Regarding the penetrating distance of fuel spray of Diesel engine, the old theory dealing with the motion of a fuel droplet in still air is recognized not to coincide with the actual phenomenon because of extremely small size of atomized fuel droplets and very high density of gas in cylinder. In this paper, the characteristics of spray penetration are discussed from the viewpoint of momentum theory based on the idea that air induced into fuel jet stream makes a kind of mixed gas together with fuel droplets. As the results of a series of experiments, the following conclusions have been reached : (1) Theory of momentum for the spray penetration holds good, and effects of elements which control the penetrating distance can be expressed by relatively simple relations consisting of non-dimensional numbers. (2) The distance of spray penetration is proportional to square roots of each of nozzle orifice diameter, injection velocity and time after injection begins, and also is influenced by density of gas in cylinder, but the effect of viscosity of gas on the penetrating distance which remained uncertain is very little. (3) Excess air coefficient of spray mixture increases in proportion to penetrating distance, and the ratio between cylinder bore and such a penetrating distance that excess air coefficient becomes one (1) gives a base of similarity of fuel spray distribution in cylinder. In the design, accordingly, nozzle orifice diameter may be determined only in proportion to cylinder bore.

We have already developed a speech-driven embodied entrainment CG character system called “InterActor” which generates communicative motions and actions such as nods for entrained interaction from speech rhythm based on only voice input. Conventional InterActor performed the entrained communicative body movements and actions based on speech input without a voice back-channel. In this study, we develop an embodied character system with the voice backchannel based on the embodied interaction model. Two experiments are performed to confirm the effectiveness of the system by sensory evaluation. In the first experiment, the effects of the automatic generation and presentation method of the voice back-channel are examined in each situation with and without character presentation. In the second experiment, the frequency of the voice back-channel to nodding motion is examined. The effectiveness of the system is confirmed from these experimental results.

This paper presents the development and preliminary experiments of dynamic buoyancy adjusting device with an assist spring. The proposed buoyancy adjusting device is actuated by an electric motor with a passive spring that provides some assistance to the motor. The device can achieve better energy efficiency and higher speed for dynamic control because the assist spring support actuator torque and allows low gear. In this paper, we have designed and developed a dynamic buoyancy adjusting device as a prototype. We have tested the performance of the developed device in a water tank with a depth of 1 meter.

This paper describes a method of giving impression words for images based on colors. 160 impression words are prepared, and colors which are strongly related to each of the 160 impression words are registered into the system in advance. In this system, we adopt Lab color space which is a color coordinate system and can obtain exact color difference between pixels and extract main colors of images based on the results of clustering in Lab color space. The number of main colors of an image is determined when the sum of pixels of the main colors is larger than 85% of all the pixels in the image, and the colors with the larger number of pixels are determined in ascending order. We propose a distance between the main colors and the registered colors. In this system mCn combinations of distances between m colors registered in an impression words and n main colors are obtained. Using the mCn distances, we calculate a minimum distance and an average distance every 160 impression words. By the comparison of the minimum distance and the average distance of each impression word, the system determines suitable impression words for the image. Experimental results show the proposed method to be effective.

The Japanese sword is a weapon peculiar to Japan. The Japanese sword is interesting not only from the viewpoint of traditional crafts of arts, but also from the aspect of modern science and technology because the way of making and its functionality as a weapon are really consistent with science. The present study is concerned with the connection between <i>tohshin</i> (blade) and <i>tsuka</i> (hilt) of the sword. Only one <i>mekugi-take</i> (retaining peg made of bamboo) with about 5mm in diameter holds <i>Nakago</i> (tang) in the hilt. However the slender <i>mekugi</i> might not be broken, even though in the case of violent sword-fighting. This fact has been historically demonstrated in many battles by Japanese swords. In this study, using a <i>Tachi</i> being the typical Japanese sword, it is examined theoretically and experimentally from the viewpoint of impact engineering why a <i>mekugi</i> used in Japanese swords might not be broken. As a result, it is made clear that such a strong force as breaking <i>mekugi-take</i> does not act on it, because of the location of <i>mekugi-ana</i> (a hole for <i>mekugi</i>) in the tang, which has been made by the traditional code of sword-smiths.

FAB (Fast Atom Beam) manufacturing is able to make a high-aspect-ratio structure. The manufacturing precision of line-and-space does not significantly decrease in the case of FAB manufacturing, when the distance between the mask and the substrate is of a limited length. In the present paper, a new method to make a line-and-space on the substrate by the use of FAB is first proposed. In this method, the mask with line-and-space is put on the substrate with slope. In the process of changing the slope of the mask, it is possible to change the line-and-space on the substrate. Next, the manufacturing process of the mask to make a nano-meter-order line-and-space on the substrate by the use to the FAB etching is proposed. Moreover, the mask is manufactured by the use of FAB and its performance during manufacturing is discussed.

It is generally known that the groove on tire tread can increase the friction force between the tire and the road surface under wet condition because of the improvement of drainage performance. Although wheel tread of actual railway rolling stocks have a wheel turning trace like the groove on tire tread, the characteristics of tangential contact force of the wheel/rail under wet condition is not clarified in detail. In this study, the tangential contact force measurement using a pair of small cylindrical specimens was carried out to investigate the relationship between the wheel turning trace and the friction force under wet condition. The experimental result shows the friction force under wet condition does not increase due to high iron’s stiffness if the wheel turning trace provided on the tread. On the other hand, it is also confirmed that the wheel turning trace has a reduction effect of the variation of the friction coefficient under wet condition. From the numerical analysis based on these experimental results, it is clarified that the longitudinal vibration of the vehicle can be decreased if the wheel has the wheel turning trace in case of the braking running under semi-wet condition.

