Botryococcus braunii strain Austin and strain Berkeley cultured under the same conditions contained 27.4g and 34.0g of lipids per 100g of dry alga, respectively. The lipids in the former strain were 25.5% hydrocarbons, 58.8% other nonpolar lipids, and 15.7% polar lipids, and those in the latter strain were 71.6%, 9.2%, and 19.2%, respectively. Distinct differences were also observed in the components of the nonpolar and polar lipids, especially in the latter, between the strains. The fatty acid composition of the nonpolar lipid fraction in Austin strain was unique, oleic acid being 81% of the total acids.

Background:Echocardiographic data on the cardiac structure and function in elderly patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and heart failure (HF) are limited. This subcohort study of the ANAFIE Registry analyzed echocardiographic parameters to identify cardiac structural and functional characteristics.Methods and Results:Of 32,726 subjects in the ANAFIE population, 1,494 (4.6%) were entered as the echocardiography subcohort. Half of the patients, including those with persistent and permanent AF, older age (≥80 years), and CHADS2score ≥2, had left atrial (LA) volume index ≥48 mL/m2, indicating severe LA enlargement. LA enlargement significantly correlated with impaired LA reservoir function, regardless of age and CHADS2score. Types of AF and rhythm were strongly related to LA volume and reservoir function (P<0.0001). Moderate-to-severe mitral and tricuspid regurgitation were significantly more common, and the early diastolic mitral inflow velocity to mitral annulus velocity ratio was significantly higher among patients with than without HF history (all, P<0.0001).Conclusions:In this subcohort, LA enlargement correlated with impaired LA reservoir function. Elderly patients with non-valvular AF and a history of HF had LA enlargement and dysfunction, increased LV mass index, low LV ejection fraction, and high heart rate.

As free-living crows are a potential source of Campylobacter infections in broilers and cattle, we characterized Campylobacter spp. isolated from crows using multilocus sequence typing and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. We obtained 82 samples from 27 birds captured at seven different times using a trap set in Tochigi prefecture, Japan. Campylobacter jejuni was isolated from 55 (67.1%) of the 82 samples and classified into 29 sequence types, of which 21 were novel. Tetracycline and streptomycin resistance rates were 18.2% and 3.6%, respectively. These results show that most types of C. jejuni infecting crows differ from those isolated from humans, broilers, and cattle. Thus, the importance of free-living crows as reservoirs of Campylobacter infections in broilers and cattle may be limited.

The discharge of high-strength oily wastewater adversely affects the environment; therefore, the treatment of wastewater containing fats, oils, and grease from the food industry is of importance. In this study, we used a membrane bioreactor (MBR) to treat Ramen noodle-soup wastewater, and we evaluated the optimal oil concentration in the wastewater for the startup of the MBR treatment in winter and summer. The MBR system had a sufficient startup in both seasons when fed with a 20-fold dilution of the original oily wastewater, containing approximately 950 to 1,200 mg/L oil and approximately 3,000 to 4,400 mg/L biological oxygen demand (BOD; BOD-SS load of 0.1 to 0.2 kg/kg/d). The reactor performance in winter were relatively stable during the operation. While, activated sludge microbes in summer were not highly active with a 40-fold dilution of wastewater, because of the decreased mixed liquor suspended solid concentration during the operation period. Population shifts in the sludge microbiome with increasing oil concentrations were analyzed using high-throughput sequencing, and the relative abundance of operational taxonomic units belonging to the phylum Bacteroidetes were highest in both winter and summer when fed with 20-fold dilution of the wastewater. In particular, the family Chitinophagaceae was dominant, with relative abundances of 13.5% in winter and 5.1% in summer, suggesting that this family may play important roles in the startup of a MBR treating the wastewater.

Adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) is characterized by high spiking fever, evanescent rash, and arthritis. However, AOSD rarely presents with severe acute kidney injury (AKI). We herein present the case of a 56-year-old woman with new-onset AOSD who rapidly developed AKI. A physical examination and laboratory data revealed spiking fever, evanescent rash, thrombocytopenia, hyperferritinemia, and azotemia. The patient was diagnosed with AOSD complicated by AKI and macrophage activation syndrome. Treatment with high-dose steroids, hemodialysis, and plasma exchange successfully resolved her AKI. In this report, we review previously published reports on AOSD accompanied by AKI and discuss this rare complication in AOSD.

