This paper proposes a new method: Inverse Simulation for analyzing emergent behaviors of agents in artificial societies, which model social interactions in the electronic mediated communication. Inverse Simulation utilizes Genetic Algorithms with tabu search to optimize a global evaluation function. The method is implemented in a simulator TRURL, which evolves artificial worlds of multi-agents to socially interact with each other. The micro-level agent activities are determined by both predetermined and acquired parameters. The former pa-rameters have constant values during one simulation cycle, however, the latter parameters change during the interactions. Unlike conventional artificial society models, TRURL evolves the societies by changing the predetermined parameters to optimize macro-level socio-metric measures, which can be observed in such real societies as e-mail oriented organizations and electronic commerce markets. Thus, using TRURL, we automatically tune the parameters up and observe both micro- and macro-level phenomena grounded in the activities of real worlds.

The tactile texture of water is not necessarily favourable. When 20 subjects applied 0.1mL of water and five thickener solutions to artificial skin, the favourability score for water was the lowest among the six liquids. This unfavorability is caused by non-smooth and stick-slip feel, which reflect the increase of friction coefficient and their drastic changes on wet skin. The Stribeck plots show that the rupture of a fluid film on human skin can induce the stick-slip feel during application. These findings could potentially be applied for the design of cosmetic products and cleansing products.

In the graying Japanese society, monitoring health-related human data with sensors embedded in the living environment is quite meaningful in terms of emergency response and of long-term health management. In using the body data monitoring system daily at home, the lack of invasiveness during the monitoring and the maintenance of the system are of great importance. We have proposed the method to surmise the sleep stages of sleeping subjects by measuring the heartbeats and the respirations without invasiveness using the pneumatic method with an air mattress. This method, however, has a problem in the maintenance, since it requires periodic refilling of the air into the mattress. In this paper, another pneumatic method, which applies silicon tubes instead of the air mattress, is proposed. The change of S/N ratio in heartbeat and respiration signals, while having the environmental noises increased, are compared among a room with wooden flooring, another with tatami mats, a bath tub, and a toilet room. The result shows that both the pulse waves and the breaths can be measured with the accuracy of around 30dB, and the identification of each pulse from among the pulse waves is also feasible, under the condition that the environmental noises in the room with wooden flooring, that with tatami mats, the bath tub, and the rest room are 0.01G, 0.09G, 100ml, and 0.01G respectively.

This paper validates a mathematical model of McKibben pneumatic artificial muscle (PAM) systems which has been presented. Using PAMs manufactured by ActiveLink, FESTO and Kanda Tsushin Kogyo, it illustrates the validation results of whether to simulate their behaviors.

The measurement of angular velocity and angular acceleration in sports biomechanics is usually based on cinematography. But this method dose not have good accuracy. Authors previously developed angular velocity and angular acceleration measurement system, which used 12 accelerometers. But this system is tedious, beacause of mounting the large number of accelerometers.This paper proposes a measurement system using 9 accelerometers in sports, which accurately measures the rotation motion. This measurement system uses the extended Kalman filter. The accuracy of this method was examined by simulation and experiments.
