We have been studying the aplication of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) for railway vehicle traction in order to reduce the weight and size of direct drive traction motor. As a part of this study establishing a current control system of PMSM suitable for railway vehicle traction should be investigated.In this paper we discuss about designing method of current control system mentioned above and suggest a method which is available under the condition of railway vehicle traction, low switching frequency and long digital calculating period. Next we investigate how to decide current response time constant Td and reach a conclusion that it is about 10ms is appropriate under some assumed condition. Then we checked this current control system for railway vehicle traction through experiments and studies of influence of parameter changing. Consequently we can recognize the current control system has satisfactory performance for railway vehicle traction.

This paper deals with the high-frequency equivalent circuits of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) driven by a PWM inverter. The leakage current (common-mode current) flows through stray capacitance among stator windings and iron core (frame) of an synchronous motor at the switching instants of inverter transistors. A high-frequency equivalent circuits of PMSM are derived based on the frequency characteristics of the high-frequency zero-phase-impedance and line-to-line-impedance of synchronous motor. The validity of the proposed equivalent circuit is confirmed by simulation considering parasitic capacitance of the inverter.

In this paper, we propose an autonomous vehicle scheduling schema in large physical distribution terminals publicly used as the next generation wide area physical distribution bases. This schema uses Learning Automaton for vehicles scheduling based on Contract Net Protocol, in order to obtain useful emergent behaviors of agents in the system based on the local decision-making of each agent. The state of the automaton is updated at each instant on the basis of new information that includes the arrival estimation time of vehicles. Each agent estimates the arriaval time of vehicles by using Bayesian learning process. Using traffic simulation, we evaluate the schema in various simulated environments. The result shows the advantage of the schema over when each agent provides the same criteria from the top down, and each agent voluntarily generates criteria via interactions with the environment, playing an individual role in the system.

This paper describes a human activity monitoring system including various MEMS sensors. Currently, health care devices are in the limelight because aging of society has been progressing and it is required that we should take care our health by ourselves without the help of younger people. For health care, a continuous monitoring system for human activity is effective. The patch type devices, which are installed directly on the body, are one of the candidates for suitable human monitoring system that watches over the daily activity and physical and mental conditions. In this paper, background of the work, current status, requests to the devices and example devices will be shown as well as the example data for activity monitoring. Finally, future demands for the monitoring system are discussed.

There have been growing demands for automatic placement of parts on printed circuit boards (PCBs). Since the parts have wide variety in size and these parts should be placed under various constraints, the automatization of parts placement is a very difficult task. The authors proposed a method using the genetic algorithm (GA) for the automatic placement on highly dense PCBs. The study was, however, done on an imaginary board. Many factors, such as gaps between parts, lining up of parts of same type, etc. were not considered.This paper presents three new coding methods for the automatic placement on the PCBs. The three proposed methods incorporate rotating angle of parts, gaps between parts, forming of parts of same type in lines as well as dense placement of parts. Actual PCBs are used for showing and comparing the effects of the new coding methods. The results show that the proposed methods are feasible for the automatic placement of parts on highly dense PCBs.

For computer aided design (CAD)/design automation (DA) for printed circuit board (PCB), automatic placement of parts has been strongly needed. It is, however, very difficult to realize the automatic placement, since the parts have wide variety in size and these parts should be placed under various constraints.This paper studies a method of placement on the PCB using genetic algorithm (GA). This paper also studies an application of a new representing method for maintaining diversity of chromosomes to the GA. Simulations are done to show the feasibility of the new automatic placement method. A chromosome is converted into multiple phenotypes by the methods.

Recently, expectations for camera-based document analysis and recognition have increased by improved performance of digital camera devices. In this paper, we propose a rotation angle estimation method using Gray-Scale Gradient Feature and Modified Quadratic Discriminant Function (MQDF). This method can recognize characters and estimate the rotation angle of those characters rapidly. As the result of the evaluation experiment using printed alphanumeric character, we have confirmed that the low dimensional feature vector is sufficient to estimate the rotation angle of characters. Also, we reduced the number of used eigenvectors of the covariance matrix to calculate the MQDF while keeping estimation accuracy.

Accurate off-line character recognition is still very important for camera based printed document analysis. Due to its inherent conceptual and technical simplicity, conventional recognition strategies relied on features extracted using square block zoning of a character image. In this paper, we propose an isotropic feature extraction method using regular hexagonal zoning and empirically confirm its effectiveness for printed and handwritten character recognition. We accomplished printed character recognition and handwritten character recognition experiments using large-scale evaluating datasets. The average accuracy was improved by 2 % in experiments using gradient features. And the effectiveness of hexagonal zoning for recognition of high stroke count characters and low-resolution characters is confirmed in both printed and handwritten character recognition by the experiments.

TCP, a current de facto standard transport-layer protocol of the Internet, cannot fully utilize the available bandwidth. Fairness between TCP flows is another important measure of TCP performance. We proposed a method for predicting the optimal size of the congestion window to avoid network congestion by using a machine learning approach. In this paper, based on the machine learning approach, we further improve the congestion algorithm with respect to utilization of the available bandwidth and fairness between TCP flows. The improvement includes bringing a size of the congestion windows closer to the optimum value, realizing fairness against congestion algorithms that aggressively use bandwidth, and adapting to the network where the available bandwidth abruptly changes. The proposed method is evaluated with respect to utilization of bandwidth and fairness between TCP flows including flows aggressively using bandwidth by simulation using NS-2.

The deterministic annealing (DA) method for vector quantization can obtain better representative vectors than the LBG, CL, FSCL and SOFM. But it has two problems. One is that quality of the results is sensitive to the reduction of parameter T which is a temperature in an annealing operation. Another is that learning time is relatively long. Recently, the equidistortion principle has been derived and it is shown effective for vector quantization. In this paper, to solve above problems, a new algoritym named DAEP (Deterministic Annealing method with Equidistortion Principle) is proposed. In the DAEP, the idea of equidistortion principle is introduced into the DA method. In the annealing operation, location of representative vectors are forced to move to the global optimum points using the equidistortion principle. Judging from quality of results and learning time, it is shown that the DAEP can obtain better results than the other methods.

Under the current deregulation of electric utility industry, power system planning has become more complex. System planners are required to study how to use the available resources to meet customer's demand economically with an acceptable reliability and quality. The integrated resource planning is emerged as one of the effective approach for this problem recently and the approach has been expanded to include the value of reliability, that is, power interruption cost. This paper is aimed to develop a flexible decision method to select a favorable plan among various transmission system expansion alternatives, not only from power supplier's view point, but also from customer's perspective including cost of interruption. Bellman-Zadeh's maximizing decision using fuzzy decision set is applied as an flexible decision method which is able to reflect the planner's intensions. Numerical examples are shown to ascertain the effectiveness of the proposed method.
