There exists a variety of theories of the glass transition and many more numerical models. But because the models need built-in complexity to prevent crystallization, comparisons with theory can be difficult. We study the dynamics of a deeply supersaturated monodisperse four-dimensional (4D) hard-sphere fluid, which has no such complexity, but whose strong intrinsic geometrical frustration inhibits crystallization, even when deeply supersaturated. As an application, we compare its behavior to the mode-coupling theory (MCT) of glass formation. We find MCT to describe this system better than any other structural glass formers in lower dimensions. The reduction in dynamical heterogeneity in 4D suggested by a milder violation of the Stokes-Einstein relation could explain the agreement. These results are consistent with a mean-field scenario of the glass transition.

Our previous study indicated that cytotoxicity of intraepithelial lymphocytes is a poor prognostic factor in feline intestinal T-cell lymphoma (FITL), but the effect of cytotoxic lymphocytes on mucosal epithelium is still unknown. Thus, we investigated the association between cytotoxic lymphocytes and mucosal epithelium in 71 cases of feline intestinal T-cell lymphoma (FITL): epithelial injury, basement membrane injury, cleaved-caspase-3 positivity of epithelial cells, and the number and Ki67 positivity of intraepithelial lymphocytes in granzyme B (GRB)+ and GRB- FITLs were evaluated. Epithelial injury score and the number of intraepithelial lymphocytes in granzyme B (GRB)+ FITL were significantly higher than those of GRB- FITL (P<0.05, P<0.05), but no significant differences were found in the basement membrane injury score, the percentage of cleaved-caspase-3+ epithelial cells, and the percentage of Ki67+ intraepithelial lymphocytes. There was a significant correlation between the epithelial injury score and the number of intraepithelial lymphocytes (P<0.05), but no significant correlation was observed between the epithelial injury score and Ki67+ percentage of intraepithelial lymphocytes. Because epithelial cell cleaved-caspase-3 positivity was observed in FITL, regardless of GRB expression in lymphocytes, GRB-mediated apoptosis may not contribute to epithelial injury in FITL. The association between increased number of intraepithelial lymphocytes and epithelial injury suggests that intraepithelial lymphocytes infiltration may contribute to epithelial injury in FITL.

Feline meningiomas usually have benign biological behavior, while canine and human meningiomas are often classified as grade 2 or 3. Activation of the platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and its receptor signal pathway through PDGFβ/Rβ autocrine and paracrine is considered to play an important role in the tumor proliferation and malignant transformation of human meningiomas. However, there have been few studies about the expression of these molecules in canine meningiomas and no studies about their expression in feline meningiomas. We analyzed the PDGFα/Rα and PDGFβ/Rβ expression in canine and feline meningiomas by immunohistochemistry and western blotting. Immunohistochemically, most canine meningiomas showed the expression of PDGFα (42/44; 95.5%), PDGFRα (44/44; 100%) and PDGFRβ (35/44; 79.5%), and a few showed the expression of PDGFβ (8/44; 18.2%). In contrast, feline meningiomas were immunopositive for PDGFRα and PDGFRβ in all cases (14/14; 100%), while no or a few cases expressed PDGFα (0/14; 0%) and PDGFβ (2/14; 14.3%). Western blotting revealed specific bands for PDGFα, PDGFRα and PDGFRβ, but not for PDGFβ in a canine meningioma. In a feline meningioma, specific bands for PDGFRα and PDGFRβ were detected, but not for PDGFα and PDGFβ. These results suggested that canine meningiomas commonly express PDGFα/Rα, and thus autocrine or paracrine PDGFα/Rα signaling may be involved in their initiation and progression. Moreover, PDGF negativity may be related to benign biological behavior and a low histopathological grade in feline meningioma.

