The cause of burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is unknown. Although no effective treatment has been established, BMS patients frequently chew gum to alleviate pain. To identify the cause and new treatments for BMS, this study investigated the psychophysical and pharmacological properties of gum chewing to better understand its pain-relieving effects. In this prospective, blinded study, plasma catecholamine and serotonin levels and Profile of Mood States (POMS) scores were assessed after gum chewing or simulated chewing in 40 women (20 BMS patients and 20 age-matched controls). Visual analogue scale (VAS) scores for pain decreased significantly in BMS patients after gum chewing and simulated chewing. Moreover, resting VAS scores of BMS patients were significantly positively correlated with plasma adrenaline level. Furthermore, gum chewing was significantly correlated with lower plasma adrenaline level, VAS score, and tension-anxiety score. These results suggest that adrenaline is important in the pathogenesis of BMS pain and that the analgesic effect of gum chewing is induced through the potential effects of anxiety reduction, although this effect might not be specific to BMS. In addition, the analgesic effect of gum chewing was not induced solely by chewing motion.

Heterocyclic changes in the chemical structure of existing herbicides may provide new options for weed management. Pyridine and pyrimidine analogues of dichlobenil were evaluated for weed control in ornamental production. All compounds were preemergently applied at 1, 5, and 10 kg/ha to large crabgrass (<i>Digitaria sanguinalis</i>), common purslane (<i>Portulaca oleracea</i>), and Japanese holly (<i>Ilex crenata</i>). The pyrimidine analogue, 4,6-dichloropyrimidine-5-carbonitrile, controlled large crabgrass and common purslane similar to the active ingredient in dichlobenil at 10 kg/ha.

BackgroundCRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing technology has facilitated the generation of knockout mice, providing an alternative to cumbersome and time-consuming traditional embryonic stem cell-based methods. An earlier study reported up to 16% efficiency in generating conditional knockout (cKO or floxed) alleles by microinjection of 2 single guide RNAs (sgRNA) and 2 single-stranded oligonucleotides as donors (referred herein as "two-donor floxing" method).ResultsWe re-evaluate the two-donor method from a consortium of 20 laboratories across the world. The dataset constitutes 56 genetic loci, 17,887 zygotes, and 1718 live-born mice, of which only 15 (0.87%) mice contain cKO alleles. We subject the dataset to statistical analyses and a machine learning algorithm, which reveals that none of the factors analyzed was predictive for the success of this method. We test some of the newer methods that use one-donor DNA on 18 loci for which the two-donor approach failed to produce cKO alleles. We find that the one-donor methods are 10- to 20-fold more efficient than the two-donor approach.ConclusionWe propose that the two-donor method lacks efficiency because it relies on two simultaneous recombination events in cis, an outcome that is dwarfed by pervasive accompanying undesired editing events. The methods that use one-donor DNA are fairly efficient as they rely on only one recombination event, and the probability of correct insertion of the donor cassette without unanticipated mutational events is much higher. Therefore, one-donor methods offer higher efficiencies for the routine generation of cKO animal models.

The relationship between jet production in the central region and the underlying-event activity in a pseudorapidity-separated region is studied in 4.0 pb-1 of s=2.76 TeV pp collision data recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The underlying event is characterised through measurements of the average value of the sum of the transverse energy at large pseudorapidity downstream of one of the protons, which are reported here as a function of hard-scattering kinematic variables. The hard scattering is characterised by the average transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of the two highest transverse momentum jets in the event. The dijet kinematics are used to estimate, on an event-by-event basis, the scaled longitudinal momenta of the hard-scattered partons in the target and projectile beam-protons moving toward and away from the region measuring transverse energy, respectively. Transverse energy production at large pseudorapidity is observed to decrease with a linear dependence on the longitudinal momentum fraction in the target proton and to depend only weakly on that in the projectile proton. The results are compared to the predictions of various Monte Carlo event generators, which qualitatively reproduce the trends observed in data but generally underpredict the overall level of transverse energy at forward pseudorapidity.

