The radiation shielding effects on the gamma ray with the effective energy Ee = 661.7 keV and X-rays with that of Ee = 74 keV and 38 keV were examined by using the tungsten-mesh (W-Mesh) made of the tungsten wires of 18μm and 50μm, as candidate for radiation shielding materials having breathability and flexibility. The results showed that the radiation shield rate “η” of W-Mesh sample material represented by mass “Ma” per unit area was almost the same value as in that of the tungsten plate and the lead plate, excepted for the irradiation of gamma-ray at the range under Ma = 1 kg/m2. The value of η at the region of less than Ma = 0.3 kg/m2 also transited to the negative range on the gamma ray irradiation. Therefore, we found that use of W-mesh in the region of Ma = 0.3 kg/m2 or below should be avoided.

<p>Recently, traffic accidents due to the sudden change in the physical condition of the driver is attracting attention. In our previous study, we constructed a cardiovascular model capable of reproducing the mechanism of a cardiovascular system, and calculated biological signals by assuming sudden diseases in the model. In the cardiovascular model, stroke volume, the blood volume pumped by a heart per beat, is determined based on the operating conditions of the system considering the positions of baroreceptors and pressure sensors of a cardiac system in blood vessels. However, the simulated result did not well reproduce the measured pulse wave signal. In this study, we reexamined the treatment of bifurcation part of the blood vessel and successfully improved the accuracy of the simulation.</p>

<p>This paper deals with response behavior and rollover resistance of heavy duty truck in cornering. We focus on the connection type vehicle that consists of one tractor and one trailer. The vehicle is expressed by 7 nonlinear equations of motion and 2 constraint conditions of connecting point. The equations include the nonlinear property of the tire lateral force. We use the rate of decrease of wheel load as the index for judging rollover. We perform parameter study about the eccentric distance of center of gravity, the running speed and so on, and investigate the degree of the risk of rollover.</p>

FT-NIR spectroscopy has the potential to be an index for the degree of the formation of BICs using the changes in the hydrogen bonding or CH stretching vibration in terminal groups between the materials (reagents such as cellulose and cellobiose, botanical wastes from coffee beans and tealeaves) and various processing conditions of BICs. FT-NIR spectroscopy is a grate method for the BICs analysis because it is able to measure the vibrational spectra without destruction and pre-preparation for the spectroscopic measurement. The other reason why NIR is that this spectroscopy is hard to include noises from some contained materials in BICs. In the other hand, NIR spectra need the statistics analysis called “chemometrics” because these spectra show very broad and overlapped band. Changes of these overlapped bands are easier to interpret than MIR regions because MIR region has larger amount of information from many kinds of vibrations. Results of the chemometrics need the careful consideration for the changes between analytical results and intentionally perturbations because sometimes chemometrics results do not have the chemical meaning. Raman and THz spectroscopy are used to understand the actual chemical changes with perturbations by comparing with the results of statistical analysis.

<p>In this presentation, we propose an edible lens with a build-in aperture that can be eaten. The proposed lens is made of agar for transparent part and soft adzuki-bean jelly for an aperture to stop incident light. The aperture of a prototype worked properly to form image without an additional aperture. The prototype also showed a certain optical resolution of 5.56 LP/mm.</p>

I research and develop it aiming at the realization of a scooping goldfish robot copied from the method that a human being takes. This paper describes I estimate the 3D position of the goldfish in the water tank based on the information from a camera on a water tank to distinguish a timing to scoop a goldfish.

<p>Today changes are so frequent and extensive so that we cannot predict the future. To cope with this situation, we have to team up to solve the problems. But if we team up with 11 best players, the team will not be the best. The best team is realized when every member of a team can adaptably change his role. Such an adaptable team will be the final winner. But our engineering education has focused on how we can grow up best players and we did not pay too much attention to how we can make our team adaptable enough and how we can increase such adaptability of each player. We should make our efforts to grow such adaptable engineers.</p>

The effects of stress ratio, ratio of number of cycles and magnitude of applied stress on the fatigue strength of notched medium steel were studied under many-fold multiple rotating bending load in two stress levels. A few other investigators have reported that on the notched specimen the fatigue life is nearly equal to the calculated life by the linear damage law, i.e, Nth=n0/(nA/NA+na/Na). According to the test results the fatigue life on the notched specimen shows the same tendency to change with the stress ratio, the ratio of number of cycles and the magnitude of the applied stress as on the smooth specimen all over the stress range. But the value of N/Nth on the notched specimen seems to be larger than that on the smooth specimen. In the last part of this paper we state the way to modify the linear damage law with the stress correction factors which are the functions of stress ratio, the ratio of number of cycles and magnitude of applied stress. The method makes it possible to deduce the fatigue life under manyfold multiple load with the help of a few experimental data.

