An interior permanent magnet (IPM) motor drive system which has regenerating capability augmented by electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) is proposed. In the proposed system, EDLCs are arranged in series with batteries so that a lesser number of the EDLCs and batteries will be required. The proposed system has two bi-directional voltage boosters: one is for both the batteries and EDLCs to control the dc-link voltage of a PWM inverter and the other is for only the EDLCs and is used to control the energy flow from and to the EDLCs.<br>In this paper, a strategy to control the energy flow to and from the EDLCs is explained and its effectiveness is confirmed by simulation and experimental results. Furthermore, the efficiencies of the voltage booster, inverter, PM motor, and whole system are measured for the system with the basic configuration, i.e., which consists of only one bi-directional voltage booster and PWM inverter. Then, the steady-state characteristics are determined. Finally, the efficiency of the voltage boosters in the proposed system is determined, and the advantage of the proposed PM motor drive system is discussed.

In this paper, we studied how to forecast next-day hydropower energy expected output based on the past rainfall record in the reference area. Tank model, which has been conventionally applied for this type of forecast has been improved by employing Kalman Filter stepwise estimation, to accommodate seasonal and yearly variations of rainfall water runoff conditions. Our Kalman Filter Tank Model (KF-Tank Model) yielded a broader choice of parameters while maintaining acceptable level of average forecast errors of about +/-0.05[PU] per forecast period. Further, it is shown that the error correction mechanism of the KF Tank Model can remain robust for snow-falling and snow-melting seasons, without calling for parameter revisions of the model.

Novel algorithm of the dynamic driving/braking force distribution is proposed for electric vehicle (EV) with four in-wheel motors. In such EV, the vehicle lateral motion can be controlled by yaw moment, generated with torque difference between wheels. This method is known as DYC (Direct Yaw moment Control) in normal engine vehicle engineering, however, the torque difference can be generated more directly with in-wheel motors. One problem of DYC is its instability on the slippery road, such as wet or snowy asphalt. To achieve high stability, the loads of wheels are preferable to be equal. The load of each wheel can be evaluated with root sum square of driving/braking force and side force. Therefore, the driving/braking forces, or motor torques, should be distributed depending on the side forces of wheels, to minimize the load imbalance between the wheels. The proposed algorithm can solve this optimization problem approximately with a few calculation cost, thus this method can be applied for real-time calculation within a control period. The approximate solutions with proposed method are evaluated by comparison with numerical solutions that require long calculation time. Difference between these solutions is negligible one, and this indicates the effectiveness of proposed method.

Sending voltage profile of distribution feeder is controlled by changing a tap of distribution transformer. In a distribution network with distributed generators, for reasons of effect of reversed flows from them and existence of a great number of sending voltage profile candidates, it is not easy to control sending voltage profile within the acceptable voltage limit. In this paper, in order to determine the optimal sending voltage profile of distribution transformer in a distribution network with distributed generators, the authors propose a new method to determine the optimal sending voltage profile so as to minimize total number of tap position's change per day under constraints of acceptable voltage limit. In the proposed method, after calculating acceptable range of three phase voltage of distribution feeder, the optimal profile of tap position within the calculated acceptable voltage range is determined among these candidates by using reduced ordered binary decision diagram (ROBDD) which is an efficient enumeration algorithm. In order to check the validity of the proposed method, numerical simulations are carried out for a distribution network model with a distributed generator.

This paper presents the experimental evaluation of auditory cognition's effects on visual cognition of video. The influences of seven auditory stimuli on visual recognition are investigated based on experimental data of key-down operations. The key-down operations for locating a moving target by visual and auditory images are monitored by an experiment system originally made by devices including VTR, CRT, Data Recorder, etc.. Regression analysis and EM algorithm are applied to analyzing the experiment data of 350 key-down operations, made with 50 people and 7 auditory stimulus types. The following characteristic results about the influence of auditory stimulus on visual recognition are derived. Firstly, seven people responded too early for every experiment. The average of and the standard deviation of their response times are 439[ms] and 231[ms] respectively. Secondly, the other forty three people responded about 10[ms] after at cases, in which auditory images were presented 30[ms] or 60[ms] before visual images. Also they responded about 10[ms] early at the other cases. Thirdly, as the visual image was dominant information used for the key-down decision making, apparent effects of auditory images on the key-down operation were not measured. Averages and standard deviations of distributions measured by EM algorithm, regarding to 7 auditory stimulus types, are considered and verified with the Card's MHP model of human response.

