Yoyo is a simple toy but it has complicated dynamical characteristics. This paper describes a model of the yoyo suitable for feedback control and a visual feedback control scheme based on this model. The validity of the model and the control scheme is evaluated by the simulations and the experiments on PUMA 560.

To help users select and understand people while searching for them, we present a method of assigning Nippon Decimal Classification (NDC), which is a system of library classification numbers, to people on the web. By assigning NDC numbers to people, we can assign not only labels to people but also build a NDC-based people-search directory. We use a relative index in NDC, which lists the related index terms attached to NDC. We count the number of relative index terms contained in the titles of web pages (HTML files) and assign the top five NDC9 numbers to people. We developed a prototype of a people-search directory by assigning NDC9 numbers to HTML files that were manually classified from web people-search results. We evaluated the usefulness of our approach by comparing four methods and six documents and found that our method (extracting relative index terms) from the titles of web pages outperformed other methods and documents.

Pedaling is a typical example of the problem of man-machine interaction. The design of machines and bicycles that makes full use of human capabilities is an old but still challenging engineering problem. This paper describles the optimal design of a bicycle from several viewpoints such as kinematics, statics, dynamics, and physiology. The efficacy of a new mechanism called “magic crank” that realizes an unconventional non-circular pedaling trajectory is also discussed.

In this paper, we propose a robust control scheme which achieves trajectory tracking with prescribed accuracy for robot manipulators with bounded unknown parameters. This scheme is based on Lyapunov stability theorem, and the Lyapunov function is constructed using the intertia matrix. Therefore, the control law takes a very simple form which does not include the inverse of the intertia matrix. Moreover, based on the assumption that the dynamic equation can be expressed as a sum of products of unobservable matrices which contain unknown parameters and observable state vectors, this scheme makes the best use of observable states. Due to this we can expect smaller control gains. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed control sheme is shown by numerical simulations and experimental results using a 2-degree-of-freedom manipulator.

Hybrid Dynamical Systems (HDS), which contain both discrete symbol and continuous signal, are attracting great attention in the field of system control. In this paper, a new symbol based control strategy for a line following control of a two wheeled vehicle is proposed. The vehicle is supposed to have a low-resolution sensor and actuator. The control requirement, however, is specified so as to keep the vehicle as close as possible to the center of the line. The controllability and observability issues are investigated, and a concrete control policy based on the continuous state estimation is proposed. Some experimental results are shown to demonstrate the usefulness of our idea.

Since unexpected machine failures are huge losses for users, maintenance activities are essential. If the failures can be predicted in advance using a supervised learning, the machines can be maintained before they break down and some failures can be prevented. However, although a large number of failure data are required to predict failures using a supervised learning, failures rarely occur in the actual field. In this study, we propose to detect the failure of a hydraulic excavator using an autoencoder, which is an unsupervised learning. By using the autoencoder to model normal state data, the failure can be predicted in advance. This paper shows the results of evaluating failure predictions using the LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory) autoencoder model for actual failure of hydraulic excavators.

A ceramic kiln is a two-input/two-output system where temperature and atmosphere (hydrogen or carbon monoxide) inner it are controlled by fuel and a damper. The ceramic kiln has a huge heat capacity and is a nonlinear system because the combustion characteristics in the kiln is always changing due to interference of temperature and atmosphere. Experts, therefore, have been controlling it based on their experimental knowledge.In this paper, we try to control the ceramic kiln by fuzzy control. First, we make a kiln model based on the combustion theory. Next, we choose membership functions of the fuzzy controller while simulating the fuzzy control of the ceramic kiln using the kiln model and fuzzy production rules given by experts. Finally, we make experiments on the fuzzy control for a real ceramic kiln in Shigaraki, Shiga Prefecture, and show some experiment results.

This paper deals with path-following control. In existing path-following methods, velocity of e.g. vehicles has been often given as reference inputs. However, velocity is tied in with other tracking characteristics and there exist trade-offs between velocity, tracking errors, control costs and so on. To deal with the trade-offs explicitly, we first formulate a cost function based on difference between a reference path and trajectories of vehicle motion. The difference is modeled in terms of dynamics of curvature. This formulation enables us to deal with trade-offs among tracking error, reaching time and control costs. The control input can be given by solving a two point boundary problem numerically. The effectiveness of the proposed method is examined by numerical examples.

