Underwater shock wave, generated by the imploding detonation of propane-oxygen mixture, was applied for extinction processing of microbes. We filled the water containing microbe into a stainless steel pipe having inner diameter of 10.9 mm, and transmitted the underwater shock waves which have the maximum pressure of about 100MPa. As microbe of the treatment experiments, Microcystis species were used. We found that the mortarity rate of Microcystis species increases gradually with the increase in the number of times of shock processing. Although the maximum mortality rate of Microcystis species was 99.9% in one day after processing, it turned out that it becomes 100% in one week after processing. The mortality rate became small when the value of the consistency of Microcystis species was large.

The lattice Boltzmann method is briefly described from its basic theory to some applications. The basic equations, the discrete BGK equations, are introduced, and the concept of this method is explained Two types of models, that are non-thermal and thermal models exist, and some thermal flows are simulated by two-particle models. Examples of the aero-acoustics and the multi-phase flows are shown. Some new topics are also briefly described, and the references are presented.

It is important to realize the robot handling soft objects. In this paper, we treat a string as an example of soft objects. Humans can create various figures with a string; we aim to develop a robot system that can do such a thing. We employ the string figures as the task. We propose a framework with which a robot can play string figures with a human. Concretely, we develop a description method that can represent a variety of procedures of string figures to be played by a robot and a human pair. In order to implement this framework on a dual-arm robot, we also develop a method to decide centers of loops to be picked up using camera images. This paper demonstrates the experimental results with a dual-arm robot Hiro-NX.

The authors have developed a vibration suppression system with variable vertical oil dampers in primary or secondary suspensions of railway vehicles for improvement of riding comfort due to vertical vibration. In order to apply this system into practical use, the function to detect the failure and stop the control in case some damper fails is required. This paper presents a technique for damper fault detection based on the phase difference between the bounce and the pitch vibration of bogie frames or car bodies obtained with inertial sensors, as a method without mounting sensors in oil dampers. The result of vibration excitation test with one vehicle on a testing plant demonstrates the fault of a primary vertical damper was detectable by evaluating the phase difference between the bounce and the pitch vibration of the bogie frames. The result of running test in a meter-gauge line demonstrated the fault of a secondary vertical damper was detectable based on the phase difference of that of car bodies. These results have suggested the proposed method is effective for the fault detection of both primary and secondary vertical damper.

A mechanics-of-materials deflection analysis of wooden baseball bats at impact is developed. Consider the bat which is simply supported a point of grip and elsewhere free to rotate, and the bat is subjected to the impact force with ball and the inertia force due to the sudden change of the angular velocity in swing. The static force balance gives the relation between the impact force and the inertia force, but the magnitude is left undetermined. By assuming that the impact duration is 1 ms, we get the solutions of the energy conservation equation as a function of hitting point. The present model provides the evidence for the COP (center of percussion) to be located very close to but not exactly in the sweet spot where the kinetic energy of bats can be most effectively transferred to the outgoing velocity of batted ball. Additionally, the deflection analysis determines the bending stress imposed at given velocities of bat and ball. It is shown that the largest bending stress is always located at the top of grip length irrespectively to hitting point. One hundred fifty broken bats in Hokkaido University play fields were collected and fracture surfaces were examined.

This research presents an experimental investigation on the vision performance of a human body which is sitting on an automobile seat. Six subjects were selected from a panel for the experimental research and frequency exposes from 1 to 30Hz sine wave vibration to the subjects by the sweep for 240 seconds with the total amplitude of 2 millimeters. The subjects were measured a standard visual acuity test and a self-rated assessment for difficulties in visual perception every 2 Hz and two subjects of them were measured vertical acceleration for their head in the experimental investigation. From the experimental result, visual efficiency was declined to 49.55 % in the vicinity of the frequency range of 20 Hz. The cause of reduction of eyesight has been considered using the model eye of Gullstrand, and it has been found that the deformation of optic-axis length was 0.257 millimeters when the average eyesight of all subjects was reduced from 1.15 to 0.57. Some results are presented in the form of parametric graphs. The results are useful for improving vehicle ride comfort, maneuverability and safety driving.

Automated driving is attracting attention as a technology that can improve the convenience and comfort of mobility. Research on automated driving continues to develop not only in the approach of vehicle automation but also in the approach of driver assistance. As an example of driver assistance technologies, a system has been proposed in which multiple light sources are placed at equal intervals in a tunnel and blink to encourage drivers to adjust their speed. This system is called a Pace Maker Light (PML). In this paper, we focus on the PML and consider applying it to automatic driving. Therefore, this paper aims to realize the velocity control of an autonomous mobile robot using the PML. First, we modeled the PML and the mobile robot and formulated the design problem of the velocity controller of the robot. Then, we proposed a control law that can achieve velocity control based on the light intensity information obtained from the PML. Finally, we conducted velocity control simulations and experiments with a miniature-scale experimental setup. As a result, it was confirmed that the proposed method could be used to achieve the target speed on a level road and a slope.

