From 1922 on, many Japanese artists visited the Bauhaus and introduced it in various Japanese magazines. However, these articles were rather superficial descriptions of the Bauhaus. In contrast, Takehiko Mizutani was the first Japanese who studied at the Bauhaus and who experienced the whole range of the Bauhaus, its organization and educational program. Therefore, Mizutani can be seen as a key character for a detailed introduction of the Bauhaus in Japan. This paper aims at reexamining Mizutani's years at the Bauhaus closely to build a basis for further researches.

In this papaer, inelastic portion of steel beam-columns are modeled as a simple mechanism composed of inelastic bars and a shear panel. A hysteresis rule for the bar behaviors is also proposed in consideration of strain-hardening, softening due to Bauschinger's effect, and resistance deterioration due to local buckling failure as well. The parameters of the model are calibrated to the results of monotonic loading tests on H-shaped and box-shaped members. Then the response analysis based on the model was performed and compared with the results of the on-line earthquake response tests. It was confirmed that their global responses were well predicted by the present model.