The role of fish oil, primrose oil and their mixture in ameliorating the changes in Alzheimer’s like model was evaluated in rats. Primrose oil and primrose/fish oil mixture fatty acids composition was assessed by gas chromatography. The rat experiment consisted of 5 groups; the first fed on balanced diet as control normal (CN); the other four groups treated with intraperitoneal aluminum lactate and consumed dyslipidemic diet; one group served as control Alzheimer’s like disease (CA) while the other three groups (test groups) received daily oral dose from primrose oil, fish oil and primrose/fish oil mixture separately for 5 weeks. Results showed primrose oil and primrose/ fish oil mixture to contain gamma linolenic acid as 9.15 and 4.3% of total fatty acids, respectively. Eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic were present as 10.9 and 6.5 %, respectively in the oil mixture. Dyslipidemia and increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), plasma butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), brain malondialdehyde (MDA) and NO with decrease in plasma magnesium, brain catalase, reduced glutathione, body weight gain and brain weight were demonstrated in CA compared to CN. Brain histopathology and immuno-histochemistry showed neuronal degeneration and neurofibrillary tangles with elevated myeloperoxidase and nuclear factor-kappa B in CA compared to CN. The tested oils demonstrated neuro-protection reflected in the variable significant improvement of biochemical parameters, immuno-histochemistry and brain histopathology. Primrose/fish oil mixture was superior in reducing ESR, brain MDA, plasma activity of BChE and brain histopathological changes along with elevating plasma magnesium. Primrose/fish oil mixture and fish oil were more promising in improving plasma high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) than primrose. Fish oil was the most efficient in improving plasma total cholesterol (T-C), low density lipoprotein cholesterol and T-C /HDL-C. Primrose/fish oil mixture and primrose oil were superior in elevating brain catalase compared to fish oil. Other parameters were equally improved by the different oil treatments. Primrose oil, fish oil and their mixture reduced the progression of Alzheimer’s disease in rats with superiority to primrose/fish oil mixture.

A two-months-old, male, mixed breed cat presented with epileptic seizures. The cat was diagnosed with drug-resistant epilepsy, and died at 3-years of age. No gross lesion was found at necropsy. Histopathologically, the dentate gyrus granule cell layer of the hippocampus was irregularly arranged. Granule cells were dispersed and ectopic cells were sporadically observed in the molecular layer. The granule cells had an enlarged cytoplasm and swollen nucleus. Immunohistochemistry for NeuN and GFAP confirmed severe neuronal loss and mild gliosis in CA1. Binucleation and ischemic change were observed in the remaining pyramidal cells. This report describes a case of feline temporal lobe epilepsy and hippocampal sclerosis associated with dentate gyrus malformation.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of employees in flexible work from home has increased markedly along with a reliance on information communication technologies. This study investigated the role of an organisational factor, psychosocial safety climate (PSC; the climate for worker psychological health and safety), as an antecedent of these new kinds of demands (specifically work from home digital job demands) and their effect on work-life conflict. Data were gathered via an online survey of 2,191 employees from 37 Australian universities. Multilevel modelling showed that university level PSC to demands, y=−0.09, SE=0.03, p<0.01, and demands to work-life conflict, y=0.51, SE=0.19, p<0.05, relationships were significant. Supporting the antecedent theory, university level PSC was significantly indirectly related to work-life conflict via demands (LL −0.10 UL −0.01). Against expectations PSC did not moderate the demand to work-life conflict relationship. The results imply that targeting PSC could help prevent work from home digital job demands, and therefore, work-life conflict. Further research is needed on the role of digital job resources as flexible and hybrid work takes hold post COVID.

