At the first step, I studied the driver model in the drift cornering. At the second step, I studied the technique by which the performance of running in the vehicle at the drift cornering was improved. I have understood the driver is steered by feed back the body slip angle and the body slip angle velocity at the drift cornering. Moreover, I have understood importance in the vehicle movement performance improvement the cornering force characteristic where the maximum cornering force of the tire was exceeded.

This study investigates the atomization mechanism of fuel spray dissolved in noncondensable gas, such as N2, CO2. The fuel spray was injected at room temperature and in an atmospheric pressure field through a diesel-hole-type nozzle. In this paper, N2 gas was dissolved into diesel fuel, n-tridecane, under several pressurized conditions using a gas bubbling method in a constant volume vessel. This fuel, with high gas solubility, was injected under several injection pressures using an accumulated injection system designed by the authors. It was found that the dissolved gas separated into gas bubbles like gas cavitation phenomena under the atmospheric field. The change in spray patterns caused by the gas solubility is discussed using photographs of the patterns.

The Cartesian grid-based CFD is very easy to generate a grid and can be easily applied to the analysis of complex geometries. These requirements are essential for CFD to become a general-purpose tool that can be used by beginners, and the Cartesian grid-based CFD is one of the most promising candidates. On the other hand, it is recognized that the Cartesian grid method still has some problems in reproducing object shapes and handling solid wall boundaries compared to CFD with boundary-fitted grids because the cell interfaces do not fit to the object surface. In this paper, we introduce the “Workshop on Cartesian Grid-based CFD” held at the Fluid Dynamics Conference / Aerospace Numerical Simulation Symposium (held at the end of June or the beginning of July every year). In this workshop, we set up benchmark problems to solve the aforementioned problems, and asked participants to bring the results to the workshop for discussion to improve Cartesian grid-based CFD. We introduce the results of the last workshop and would like to invite new participants to the workshop.

In this paper, basic principle of active driving mechanism for omnidirectional wheel mechanism with a dual-rings is proposed. Active driving mechanism is composed of one outer helical gear and two dual-rings with internal helical gear. Proposed active driving mechanism is confirmed by developing basic prototype model.

An optimization method for fin pitch in naturally cooled heat sinks is described. Because the heat sinks for the power units of electric trains are stacked vertically, lower heat sinks heat upper heat sinks. However the fin pitch of conventional heat sinks is optimized as single heat sink without accounting for the influence of the lower heat sinks. Equations to predict heat dissipation and a rise in exhaust air temperature in the heat sinks, along with an optimization method for the fin pitch are presented. These equations were carried out from a developed profile of velocity and temperature between two plates. A valid range of the Rayleigh number for the equations is shown, and the optimizing process for the fin pitch of stacked heat sinks is described. The experimental results of the rise in fin temperature of triple stacked heat sinks are compared with the calculated results. The heat sink with optimized arrangement of fins shows over 10% improvement in performance compared with the conventional heat sink.

Finite difference method in a collocated grid system has the merits of both regular and staggered grid systems, and has mainly been used for steady flow simulations. Recently, some unsteady flows have been simulated by using the collocated grid system. The author pointed out a violation of kinetic energy conservation in the collocated grid system, which is important to unsteady turbulent flow simulations. In this paper, a modified algorithm for improving the conservation property of the collcated grid system is proposed. Van Kan type pressure correction is introduced to minimize the defect. The modified algorithm with fourth order accuracy in space is also proposed. Conservation properties of the numerical algorithms in the collocated grid system are demonstrated on the example of two dimensional periodic inviscid flow simulations. Plane turbulent channel flow simulations are also performed to confirm the reliavility of the modified algorithm.

