A literature-based taxonomic catalogue of the nemertean species (Phylum Nemertea) reported from Japanese waters is provided, listing 19 families, 45 genera, and 120 species as valid. Applications of the following species names to forms previously recorded from Japanese waters are regarded as uncertain: Amphiporus cervicalis, Amphiporus depressus, Amphiporus lactifloreus, Cephalothrix filiformis, Cephalothrix linearis, Cerebratulus fuscus, Lineus vegetus, Lineus bilineatus, Lineus gesserensis, Lineus grubei, Lineus longifissus, Lineus mcintoshii, Nipponnemertes pulchra, Oerstedia venusta, Prostoma graecense, and Prostoma grande. The identities of the taxa referred to by the following four nominal species require clarification through future investigations: Cosmocephala japonica, Dicelis rubra, Dichilus obscurus, and Nareda serpentina. The nominal species established from Japanese waters are tabulated. In addition, a brief history of taxonomic research on Japanese nemerteans is reviewed.

Background: In regions with a high prevalence of peanut allergy (PA), there is a consensus that the introduction of peanuts in early infancy is preventive against the development of PA. However, few studies have investigated whether the introduction of peanuts to infants is associated with PA in regions with a low prevalence of PA, including Japan.Methods: We used data from 74,240 mother–child pairs who participated in the Japan Environment and Children’s Study, a prospective birth cohort recruited between January 2011 and March 2014. A logistic regression model was used to analyze the association between infantile peanut introduction and PA at the age of 4 years with non-infantile peanut introduction as the reference group, adjusted for potential confounders.Results: The percentage of infantile peanut introduction was 4.9% (n=3294) and 286 (0.4%) participants had allergic symptoms to peanuts at 4 years of age. Of all participants, 129 (0.2%) had PA at 4 years of age, which was defined as allergic symptoms and sensitization to peanuts. Those with infantile peanut introduction had a lower prevalence of PA than those without infantile peanut introduction, although this did not reach statistical significance (adjusted odds ratio: 0.53, 95% confidence interval, 0.17–1.68). Sensitivity analysis using IgE-mediated symptoms caused by peanuts as the outcome showed a similar result in relation to infantile peanut introduction.Conclusions: In countries with a low prevalence of PA, the effect of infantile peanut introduction on PA prevention was unclear.

The H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV) is an unmanned transfer vehicle that will rendezvous with manned facilities and deliver up to six tons of cargo. HTV is a key space transportation system technology in Japan together with the H-IIA/H-IIB launch vehicle and is designed to fully satisfy the manned safety requirements of the International Space Station (ISS) program. Therefore, the technology and its system acquired through HTV development and operation will be widely utilized in future manned transportation and lunar and planetary exploration missions.

We evaluated the mass concentration levels and long-term trends of black carbon (BC) in the historical and future scenario simulations using 12 climate models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) for East Asia, the region with the largest anthropogenic emissions. By comparing them with surface observations at two regionally representative sites, Fukue and Noto, for the period of 2009-2020, we found that the CMIP6 multi-model mean was approximately two times higher than the observed BC concentrations and did not reproduce the observed decreasing trend before 2014. Sensitivity simulations of emission inventories using a chemical transport model, GEOS-Chem, suggested that the overestimation and increasing trend of Chinese BC emissions in the CMIP6 historical inventory (CEDSv2017-05-18) were responsible for the higher concentrations and opposite trends in the CMIP6 BC simulations. The direct radiative effect of BC for CEDS was estimated to be 72% larger in East Asia than that for the ECLIPSEv6b inventory, which reproduced the observed BC concentrations reasonably well.

Endovascular therapy (EVT) for real-world patients after extended time frames is associated with concerns about its efficacy and safety. We conducted a prospective registry at 77 centers between November 2019 and October 2020. The registry criteria included patients treated with Trevo Retriever alone or in combined therapy with an aspiration catheter. The primary outcome was effective reperfusion (thrombolysis in cerebral infarction grade ≥ 2b), the secondary outcome was a modified Rankin scale 0-2 at 90 days, and the safety outcomes were worsening of neurologic symptoms within 24 h postoperatively, intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) within 24 h after EVT and mortality. We also exlpored the difference between patients whose last known well time (LKWT) to a puncture was less than 6 h (0-6 h) and those whose LKWT was 6 h or more but less than 24 h (6-24 h). Among the 1041 patients registered, 1025 patients were analyzed. The mean age was 76.9 years, and 53.6% of the participants were males. The 6-24 h group was 206/998 (20.6%), the median National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score at admission was 18, and the median Alberta Stroke Program Early CT score was 8. Combined technique as the first pass was used on 817 (79.7%) patients. The primary outcome was 934 (91.1%). The secondary outcome was 433/1021 (42.4%). Symptomatic ICH, any ICH, and mortality were 10/1019 (1.0%), 311/1019 (30.5%), and 75 (7.3%). In the subanalysis, the 6-24 h group was lower in NIHSS (median;18 vs 16), and the secondary outcome was not significantly different in the <6 h group. Even after treatment time expansion, this result was comparable to other Trevo-based trials and nationwide registries.