In this study, we propose a steering control method for a cycling wheelchair. The commercially available cycling wheelchair is a pedal-driven system like a bicycle and the paraplegia and hemiplegia patients can move the wheelchair based on the pedaling force, if they can move their legs slightly by themselves. The user can also change the motion direction of the cycling wheelchair by using the steering handle. However, the right and left turnings are perceived differently while operating the steering handle and the steering operation is required a large torque because of the hardware problems of the cycling wheelchair. To overcome these problems, we propose a new hardware of the cycling wheelchair and its steering motion control method by using servo brakes. The proposed method is applied to the developed new cycling wheelchair and the experimental results illustrate the validity of the system.

By developing various electronic equipments with high performance, the dissipated power of electric chips used in those equipments has been increased. Therefore, it has been important to cool those electronic chips, and a liquid-cooling system has been employed for some electronic equipments. An Electro-Conjugate Fluid (ECF), which is one of functional fluids, has a remarkable property that a jet flow is generated between two electrodes when a high voltage is applied to the electrodes. By the use of this strong jet flow, a pump with simple structure, no noise and no vibration can be developed and a new liquid cooling system by ECF seems to be realized. In this study, to realize the liquid cooling system by ECF, an ECF-pump is proposed, in which four printed circuit boards are layered to make the pump size compact. The proposed pump is fabricated, and experiments are performed to investigate the basic characteristics of the pump. Furthermore, in the liquid cooling system with the proposed pump, experiments to cools a heat source are performed to investigate the possibility of achievement of the liquid cooling system by ECF.

<p>In this paper, we propose the method of tomato fruit and pedicel recognition method using 3D camera for tomato harvesting robot. Recognition method is constructed by 2 parts; tomato fruits detection and tomato pedicel detection. To avoid detecting stem and pedicel of neighbor fruit, we propose a robust estimation method in pedicel direction calculation. We evaluated the proposed method in the greenhouse with real tomato trees, experimental result shows its robustness.</p>

Currently, plasma gouging machines supplied by domestic equipment manufacturers are classified according to orifice gases used in them; some use mixtures of 30% hydrogen and argon, whereas some use only nitrogen. Stainless steel and aluminum alloy, which were previously used in arc welding, are used with a carbon steel for plasma gouging, thus resulting in high efficiency and high quality gouging. The plasma gouging process using only nitrogen allows carbon steel to be processed with a single gas, which is a potential selling point. However, plasma gouging or cutting using a mixture of gases is more expensive owing to the consumption of the two orifice gases. In order to use hydrogen, which is a combustible gas, special safety control is necessary in the storage of hydrogen gas cylinders. Compressed air can be easily used as an orifice gas; therefore, the author investigated various properties of the plasma gouging method using compressed air.

Today's project management of mechatronics development is difficult to manage, because mechatronics product is becoming highly complicated. This paper proposes an integrated model of the project information based on representation of mechatronics product and product development process. Based on this project model, this paper also addresses a management method of the project. The project model is represented as a process of design tasks and resources. The product model is represented as a design parameter, product function, and product structure. The dependencies between/inside the product and process are modeled as a MDM (Multiple Domain Matrix) matrix and DMM (Domain Mapping Matrix). The system finds and suggests the gap between designer's recognition and derived dependency. This suggestion can help the designer to elaborate and improve the project model. A proto-type system is implemented and applied to the design example of an electric solar boat. The result shows the elaboration process of the project information.

When a magnetic micro-screw moves in water, it is difficult to go up and to control a magnetic microscrew three-dimensionally because of gravity. Therefore, it is important to control density of a microscrew. Therefore, we have developed magnetically photo-curable (MPC) polymer with hollow microcapsules. This polymer enables us to fabricate a three-dimensional magnetic microstructure whose density is controlled. Since we can control density of this resin, buoyancy of microstructure is able to cancel the effect of gravity. To show neutral buoyancy of the magnetic microscrew, we compared vertical swimming velocity of the microscrew with horizontal velocity. This experimental result shows that vertical velocity coincides with horizontal velocity. This result demonstrates that we have succeeded in fabricating a magnetic microscrew and controlling the microscrew three-dimensionally in water.

An ionic conducting polymer gel film (ICPF) atuator is a composite of a perfluoro-sulfonic acid membrane sandwiched between platinum layers. Bending motion is induced by applying voltage between the surfaces in water or in wet conditions. This phenomenon was discovered in 1992. After reaching the maximum displacement toward the anode immediately, the actuator bent back to the cathode side, and approached the initial position gradually when a step voltage was applied. Current through the actuator decreased exponentially. The maximum displacement was proportional to the magnitude of the step voltage. Motion induced by a step current was almost the same as that induced by a step voltage but was slower. Voltage induced by the current increased gradually and reached a certain value, then increased once more to a steady voltage. The motion did not depend on the direction on the surface. The bending occured in all directions. Larger displacement was observed near the electrode. Dynamics of the actuator was expressed in terms of a 4th-degree transfer function by black-box linear modeling. Simulation results were in good agrrement with the experimental results.
