Life style related diseases such as hypertension and diabetes promote arteriosclerosis which causes circulatory diseases. It is important to evaluate arterial condition for prevention of circulatory diseases. The pulse wave velocity method has become familiar as a vascular test because it is easy and non-invasively. However, the accuracy of the method seems not to be high because it just compares two points ignoring the frequency dependence and reflection waves from peripheral vessels. In this study theory of pulse wave propagation considering such effects was formulated. A new method to identify the reflection ratio from peripheral vessels and pulse wave velocity was proposed. This method was verified by experiment using a silicon tube and applied to measure the pulse wave propagation of human arm as a case study. The results showed that this method has possibility to apply to measure the pulse wave propagation of human pulse wave.

A “Vapor Chamber” is used as a novel heat spreader to cool high-performance MPUs (micro-processor units). The vapor chamber is placed between small heat sources and a large heat sink. This paper describes the effect of heat source size on the heat transfer characteristics of the vapor chamber. First, by the experiments, the effect of heat source size on the temperature distribution of the vapor chamber is investigated, and the validity of the mathematical model of the vapor chamber is confirmed. Secondly, by the numerical analyses, the effect of heat source size on the thermal resistances inside the vapor chamber is discussed. It is found that the heat source size greatly affects the thermal resistance of the evaporator section inside the vapor chamber. Although the thermal resistance is hardly affected by the heat generation rate and the heat flux of the heat source, it increases as the heat source becomes smaller.

To shorten the stopping distance of the high-speed trains in case of emergency such as a huge earthquake, the author developed the small-size and light-weight aerodynamic braking device. The device increases an aerodynamic drag force of a train to achieve a high deceleration at the range of over 350 km/h without a friction between rail and wheel. The device is as miniaturized as possible in order to be installed flexibly on the train, whereby many devices with small-size drag panels are appropriately arranged throughout the train roof to obtain higher drag force. A pair of drag panels rotating around a horizontal axis which are connected by the gear can be actuated by the traveling wind without a large-size actuator. The full-scale prototype aerodynamic braking device is designed and manufactured. To examine its aerodynamic characteristics, one or two prototypes are tested on a wind tunnel facility at a maximum flow speed of 400 km/h (111 m/s). It was proven that the response time of motion from the folding position to the braking position took only 0.39 s, and the device could produce the aerodynamic drag of 2.3 kN per one unit at 400 km/h. Detached-eddy simulation (DES) is used to study the flow around a train roof with a large number of devices. The rate of change of the drag coefficient for devices with the staggered arrangement which aims to improve a total drag force of a train is compared against the standard parallel arrangement at U = 360 km/h. The staggered arrangement could increase the total drag coefficients 10.3 percent as compared to the standard parallel arrangement.

The purpose of this study is elucidating the mechanism of mosquito's flight. The motion of mosquito's wings consists of three representative motion; flapping, lead-lug and feathering motion. The feathering motion is a rotational movement which is centering on a wing leading edge. The mosquitoes are performing this motion passively produced by fluid forces and so on. In order to build the enlarged model which simulates this motion, we need to measure the stiffness of the mosquito's wings. The bending stiffness of the mosquito's wings were measured by the experiment using a cantilever. The enlarged wing model was designed based on its results. We observed the flapping motion of the enlarged wing model in the very low velocity wind tunnel and verified whether the feathering motion can be simulated.

This paper presents a study on effects of rim and web thicknesses on root stresses of thin-rimmed helical gears. Root stresses of thin-rimmed helical gears with symmetric web arrangement of various rim and web thicknesses, which were meshed with the solid helical gear, were measured from the beginning of engagement to the end of the engagement by the strain gauge method. The changes of the root stress from the beginning of engagement to the end of engagement were examined for the thin-rimmed helical gear with symmetric web arrangement. The meshing position (worst loading position), where the maximum root stress occurred, was determined for the thin-rimmed helical gear with symmetric web arrangement. The effects of rim and web thicknesses on the root stress, the maximum root stress and the position of the maximum root stress were clarified.

Optical novelty filter based on the two-wave mixing in a photorefractive BaTiO<SUB>3</SUB> crystal is applied to motion detection for the purpose of its application to the robot vision. A simple method is proposed to realize the reflex vision system that a human being possesses. Our method uses a photo detector array to detect the output from the optical novelty filter and the detector element that obtains the highest signal is selected. By simulations using a simple animations, it is showed that the larger or the faster object can be detected in higher probability. Tracking a moving object is demonstrated with a 2&times;2 photo-transistor array and the selective circuit including the exclusive gate circuit.

伸びの異なる2種類の金属繊維を用いて,エポキシ樹脂を強化した複合材料を試作し,その常温クリープ挙動を調べた.その結果,伸びの小さいタングステン繊維を含む複合材料は,みかけ上遷移,定常,加速クリープを示し,繊維,母材ともに破断したが,体積率の小さな試験片ではタングステン繊維にマルチプルネッキングが生じた.一方,伸び大きいステンレス繊維を含む複合材料は,対数クリープだけを示し,この傾向は高体積率,低応力になるほど著しく,また,クリープ破断は母材だけでおこり,繊維は母材から引き抜けた.