Cymbals are percussion instruments that vibrate and radiate sounds when hit with a stick. A bell is the raised section in the middle of the cymbal and its size produces different sounds. In this study, we investigate the effect of bell size on the sound characteristics of cymbals. The radiated sounds and vibrations for cymbals with two different bell sizes are measured. In addition, the natural frequency and mode shape are obtained by finite element analysis and the sound radiation efficiency is calculated for each mode. The measured results indicate that the sound frequency characteristics for the large bell show three peaks with large sound pressure within the range of 1000 to 3000 Hz and the sound pressure for the small bell is larger than that for the large bell within the range of 4000 to 5000 Hz. The vibration frequency characteristics show there is no remarkable difference between the large and small bells. The sound radiation efficiencies indicate that the large bell has many modes with high radiation efficiency within the range of 1000 to 3000 Hz and their modes have a small number of nodal diameters and a large deformation at the bell. The small bell has many modes with high efficiency within the range of 4000 to 5000 Hz. This is reason for the difference in sound characteristics between the large and small bells.

Cymbals are percussion instruments that vibrate and radiate sounds when hit with a stick or when used in pairs. The sound radiated from a cymbal depends on its vibration characteristics. Cymbals are made through spin forming, hammering and lathing processes. The spin forming creates the domed shape of cymbals, determining the basic vibration characteristics. The hammering and lathing make specific sound quality adjustments by changing the vibration characteristics. In this paper, we focus on how the hammering affects the cymbal's vibration characteristics. The hammering produces many shallow dents over the cymbal's surface, generating residual stresses in it. These residual stresses change the vibration characteristics. We perform finite element analysis of the hammered cymbal to obtain its vibration characteristics. In the analysis, we use thermal stress analysis to reproduce the stress distribution and then with this stress distribution we perform vibration analysis. The results show that the effects of thermal load (i.e., hammering) vary depending on the mode: an increase or decrease in the natural frequency. As a result, the peak frequencies and their peak values in the frequency response function change.

In order to realize universal 8-legged walking of just as creatural spiders and adapt to environments, this paper is concerned with cooperative walking control for a spider-type robot. At first, we examine how a spider walks on the floor to ascertain its gait. Second, a spider-type robot which is possible to walk by 8-legs is made experimentally. And using our trial robot, we perform walking experiments to check whether various walking types are possible. The walking types are forward, beck, diagonal, revolution and R-advance. Next, we observe whether a spider reacts well to the environment and then how a spider walks. A creatural spider responds to environmental information by adapting various walking forms, in cases of escaping from natural enemies or fear, wandering around for hunting game and so on. Finally, the mechanisms of these walking forms are examined and verified through simulation experiment. And, we discuss 8-legged cooperative control. The experiment uses various information such as fatigue, fear and distance. Moreover, fuzzy theory is used for controlling the walking velocity by expressing obscure environmental information.

This study aims to examine the benefit of visual fatigue evaluation based on prefrontal cortex (PFC) measurement by near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), and to evaluate fatigue on various colored LED backlit text. In our method, eight adult participants read a LED backlit text 10 minutes in a dark room. Before and after task, subjective fatigue questionnaire “Jikaku-sho shirabe”, subjective visual fatigue questionnaire (SVF), and the critical flicker-fusion frequency (CFF) were measured. The time-course of oxy-Hb in the PFC was measured using a 22-channel NIRS. Heart rate variability (HRV) was measured to access an autonomic nervous system balance. Six types of white LEDs were used for backlighting: general white as a control (W), high color-rendering white (WH), bluish white (WB), reddish white (WR), greenish white (WG), and yellowish white (WY). In our results, correlation analysis suggested that the development of central fatigue is related to deactivated condition in the mPFC, and the development of subjective visual fatigue is related to deactivated condition in the LPFC. In comparison between LED treatments, in WH condition, high subjective central fatigue, CFF decay and LF/HF were revealed, and the PFC inactivated. In WG condition, low subjective central fatigue and CFF decay revealed. Our findings suggested that participants get tired on high color-rendering white LED backlit text, and were less tired in greenish white LED backlit text. Also, NIRS provides benefits in the evaluation of visual fatigue.