In previous studies of human information processing, the visual separate system and the auditory separate system have been frequently studied. However, human related characteristic between visual and auditory systems has not been investigated substantially. If the mechanisms of human visual and auditory parallel information processing are elucidated, the finding will contribute to improving technical systems. In our previous studies, human related characteristic between visual search and speech perception is studied. The results showed the mutual effect between visual information processing and auditory information processing in the visual and the auditory parallel information processing. However, to clarify the cause of many car accidents lies in the use of car-phone on driving, it is necessary to use the same kind of visual and auditory stimuli in psychological experiments. In this paper, characteristic of reaction time in parallel information processing of human visual and auditory system is measured by using the same kind of stimuli. The experimental results show the factors that influence the visual and the auditory reaction time are the difficulty of the visual and the auditory stimuli and the timing of the visual and the auditory inputs. The experimental results also suggest that one of the causes of car accidents (to use car-phone while driving) is that the human visual information processing is affected by the auditory information.

This paper provides a game theoretical framework to analyze speech acts in rules-based communication places such as Parliamentary debates and Bibliobattle. The game consists of two stages:(1) the first stage of deliberation, and (2) the second stage of resolution. In the first stage, players discuss a common topic from various viewpoints, and in the second stage all the participants decide which opinion is plausible following a social choice rule as voting. The theory to examine the game involves dynamic epistemic logic (so-called dynamic game logic), and then enables us to focus on players' epistemic states through speech acts. Furthermore, it is connected to a part of mechanism design in the second stage, and secures players' incentives compatibility in social decisions. As a result, it captures how the rules work and what kind of speeches in speech places are derived through players' strategic thinking with rationality.

This paper proposes a remote control method for a linear system with pointwise-in-time state and/or control constraints. Our technique guarantees achievement of tracking performance and constraint fulfillment under simultaneous occurrence of some phenomena over communication links, such as arbitrary and unforeseeable delays and lots of packet losses. Our ideas are to feedback information about not a state but a state-existing area and to share maximal output admissible sets with reference governor and switching control strategy that consist of the proposed technique. Through numerical and experimental examples, we demonstrate effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper deals with assigning N operations on parallel H machines. The earliest start time, the latest finish time and the processing time are defined for each operation. The problem is to minimize the deviation of each processing time from the desirable time interval. We propose two autonomous decentralized scheduling algorithms to solve this problem. In these algorithms, an operation is transferred from one machine to another machine on the basis of information exchanges and cooperation among subsystems. By examining numerical results, a comparison is made between two algorithms from the viewpoints of accuracy and computation time. Consequently, abetter algorithm is found to be the one based on negotiations of one subsystem with the others.

This paper constructs a control system in which one highly mobile agent navigates autonomous multiple agents escaping from the agent according to nonlinear interaction. This study is motivated by the sheepdog system: a flock of thousands of sheep are controlled by only a few sheepdogs. Inspired by the sheepdog system, we have proposed a control law of a sheepdog to solve the problem of one sheep converging on a circular trajectory around a goal by one sheepdog, which is called the mobile control. In this paper, we extend this controller to applicable to a flock of sheep by treating multiple sheep as “a disc with a certain flock radius”. This paper deals with the problem of navigating a flock of sheep to converge their centers of gravity on a circular trajectory around a goal position. For this problem, we propose a flock model of sheep and an extended mobile control designed by considering the suitable distance between a sheepdog and a center of the flock. Finally, we verified the validity of the proposed method through numerical simulation and robot demonstrations.

This paper proposes an error estimation of a numerical method for solving Hamilton-Jacobi equations of nonlinear optimal control problems, called stable manifold method. Then, a rapid numerical algorithm is derived from the estimation. In the algorithm, the convergent sequence with respect to solutions on stable manifolds that are equivalent to the pair of optimal feedback gains and trajectories is improved. The new algorithm has three advantages, rapid calculation, extended radius of convergence and low memory consumption.

In this paper, we propose a spacial music score. Although many number of studies have been made on multimedia technology in the musical field over the past few decades, there is little attention to notation. The purpose of this paper is to construct more flexible and easily understandable visual music score for the music which is needed to be complicatedly controlled. The prototype system is developed for evalution, and it is confirmed that the user can make music easily by using the system.