Falling due to unstable standing balance is considered to be the main cause of bone fractures, which lead elderly persons to becoming bedridden. Thus, the standing balance of elderly persons is being given increasingly greater attention. On the other hand, postural deformation caused by deformation in the spine and lower leg joints is considered to have an effect on standing balance. The objective of this study is to clarify the effect of postural deformation on the following three categories of standing balance; 1) the ability to immobilize Center of Gravity (COG) in standing statically, 2) the ability to control COG during movement and 3) the postural response induced by postural sway. Fifty elderly persons (age:77.7 ± 6.4 years old, fifty females) participated in this study. Postural deformation was measured using a Spinal Mouse, a device for non-invasive measurement of spinal curvature and photographic image in sagittal plane. In line with to Nakata's classification of postural deformation, subjects were classified by extension type, S-character deformation type, flexion type, hands on the knee type and normal group. In order to assess the ability to immobilize COG in static standing, Center of Pressure (COP) in static standing was measured for 30 sec. In order to assess the ability to control COG during movement, functional reach, maximal length of stride and the period of 10 m gait were measured. Postural response was induced by fore-aft perturbation of the platform on which the subjects stood. Postural responses were assessed by measuring both COP, and electromyography (EMG) of muscles in the lower legs. There was little significant difference among the five groups concerning postural deformation in every measured item, neither in the ability to immobilize COP in static standing, nor in the postural response induced by postural sway. However, the results of measured items concerning the ability to control COG during movement were significantly worse in flexion type and hands on the knee type compared with the normal group. It was suggested that postural deformation in elderly persons effects exclusively on the ability to control COG during movement in standing balance.

Background: The relationship between the season of birth, allergen sensitization, and allergic rhinitis have been inconsistent, and there are no studies that simultaneously consider vitamin D and allergen exposure. This study aimed to determine the associations between the season of birth, house dust mite (HDM) and Japanese cedar pollen (JCP) sensitization, and allergic rhinitis and pollinosis, while taking vitamin D levels and allergen exposure into account.Methods: This study included 4323 participants in the Sub-Cohort Study of the Japan Environment and Children's Study. A logistic regression model was used to analyze the association between the season of birth and sensitization to JCP or HDM (judged by specific immunoglobulin E) at age 2 and allergic rhinitis or pollinosis at age 3, adjusted for HDM or JCP exposure and vitamin D levels with potential confounders.Results: Participants born in spring or summer were more likely to have pollinosis than were those born in winter (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 2.08, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.13-3.82 for spring; aOR: 1.89, 95% CI: 1.03-3.47 for summer). Participants born in summer were more likely to have HDM sensitization than were those born in winter (Der p 1, aOR: 1.53, 95% CI: 1.10-2.15; Der f 1, aOR: 1.44, 95% CI: 1.03-2.01). Exposure to JCP and HDM were associated with pollinosis and HDM sensitization, respectively.Conclusions: Spring and summer births were associated with the development of pollinosis, and summer birth was associated with HDM sensitization, even when vitamin D and allergen exposure were considered. Further studies on mechanisms other than vitamin D and allergen exposure are required.

We designed a seismic intensity meter and a data collection network for use in the Philippines. The station unit deployed consists of a digital acceleration sensor with 0.1 gal noise and a compact Microsoft Windows PC. The station unit, which is designed to be installed in local government offices, calculates values every 10 seconds for the PEIS (Philippine Earthquake Intensity Scale), and these values are shown on a display and transmitted to the main PHIVOLCS office over the Internet. One hundred units to be deployed throughout the country are now being distributed to offices.