Background:The effect of remote monitoring (RM) in atrial arrhythmia detection, stroke reduction, and anticoagulation therapy remains unknown, particularly for patients with implantable or wearable cardiac devices. Methods and Results:We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the role of RM in atrial arrhythmia detection, stroke reduction and anticoagulation therapeutic intervention. Online databases were queried to include randomized controlled trials comparing detection of atrial arrhythmia and stroke risk between patients undergoing RM and those receiving in-office (IO) follow-up. Outcomes and complications of RM-guided anticoagulation therapy and conventional therapy in patients with atrial fibrillation were also reviewed. A total of 16 studies were included. Compared with patients receiving IO follow-up, patients undergoing RM had a significantly higher detection rate of atrial arrhythmia (risk ratio [RR], 1.363; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.147–1.619), and a lower risk of stroke (RR, 0.539; 95% CI, 0.301–0.936). The higher rate of atrial arrhythmia was only noted in patients with wearable devices (RR, 4.070; 95% CI, 2.408–6.877), and the lower risk of stroke was only noted in patients with cardiovascular implantable electronic devices (CIED) (RR, 0.513; 95% CI, 0.265–0.996).Conclusions:RM is effective for atrial arrhythmia detection in patients using wearable devices and for reducing the risk of stroke in patients with CIED.

Phylogenetic relationships among the East Asian species of the genus Crocidura (Mammalia, Insectivora, Soricidae) were inferred from the partial sequences (402 base pairs) of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene. Six species of Crocidura and one representative of another insectivoran genus Suncus were examined. In the neighbor joining tree, four distinct lineages were recognized: C. lasiura from northeastern China and Korea, and C. dsinezumi from the main-islands of Japan; C. attenuata from Taiwan; C. watasei from the Amami and Okinawa Groups, and S. murinus from the Miyako Group; and C. suaveolens from Tsushima and Taiwan, and C. sibirica from Central Asia in Russian territory. All these lineages excluding C. lasiura and C. dsinezumi were also recognized by the maximum parsimony analysis. Clustering of C. watasei with S. murinus suggested the non-monophyly of the genus Crocidura as of the present definition. Biogeographical implications of the present results were also discussed.

We sequenced the cytochrome b gene from two little-studied mammal species from the highlands of Southwest China, the long-tailed mole Scaptonyx fusicaudus and the gracile shrew-like mole Uropsilus gracilis. This data was used to examine the phylogenetic relationships among 19 talpid species within the family Talpidae (Mammalia: Eulipotyphla). Cytochrome b gene trees supported a basal placement of shrew-like moles (Uropsilus) within the Talpidae, and suggested that fossorial specializations arose twice during talpid evolution. To assess the evolutionary relationships of moles endemic to this region, we additionally sequenced the 12S rRNA gene and the nuclear recombination-activating gene-1 from eight and ten East Asian taxa, respectively. Analyses of these single and concatenated data sets suggested that East Asian shrew moles diverged prior to the evolution of fossorial Eurasian moles. However, we were unable to determine whether semi-fossorial shrew moles are monophyletic. In contrast, fossorial Eurasian genera (Talpa, Mogera and Euroscaptor) were consistently found to form a monophyletic clade, with Mogera and Euroscaptor representing sister taxa. Furthermore, this fossorial clade grouped with the semi-aquatic Desmana, although with fairly low (35-62%) bootstrap support. Mogera imaizumii was found to be more closely related to M. wogura than to M. tokudae. This implies that the ancestors of these three species entered Japan from the Asian continent in this order via a series of migration events, suggesting that the Japanese Islands have played an important role in preserving mole lineages from ancient to recent times.