ムチンは高度にOグリコシル化された糖タンパク質で、細胞外からの作用物質に対する細胞の保護に関与していると考えられている。ムチンは、分泌型ムチンと膜結合型ムチンの二種類が知られている。ほとんどのムチンは、分子の中央に縦列反復配列 (tandem repeat) 構造の領域を持つが、この部位はセリンとスレオニンに富み、ムチンの種類により長さが大きく異なっている。多くのムチンにはシステインに富むドメインもある。反復配列は、ひとつのムチン分子中では、ヒトMUC1タンパク質分子のように、多くの場合保存されている。しかし二種間では、例えば、マウスのMUC1タンパク質とヒトMUC1タンパク質の反復配列のように、ほとんど保存されていない。ムチンの多くは反復配列の数に違いがあるために多型であり、ムチン遺伝子の転写産物は多くの場合不均一である。ムチンは組織特異的に発現しているものが多いが、MUC1やMUC2のようにいくつもの組織でみられるものもある。一つの組織が一つ以上のムチンを発現している可能性もある。これまでに得られた範囲の研究からも、ムチンの発現制御は複雑であることがわかる。膜結合型ムチンは細胞間相互作用を調節することにより発生や腫瘍の進行に関与しているのではないかと考えられている。ある種のムチンのシステインに富むドメインは、細胞増殖の制御に役割を果たしている可能性もある。組み換えDNAプローブを用いた研究が、このムチンという複雑な分子に対する理解を大いに深めることは疑いない。

Balaenopterid whale specimens preserved in several institutions totaling 19 were examined. Specimens identified to species level were 14, i.e. 3 Balaenoptera musculus, 6 B. edeni, and 5 B. omurai. The remaining 5 specimens were not identified. The existence of B. omurai from Myanmar waters was confirmed based on the morphological characters of the skull and the first rib. This article is the first confirmation of this species in Myanmar. Among the two already “confirmed” species, B. musculus was identified by Smith et al. (1997) based on the actual specimen in the Natural History Museum, however for B. edeni, the specimens we examined were not observed for species identification and no preceding work reported the existence of B. edeni, except for the type specimen collected in Mon state in 1871 and now preserved in the Indian Museum, Kolkata (Anderson, 1879).

This study focuses on the Chinese-Lenin School (also the acronym CLS) and how the Soviet state used the CLS and other tertiary institutions in the Russian Far East to recruit East Asians into Soviet intelligence during the 1920s to the end of 1945. Typically, the Chinese and Korean intelligence agents of the USSR are presented with very few details with very little information on their lives, motivations and beliefs. This article will attempt to bridge some of this “blank spot” and will cover the biographies of several East Asians in the Soviet intelligence services, their raison d’etre, their world view(s) and motivations. The basis for this new study is fieldwork, interviews and photographs collected and conducted in Central Asia with the surviving relatives of six East Asian former Soviet intelligence officers. The book, Chinese Diaspora in Vladivostok, Second Edition [Kitaiskaia diaspora vo Vladivostoke, 2-е izdanie] which was written in Russian by two local historians from the Russian Far East also plays a major role in this study’s depth, revelations and conclusions.

Cerebral amyloid β (Aβ) deposition is a pathological hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). There are several molecular species of Aβ, including Aβ40, Aβ42, and Aβ43, and the pathological roles of Aβ43 have attracted particular attention in recent years. Aβ43 is mainly deposited as senile plaques (SPs) in AD brains, and is known to be more amyloidogenic and neurotoxic than Aβ42 and Aβ40. Aβ40 and Aβ42 deposition have been demonstrated in several animal species, while Aβ43 deposition has not been studied in animals. The brains of sea lions, dogs, and cats exhibit unique age-related Aβ pathologies. In the present study, the deposition patterns of Aβ40, Aβ42, and Aβ43 were examined immunohistochemically in the brains of aged dogs (n=52), sea lions (n=5), and cats (n=17). In dogs, most cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) lesions and primitive SPs were positive for Aβ42, Aβ43, and Aβ40. However, diffuse SPs and capillary CAA lesions were negative for Aβ40. In sea lions, all SPs and most CAA lesions were positive for Aβ42, Aβ43, and Aβ40, while capillary CAA lesions were negative for Aβ40. In cats, Aβ42-immunopositive granular aggregates and arteriole and capillary CAA lesions were positive for Aβ43, but negative for Aβ40. Double-labelling immunohistochemistry revealed the co-localization of Aβ42 and Aβ43. These findings suggest that Aβ43 and Aβ42 are frequently deposited in the brains of Carnivora animals and may play an important role in Aβ pathology.
