This paper deals with the X-radiation from television receivers and video display terminals. The bremsstrahlung production rate was calculated according to the thick target theory, and the transmitted X-radiation was measured by the spectrometry method. The calculated and the measured results were compared and discussed. In addition, evidences were shown that only the highest energy component of the bremsstrahlung can penetrate the cathode ray tube.

Interleukin-4 (IL4) and interleukin-13 (IL13) are involved in the initial response of T helper 2 lymphocytes through the activation of the IL4 receptor alpha (IL4RA), which is a common receptor chain for these cytokines. In humans, several single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) identified in the IL4R and in interleukin coding genes were associated with atopic disorders. However, the association between canine IL4R polymorphisms and atopic disorders has not been investigated yet. This study aimed to determine the associations between four non-synonymous SNPs and canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) in shiba inu and miniature dachshund populations. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis were used to genotype four polymorphisms of canine IL4R and IL13 in 34 shiba inu and 19 miniature dachshund patients with CAD, as well as 29 shiba inu and 39 miniature dachshund patients without the condition. Results from miniature dachshunds revealed a potential association between the presence of minor A allele rs24378020 and CAD (odds ratio, 0.10; 95% confidence interval, 0.01–0.85; poriginal=0.0062). This CAD resistance allele led to an amino acid substitution (Arg688Cys) that could impair IL4 and IL13 signaling. In shiba inu patients, rs24378020 was fixed by homozygosity of the major G allele. No association was found between the remaining three evaluated SNPs and CAD. Nevertheless, the study suggests that the IL4R Cys688 variant reduces the risk of CAD in miniature dachshunds.

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of neuromuscular electrical stimulation on facial muscle strength and oral function in stroke patients with facial palsy. [Subjects and Methods] Nine subjects received the electrical stimulation and traditional dysphagia therapy. Electrical stimulation was applied to stimulate each subject’s facial muscles 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week, for 4 weeks. [Results] Subjects showed significant improvement in cheek and lip strength and oral function after the intervention. [Conclusion] This study demonstrates that electrical stimulation improves facial muscle strength and oral function in stroke patients with dysphagia.

The Pacific Plate subducts beneath the Australian Plate at a rate of ~5 cm/year along the northern Hikurangi trough off the North Island, New Zealand, and the seismic activity is very high. In addition to regular earthquakes, slow earthquakes including slow slip events (SSEs) and tremor have been observed offshore on the shallow plate interface. SSEs are relatively frequent in the northern part of the Hikurangi subduction margin, occurring every 1-2 years. Therefore, this frequent, repeating occurrence offers an excellent chance to capture accompanying seismicity as well as the SSE itself using temporary deployments of ocean bottom instruments directly overlying the shallow (<10 km) SSE source.We conducted an international collaborative observation from May, 2014, through June, 2015, using 15 ocean bottom seismometers (OBSs) and 24 ocean bottom pressure gauges (OBPs). We were successful in capturing an SSE directly beneath the network, and obtained a precise slip distribution of the event. The slip reached near the trough axis, and that the slip was reduced in the area of subducted seamounts. The tremor activity initiated near the end of the SSE and it lasted for more than two weeks, within a limited region over one of the subducted seamounts. Stress inversions from focal mechanisms of earthquakes during the SSE cycle revealed temporal variations in stress orientations suggestive of an increase in pore fluid pressure within the slab and along the plate interface during the period prior to SSEs in the area, and a subsequent reduction of pore fluid pressure following SSEs. Furthermore, variations of shear wave splitting delay times and Vp/Vs suggested that filling and emptying of cracks and pore spaces accompanied the fluid pressure changes. These observations of long-lasting tremor activity and temporal variation of focal mechanisms and cracks in tandem with the occurrence of SSEs suggest a potential role of fault-valving in the generation of slow earthquakes.We conducted another temporary OBS deployment from Oct. 2018 through Oct. 2019 using 5 OBSs in the same region of the 2014-2015 observation spanning the subducted seamount where we recorded offshore tremor activity previously. A large SSE occurred during the observation period in April-May 2019 around our OBS network, and we were successful in capturing seismic activity accompanying the SSE. The seismicity increased around the start of the SSE and continued throughout the event. Some of the activity shows a large low frequency component, and it is likely that tremors were activated. We are conducting further investigations.

As typical periodontopathic bacteria, Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis) and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (A. actinomycetemcomitans) were exposed to electrolyzed ion-reduced water (ERI) and ERI containing 1% sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC-Na) (ERI-1% CMC-Na), and the time course of their bactericidal action was evaluated. More than 99% of each bacteria species were killed after exposure to each solution for 15 sec. In addition, 1% CMC-Na, which was added to prolong bactericidal action, did not affect the bactericidal action of ERI. Its bactericidal action was concentration-dependent. No viable P. gingivalis bacteria were observed at a concentration of 15% of the undiluted solution and no viable A. actinomycetemcomitans bacteria were observed at a concentration of 50%, indicating differences in the bactericidal action of ERI for the two bacteria species. These results suggest that ERI may be extremely useful in preventing and treating periodontal diseases.

