I propose development of a hybrid flight system ‘Barone’, which is combined a balloon with a drone. Barone can be expected as a flight system that combines the advantages of both the stability of the balloon and the good operability of the drone. In addition, Barone can be applied not only as a new flight system, but also for short-term microgravity experiments, air launch to orbit, exploration of the planet with atmosphere. Particularly, Barone can be expected to play an important role in the life exploration on Mars.

Recently, AACN (Advanced Automatic Collision Notification) that presupposed cooperation with emergency life-saving organizations is expected. Therefore, emergency life-saving organizations must recognize injury speciation of patients, as quickly as possible. So, the author tried the traffic accident analyzing method by statistical data analysis from combing analysis items analysis items for main site of injury and analysis items for injury contents (indicated in the traffic accident statistics vote by Japanese National Police Agency). And furthermore it is necessary to improve the safety of vehicles not only for same class collisions but also for collisions between vehicles of different types (e.g., between SUVs and sedans). In this study, the author applied the method of analysis as described above for frontal collision between SUVs and middle sedans, and analyzed using statistical data stored in ITARDA (Institute for Traffic Accident Research and Data Analysis). In the case of fatal or severe injuries, it is shown that the component rate of chest fracture of middle sedan drivers is higher than that of SUVs. It is supposed that the difference in these rates is caused by the vertical offset configuration between the frames of the two different types of vehicles when they crash into each other.

We developed an acquisition method of maps and paths using ROS stacks for autonomous navigation by teaching playback framework. There are many strategies for autonomous navigation. In teaching playback framework, it is not a problem that maps are distorted continuously. However, if the maps are accurate, it is useful for human interfaces and extending the autonomous navigation area. Recently, the ROS platform has been used actively around the world. In ROS stacks, there is slam_gmapping stack that provides Grid-based SLAM using Rao-Blackwellized Particle Filter. Therefore we are trying to use ROS stacks for acquisition of maps and paths, and to evaluate its effectiveness for autonomous navigation.

This paper presents a quantitative evaluation method for seat arrangements in commuter railway cars. The purpose of the study is to evaluate seat arrangements based on passenger comfort and accessibility, which are important during train operation. To determine the unknown parameters in the function, experimental examination was done. A full-scale mockup with variable seat arrangements was manufactured. It was modeled on a 20 m-long car with four or six doors per side, because a choice of the door arrangement is one of the main parameters. Using this mockup, comfort and accessibility were measured for ten types of seat arrangements. The results of the proposed evaluation functions using computer simulations agreed with measured experimental results. Applying the evaluation method to several seat arrangements, it is found that the most suitable seat arrangement depends on the average boarding time of passengers. From the evaluated results, suitable seat arrangements for commuter trains are discussed.

This paper describes a LCP-based method for calculating contact forces in dynamics simulation of humanoid robots. The method is based on the algorithm proposed by Kokkevis, and we propose additional procedures that make the algorithm more practical in the reality and numerical stability. The simulation system is verified by experiments using humanoid robot HRP-2, and the result shows the efficiency and validity of the method.

The Young's equation describes the interfacial equilibrium condition of a liquid droplet on a smooth solid surface. This relation is derived by Thomas Young in 1805. It has been discussed until today after his work. In general, the Young's equation is discussed from the viewpoint of thermo-dynamics. However, there is no answer which elucidates the normal force balance σlg sin θ in the Young's equation. From the hydrodynamics point of view, there is a momentum jump condition at a gas-liquid interface. This jump condition is derived based on mechanical balance by using mathematical procedure such as Stoke's theorem and the differential geometry. In this study, we reconsider the Young's equation from this momentum jump condition point of view. Finally, we dynamics. However, there is no answer which elucidates the normal force balance σlg sin θ in the Young's equation. A compact air-cooling device often encounters high-density mounting environment, which may reduce a flow-rate of a cooling fan. In this work, the PQ characteristics of a cooling fan was investigated which varied by placing an obstacle in close proximity of a fan. Small axial-flow fans of 30-80mm in side length and small centrifugal fans of 35-52mm in side length were tested here. As a result, it was found that the maximum flow rate for the free air-flow begin to decrease when the opening area of the gap-flow between the fan and the obstacle becomes smaller than twice the fan flow area, and decreases suddenly if it becomes smaller than the fan flow area. This relation was almost independent of type and size of a fan, rotation speed of impeller, and shape and position of an obstacle.

A flying disc can fly through the air because of the combination of the lift and drag forces by the oncoming air flow. Actual fight conditions were confirmed to perform the wind tunnel experiment beforehand. In order to clarify the mechanism of flight of flying discs, the flow field structure and the fluid force were investigated on non-spinning and spinning conditions. In the fluid force measurement, lift and drag forces were taken by varying wind speeds, spin speeds, and angle of attack. Drag and lift forces were found to increase as spin increased. The angle of attack on the maximum range of lift-drag ratio or glide ratio was found to be wide from 6 to 13 degrees which was suitable for a long distance throwing. Using a smoke wind tunnel, flow visualization around the disc was performed in order to understand the effect of disc spin. It was found that spin enhances lift force by attracting the Coanda effect on the trailing edge.

