This paper reports a case of "cognitive counseling" in which an undergraduate student received support and training for learning from a statistics textbook. She took a required introductory statistics course and had difficulty in understanding the textbook. The goal of the counseling sessions was to enhance her skills for understanding statistics textbooks and acquiring enough knowledge to pass the final examination. The support and training in the counseling sessions included the selection of learning topics, use of learning strategies, and understanding textbooks on her own. At the end of several sessions, she showed improvement in her skills in reading the statistics textbooks and she passed the final examination.