When a robot is used for doing work such as laser processing or water-jet processing, not only the trajectory of the end-effector but also its velocity is very important from the viewpoint of the processing accuracy. On the other hand, several curve-interpolation methods have been suggested, but it is cannot be said with certainty that the correct velocity control of the trajectory is possible. In this study, in order to solve this problem, a method using the clothoidal curve is introduced, and this method enables the velocity control with high accuracy for any trajectory.

The objective of this paper is to establish a concise structural model of the human musculoskeletal (HMS) system to be used for an exercise therapy of a malfunction or a distortion called Somatic Balance Restoring Treatment (SRBT). This model must be comprehensive for therapists while maintaining a theoretical thoroughness in mechanics. For this objective, a system approach called Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) has been applied to bridge multi-body dynamics and clinical observations. From a mechanical viewpoint, the HMS system can be treated as a collection of joint connected 15 rigid bodies in a topological tree. From a clinical viewpoint, joints are of major concern since most malfunctions take place at the joints. Based on clinical observation data accumulated for 36 years, we have discovered that all HMS motions can be constructed by a combination of 80 fundamental motion elements and that all motions are interacted with each other. By applying the ISM for the HMS system, we have obtained that an active motion element with intention induces associated motion element(s). In addition, the ISM yields a tiered structure of the fundamental motion elements according to the degree of activeness; and most importantly, an overall investigation of the matrix characteristics has revealed a fundamental structure of the SBRT.

In this investigation, curving performance for low-floor light rail vehicles (LRV) with friction controls on wheel/rail interface is discussed. To this end, a creep force model subjected to friction modifiers is developed by introducing an equivalent shear modulus of rigidity. Good agreements in the creep force characteristics are obtained between the proposed model and experiment. It is shown with the proposed creep force model that use of friction modifiers on an inner rail is effective for reducing lateral contact forces of LRV with independently rotating wheels.

Fibrils were isolated from rat tail tendons and tensile tests of the fibrils were performed in the air (dry) condition or in the physiological saline solution (wet) condition. After the fibrils were immersed in the physiological saline solution for 3 and 30 minutes, the fibrils were stretched to failure. There were no significant differences in the tensile properties between 3 and 30 minutes. These results indicate that the fibrils were sufficiently hydrated by the immersion of 3 minutes. The fibrils immersed for 3 minutes showed the tensile strength of 111±31 MPa (Mean±S.E.), strain at failure of 32.1±4.5 %, and tangent modulus of 350±53 MPa. Next, the fibrils were stretched to failure in the air. The dry fibrils showed the tensile strength of 702±137 MPa, strain at failure of 30.4±8.5 %, and tangent modulus of 2720±840 MPa. The tensile strength and tangent modulus of the dry fibrils were significantly larger than those of the wet fibrils. There were no significant differences in the strain at failure between the dry and wet fibrils. These results point to the great importance of water for the tensile properties of collagen fibrils.

In recent years, the number of elderly people living alone has a tendency to increase due to the advancement of an aging society. Therefore, monitoring and support systems are necessary. In this paper, we developed the therapy robot having monitoring and support function under the consideration to make it not to be a surveillance system. And we evaluated whether it is a suitable size and weight for elderly people. As a result, the answer that size and weight are just right accounted for the majority.

Obesity has become a serious problem worldwide in the modern society with the change of food culture. Obesity would be a cause of many diseases such as hypertension, dyslipidemia and diabetes. Considering obesity, we examined satiety closely related to energy intake. In this study, we focused on the number of chews and chewing frequency, which are factors of satiety, and analyzed the influence on it. In the experiment, we compared satiety, hunger and masticatory muscle activity among the conditions when participants ate the same amount of food under the condition that the number of chews and the chewing frequency were changed. As a result, the datas of the increase rate of satiety and the masticatory muscle activity showed that participants of low weight and normal weight who consumed foods by chewing many times, and participants of obesity who consumed foods with large masticatory muscle activity for each chew could feel fullness earlier. Using this result, people can reduce the energy intake naturally by feeling fullness early in the diet, and it is expected to improve the eating habits of obese people.
