Of the different translations of the Chang’a Han shiji-jing 長阿含世記経 "The Longer Āgama Sūtra" – the Daloutan-jing 大楼炭経, the Qishi-jing 起世経 and the Qishi yinben-jing 起世因本経, which explain the Buddhist world view – the Qishi-jing and the Qishi yinben-jing were translated during the same dynasty. Despite the remarkable similarities between the two translations, as of yet, they have never been subjected to comparative research. This essay addresses the question as to why two translations were made during the same dynasty and turns to sutra catalogues and the biographies of different monks as primary sources. The first translation was undertaken primarily by Juanaguputa 闍那崛多; however, after losing his standing, he was released from his responsibilities. The next figure to undertake the business of sutra translation in the Sui Dynasty was Dharmagupta 達摩笈多, who undertook a new translation of theQishi yinben-jing. This accounts for the presence of two simultaneous translations ofthe same sutra.

Nichosai was a painter of giga (humorous pictures) probably born before 1751 (Horeki 1), active during the Annei (1772–81) and the Kyowa (1801–04)periods, and thought to have died in either 1802 (Kyowa 2) or 1803 (Kyowa 3). His artistry had matured by the Kansei period (1789–1801). The hanpon (woodblock-printed illustrated books) Nichosai was involved with have been the subject of previous research by Hida Kozo, yet his research was comparatively brief. In this paper, the author discusses the illustrations Nichosai made for these books, a topic that has as yet received little attention from scholars, focusing on the unique characteristics of his style. Nichosai published four works of hanpon while he was alive, and two more were published immediately after his death. In addition, he drew occasional illustrations for various other books, and with Hida's introduction to work as a guide, this paper will touch briefly on the development of Nichosai's book illustrations. This will help elucidate the development of Nichosai's style as a book illustrator, and deepen our understanding of its relationship to his giga.

This paper takes a Jusha in Hakuen Shoin. Tada Kaian was one of the leading students in Hakuen Shoin. He was active as a practical person in many spheres at the end of Edo period. This paper analyzes what characteristics he had in those days and his proposals-especially the coastal defense. He made his suggestions actively to Edo Shogunate, the Imperial court and Izushi clan. He tried to promote the industries in the border area from the motives of defense against the powerful Western nations. He was clearly different from previous ordinary Jusha and loyalists to the Emperor. His proposals shows he was not only scholar but also an engineer.

This study aims to consider the process of the negotiation among various relations over a religion or religious practices through a case of Islam in southern part of Vietnam. About 67,000 muslims in Vietnam are composed of various ethnicities such as the Cham and the immigrants from India etc. This study examine how negotiations have been performed over Islamness and ethnic elements through the case of the Cham Muslim who are the majority group of people among Muslims in Vietnam. In this case, I will focus on three kinds of relations; relation among the Cham, relation between the Cham Muslim and the other Muslim, and relation between Nation state and religious group or ethnic group. The first focus is applied to the religious practice of Cham Bani, who is one type of “Muslim” in Vietnam. Then, I will examine a Islamic movement among Cham Bani occurred from 1960’s — when the Cham based Islam organization established in Saigon (present Ho Chi Minh City) — until now. And then, I will examine how the Cham or Muslim have been located under the state policy on religion. Finally, how “Islamness” in Vietnam today formed through those relations and negotiations will be discussed.