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of interferential current therapy on the waist circumference and visceral fat length in obese women. [Subjects and Methods] In this study, we selected 30 patients whose body mass index was over 25 kg/m2. The subjects were randomly assigned to receive interferential current therapy three times a week for four weeks (n=15) and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation three times a week for four weeks (n=15). Waist circumference was measured in cm using a tape measure with the participant in an upright posture, and the length of visceral fat was measured using a high-resolution, B-mode ultrasound machine. [Results] There was a statistically significant difference between the group of waist circumference and visceral fat length. The change of waist circumference and visceral fat length was larger the experimental group than the control group. [Conclusion] These results can be used as a basis for reducing the risk factors that increase mortality due to diseases and can prevent cardiovascular and other adult diseases caused by obesity.

マンノースレセプター (MR) は二種類のレクチン活性をもつ特徴的なバイファンクショナル分子である。N末端のシステインリッチ (CR) ドメインは内因性の酸性糖質を主に認識し、C型レクチンドメイン (CRD) は微生物などの表面糖鎖や、MRを介して体内から消失する分泌型の内因性糖タンパク質に結合する。本総説では、クリアランス (組織マクロファージ (Mφ) や洞様毛細血管の内皮に発現する場合)、抗原輸送 (樹状細胞(DC)上に発現する場合や可溶化型MRがリンパ組織へのターゲティングを介在する場合)、および細胞接着 (リンパ管内皮に発現する場合)におけるMRの役割を中心に、MRに関する生物学の最近の知見について取り上げる。

The study of intergenerational transmission of gender role attitudes (GRA) connects those about parenting mechanism of children's value, socialization, challenges of feminism and gender studies to patriarchy. Previous studies of the transmission of GRA between generations focused on the effects of socialization and symbolic interaction on the formation of GRA of children. Attitudes may change with children's own life-course events, such as entering labor market or starting family formation. The current paper studies if socialization at home remains significant predictor of children's GRA and if their life experiences play an important role in their early adulthood. Findings of analyzing panel data from the Taiwan Youth Project show that children are more egalitarian than their parents, female are more so than male, and children in adulthood are more so than in their youth. Parents have strong effects on shaping children's GRA, especially between mother and daughter. The results seem to support the exposure perspective. However, marriage makes adult children more conservative, especially for married men. The results seem to indicate more the acceptance of the reality by married couple than the backlash of egalitarian attitudes. The self-interested perspective is better to explain the changes of GRA in early adulthood of respondents.

Sensitive and specific detection of nucleic acids or proteins, which act as biomarkers, is of great importance in disease diagnosis. By combing the concept and operation of an endonuclease-assisted target-responsive amplification method and peroxidase-mimic DNAzyme generated by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT), a novel and facile colorimetric biosensor was developed for DNA and protein. Target DNA and thrombin were chosen as representative biomolecules. The production of cleavage fragments can only be triggered by specific target binding and the following nicking process, which do not occur spontaneously. In the signal collection part, numerous guanine-rich DNA were produced through the prolongation of cleavage fragments by TdT and formed highly effective DNAzyme with hemin. In this novel amplification method, we succeeded in realizing sensitive and specific detection of target DNA and thrombin. Under optimal conditions, target DNA can be detected as low as 1 pM, and thrombin with a detection limit of 100 pM. The method also proves the potential versatility and feasibility of TdT-generated DNAzyme in various bio-analyses.

[Purpose] The aim of this study was to investigate the availability, usage, and factors affecting usage of electrophysical agents by physical therapists in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. [Subjects and Methods] Questionnaires were sent to all 1,571 physical therapists working in 245 institutions within Nagano Prefecture. A total of 1,110 questionnaires were returned, out of which 1,099 (70%) questionnaires containing valid responses were analyzed. Frequencies and percentages were calculated for 22 modalities with regards to availability, usage, rate of usage, and confidence level in usage. Factors affecting usage and the relationship between rate of usage and confidence level (Spearman’s rho) were also determined. [Results] The top three responses for the various outcome measures were as follows: (1) hot packs (88%), low frequency stimulators (76%), and ultrasound (68%) for availability; (2) hot packs (72%), ultrasound (61%), and cold packs (59%) for usage; (3) hot packs (75%), cold spray (49%), and ultrasound (44%) for confidence in usage; and (4) equipment availability (80%), past experience (79%), and research evidence (78%) for factors affecting usage. There was a significant positive relationship between confidence and usage for all modalities, except for ultraviolet radiation, iontophoresis, and magnetic field. [Conclusion] Usage was strongly correlated with confidence, with the top three used modalities also being the ones with the highest confidence in usage.

The oxidation of pure copper in oxygen with and without water vapor was investigated as a function of temperature, oxygen pressure, and water vapor pressure using thermogravimetric analysis. The rate of the oxidation was increased with increasing temperature from 500 to 700°C and followed by the parabolic rate law regardless of the presence of water vapor. The activation energy for the oxidation was 90.67 kJ/mol in dry oxygen and 95.86 kJ/mol in oxygen with water vapor. The change of oxygen pressure without water vapor does not affect the oxidation rate at given temperatures. However, increasing water vapor pressure from 0.39 to 0.58 atm resulted in higher oxidation rate due to the increase of copper vacancies. CuO whiskers were observed and their growth seems to be enhanced by the presence of water vapor.
