Recent increase of semiconductor power converter systems brings about harmonic problems. In a single phase power converter, a capacitor-filtered rectifier is used to derive DC voltage from an AC commercial power source. This converter generates harmonic currents and its power factor is very low. In order to reduce harmonic currents and compensate the input power factor, we propose a novel switching method, called the simple partial switching method (SPSM), for a single phase AC to DC converter. A control device of the converter switches once in every half cycle of an AC commercial power source by this SPSM. The switching timing is decided by the input power factor and by the odd order harmonic estimation function of the input current. The estimation function is defined as the harmonics ratio compared with the harmonic currents standard. Experimental results clarify that our SPSM converter reduces harmonic currents and compensates the input power factor.

This paper presents a position sensorless drive of a brushless dc motor with a sinusoidal flux distribution. The estimation of position and emf is performed by using the integration of the current differences between the actual motor and model. The estimation speed is calculated by the differential calculus of the estimated position. The stability of the proposed algorithm and the design of the estimation gains are explained and it is shown that the parameter differences do not give serious effects on the estimation characteristics.In the experimental results using a 6-pole 1.2kW test motor, the speed control range from 35 to 1500rpm is obtained. To verify the proposed algorithm, the estimation and speed control characteristics are shown. Furthermore, the starting characteristics of the motor from arbitrary rotor position are shown.

In order to realize the mapping from spatial information to temporal information, Temporal Smoothing (TS) Learning is proposed. In this learning, the output of a learning unit, to which sensory signals are given as input, is trained to be smooth along time. In other words, the learning unit is trained so as that the second time derivative of the output itself becomes 0.This learning can be applied to integrate local sensory signals into an analog spatial signal. It also can be used that an agent learn evaluation function in delayed reinforcement learning on behalf of TD Learning(8)(7) when only one target state is chosen. When a neural network was employed as a learning unit and visual signals were given as inputs directly, the hidden neurons in the neural network represented spatial information and had a adaptability of changing the representation according to the agent's motion characteristics.

This paper proposes a hybrid control of trajectory planning for a desired trajectory and collision avoidance based on an optimization problem for a wheeled mobile robot. In the proposed method, the priority of trajectory planning for the desired trajectory and collision avoidance is modified using the priority variable α. The priority variable α is designed by solving the optimization problem with constraints. As a constraint condition, the range of the priority variable α where the robot does not collide with multiple obstacles is derived. Under this constraint condition, the priority variable α with the highest priority of trajectory planning for the desired trajectory is selected as the optimal value. As a result, the velocity commands considering trajectory planning for the desired trajectory and collision avoidance are calculated in real time. The effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed via experimental results.

Magnetization reversal motors (MRMs) have been proposed as motors with lower power losses. MRMs comprise the same configuration as interior permanent magnet synchronous motors; however, a low coercive force core is applied to the stator. Driving an MRM requires a pulse current for magnetizing the stator core. In this paper, a bipolar pulse current magnetizer is proposed for driving MRMs Moreover, the relationship between passive components is reported in terms of voltage, current, and circuit constant. Finally, this paper presents experimental verification of the proposed magnetizer using an inductive load to simulate a single phase of an MRM.

In the resonance ratio control, which is a well-known excellent technique for vibration suppression and disturbance rejection control of torsional systems, the estimation speed of the disturbance observer was assumed to be much faster than the resonance frequency of the controlled object. However, too fast disturbance observer sometimes causes implementation problem. In this paper, we give the optimal speed of the disturbance estimation and propose a novel technique, “slow resonance ratio control”. It enables us to design the speed controller and the vibration suppression controller completely independently.

It has been known that a state equation of a blushless DC motor is a nonlinear one. Recently, new linear state equation and a position and velocity sensorless control system with the full-order observer based on the equation has been proposed. But the pole assignment of the observer has not been presented clearly. In this paper, we propose an adaptive sliding observer for this linear state equation and present clearly the pole assignment of the sliding observer for robust flux estimation with estimated velocity error. The simulation shows that the proposed system is very useful.

We evaluated the quantitative relationship between the subjective stress value and heart rate variability. The mean values of R-R interval (RRI) and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), which were reported to be markedly affected by stress, were used as heart rate variability. The following mental workload was performed so as to give wide range loads to the subjects: presentation of research, asking questions in research presentation, research presentation practice, and supine rest. The subjective stress value was obtained as serial values from 1 to 5 by a newly-developed questionnaire. The correlation between the stress value and RRI or RSA when such wide range workload are given was evaluated. There was a high correlation between the subjective stress value and RRI (correlation coefficient, -0.637), but not between the subjective stress value and RSA (coefficient, -0.319) Signal processing of RRI was simpler than that of RSA. These results suggest the usefulness of RRI as an index of the subjective stress value.

By specifically designating penetrations rates of advanced meters and communication technologies, devices and systems, this paper introduces that the penetration of advanced metering is important for the future development of electric power system infrastructure. It examines the state of the technology and the economical benefits of advanced metering. One result of the survey is that advanced metering currently has a penetration of about six percent of total installed electric meters in the United States. Applications to the infrastructure differ by type of organization. Being integrated with emerging communication technologies, smart meters enable several kinds of features such as, not only automatic meter reading but also distribution management control, outage management, remote switching, etc.

An interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) is characterized by high efficiency in a wide range of applications. However, when operating at high speeds, torque ripple and rotor loss occur because of the spatial harmonics generated by fluctuations in the airgap permeance. This study demonstrates the suppression of torque ripple and harmonic loss by magnetic wedges using finite element analysis (FEA). First, the authors examined the torque and loss characteristics by varying the slot opening width and relative permeability of the magnetic wedge. Results indicate that the torque ripple can be suppressed even if the opening width is widened to half the slot pitch. However, this improvement effect saturates when the relative permeability of the magnetic wedge becomes larger than µr = 10. Furthermore, the authors confirmed the effect of the magnetic wedge by visualizing the harmonic components of the eddy current loss. The findings reveal that the eddy current loss represents a trade-off between the stator and rotor when using the magnetic wedge.

Experimental studies and analytic theories are presented on a steam share between exhausted air and exhausted fuel from phosphoric acid fuel cells.The steam share depends on a fiow rate of air and fuel. The share characteristics can be explained by a steam transport mechanism in which steam carried with air and fuel are combined with steam permeated through an electrolyte layer.The mechanism is applied to the published analytic theory for fuel cell performance. The revised theory can calculate steam share between air and fuel at each part of a cell. The calculated steam share between exhausted air and exhausted fuel at typical operating conditions of a fuel cell plant is presented.A simplified method for calculating steam share is developed and shown to give almost the same results with the detailed theory for fuel cell performance.

Conductive polymer coated micro-cantilever array made by reel-to-reel continuous fiber process as the electrical contact components for woven electronic textile was investigated. We report the novel cantilever releasing method using air injection and the results of patternable CYTOP and organic conductive polymer using nanoimprinting method. The conductive organic material used in this study is PEDOT:PSS (poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) poly(4-styrenesulfonate)). Micro-cantilever contact array is realized to compose the electrical circuit through the large area woven textile. The contact resistance of 480 Ω is hold on for over 500 times. Contact resistance measurements revealed that an electric current begins to flow with smaller contact force for PEDOT:PSS coated cantilever array structure than for PEDOT:PSS film structure. There is no appreciable wear on cantilever surface due to its movability after 10<SUP>3</SUP> cycles contact test with 0.5 N contact force. Based on these results, PEDOT:PSS coated micro-cantilever array have excellent potential as electrical contact components between weft and warp for woven electronic textile.

This paper discusses the power flow analysis and dc-capacitor voltage regulation for the modular multilevel cascaded converter (MMCC) based on double-star chopper cells (DSCC). This analysis reveals the relationship between the circulating current through the dc link and the mean power flowing out of or into each chopper cell. The dc component on the circulating current supplies a half of the active output power to the upper and lower strings of chopper cells, whereas the fundamental-frequency component transfers an amount of power between the upper and lower strings. Thus, the MMCC-DSCC can balance the capacitor voltages among the cells by controlling the amplitude of the fundamental-frequency component on the circulating current. A new control method based on the power flow analysis is employed, and its effectiveness is verified by circuit simulation.

PWM control is promising to achieve a unity power factor and to improve the input current distortion in a high performance current-source three-phase AC/DC converter system. In contrast to the voltage-source converter, the LC filter connected between the source and the converter may cause an LC resonance both in steady and transient states. Many reports have been published to improve the current distortion in steady state and to suppress the current oscillation in transient state of the current-source PWM converter by using the feedback control.This paper gives an analysis of the transient oscillation of the filter voltage and current, and proposes a simple open-loop suppression method by using the rate limiter of the input current reference. Furthermore, the design rule of the LC filter for the suppression control of the transient oscillation is described. The effectiveness of the proposed approach has been verified by experiments.

This paper proposes a 2.5MHz high-frequency output inverter based on a frequency multiplying technique with a multi-core transformer using Mn-Zn ferrite materials. The upper limit of the operation frequency for these materials is lower than the output frequency of 2.5MHz. First, the operation principle of the proposed circuit is explained. Second, a difficulty of using Mn-Zn for transformers at the frequency of 2.5MHz is discussed. Third, a numerical analysis shows that the proposed circuit can output the frequency over the upper limit of the operation frequency of Mn-Zn ferrite. Finally, through continuous operation, where the proposed circuit outputs approximately 650W, it is experimentally confirmed that Mn-Zn ferrite can be used without large iron loss at the output frequency of 2.5MHz. Thus, the proposed circuit can overcome the difficulty of using Mn-Zn for transformers at the frequency of 2.5MHz.

This paper presents the development of a traction system for high-speed trains by adopting SiC power devices to pursue weight reduction and compactness of the system. We found that the combination of the SiC applied conversion system with a blower-less cooling system and 6-pole induction motors is a suitable approach to highlight the merits of SiC devices. The running tests of a prototype were conducted to confirm its sound performances. The developed traction system is installed in the latest type of Shinkansen train, or the Series N700S, which debuted in March 2018 and will enter commercial service in the summer of 2020. This SiC application to the high-speed train's traction system is the first in the world.

In functional electrical stimulation, the time delay between an input voltage and the corresponding muscle force is a significant issue. This study revealed that the joint angle/voltage relationship can be modeled as a fourth-order system. This enables the inclusion of a time delay in the high-order phase delay of the force/voltage relationship, which may lead to delay recovery using a suitable controller. Accordingly, a full state feedback controller is proposed in this study, to recover the phase delays. Jerk measurement is mandatory for full state feedback controllers owing to the joint the fourth-order joint angle/voltage relationship. This issue can be solved by the recent development of high-resolution encoders. Finally, the validity of the proposed method was verified experimentally.
