This paper presents Non-Axiomatic Term Logic (NATL) as a theoretical computational framework of humanlike symbolic reasoning in artificial intelligence. NATL unites a discrete syntactic system inspired from Aristotle’s term logic and a continuous semantic system based on the modern idea of distributed representations, or embeddings. This paper positions the proposed approach in the phylogeny and the literature of logic, and explains the framework. As it is yet no more than a theory and it requires much further elaboration to implement it, no quantitative evaluation is presented. Instead, qualitative analyses of arguments using NATL, some applications to possible cognitive science/robotics-related research, and remaining issues towards a machinery implementation are discussed.

The kelp crab Pugettia quadridens was recorded from Hakodate Bay, Hokkaido, Japan, representing the first record of Hokkaido and the northern extension of its range after the redescription of P. quadridens by Ohtsuchi & Kawamura (2019). Considering the collected specimen was a mature male and P. ferox, a closely related species to P. quadridens, is the common species in the sampling site, occurrence of reproductive behavior between the two species was examined by observing the mating behavior in an aquarium. The male of P. quadridens did not attempt to mate with either of three females of P. ferox, implying a behavioral reproductive isolation between the two species.

Age-specific and age-standardized rates (ASR) of registered cancers for nine communities in the U.S.A. (21.8 million inhabitants, mainly white) were obtained from IARC data (1978-82, 1983-87, 1988-92). The percentage of people supplied with "optimally" fluoridated drinking water (FD) obtained from the Fluoridation Census 1985, U.S.A. were used for regression analysis of incidence rates of cancers at thirty six sites (ICD-WHO, 1957). About two-thirds of sites of the body (ICD) were associated positively with FD, but negative associations were noted for lip cancer, melanoma of the skin, and cancers of the prostate and thyroid gland. In digestive organs the stomach showed only limited and small intestine no significant link. However, cancers of the oral cavity and pharynx, colon and rectum, hepato-biliary and urinary organs were positively associated with FD. This was also the case for bone cancers in male, in line with results of rat experiments. Brain tumors and T-cell system Hodgkin's disease, Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, multiple myeloma, melanoma of the skin and monocytic leukaemia were also correlated with FD. Of the 36 sites, 23 were positively significant (63.9%), 9 not significant (25.0%) and 4 negatively significant (11.1%). This may indicate a complexity of mechanisms of action of fluoride in the body, especially in view of the coexising positive and negative correlations with the fluoridation index. The likelihood of fluoride acting as a genetic cause of cancer requires consideration.

眼は、脳や生殖器官と同様に、臓器機能を温存するために炎症が自動制御される性質すわなち免疫特権(immune privilege)が備わっている特殊な臓器である。角膜移植モデルを用いて、眼の免疫特権の分子機構を解析し、臨床における治療に応用することが可能である。角膜組織の同所性または異所性移植モデルを用いて、角膜を構成する各細胞層が各々異なる免疫特性を有することを示した。免疫原性は角膜上皮細胞と実質細胞に由来するが、免疫特権は角膜内皮細胞に由来する。角膜内皮細胞に恒常発現するCD95LとB7-H1が角膜内に浸潤する炎症細胞にアポトーシスを誘導して眼局所における免疫抑制を担っている。臨床への応用として、ドナー角膜上皮を宿主由来上皮に置換して移植することにより、拒絶のハイリスク宿主においても抗原感作と拒絶を回避でき、移植片の長期生着を得ることが可能である。

最近日本祖語、琉球祖語と日琉祖語の再構が非常に進んだとは言え、まだ不明な箇所が少なからず残っている。特に、日本語にない琉球語の特別な語彙と文法要素、また、琉球語にない日本語の特別な語彙と文法要素が目立つ。それ以外にも、同源の様でも、実際に説明に問題がある語彙と文法要素も少なくない。この論文では、そうしたいくつかの語彙を取り上げる。結論として次の二つの点を強調したい。先ず、琉球諸言語の資料を使わなければ、日琉祖語の再構は不可能である。第二に、上代日本語と現代日本語の本土方言には存在しない韓国語の要素が琉球諸言語に現れていることを示そうとした。私の説明が正しければ、ある上代韓国語の方言と琉球祖語の間に接点があったことを明示する事になるであろう。

As I showed in my previous three papers, though the Novellino had been an excellent forerunner of the Italian novellas, only with the appearance of the Decameron was the basis for the Italian novella truly founded. Almost all the elements of the novella can be considered as heritages of the Decameron but, referring to the definitions of the novella form, I selected firstly the adoption of the `cornice' or framework device, secondly the setting within the realm of the believable, and thirdly the audacious expression of Eros and of sexual relations. In this paper I focus on the Pecorone of Ser Giovanni Fiorentino, the Trecentonovelle of Franco Sacchetti, and the Novelliere of Giovanni Sercambi, all of which were included by Di Francia in his Novellistica as epigones of Boccaccio. I find that these three works imitated Boccaccio's cornice device to various extents. I also find a remarkable increase of settings within the realm of the believable by the three authors compared to works published before the Decameron, and a similar increase in the percentage of novellas in which sexual relations take place. From the high number of incidences in the Novelliere, in particular (49.68%), we can imagine how the people of Tuscany, where the tradition of Dante and Petrarch had forbidden them to see women in sexual terms, must have welcomed the appearance of the Decameron as the liberator of Eros.

本稿では,聴覚障がい者のために開発された数多くの遠隔情報保障システムのうち,筑波技術大学で開発されたものを中心にその仕組みについて概説し,それらの応用場面の実例について解説する.遠隔手話通訳システムでは,聴覚障がいのあるユーザの視線移動や手話通訳者の通訳時の負担を考慮した,手話通訳者の映像に書き込みした提示資料やキーワードを合成する表示画面が特徴的である.遠隔文字通訳では聴覚障がいのあるユーザや文字入力者にとっての利便性を考慮したシステムを開発しており,さまざまな分野で活用されている状況について詳述する.
