We introduce a new conserved quantity, Normalized Energy Density (NED), alternative to the conventional definition of energy for a layered structure in a 2D SH problem. NED is defined by the average of power of a half transfer function multiplied by the impedance, and the conservation across the material interface is analytically proved for a two-layered case. For three, four, and ten-layered cases, the conservation is examined by applying the Monte Carlo simulation method, and then NED is supposed to be conserved through the layers.

Dohan 道範(1178?-1252) was a monk of the Shingon school 真言宗 on Mt. Kōya 高野山 in the early Kamakura 鎌倉 period. The aim of this paper is to investigate his ideas on the Pure Land 浄土 in the Himitsu-nenbutsu-shō 秘密念仏抄, one of his representative works on Amida Buddha 阿弥陀仏 and the Pure Land from the viewpoint of Esoteric Buddhism. In this work, Dōhan quotes some passages from the works of Nakanogawa Jippan 中川実範(?-1144) and Kakuban 覚鑁(1095-1143) as pioneers of the esoteric interpretation of the Pure Land. He presents a new system of ideas on the basis of their works. I examine them from three points of view, that is, his ideas on Amida Buddha, the Pure Land, and myōgō 名号 or the Buddha's name, and consider how Dohan accepted earlier ideas and what the characteristics of his ideas were. According to Dōhan, conventional ideas about the Pure Land and Amida are at an immature stage of understanding, and at a deeper level Amida is thought to be the same as Dainichi Nyorai 大日如来, the main Buddha of Esoteric Buddhism. He also states that the land of Gokuraku 極楽浄土 is not actually in the west but in the minds of all creatures, and that raigō 来迎, or Amida's coming to meet a dying person, does not mean that Amida actually comes to take him to the real Pure Land, but that with some training he sees the Buddha in his mind. With regard to myōgō, he developed Kakuban's idea that every word is a mantra 真言, and asserts that chanting Amida's name and chanting mantras have quite the same meaning. In addition, Dohan asserts that various virtues are included in the three letters of A-mi-da. And in conclusion, he even says that the entire world of a maņdala is included in the name of Amida. One might venture to say that the interpretation of the name of Amida in the Shingon school attained its ultimate stage in his system. In this way, Dōhan radically reinterpreted the concepts of Amida, the Pure Land, myōgō, and so on from his position based on the doctrines of Esoteric Buddhism. He considered that the ideas of the Pure Land and Amida Buddha were part of Shingon doctrine and insists on the superiority of Esoteric Buddhism by subsuming these ideas under the system of Esoteric Buddhism. Thus, his ideas were different from a "fusion" of Esoteric Buddhism and Pure Land Buddhism, which was a characteristic of the interpretation of the Pure Land in the Shingon school before him.

Recent hypotheses regarding the origin and body plan evolution of brachiopods are reviewed. Brachiopods are firmly placed within the lophotrochozoa, one of three major bilaterian lineages revealed by molecular phylogeny. Comparisons of mitochondrial gene arrangements further suggest that brachiopods are closer to annelids than to molluscs, a scheme supported by morphological comparisons of Cambrian fossils, including those of halkieriids and wiwaxiids. Any scenario explaining the brachiopod origin may involve curling of the dorso-ventral axis along the anterior-posterior axis. This hypothesis could partly be tested by methods of molecular developmental biology. Some potential pitfalls of this approach are discussed with reference to the deuterostome-like features of brachiopods and to the ubiquity of co-option of developmentally important genes.

Objectives The aim of this study was to compare the risk for cancers of A-bomb survivors in the ongoing life span study (LSS) with unexposed groups consisting of the entire populations of Hiroshima prefecture and neighboring Okayama prefecture. Methods The subjects consisted of the Hiroshima group reported in LSS report 12 (LSS-H group) and a control group (the entire populations of Hiroshima and Okayama-HPCG and OPCG, respectively). We estimated the expected number of deaths due to all causes and to cancers of various causes among the exposed survivors of the Hiroshima bombing in the LSS report 12 who died in the follow-up interval at ages similar to those of people in Hiroshima and Okayama prefectures who were aged 0-34 years at the time of the bombing in 1945. We compared the standardized mortality ratio (SMR) of the LSS-H group to that of the HPCG and OPCG (SMR-H and SMRO, respectively). Results Even at low and very low dose categories, the SMR-H and SMR-O were significantly high for all deaths, all cancers, solid cancers, and liver cancers in male subjects, and for uterus and liver cancers in female subjects, respectively. The results show that, if the dose estimations of the dosimetry system 1986 (DS86) are correct, there are significantly increased risks of cancer among even survivors exposed to the very low dose level. Conclusions The dose assumptions of DS86 have been criticized for underestimating doses in areas distant from the hypocenter. The contribution of residual radiation, ignored in LSS, and that of neutrons, underestimated by DS86, is suggested to be fairly high.

小論は、2002年度目本語教育学会春季大会シンポジウムに端を発する安田敏朗と松岡弘の「論争」を批判的に検討したものである。松岡は、安田が日本語教育史研究の「これから」に対して行った批判に反批判を加え、コメニウスと山口喜一郎の言語教育観・教授法の類似性を根拠に言語教育の普遍性を主張し、日本語教育を論難する安田に反論する。しかし、筆者は、この反論に於ける松岡による安田の見解の不当な矮小化、歴史的文脈を無視したコメニウスと山口の対比の不的確性、松岡のテキスト解釈の狭さを指摘し、さらに、こうした松岡の解釈が安田や、同様に日本語教育を批判する駒込武に対する"報復感情"に起因することを批判した。また、松岡や関正昭の駒込・安田批判が、日本語教育の部外者に向けられながら内部者には為されない不徹底さを指摘し、その閉鎖的な体質を批判するとともに、歴史研究者からも学ぶこと及び日本語教育に無理解な言説に対する批判の必要性を提唱した。