Fe oxide-coated TiO<sub>2</sub> particles for UV protection cosmetics were produced by means of atmospheric pressure glow discharge using IAA(Iron acethyl acetonato). The particles were also coated by a silica protection layer. To examine the UV catalytic ability of Fe oxide -coated TiO<sub>2</sub>, we measured a squalene that contained the powders by GCMS for the gas products after the squalene had been irradiated by a Xe lamp for one hour. Using silica-coated TiO<sub>2</sub> that was coated by Fe oxide, we find almost no signals from any harmful organic oxides in the GC-MS spectra of the UV irradiated squalene. The multi- coated powder shows very fine and flesh like-color with pearl-like glowing.

Local power systems (66kV) are served from the 275kV or 154kV substations. In order to maintain power supply reliability, the transmission lines are connected to several substations, and the operational configuration is radial. Since practical local power system has a number of transmission lines, many configuration candidates occur. It is expected to effectively evaluate these configuration candidates from various viewpoints such as reliability of power supply, transmission loss and so on. In this paper, the authors propose a multi objective evaluation method by using deterministic and probabilistic approaches for local power system configuration. In the proposed multi objective evaluation method, after selecting system configuration candidates which satisfy N-1 security by using an optimization method based on Boolean function, these candidates are evaluated from viewpoints of expected outage time, transmission loss and facility operation rate. In order to check the validity of the proposed method, numerical results are shown for a practical local system model with about 39 × 10<SUP>27</SUP> configuration

This paper deals with spatio-temporal indexing method for moving objects. In our research, we propose XAT (eXtended Adaptive Tree) structure, consisting of spatial trees and temporal trees, for fast search for spatio-temporal data. The searching process in XAT structure is divided into two steps. The first step roughly narrows down the potential solutions (moving objects) according to the given searching range. The last step fixes the real solution by checking the object's moving track. We compare XAT structure and 3D structure, one of the conventional methods, by computer simulation. The result shows that XAT structure works faster than 3D structure when there is difference between the spatial search range and temporal search range and the objects' moving areas are small.

In this paper, we present an object category recognition method for an information search system which is queried by camera of mobile phone or by servers of internet services. In such a system, processing speed is an important requirement.<br>To improve processing speed, the hierarchical object category recognition technique proposed by Serre<sup>(23)</sup> is modified using Haar-Like features, vector quantization of feature models, and reduction of processing area. In addition, by retaining the information of each feature's position, it compensates the accuracy which is a little reduced in exchange of processing speed. We implemented this method to web server, and proved this system can work in practical processing time. Through the experiment for Caltech-101 image database and natural scene category images, we also confirm the accuracy of our approach.

This paper describes improvement for wheel slip and re-adhesion control for electric locomotives with induction motor vector control. Compared with the conventional slip frequency method, the torque response is much improved by the vector control. By referring the re-adhesion process for the traditional rectifier controlled do-motor locomotives, suitable torque reduction to an induction motor is applied in accordance with the wheel slip speed. The test results by the series EH500 locomotive for Japan Freight Railway Company, show much improvement for the re-adhesion process especially when a steeper torque reduction ratio is applied.

Parallel robots with closed-loop kinematic chains have been used in industrial applications. They exhibit superior precision, stiffness, and operating speed than serial robots owing to their mechanical architecture. However, parallel robots demonstrate static singularity unique to parallel mechanisms, which further impede their application. Static singularity is caused by passive joints included in the mechanism. In this study, a 3-leg 6-DOF spatial parallel robot with actuation redundancy and its statics are analyzed. The analysis indicates that static singularity does not occur if actuation redundancy is properly introduced. This analysis is based on the decomposition of force transmission in the robot. Experimental results show that precise trajectory tracking and stable contact are achieved by virtue of the actuation redundancy. This study opens new avenues for the application of parallel robots.

The power capacitor and the AC filter are used for the reliable supply of electric power. For the protection of the power capacitor system, the over-load relay must be very accurate, because the operating voltage in power system is nearly the limited level of the power capacitor. For the protection of the AC filter system, the effective value must be detected from the filtercurrent which is mixed of fundamental and harmonics. So, we developed and produced the relay systems using new algorithms, high rate sampling, digital filter, R.M. S. calculation. On this paper, we report the characteristic of the protections and the algorithms.

This paper describes a vector control system of an induction machine using a neutral-pointclamped voltage source inverter (NPC-VSI) that is one of double series connected inverters.The NPC-VSI is able to output 5 levels step-shaped line to line voltage without output transformers or reactors, and it may reduce harmonic currents corresponding to torque ripples. However, the NPC-VSI has a problem that excessive high voltage is applied to swiching devices when a neutral point of two DC capacitors of the NPC-VSI varies from the center of the DC link voltage, because the neutral point is floating.This paper proposes a current controller to which the space vector theory is applied. This can reduce harmonic currents to 1/4 of those of a conventional voltage source inverter using 6 swiching devices, and regulate the neutral point potential within a preset range. To simplify the current controller, information about voltage space vectors is given from the vector controller to the current controller. Validity of the current controller is confirmed by a prototype using an induction machine of 2.2 kW.
