease in which text can be read and understood. We hypothesize that the readability is determined whether a reader can easily grasp text structures. The impression and the complexity of text are significant factors. We extract the features about impression and complexity from a plain text and additional data such as HTML tags.In order to compare effect of extracting features, we are assessing readability rank by machine learning. We conduct 5-fold cross validation for each domain, and calculate the root mean squared error between the actual rank and the estimated rank. The cross validation experiments confirm that the performance of our method is high measured. It shows effectiveness of extracting features about the impression and the complexity for readability assessment.

Noise reduction effect using decoupling capacitor with series resistor was studied. It is well known that the decoupling capacitor is a familiar noise reduction technique on a printed circuit, and its effect is limited at high frequency by some parasitic inductances such as lead, trace and so on. Some capacitors are often connected in parallel for widening its band, but its impedance grows up highly at parallel resonance frequency. In this paper, the effect of the suppression of parallel resonance by decoupling capacitor with resistor is described and the relation between band width and device parameters is shown. The reducion effect is measured and simulated about transmission characteristic and near magnetic field.

In this article, we investigated possibility to establish a recycling-based industrial system in Japan. For this purpose, a novel mathematical model was first developed for the recycling-based system by expanding input-output analysis. Utilizing this model, we clarified several significant implications on the possibility of the recycling-based system and the prices of recycled goods. Then various recycling technologies were evaluated to clarify how these technologies could contribute to establish the system as well as to mitigate global warming. Next we developed an optimization model of the entire industrial systems in Japan, including conventional and emerging technologies on waste disposal and recycling. Various institutions on the recycling system were investigated utilizing this model. These include prices of recycled goods and tradeoff relationships between promotion of recycling and reduction of CO2 emissions. In particular, evaluated results showed that shadow price of recycled goods did not necessarily become positive. We also proposed a novel institution on the recycling system as “Waste dumping permit” in Japan. In conclusion, we clarified a desirable strategy so as to establish the recycling-based system, as well as to mitigate global warming.

In this paper, we describe that brain activities associated with emoticons by using fMRI. In communication over a computer network, we use abstract faces such as computer graphics (CG) avatars and emoticons. These faces convey users' emotions and enrich their communications. However, the manner in which these faces influence the mental process is as yet unknown. The human brain may perceive the abstract face in an entirely different manner, depending on its level of reality. We conducted an experiment using fMRI in order to investigate the effects of emoticons. The results show that right inferior frontal gyrus, which associated with nonverbal communication, is activated by emoticons. Since the emoticons were created to reflect the real human facial expressions as accurately as possible, we believed that they would activate the right fusiform gyrus. However, this region was not found to be activated during the experiment. This finding is useful in understanding how abstract faces affect our behaviors and decision-making in communication over a computer network.