In recent years, the demand for orthodontic treatment has been increasing, but the change in the moment due to the movement of the teeth during orthodontic treatment has not been measured and has not been quantitatively evaluated. The purpose of this study is to develop a three-tooth device with a built-in 6-axis force sensor and to evaluate orthodontic treatment quantitatively. We have developed a device that can change the angle of the central tooth using a stepping motor to reproduce the movement of the teeth during orthodontic treatment. We verified whether wires needed to be reattached during orthodontic treatment using this device. As a result, it turned out that a larger moment can be applied to the teeth by reattaching the wire during orthodontic treatment

Being capable of highly accurate measurement, P.D. flowmeters have been used conventionally in such applications as custody transfer and meter proving. For more accurate measurements, servo P.D. flowmeters, in which the serve motor drives the rotors so that the pressure difference across the rotors are appropriately controlled, have taken over ordinary P.D. flowmeters. Further requirements on these meters are, however, becoming tough year after year. Demands on high precision measurement of multiple liquid types with different properties, wider range-ability, and higher response are recently required.

A positive displacement (PD) flowmeters has been used for long years as it can measure volumetric flow directly. Since features of PD's are most exerted in oil related flow measurements, in present society which environmental issues are emphasized, they are required for high accuracy fuel consumption measurements in transport equipment industry such as automotive industry, as well as assuming an important role in cross-border transactions. Also, in recent years, development of secondary standards for JCSS registration is an urgent need; verification of our Screw PD Flowmeter is made, corresponding to such necessity.

This paper presents a new and effective assembly model by using a fixture with passive RCC function. Previously, in a peg-in-hole task, such functions for skillful assembly as RCC, contact force sensing and so on have been supplied to a "peg-device" like a hand-manipulator, not a "hole-device" like a fixture. Therefore the characteristics of a fixture with passive RCC function in this task is investigated in this paper. The peg-in-hole task model by using the "RCC fixture" is constructed on vertical (x-z) plane. And the performance of this task is investigated by the quasi-static analysis, which was proposed by Whitney, to evaluate the characteristics of it. From the results of the analysis, it has been made clear that the RCC fixture has shown the insertion behavior unlike conventional RCC applied to a peg near the entrance of hole.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of closed basket weave ankle taping on the vertical ground reaction force and ankle movement during the contact phase before the take-off in vertical jump performance. Twelve healthy young men performed a vertical jump performance on a force plate without (CON) or with ankle taping (closed basket weave technique: CBW) of the right ankle joint. Vertical jump ability was assessed using two styles of vertical jump with no arm swing: a countermovement jump (CMJ) and squat jump (SJ). From the vertical ground reaction force (GRF), maximum jump height (Ht), vertical impulse (VI), rate of force development (RFD), maximum GRF (GRFmax) during the contact phase before the take-off in jump performance were determined. Also, movement analysis, range of motion (Δ ank) and angular velocity (Vank) of ankle joint were caliculated . Ht and RFD, Δ ank, Vank were significantly lower for CBW than CON in CMJ, but not in SJ. Conversely, VI and GRFmax were not significantly different between the groups in either jump condition. These results suggest that ankle taping impairs countermovement jump performance, due to a decreased ability to rapidly develop large force and plantar-flexion motion on the ground before the take-off.

<p>This paper describes the development of a prototype of a test field for accessing the primary containment vessel (PCV) in the reactor building of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Stations (FDNPS). A possible access route to the inside of PCV includes CRD (Control Rod Drive) rail part for maintenance and exchange of CRD. In the practical tasks at reactor building Unit 2, remotely operated robots passed thorough there for the tasks. We designed test field that is a simplified CRD rail part with insertion section for the robot and constructed a prototype. In this paper, we described the design and the characteristics of developed prototype in detail.</p>

The Plesiosauria are a group of aquatic reptiles lived from the Late Triassic to the latest Cretaceous. Their four limbs were modified into flippers, and there are no significant differences in the size and shape of fore and hind limbs. Due to this unique body structure, it has been assumed that plesiosaurs may have performed a unique swimming style. However, the adaptive locomotor patterns of plesiosaurs is still unclear. To reveal their locomotion, we introduce a perspective of control principle underlying adaptive animals’ behaviors. This is because producing adaptive behaviors that respond to surrounding environments and morphology could be indispensable for animals of any era to survive. In this approach, we develop extinct-animal-like robots and establish a control mechanism which can create physically rational locomotor patterns for unique morphologies of extinct animals through robot experiments. In this paper, we have constructed a platform as the first step to investigate coordination mechanism between flippers in plesiosaur locomotion.

Although how to perform tasks at disaster sites has been actively discussed, there is little debate on important issues such as how to deliver robots to disaster sites. We propose to drop a humanoid robot with a parachute from an airplane as one of the methods of delivering robots. In this research, we aim to establish a method to absorb the shock at the time of landing by whole body motion for preventing the damage to the robot. As an early stage of this research, drop tests using a small one-legged robot were conducted. From the viewpoint obtained by these experiments, we designed a parachute landing motion for the small robot heuristically and succeeded in reducing the impact force to 40%.