The goal of this study is to perform correlation analysis of Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) results in posterior ligament complex (PLC) injury and define the morphological traits of thoracolumbar (TL) burst fractures connected to PLC injury. Forty patients with surgically repaired TL burst fractures between January 2013 and December 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were split into two groups for comparison based on MRI (Group P: patients with a confirmed or suspected PLC injury; Group N: patients with PLC injury denied). The radiographic morphological examination based on CT scans and clinical evaluation was performed and compared between two groups. The thoracolumbar injury classification and severity score (TLICS), the load sharing classification (LSC) scores, and the number of patients with neurological impairments were considerably greater in Group P. Loss of height of the fracture (loss height), local kyphosis of the fracture (local kyphosis), and supraspinous distance were significantly higher in Group P and significantly associated with PLC injuries indicating severe vertebral body destruction and traumatic kyphosis in multivariate logistic analysis [odds ratio: 1.90, 1.06, and 1.13, respectively]. Cutoff value for local kyphosis obtained from the receiver operating characteristic curve was 18.8. If local kyphosis is greater than 18.8 degrees on CT scans, we should take into account the probability of the highly damaged burst fracture associated with PLC injury. In this situation, we should carefully assess MRI to identify the spinal cord injury or spinal cord compression in addition to PLC injury because these instances likely present with neurological abnormalities.

Cancellation of self interference (SI) is an important technology in order for wireless communication system devices to perform full-duplex communication. In this paper, we propose a novel self-interference cancellation using null beamforming to be applied entire IEEE 802.11 frame including the legacy part for full-duplex wireless communication on Cooperative MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output). We evaluate the SI cancellation amount by the proposed method using a field programmable gate array (FPGA) and software defined radio (SDR), and show the experimental results. In the experiment, it is confirmed that the amount of SI cancellation by the proposed method was at least 18dB. The SI cancellation amount can be further potentiated with more accurate CSI (channel state information) by increasing the transmission power. It is shown that SI can be suppressed whole frame which includes legacy preamble part. The proposed method can be applied to next generation wireless communication standards as well.

Generally, the characterization of a metal layer formed on a planar substrate has been achieved using scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. These techniques provide details of the surface and/or the cross-section of a planar structure with high resolution. However, the evaluation of sphere-like structures is troublesome owing to the necessity to observe a sample from various angles and/or to calculate the yield from many values obtained for many samples, since the conventional methods can observe a sample only from one direction. We have developed a simple evaluation method for a thin metal layer on plastic microbeads based on its light-scattering properties using dark-field microscopy coupled with a spectrometer. The light-scattering intensity of gold-nanoparticle-coated microbeads depends significantly on the gold coverage. We believe that our study is significant because it describes the development and evaluation of the surface coverage of a thin metal layer on a sphere-like microstructure.

Introduction: Massive hemothorax due to thoracic vertebral fractures (MHTVF) is a potentially lethal condition; however, its epidemiological and clinical data have been rarely described. Thus, in this study, we aimed to evaluate the incidence, predictive factors, and clinical features of MHTVF.Methods: This retrospective cohort study enrolled 202 consecutive patients (136 male and 66 female patients) with thoracic vertebral fractures treated at our institute between January 2009 and December 2019. Their mean age was 60.7 (range, 17-90) years. Unstable fractures accounted for 57.4% (n=116) of the total fractures. The patients were then divided into MHTVF and non-MHTVF groups. We assessed the following MHTVF-associated factors: sex, age, history of medical conditions, anticoagulation/antiplatelet drug use, injury severity score, anatomical distribution of levels of the vertebral fractures, fracture type, and presence or absence of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) fracture.Results: In total, eight patients (six men and two women) with a mean age of 68.9 years (range, 22-85 years) were determined to exhibit MHTVF. The incidence of MHTVF in patients with unstable thoracic spinal fractures was 6.9%, whereas none of those with stable spinal fractures exhibited MHTVF. Factors like type B (p=0.049) and DISH (p=0.017) fractures were noted to be significantly associated with the MHTVF. Three patients experienced shock upon arrival, whereas two exhibited delayed shock. Chest tube insertion and/or emergency thoracotomy was performed. The survival rate was 100.0%.Conclusions: MHTVF is not rare. Because type B and DISH fractures are identified as predictive factors of MHTVF, it must be carefully treated to avoid preventable death even after hospitalization in patients with these thoracic fractures.

Summary: Myocardial contusion is the most common cardiac injury from blunt chest trauma (BCT), whereas isolated valve injury is uncommon. We report a case of acute mitral regurgitation (MR) due to isolated valve injury after BCT. A 60-year-old man received an impact on his left chest by a car wheel three weeks prior to visiting our hospital. At the time a diagnosis of contusion of the chest wall without rib and sternal fractures was made. Thereafter, the patient had progressive worsening of heart failure symptoms. Eventually he developed dyspnea on slight exertion but echocardiographic evaluation was not performed at the time of diagnosis or during the three weeks prior to admission. At admission a holosystolic murmur was heard. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed prolapse of the posterior mitral leaflet due to torn chordae tendineae with severe MR and normal left ventricular wall motion. At surgery, torn chordae tendineae and a leaflet tear of the posterior leaflet were detected, and mitral valve repair was achieved without residual MR. Pathological examination of the torn chordae showed no findings of endocarditis or myxomatous degeneration. Echocardiography may play an important role for accurate and prompt diagnosis of cardiac lesions in patients with recent or a history of high-energy BCT.