Underwater glider is the glider to use for environmental researches in lake and sea. The Reynolds number of flow around underwater glider is between about 104 ~ 105 and the research for the aerodynamic characteristics of such low Reynolds number region is not so much. So in this study, we investigate the aerodynamic characteristics for various airfoils of under-water glider at low Reynolds number by the towing water tank experiment and 3-dimensional numerical analysis using STAR-CCM+ by IDAJ co. ltd. As results of experiment, the lift-drag ratio of airfoils with camber become larger than those of flat plate. As results of numerical analysis, the effect of maximum camber ratio and maximum camber position and thickness ratio on aerodynamic characteristics and optimum cross-sectional shape of wing for underwater glider are found.

Numerical prediction of air-entraining and submerged vortices in pump sumps is important for engineering applications. The validation of pump sump simulations, however, still is not enough, because the simulations is very complicated; for examples, treatment of gas-liquid interface, detection method of the vortices and selection of turbulence model etc. We conducted numerical simulations of the benchmark experiments of the pump sump conducted by Matsui et al. (2006, 2016) and compared the simulation with the experimental data to investigate the effects of turbulence model, grid density and detection method of the vortices. We determined a threshold of the gas-liquid fraction function of VOF method (α) and the second invariant of velocity gradient tensor (Q2) to detect the air-entraining and submerged vortices by using vorticity, respectively. This method well detected the vortices and well reproduced the experiments for the RANS simulation using SST k-ω model. Large eddy simulation using Smagorinsky model, however, was sensitive to the grid system and difficult to reproduce the experimental vortex structures even for the finest grid system having 3.7 million cells.

Much difficulty has been encountered in cooperative traction of electric railcars and diesel railcars, because the structure and performance of the respective control systems are very different. Diesel railcars are characterized by more or less constant output from the initial to middle speed range and constant torque beyond the middle speed range. Electric railcars are characterized by virtually constant torque from the initial to middle speed range, with the output decided by notch order beyond the middle speed range. The authors propose a new control system for cooperative traction based upon an entirely new conception. This system changes a general notch order into a suitable notch order for the diesel railcar depending on the electric railcar's speed. The system was mounted on JR's electric and diesel railcars and tested on the main line of JR KYUSYU. Based on this test result, introduction of the system in commercial service was decided upon and practical operation began on April 29, 1989.

This paper reports the launching and organizing procedures of Robomech 2020, the first online conference in the history of Robomech series. We discuss the required functions of an online academic conference and show an implementation example. Analysis of the conference results and responses from the participants reveals the advantages and disadvantages of Facebook that is used as a platform of the online conference. The analysis also indicates the constitutive problems of the online conference. Consequently, this paper provides multiple clues for constructing a new platform suitable for more active and efficient online academic conferences.

In the previous paper, taking the non-linear Wing-In-Ground effect into consideration, the longitudinal dynamic model of Aero-Train after expanding it with a horizontal tail was developed for the purpose to clarify the relationship between the body frame design and its stability. This paper describes the development of the longitudinal dynamic model after expanding it with the lateral dynamic model.

In the oscillating wear test under engine oil containing Mo-DTC (Molybdenum Dithio-Carbamate), friction coefficient and wear volume of cylinder-specimen were lower than without Mo-DTC, in contrast, DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) film was worn deeply. A residue of oil contained amorphous carbon that had higher proportion of sp2 electron structure and lower density than DLC as coating. Judging by these results of our investigation, DLC film is graphitized in wear test under lubrication. This specific wear of DLC films is based on the wear mechanism that is attributed to graphitization, and the hard molybdenum sulfide and oxide which are decompositions of Mo-DTC are accelerated wear mechanically.

Topology optimization for structures has been applied to nonlinear structural problems, however conventional topology optimization methods for structures with geometrical nonlinearity encounter difficulties during nonlinear analysis using the FEM (Finite Element Method), due to the use of a mesh. In this study, we propose a new level set-based topology optimization method considering geometrical nonlinearity using a mesh-free/particle technique, for optimizing elastic structures that undergo large deformation. In the proposed method, the MPS (Moving Particle Semiimplicit) method, a particle method, is used for the response analysis, since it does not rely on a mesh for geometrically nonlinear analysis. In this paper, first, a topology optimization problem is formulated based on the level set method and a method for regularizing the optimization problem by the Tikhonov regularization method is explained. The reactiondiffusion equation that updates the level set function is then derived and an optimization algorithm, which uses the FEM to solve the equilibrium equations and the reaction-diffusion equation when updating the level set function, is constructed. Next, the particle interaction model and the treatment of geometrical nonlinearity in the MPS method are shown, and the implementation of combining the level set-based topology optimization and the MPS methods is explained. Finally, several numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method of topology optimization for geometrically nonlinear problems.

Hitachi Aero Plane Co. former Tokyo Gas Electric Industry Co. (Gas-Den), who also predecessor of Hino Motors, Ltd. developed an unique radial 22 cylinder aero-engine “HA51” by order of imperial army at the time of later period of the World War II. Although the engine could not be applied to test flight due to the end of the war, it has some advanced design features. For searching the design and the philosophy of this engine, brief history of the Gas-Den aero-engines was described in first part on this paper. That includes Japanese first own designed unique Shimpu (or Jimpuu) in 1928, Tempu (or Amakaze) and also Military Tank engine and others. The “HA51” engine was compared with “Homare” one of the Japanese high power engine and American P & W R2800. Unfortunately, some hypothesizes have to made on the engine, because it was missing at the war's end.