To clarify the mechanism by which curdlan sulfate (CRDS) inhibits human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1 infection, we examined its influence on the binding of gp120 to CD4 molecules on T cells and macrophages, as well as on the production of TNF-α by gp120-stimulated macrophages (which promotes HIV-1 replication). CRDS treatment of cells not only inhibited the binding of HIV-1 gp120 to CD4+ cells, but also inhibited TNF-α production induced by gp120. Inhibition of HIV-1 infection by CRDS may be related to these two actions.

In 855 Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes receiving once weekly dulaglutide 0.75 mg in 3 phase 3 studies, the effects on efficacy and safety at week 26 (last observation carried forward) were investigated in a post hoc descriptive analysis of subgroups of age (<65 years [young], ≥65 years [elderly]) and body mass index (BMI [<25 kg/m2, ≥25 kg/m2]). The 4 subgroups were as follows: 1) the young/low-BMI subgroup (Y/L) (n = 255); 2) the young/high-BMI subgroup (Y/H) (n = 386), 3) the elderly/low-BMI subgroup (E/L) (n = 137), and 4) the elderly/high-BMI subgroup (E/H) (n = 77). The mean changes from baseline in glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and body weight, respectively, were -1.69% and -0.29 kg in the Y/L subgroup; -1.48% and -0.09 kg in the Y/H subgroup; -1.68% and -0.20 kg in the E/L subgroup; and -1.72% and -0.26 kg in the E/H subgroup. The incidences of nausea and hypoglycemia, respectively, were 6.7% and 11.0% in the Y/L subgroup; 7.0% and 8.0% in the Y/H subgroup; 10.2% and 18.2% in the E/L subgroup; and 3.9% and 22.1% in the E/H subgroup. Dulaglutide improved HbA1c regardless of age or BMI; a higher incidence of hypoglycemia was observed in elderly patients compared to younger patients.

3, 3"-Di-O-acyl-4"-O-sulfonyl and 3, 3"-di-O-acyl-4"-O-alkyl derivatives of spiramycin I were synthesized and evaluated by four parameters, antibacterial activity, affinity to ribosomes, lypophilicity and therapeutic effects. Among them, 3, 3"-di-O-acetyl-4"-O-mesyl and 3, 3"-di-O-acetyl-4"-O-methylspiramycin I having relatively small substituents at 4"-position were the most effective in mouse protection tests, and the results were comparable to acetylspiramycin.

The bin packing problem is a problem of finding an assignment of a sequence of items to a minimum number of bins, each of capacity one. An online algorithm for the bin packing problem is an algorithm that irrevocably assigns each item one by one from the head of the sequence. Gutin, Jensen, and Yeo (2006) considered a version in which all items are only of two different sizes and the online algorithm knows the two possible sizes in advance, and gave an optimal online algorithm for the case when the larger size exceeds 1/2. In this paper we provide an optimal online algorithm for some of the cases when the larger size is at most 1/2, on the basis of a framework that facilitates the design and analysis of algorithms.

The phase boundaries pertaining to γ2 (FePt) and γ3 (FePt3) phases in the Fe-Pt system have been re-examined by measuring (1) the compositions of interphase boundaries in diffusion couples, (2) the equilibrium compositions in two-phase alloys and (3) the electrical resistivity as a function of temperature. The results obtained by the three methods are consistent with each other. The γ (fcc solid solution) ↔ γ2+γ3 eutectoid has been found to be located at a point higher in Pt concentration and lower in temperature than in the currently adopted phase diagram, the stability range of the γ2 phase exhibits considerable asymmetry. Other phase boundaries, as well as the ferromagnetic ↔ paramagnetic transition in the γ2 phase detected by the resistivity measurements, are in fair agreement with the data in the literature.

Bacteria can inhabit a wide range of environmental conditions, including extremes in pH ranging from 1 to 11. The primary strategy employed by bacteria in acidic environments is to maintain a constant cytoplasmic pH value. However, many data demonstrate that bacteria can grow under conditions in which pH values are out of the range in which cytoplasmic pH is kept constant. Based on these observations, a novel notion was proposed that bacteria have strategies to survive even if the cytoplasm is acidified by low external pH. Under these conditions, bacteria are obliged to use acid-resistant systems, implying that multiple systems having the same physiological role are operating at different cytoplasmic pH values. If this is true, it is quite likely that bacteria have genes that are induced by environmental stimuli under different pH conditions. In fact, acid-inducible genes often respond to another factor(s) besides pH. Furthermore, distinct genes might be required for growth or survival at acid pH under different environmental conditions because functions of many systems are dependent on external conditions. Systems operating at acid pH have been described to date, but numerous genes remain to be identified that function to protect bacteria from an acid challenge. Identification and analysis of these genes is critical, not only to elucidate bacterial physiology, but also to increase the understanding of bacterial pathogenesis.