This study proposes a two-dimensional grid-free simulation method for gas-particle two-phase flow. The method is based on a vortex method, in which the vorticity field is discretized by vortex elements. The behavior of vortex element and the particle motion are simultaneously computed by the Lagrangian approach. Four square cells are allocated around each particle. In each cell, the change in the circulation of gas-phase due to the particle motion is calculated, and it is considered through the change in the strength of vortex element. The grid-free method is applied to simulate the particulate jet generated by small glass particles falling from a slit orifice into an unbounded quiescent air. It is shown that the simulated distribution of air velocity is favorably compared with the measurement. It is also confirmed that the entrained air flow rate agrees well with the prediction by an analytical model. These results suggest the validity of the method.

Ultrasonic enhancement of heat transfer on a narrow surface was measured by changing the width of the surface from 8 to 0.1 mm. Ultrasonic power of 600 W with a frequency of 40 kHz was used. Heat transfer on the narrow surface without ultrasonic vibration was correlated by means of the experimental equation for thin wire. The cavitation intensity was measured by means of the cavitation erosion loss of aluminum foil of 15μm thickness. The effects of acoustic streaming and cavitation were separated by this measurement. Heat transfer by acoustic streaming was predicted through the forced convection. Enhancement by cavitation was explained by the turbulence heat conductivity of the microjets.

The cavitation intensity and the heat transfer coefficient on the bottom surface of the object, by applying ultrasonic vibration, were measured experimentally. The object faced the ultrasonic generator adhered to the bottom of the water tank. The dimensions of the object were greater than the ultrasonic wavelength. Ultrasonic power of 600 W with a frequency of 40 kHz was used. The cavitation intensity was defined by the erosion loss of aluminum foil, whose thickness was 15 μm, when aluminum foil stuck on the bottom of the object was immersed into water in the ultrasonic field. The result was that the larger the cavitation intensity became, the more the heat transfer coefficient increased. With varying densities of objects, the greater the density was the larger the cavitation intensity.

The working model of Brunel's atmospheric railway (BAR) was made and demonstrated at a museum event and a university festival event. The original system of BAR was run commercially in England for a year during 1847-1848. The driving system of BAR is very simple but there were many difficult problems in working service. In this paper, the authors made the working model of BAR to realize and show the Brunel's challenge : the driving mechanism, the design know-how, the dream and passion, etc. The all person played with and watched at the model enjoyed very much due to the running by a vacuum cleaner. The present paper describes the summary the detail of the model, such as materials, sizes and shapes, performance, problems, and further applications.

In this study, vibration characteristics of mechanical structure having high natural frequency are investigated from the viewpoint of energy balance. Mechanical structures having high natural frequency in a nuclear power plant are generally designed statically and elastically. However it has been reported that fracture of ordinry piping is produced not by momentary large load but by cumulative fatigue damage. Therefore it is very imortant to grasp seismic performance dynamically by considering cyclic load. This paper deals with an investigation regarding seismic performance evaluation of high natural frequency mechanical structure. The energy balance equation that is one of valid methods for structural calculation is applied through the investigation. The main feature of the energy balance equation is that it explains accumulated information of motion. Therefore the energy balance equation is adequate for the investigation of the influence of cumulative load such as seismic response. In this paper, vibration experiment and simulation using sinusoidal waves and artificial seismic waves were examined in order to investigate relationship between natural frequency of structure and energy. As a result, we found that input energy decreases with an increase in the natural frequency.

<p>We prepared 7 cavity-backed disk plates which were same to baseline calibration plate used in COR test. Their membrane thickness increased by 0.2mm from 1.8mm to 3.0mm. CT(Characteristic Time)s were tested by a pendulum test instrument and CORs were measured through COR test using an air gun. The relation between CT and COR agreed with their linear characteristic described in "Technical Description of the Pendulum Test" by R&A and USGA for the thickness of 2.6mm or more. On the other hand, COR was constant and CT only increased for 2.4mm or less. Finally estimation of CT of the plates was simulated. As a result, we show that it is possible.</p>

This study shows the possibility of plaque detection by near-infrared hyper spectrum imaging (NIR-HSI) and machine learning without plaque stain. While the plaque stain shows where the plaque is, the plaque stain leaves color and may cause anaphylaxis. Near-infrared images are obtained from the plaque cultured teeth by NIR-HSI. RGB images of stained teeth are obtained and superimposed on the near-infrared image. The G channel of the RGB image is corrected to label the spectral data plaque or no plaque. Learning and prediction were performed by Artificial Neural Network. The proposed method showed that plaque could be detected without staining about 70% accurate.