Taxonomic analysis has previously revealed that the species of moles that inhabit Japan are characterized by exceptional species richness and a high level of endemism. Here, we focused on the evolutionary history of the four Japanese mole species of the genera <i>Euroscapter</i> and <i>Mogera</i>, examining mitochondrial cytochrome <i>b</i> (cyt <i>b</i>) gene sequences and comparing them with those of continental <i>Mogera wogura</i> (Korean and Russian populations), <i>M. insularis</i> from Taiwan, and <i>Talpa europaea</i> and <i>T. altaica</i> from the western and central Eurasian continent, respectively. Our data support the idea that in a radiation center somewhere on the Eurasian continent, a parental stock evolved to modern mole-like morph and radiated several times intermittently during the course of the evolution, spreading its branches to other peripheral geographic domains at each stage of the radiation. Under this hypothesis, the four lineages of Japanese mole species, <i>E. mizura</i>, <i>M. tokudae</i>, <i>M. imaizumii</i>, and <i>M. wogura</i>, could be explained to have immigrated to Japan in this order. <i>Mogera wogura</i> and <i>M. imaizumii</i> showed substantial amounts of geographic variation and somewhat complicated distributions of the cyt <i>b</i> gene types. These intraspecific variations are likely to be associated with the expansion processes of moles in the Japanese Islands during the Pleistocene glacial ages.<br>

We report the first karyological description of a southeast Asian mole, the Malaysian mole (<i>Euroscaptor micrura malayana</i>). The karyotype of the Malaysian mole includes 36 chromosomes, which consist of 18 biarmed and 16 acrocentric autosomes and the sex pair. The sex chromosomes are a small meta-submetacentric X chromosome and a minute dot-like Y chromosome, although the latter is somewhat larger than that of some talpid allies. Autosomal complements include one pair of NOR-bearing chromosomes. A comparative G-banding analysis with the Japanese congener <i>E. mizura</i> showed that these two species share high G-banding homology, and their differences on two pairs of chromosomes are explained by a single reciprocal translocation. The karyological similarity of these distant geographic species is discussed in a systematic and evolutionary context, based on comparisons to other species distributed between them.<br>

The cryptographic algorithm called INCrypt32 is a MAC algorithm to authenticate participants, RFID cards and readers, in HID Global's iCLASS systems. HID's iCLASS cards are widely used contactless smart cards for physical access control. Although INCrypt32 is a heart of the security of HID's iCLASS systems, its security has not been evaluated yet since the specification has not been open to public. In this paper, we reveal the specification of INCrypt32 by reverse-engineering iCLASS cards and investigate the security of INCrypt32 with respect to the cryptographic sense. This result is the first work to describe the details of INCrypt32 and the possibility of a secret key (64-bit) recovery in our attack environments. 242 MAC queries are required in the real environment using secure communication protocols. But the required number of MAC queries decreases to 218 if MAC quires for chosen messages with arbitrary length can be requested.

Two modes of oviparity are known in cartilaginous fishes, (1) single oviparity where one egg case is retained in an oviduct for a short period and then deposited, quickly followed by another egg case, and (2) multiple oviparity where multiple egg cases are retained in an oviduct for a substantial period and deposited later when the embryo has developed to a large size in each case. Sarawak swellshark Cephaloscyllium sarawakensis of the family Scyliorhinidae from the South China Sea performs a new mode of oviparity, which is named "sustained single oviparity", characterized by a lengthy retention of a single egg case in an oviduct until the embryo attains a sizable length. The resulting fecundity of the Sarawak swellshark within a season is quite low, but this disadvantage is balanced by smaller body, larger neonates and quicker maturation. The Sarawak swellshark is further uniquely characterized by having glassy transparent egg cases, and this is correlated with a vivid polka-dot pattern of the embryos. Five modes of lecithotrophic (yolk-dependent) reproduction, i.e. short single oviparity, sustained single oviparity, multiple oviparity, yolk-sac viviparity of single pregnancy and yolk-sac viviparity of multiple pregnancy were discussed from an evolutionary point of view.