Delayed foreign body reactions to either or both clipping and coating materials have been reported in several small series; however, studies in the titanium clip era are scarce. This study aims to survey the contemporary status of such reactions to titanium clips and coating materials. Among patients who received a total of 2327 unruptured cerebral aneurysmal surgeries, 12 developed delayed intraparenchymal reactions during outpatient magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) follow-up. A retrospective investigation was conducted. The patients' average age was 58.6 (45-73) years, and 11 were women. The aneurysms were located in the middle cerebral artery (n = 7), internal carotid artery (n = 4), or anterior communicating artery (AComA, n = 1). In 10 patients, additional coating with tiny cotton fragments was applied to the residual neck after clipping with titanium clips; however, only the clipping with titanium clips was performed in the remaining two. The median time from surgery to diagnosis was 4.5 (0.3-60) months. Seven (58.3%) patients were asymptomatic, and three developed neurological deficits. MRI findings were characterized by a solid- or rim-enhancing lobulated mass adjacent to the clip with surrounding parenchymal edema. In 11 patients, the lesions reduced in size or disappeared; however, in one patient, an AComA aneurysm was exacerbated, necessitating its removal along with optic nerve decompression. In conclusion, cotton material is a strongly suspected cause of delayed foreign body reactions, and although extremely rare, titanium clips alone may also induce such a reaction. The prognosis is relatively good with steroid therapy; however, caution is required when the aneurysm is close to the optic nerve, as in AComA aneurysms.

To computationally investigate the recent experimental finding such that extracellular ATP release caused by exogeneous mechanical forces promote wound closure, we introduce a mathematical model, the Cellular Potts Model (CPM), which is a popular discretized model on a lattice, where the movement of a “cell” is determined by a Monte Carlo procedure. In the experiment, it was observed that there is mechanosensitive ATP release from the leading cells facing the wound gap and the subsequent extracellular Ca2+ influx. To model these phenomena, the Reaction-Diffusion equations for extracellular ATP and intracellular Ca2+ concentrations are adopted and combined with CPM, where we also add a polarity term because the cell migration is enhanced in the case of ATP release. From the numerical simulations using this hybrid model, we discuss effects of the collective cell migration due to the ATP release and the Ca2+ influx caused by the mechanical forces and the consequent promotion of wound closure.

Purpose: Deep learning reconstruction (DLR) has been recommended as useful for improving image quality. Moreover, compressed sensing (CS) or DLR has been proposed as useful for improving temporal resolution and image quality on MR sequences in different body fields. However, there have been no reports regarding the utility of DLR for image quality and T-factor assessment improvements on T2-weighted imaging (T2WI), short inversion time (TI) inversion recovery (STIR) imaging, and unenhanced- and contrast-enhanced (CE) 3D fast spoiled gradient echo (GRE) imaging with and without CS in comparison with thin-section multidetector-row CT (MDCT) for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients. The purpose of this study was to determine the utility of DLR for improving image quality and the appropriate sequence for T-category assessment for NSCLC patients.Methods: As subjects for this study, 213 pathologically diagnosed NSCLC patients who underwent thin-section MDCT and MR imaging as well as T-factor diagnosis were retrospectively enrolled. SNR of each tumor was calculated and compared by paired t-test for each sequence with and without DLR. T-factor for each patient was assessed with thin-section MDCT and all MR sequences, and the accuracy for T-factor diagnosis was compared among all sequences and thin-section CT by means of McNemar’s test.Results: SNRs of T2WI, STIR imaging, unenhanced thin-section Quick 3D imaging, and CE-thin-section Quick 3D imaging with DLR were significantly higher than SNRs of those without DLR (P < 0.05). Diagnostic accuracy of STIR imaging and CE-thick- or thin-section Quick 3D imaging was significantly higher than that of thin-section CT, T2WI, and unenhanced thick- or thin-section Quick 3D imaging (P < 0.05).Conclusion: DLR is thus considered useful for image quality improvement on MR imaging. STIR imaging and CE-Quick 3D imaging with or without CS were validated as appropriate MR sequences for T-factor evaluation in NSCLC patients.