A woodpecker strikes its beak toward a tree repeatedly. But, the damage of brain or the brain concussion doesn't occur by this action. Human cannot strike strongly the head without the damage of a brain. Therefore, It is predicted that the brain of a woodpecker is protected from the shock by some methods and that the woodpecker has the original mechanism to absorb a shock. In this study, the endoskeltal structure, especially head part structure of woodpecker is dissected and the impact-proof system is analyzed by FEM and model experiment. From the results, it is obvious that the woodpecker has the original impact-proof system as the unique states of hyoid bone, skull, tissue and brain. Moreover it is considered that woodpecker has the advanced impact-proof system relating with not only the head part but also with the whole body.

Generating novel design concepts in the conceptual design phase is a cornerstone for producing innovative products. This paper proposes a method to support the generation of new design concepts from patent documents. The proposed method is based on the theory of novelty potential that the combination of abstract concepts leads to the generation of the novel design concept and that the distance between the combined abstract concepts correlates to the possibility of generating it. This research adopts the distributed word representation model of word2vec to extract abstract concepts from patent documents and to measure the concept distance. The two matrices are introduced to visualize the relationships of the extracted abstract concepts; the novelty potential matrix which shows the value of the novelty potential between the abstract concepts, and the void matrix which shows the numbers of existing patents of the abstract concepts. They help a designer to identify the combinations of abstract concepts that are high novelty potential and no existing patent. This paper demonstrates a case study of generating novel ideas of sports business with blockchain using the proposed method. The results show its uniqueness and effectiveness.

There is a strong demand for improving brake system performance of Japanese Shinkansen which is a high speed railway to shorten the stopping distance at the time of an emergency such as a huge earthquake. An emergency brake for conventional train is a wheel disk brake system that is affected by rail tread surface condition (dry or wet condition), because of using friction (adhesion) between a wheel and rail. In order to achieve a high deceleration at the time of over 300 km/h, another complementary brake system guaranteed a stable braking force without the friction is required. In addition, it has to be a lightweight and small equipment space so that a passenger cabin capacity may not be affected. In this study, we discussed a small-sized aerodynamic brake system using an air drag panel. From the computational fluid dynamics using turbulent flow model and the wind tunnel experiment, the suitable shape of air drag panel, arrangement and an opening-and-closing mechanism of the panel were developed. In addition, a full-scale prototype aerodynamic brake device was designed and manufactured. Its aerodynamic characteristics were examined on a large wind tunnel with high Reynolds number. It was proven that the target braking force can be obtained with the small-sized aerodynamic brake placed into a thick turbulent boundary layer around the train at a running speed of 300 km/h.

In this study, we measured and analyzed the degree of posture discomfort with respect to the coordinated range of motion (ROM) of the thumb. For ergonomic assessment of a product CAD model using a digital hand model, such joint properties are necessary to be clarified when estimating possible natural postures to use the product. We concentrated on the thumb, which plays an important part to form various grasps by opposition. To model range of motion considering coordination among joint variables, each subject's hand during a given set of exercises was captured by an optical mocap system. A posture of the carpometacarpal (CM) joint of the thumb was expressed with spherical coordinates to integrate different subjects' ROM easily. The result was shown some characteristics of the thumb such as coordination among joint variables or collision between thumb and other parts of the hand. The posture discomfort data was collected through the experiments for four adults with healthy hand. To control variety of the postures, each subject was asked to reproduce about 45 displayed postures and to answer whether the subject felt discomfort or not in terms of keeping that posture for 10 seconds. The discomfort experiment results were combined into a discomfort possibility map with respect to joint postures. This map can assist product design, for example considering interface layout.

This paper describes how to produce a biodiesel from the oil in the waste soup of ramen noodles, and especially clarifies an amount of oil in waste soup, the energy profit ratio (EPR) of the production of biodiesel from the oil in waste soup of ramen noodles and the engine performance of the biodiesel from waste soup of ramen noodles. As a result, from the waste pig bone (ton-kotsu) soup the recovered tri-glyceride was about 11g per a soup. The biodiesel produced from the oil in the waste soup of ramen noodles by using ordinary alkyl catalyst method has low cold flow properties, due to the high content of the saturated fatty acid methyl ester such as C16:0, C18:0 and so on. And it is estimated that the amount of BDF from a ramen noodle restaurant is about 2.4L if the customers are around 300 per day, and this means that the 9.9 kW co-generation system is able to be operated for an hour per day. About energy profit ratio analysis, if the oil separation process is improved, EPR from the waste soup to biodiesel will become higher than 5.0. Furthermore, engine test is performed by using BDF from the waste soup of ramen noodles as B5. As a result, it is shown that fuel consumption rate and emissions are almost the same as the case of using gasoil.
