This paper presents simulation based design (SBD), which is an indispensable technique, particularly for emerging advanced machine developments. This makes the support of SBD a requirement for Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE) tools.While experience plays a crucial role in conventional CAE, in SBD, the design is created solely via simulations to achieve a highly optimal design with high reliability. SBD primarily relies on large scale optimizations with a vast design space and on solving large scale problems for virtual prototyping. Both require high computation power, however large computations result in better designs. Therefore, an SBD tool is expected to motivate and inspire users to aggressively use the latest computational power, instead of minimizing simulations.Unlike conventional CAE, SBD workflow is not a simple waterfall type, instead, it adopts a multi-perspective iterative process to effectively improve the design. The workflow in practice is primarily dictated by the tool. If the necessary functions are divided into multiple tools, the workflow will also be divided, which negatively affects iterations. The tool is expected to integrate the functions into one environment and encourage users to perform an adequate number of iterations in multi-perspective studies.The implementation of SBD is demonstrated via practical examples, and the expected functionality of an SBD tool is discussed.

In an electrolytic capacitor-less inverter, source current harmonics are caused by LC-circuit resonance, and the source power factor deteriorates. Therefore, an inverter must reduce harmonics control without additional circuits. This paper proposes a source current control method to reduce source current harmonics in a three-phase to three-phase electrolytic capacitor-less inverter of a permanent magnet synchronous motor drive. The proposed method consists of a source current control using the full-state feedbacks of a LC-resonance state observer. The validity of the proposed method is confirmed through experimental results.

In this work, the effect of discharge condition on the NOx reduction performances by a superimposing barrier discharge plasma reactor is experimentally investigated. The superimposing barrier discharge plasma reactor consists of double coaxial cylinders. The outer tube is made of Pyrex glass with aluminum foil electrode which is the outer electrode. The inner tube is a glass one filled with NaCl solution which is the central electrode, and nickel wire electrode wound on the surface of central electrode is the inner electrode. Amplified AC high voltage is applied to the outer electrode and central electrode, and the inner electrode was used as a common ground. A superimposing discharge is generated by surface or silent discharge of 50Hz and changeable frequency. Experimental investigation has been conducted to reduce NO concentration by two kinds of single discharges operating mode and three kinds of superimposed barrier discharge on the changeable frequency.The results show that the reduction rate of NO at superimposed barrier discharge is higher than that of a single discharge at the same applied voltage. At the range of low discharge power, the highest reduction rate is obtained by silent discharge mode. However, the discharge power is more, the highest reduction rate is obtained by surface discharge mode.

Nurse Scheduling Problem (NSP) is the problem that allocating shifts (day and night shifts, holidays, and so on) for nurses under various constraints. Generally, NSP has a lot of constraints. As a result, it needs a lot of knowledge and experience to make the scheduling table with its constraints, and it has been made by the head nurse or the authority in the hospitals. Some researches for NSP using Genetic Algorithm (GA) have been reported. The conventional methods take the constraints into the fitness function. However, if it reduces the fitness value a lot to the parts of solution against the constraints, it causes useless search. Because most of chromosomes are selected in the initial population or as the change by the genetic operations. And if it doesn't reduce the fitness value so much, the final solution has some parts against the constraints. Some of them are established by the Labor Standards Act or the Labor Union Act, so the solution has to be modified. As a result, it is difficult to acquire an effective scheduling table automatically. We study the method of the coding and the genetic operations with their constraints for NSP. In this paper, we propose a new coding method and genetic operations considering the constraints. We apply this method to the NSP using actual shifts and constraints being used in a hospital. It shows that an effective scheduling table satisfying the constraints is acquired by this method.

Railguns are facilities to accelerate projectiles up to several km/s by the electromagnetic force due to a driving current. A variety of current waveforms are used for railguns developed in the world This paper describes the dependence of a railgun operation on a rising rate of the driving current. The use of the exploding wire as an opening switch enables to change the rise time of the driving current. A secondary arc is likely to appear and the erosion on a rail surface is more severe when the current with a short rise time is used. According to the non-dimensional railgun plasma simulation, the current with a short rise time heats up the plasma so fast that plenty of particles ablated from the bore surface, which seem to be the cause of the secondary arc, increase rapidly in the early phase of acceleration.

This paper discusses the suppression of torque ripples in motor drives. Current ripples caused by pulse-width modulation with frequencies of 10-100kHz can be reduced by using high-frequency switching. On the other hand, current ripples caused by dead-times with 6kth-order ripples of fundamental frequencies increase with the switching frequency. Therefore, there is a trade-off relationship between the two ripples. To compensate for dead-times, feedforward compensation is widely used. However, effective compensation cannot be achieved if the feedforward compensation values contain modeling errors. This paper therefore reveals that the robustness of the output torque against compensation errors can be improved by using multilevel inverters. The proposed method is validated through simulations and experimental results.

