An ovigerous female of a fish ectoparasite Argulus caecus C. B. Wilson, 1922 was collected from a squid, probably Todarodes pacificus (Steenstrup, 1880), from a fixed net installed in Otsuchi Bay, an inlet of the northwestern Pacific Ocean, Iwate Prefecture, northen Japan. Since the original description of A. caecus was insufficient, this paper reports on the morphology of the species based on a detailed examination of the female. In particular, the first and second antennae, the first and second maxillae, and four pairs of legs, whose features were poorly known, are reported in detail. The specimen of A. caecus is inferred to have detached itself and moved from a fish host, perhaps a coastal puffer, to the squid while these two animals were trapped in the net or when they were removed from the net. Following Argulus scutiformis Thiele, 1900, A. caecus is the second species of Argulus found from northern Japan located in the northern temperate or subarctic region, and its occurrence in this region is likely to be affected by the Tsushima Warm Current and its branch, the Tsugaru Warm Current, both of which flow off the coast of the region.

Three infaunal apodid sea cucumbers collected in Kushimoto, Shirahama, and Susami, in the southern coast of Wakayama, Japan are described. They have different morphological characteristics in body color, ossicle arrangement, and internal organs, each other. First species, animal displays a large body size (approximately 70–150 mm) and pale body color (semi-transparent pink with anterior tip brownish) was found out. Second species, animal displays a small body size (approximately 20 mm) and pale body color (transparent yellow) with whitish wheel-papillae on three dorsal interradii was found out. Third species, animal displays a moderate body size (approximately 20–35 mm) and deep red or reddish brown body color with dark yellowish wheel-papillae on three dorsal interradii was found out. All three species having 10 tentacles, sigmoid-hook ossicles, and wheel ossicles in their body wall, turned out to be belonging to the genus Taeniogyrus Semper, 1867, and new to science.

Increasing numbers of drug-facilitated sexual assaults (DFSAs) have been reported recently and have become a social concern. In DFSAs, biological specimens (urine, blood, and hair) are analyzed to prove the victim's drug exposure, which can lead to proof of the sexual crime. Hair is the only specimen that can provide firm evidence of drug ingestion in cases of long delays (more than a week) in reporting the crime. Furthermore, detailed sectional hair analysis of a single hair strand enables to estimate the victim's drug-use history (date and amount of intake). Several recent studies have demonstrated high-sensitivity methods using mass spectrometry to detect sub-pg/mg concentrations of hypnotics in hair, and additionally illustrated the incorporation pathways of drugs and detailed distribution patterns in the hair after intake. Based on these findings, hair testing for hypnotics has been put to practical applications since 2016. In this paper, we review the practical concepts and usefulness of hair testing for hypnotics while introducing the current situation of DFSAs.

中世社会における呪術の問題を考える際、その議論には二つの方向性がある。第一は中世を呪術からの解放という視点で捉える見方であり、第二は中世社会が呪術を構造的に不可欠としたという考えである。前者の視角は、赤松俊秀・石井進氏らによって提起された。しかし、中世社会では呪詛が実体的暴力として機能しており、天皇や将軍の護持僧は莫大な財と膨大な労力をかけて呪詛防御の祈祷を行っていた。その点からすれば、中世では呪詛への恐怖が薄れたとする両氏の考えは成り立たたない。とはいえ、合理的精神が着実に発展している以上、顕密仏教と合理性との関係をどう捉えるかが問題の焦点となる。そこで本稿では『東山往来(とうさんおうらい)』という書物をとりあげ、①そこでの合理性や批判精神が内外の文献を博捜した上で答えを見出そうとする挙証主義によって担保されていたこと、②その挙証主義は顕密仏教における論義や文献学研究を母胎として育まれたことを明らかにした。さらに密教祈祷においても、①僧侶が医療技術を援用しながら治病祈祷を行っていたこと、②一宮で行われた豊作祈願の予祝儀礼も、農業技術の達成を踏まえたものであったことを指摘した。そして、高い合理性を取り込んだ呪術、呪術性を融着させた高度な合理主義が顕密仏教の特質であると論じた。そして、顕密仏教が中世の呪術体系の頂点に君臨できた要因として、①文献的裏づけの豊かさと質の高さ、②祈祷を行う僧侶の日常的な鍛錬、③呪詛を正当化する高度な理論の3点をあげた。最後に、合理性と呪術性の共存、呪術的合理性と合理的呪術性との混在は、顕密仏教だけの特質ではなく、程度の差こそあれ、現代社会をも貫く超歴史的なものと捉えるべきだと結論している。

Tokyo Metropolitan Area is the most populous metropolitan area in the world. While cities around the world are struggling to cope with COVID-19, the number of new positives and deaths in Tokyo has so far been relatively contained compared to other large metropolitan areas. In Japan, infection control measures do not prohibit people from moving around during a COVID-19 outbreak. However, people are not only refraining from travel and social activities at the request of the government, but are also using their own judgment to avoid risk based on information about the infectious disease. This plays an extremely important role in Japan’s infection control measures. Expectations are high in Japan for maintaining the health care system and minimizing deaths. It is necessary to steadily respond to these expectations while normalizing social functions.

Freshwater jellyfish comprising the genus Craspedacusta are thought to have originated in the Yangtze River, China and have since spread to all continents except Antarctica. In this study, jellyfish were collected from Haruta-ike, an artificial pond in Chikuma City, Nagano (Japan). Medusae were identified as Craspedacusta sowerbii using morphological and molecular techniques. Despite the existence of Haruta-ike since prior to the Edo era (ca. 1603), this work represents the first published record of freshwater jellyfish in this pond. Herein, we report on the novel swimming behavior documented in this population, which includes both male and female C. sowerbii medusae. Additionally, we discuss the life cycle of polyps reared in culture from Machikane-ike, a pond in Osaka for which we have published the first complete mitochondrial genome of C. sowerbii from Japan. Finally, we report on the morphology and life cycle of the rare Japanese freshwater jellyfish Astrohydra japonica in Lake Biwa (Shiga), documented only a few times in the 40 years since its original discovery in Japan. The results of our robust phylogenetic analysis using the 16S rRNA gene and COI markers of C. sowerbii and A. japonica in this study and for C. sowerbii material from Singapore, together with all publicly available sequences for these markers for the two species worldwide, revealed two major C. sowerbii clades suggesting the Nagano and Osaka populations originated from two distinct introduction events. This collaborative research was made possible through international collaborations among multiple research facilities, museums and one wildlife reserve.