White breads with Yudane dough (Yudane bread) were made from commercial hard flour by the no first fermentation method. Yudane dough was prepared by mixing boiling water and flour at a ratio of 1:1. The dough at 20 and 40% (w/w, flour base) was added to the total bread dough. In the Yudane bread making method, an extended final proof, lower dough gas retention and gassing power, as well as specific loaf volume were observed compared to conventional bread making (control) without Yudane dough. Also, the moisture content of the Yudane breads increased with increasing water absorption for bread making. The total and reducing saccharide and maltose contents in the water-soluble fraction of Yudane bread also increased with the volume of added Yudane dough. The Yudane breads were very soft just after baking, and the staling (temporal changes in hardness) and starch retrogradation of the breads were somewhat reduced compared to the control. Further, the breads showed generally larger cohesiveness, i.e., the index of bread elasticity. Kinetic analysis indicated reduced bread staling and starch retrogradation rates compared to control. The data showed that the slow staling and unique texture of the Yudane breads were mainly due to the high moisture content, saccharide contents, and flour amylases-modification of swollen and gelatinized starch in the breads, which was related to the higher water absorption and starch swelling and gelatinization levels of the added Yudane dough.

Background: There is limited evidence regarding the relationship between Diabetes mellitus (DM) in middle age and mild cognitive impairment after a follow-up. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels in middle age and cognitive function assessed using the Japanese version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA-J) in later life, following over 15 years of follow-up in the Aichi Workers’ Cohort Study in Japan.Methods: Participants were 253 former local government employees aged 60–79 years in 2018 who participated in a baseline survey conducted in 2002. Using baseline FBG levels and self-reported history, participants were classified into the normal, impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and, and DM groups. Total MoCA-J score ranges from 0 to 30, and cognitive impairment was defined as MoCA-J score ≤25 in this study. A general linear model was used to estimate the mean MoCA-J scores in the FBG groups, adjusted for age, sex, educational year, smoking status, alcohol consumption, physical activity, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, and estimated glomerular filtration rate.Results: The mean MoCA-J score in the total population was 25.0, and the prevalence of MoCA-J score ≤25 was 49.0%. Multivariable-adjusted total MoCA-J scores were 25.2, 24.8, and 23.4 in the normal, IFG, and DM groups, respectively. The odds ratio of MoCA-J score ≤25 in the DM group was 3.29.Conclusion: FBG level in middle age was negatively associated with total MoCA-J scores assessed later in life, independent of confounding variables.

Some anterior choroidal artery (AChA) infarctions in the posterior limbs of the internal capsule (plIC) have been reported to cause aphasia, typically with apparent paralysis. We herein report an 84-year-old woman with AChA infarction. Although her dysarthria remained mild with no apparent paralysis, we overlooked progression to branch atheromatous disease-related infarct with exacerbation of her anomia, which delayed the initiation of more intense therapy. Even in AChA infarction, especially when the lesion is located mainly in the anterior part of the plIC, as in our case, it is possible to encounter progressive stroke predominantly with aphasia.

Proton-transfer-reaction (PTR) mass spectrometry (MS), a widely used method for detecting trace-levels of volatile organic compounds in gaseous samples, can also be used for the analysis of small non-volatile molecules by using supercritical fluid as a transporter for the molecules. Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) is a method that permits lipophilic compounds to be rapidly and selectively extracted from complex matrices. The combination of the high sensitivity of PTR MS with the SFE is a potentially novel method for analyzing small molecules in a single cell, particularly for the analysis of lipophilic compounds. We preliminarily evaluated this method for analyzing the components of a single HeLa cell that is fixed on a stainless steel frit and is then directly introduces the SFE extracts into the PTR MS. A total of 200/91 ions were observed in positive/negative ion mode time-of-flight mass spectra, and the masses of 11/10 ions could be matched to chemical formulae obtained from the LipidMaps lipids structure database. Using various authentic lipophilic samples, the method could be used to detect free fatty acids in the sub-femtomole to femtomole order in the negative ion mode, the femtomole to sub-picomole order for fat-soluble vitamins, and the picomole order for poly aromatic hydrocarbons in both the positive and negative ion mode.

We have developed a rapid and sensitive analytical method for α-tocopherol and its oxidative products by combining online hyphenation of supercritical fluid extraction-supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) with proton transfer reaction (PTR) ionization mass spectrometry (MS). α-Tocopherol is a well-known antioxidant that plays a vital role in the antioxidant defense system in plant cells. However, studies on the cellular mechanisms of α-tocopherol have been limited owing to the lack of a rapid analytical method, which limits the comparison of plant cells incubated in various conditions. Additionally, complex sample preparation and long chromatography separation times are required. Moreover, the majority of the involved molecules are a combination of isomers, which must be separated before applying tandem MS. α-Tocopherol produces the α-tocopheroxyl radical in the first step of its antioxidant function; another ion with the same mass may also be generated from the source. SFC separation effectively distinguished the observed ions from their oxidative products in the sample and those produced during the ionization reaction process. This method enabled the measurement of α-tocopherol and its oxidative products such as α-tocopheroxyl radical and α-tocopheryl quinone in approximately 3 min per sample, including the time required for sample preparation.