This paper discusses the suppression of torque ripple using multi-level inverters in motor drives. Because it is possible to improve the output waveforms using multi-level inverters, it is also possible to improve the control performance of motors. In this paper, the multi-level inverters achieve precise motion control, and a theoretical distortion index for multi-level motor drives that takes the control sensitivity into account is proposed. By calculating the distortion index, the optimal equivalent carrier frequency that can minimize torque ripple can be obtained. The validity of the proposed method is confirmed by our experimental results.

Genetic Algorithms (GAs) are powerful and usable algorithms for the nonlinear optimization problem, and some studies of application of GA to the control problem were reported. The search process of GA depends on the fitness value which is assigned to each candidate solution by the fitness function. But as the control objective is more complicated, the design of the proper fitness function becomes more difficult.In this paper, we propose a new search method of GA which reduces the difficulties of the design of the fitness function. In our method, the control objective is divided into some intermediate objectives according to the control strategy, and the search process of GA proceeds with the fitness function for the intermediate objective. The search process is controlled by switching the fitness function based on the average fitness value of the current candidate solutions so that the optimum solution is found. Thus, the search space is structured by using the fitness function and the structure is changed by switching the fitness function based on the quality of the current candidate solutions. In order to confirm the availability of the proposed method, the swing-up control problem of a pendulum is used as an application example and the simulation results are given.

In the field of high precision positioning control, the position servo system must be highly robust against disturbance torque. A Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) has various torque ripple components that degrade control performance. A portion of the torque ripple is caused by the harmonic current. The torque ripple can be suppressed using a highly robust current control system. The remaining torque ripple is defined as the disturbance torque and is compensated for using a Disturbance OBserver (DOB). However, it is very difficult for a DOB to perform the appropriate compensation because it uses a low-pass filter to reduce noise. To obtain highly robust performance, this paper proposes a new position servo system using a disturbance torque hybrid observer and a current control system in the α-β stationary frame. In addition, this paper uses the torque ripple equation instead of a torque ripple table so as to reduce the amount of Digital Signal Processor (DSP) memory. The effectiveness of the proposed position servo system is confirmed using numerical and experimental results.

Usually, analysis of a conventional symmetrical 3-phase feed-back control system can be done using a single-phase conventional transfer function. However, analysis of 3-phase system having rotating coordinate transformations is difficult by the conventional transfer function. Because, the conventional transfer function cannot deal with the control system having the rotating coordinate transformation inserted in the feed-back loop. Therefore, in this paper, the authors propose a novel extended transfer function with the rotating coordinate transformations and analyze the system having a rotating coordinate transformations.

This paper proposes a fast and robust nonlinear deadbeat control for boost DC-DC converters. First, the nonlinear state equation is derived, and second a nonlinear current reference deadbeat control is proposed. Third, a new nonlinear controller to implement the load disturbance compensation is proposed. After the simulations and verification by experiments, it was confirmed that under the conditions of an input voltage of 12V, an output voltage of 20V, a load resistance of 4Ω and a sampling frequency of 100kHz, the voltage command tracking capability of a settling time of 280µs was achieved, and an output voltage recovery time of 1.46ms was achieved for a sudden load change.

In order to improve control performance in various control fields, it is important to model the controlled object accurately. In this case, the quality of the model is considerably influenced by the structure of the model determined by the engineer. An element description method is a method that can optimize not only parameters but also the structure of the model. Therefore, it is possible to search over a wide range without being restricted by human design. However, this considerably increases the search space, and it is easy to fall into a local solution. In this study, the artificial bee colony algorithm is combined with the element description method to improve its search ability. The artificial bee colony algorithm is known to be effective for high-dimensional and multimodal problems. The performance of the proposed method is validated using a heat sealing system in packaging machinery. The proposed method is evaluated in comparison with the genetic algorithm, which is a conventional method. Experiments confirm that the local solution avoidance performance of the artificial bee colony algorithm is significantly better than that of the genetic algorithm.

In this study, the temperature and displacement of printed circuit board (PCB) due to heat of mounted parts were measured by using a thermographic video system and a holographic interferometry measuring system. The relationship between temperature and displacement was studied from the experimental results.As the results, the temperature and displacement on the PCB surface have been influenced with heat of mounted components due to current flow. The distribution of temperature showed some different relationships with the characteristics of the deformation. Therefore, the holographic pattern testing method may be useful in analysis of the detailed thermal stress evaluation of PCB surface and mounted parts.

Recent research in the field of robotics has primarily focused on motion generation methods using imitation learning to adapt to various environments. Human-level speed motion can be imitated by combining imitation learning with bilateral control. In this approach, prediction errors accumulate in the leader because this method requires a leader state that does not exist during autonomous operation. This issue is caused by the low-frequency prediction error of the leader's responses during autonomous operation. Therefore, this paper describes a training model for predicting a leader's state by eliminating low-frequency prediction errors during autonomous operations. The proposed training model predicts the high-frequency state of the leader-follower differential. Because the low-frequency of the leader is not included in the information input and output of the proposed training model, the low frequency prediction error of the leader does not occur during autonomous operation. During our analysis, while writing letters on a paper on a slope, the previous training model failed to write letters when the paper position moved away from the robot. By contrast, only the proposed training model achieved writing at all positions in the experiment.