Background: Marital transitions are associated with adverse health events, such as mortality and cardiovascular disease. Since marital transitions (e.g., becoming widowed) are unavoidable life events, it is necessary to identify modifiable intermediate outcomes. Thus, we examined the association between marital transitions and vegetable intake among middle-aged and older Japanese adults. Methods: This longitudinal study included Japanese adults aged 40–79 years who received an annual health checkup between 2007 and 2011 (baseline) and five years later (follow-up). Marital transitions were classified as whether and what type of transition occurred during the five-year period and comprised five groups: consistently married, married to widowed, married to divorced, not married to married, and remained not married. Changes in total vegetable, green and yellow vegetable, and light-colored vegetable intake from baseline to follow-up were calculated using the Food Frequency Questionnaire. Results: Data from 4813 participants were analyzed (mean age: 59.4 years; 44.1% women). Regarding marital transitions, 3,960 participants were classified as “consistently married,” 135 as “married to widowed,” 40 as “married to divorced,” 60 as “not married to married,” and 529 as “remained not married.” Multivariable linear regression analysis revealed that compared to consistently married, married to widowed was inversely associated with the change in total vegetable intake (β = -16.64, SE = 7.68, p = 0.030) and light-colored vegetable intake (β = -11.46, SE = 4.33, p = 0.008).Conclusion: Our findings suggest that being widowed could result in a reduced intake of vegetables. Hence, dietary counseling according to marital situation is necessary.

Aims: We aimed to develop and validate risk prediction models to estimate the absolute 10-year risk of death from coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Methods: We evaluated a total of 44,869 individuals aged 40–79 years from eight Japanese prospective cohorts to derive coefficients of risk equations using cohort-stratified Cox proportional hazard regression models. Discrimination (C-index) of the equation was examined in each cohort and summarised using random-effect meta-analyses. Calibration of the equation was assessed using Hosmer-Lemeshow chi-squared statistic. Results: Within a median follow-up of 12.7 years, we observed 765 deaths due to CVD (276 CHDs and 489 strokes). After backward selection, age, sex, current smoking, systolic blood pressure (SBP), proteinuria, prevalent diabetes mellitus, the ratio of total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TC/HDLC), interaction terms of age by SBP, and age by current smoking were retained as predictors for CHD. Sex was excluded in the stroke equation. We did not consider TC/HDLC as a risk factor for the stroke and CVD equations. The pooled C-indices for CHD, stroke, and CVD were 0.83, 0.80, and 0.81, respectively, and the corresponding p-values of the Hosmer-Lemeshow tests were 0.18, 0.003, and 0.25, respectively. Conclusions: Risk equations in the present study can adequately estimate the absolute 10-year risk of death from CHD, stroke, and CVD. Future work will evaluate the system as an education and risk communication tool for primary prevention of CHD and stroke.

Carotid artery stenting (CAS) is performed as a treatment for carotid artery stenosis. However, lipid-rich plaques cause embolic complications and sequelae. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) can identify lipid components by applying a near-infrared absorption pattern, and the distribution of lipid components can be evaluated as the maximum lipid core burden index (maxLCBI). Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) equipped with NIRS has been clinically applied recently, and its diagnostic usefulness and validation have been reported for coronary arteries; however, its consistency with actual pathological diagnosis in carotid artery lesions has not been validated. In this study, we investigated the consistency between the maxLCBI values and histopathological diagnoses. Patients with cervical carotid artery stenosis who underwent carotid endarterectomy (CEA) were examined in this prospective study. Pathological diagnosis was determined after NIRS evaluation, which was performed on the extracted plaques ex vivo. The histological slices of decalcified and paraffin-embedded sections were stained by hematoxylin–eosin (HE) and Elastica van Gieson (EVG), and for low-density lipoprotein (LDL), C-reactive protein (CRP), CD68, and glycophorin A. The correlation between maxLCBI values and histological findings. Seventy lesions assessed by NIRS were pathologically analyzed. There was a positive linear correlation between maxLCBI values and pathological findings as determined by HE (angle), HE (area%), EVG, CRP, and CD68 staining (respectively, r = 0.624, p <0.001; r = 0.578, p <0.001; r = 0.534, p <0.001; r = 0.723, p <0.001; r = 0.653, p <0.001). In conclusion, the maxLCBI values assessed by NIRS showed a significant positive linear correlation with pathological evaluations in carotid lesions. The maxLCBI values in carotid arteries are consistent with pathological evaluations.
