Image-to-sound mapping is a technique that transforms an image to a sound signal, which is subsequently treated as a sound spectrogram. In general, the transformed sound differs from a human speech signal. Herein an efficient image-to-sound mapping method, which provides an understandable speech signal without any training, is proposed. To synthesize such a speech signal, the proposed method utilizes a multi-column image and a speech spectral phase that is obtained from a long-time observation of the speech. The original image can be retrieved from the sound spectrogram of the synthesized speech signal. The synthesized speech and the reconstructed image qualities are evaluated using objective tests.

空中超音波の基本的性質を通してその特徴(長所,短所)を示し,強力な空中超音波を発生させるため,まず大出力の超音波を効率良く空中に放出する音源(周波数20kHz)の構成について示した.次に,この音波を使って強力な音波を発生させるための方法と現在最も実用的と考える音源について,その基本特性を含めて紹介している.更に,強力空中超音波特有の効果について取り上げ,それを利用した各種応用技術について,既に実用化したものから,実用化間近なもの,研究開発中のものについて,その概要を分かりやすく解説している.

In order to support user data rates of Gbps and above in the fifth generation (5G) communication systems, millimeter wave (mm-wave) communication is proposed as one of the most important enabling technologies. In this paper, we consider the spectrum bands shared by 5G cellular base stations (BS) and some existing networks, such as WiGig and proposed a method for spectrally efficient coexistence of multiple interfering BSs through adaptive self-organized beam scheduling. These BSs might use multiple radio access technologies belonging to multiple operators and are deployed in the unlicensed bands, such as 60GHz. Different from the recently emerging coexistence scenarios in the unlicensed 5GHz band, where the proposed methods are based on omni-directional transmission, beamforming needs to be employed in mm-wave bands to combat the high path loss problem. The proposed method is concerned with this new scenario of communication in the unlicensed bands where (a) beam-forming is mandatory to combat severe path loss, (b) without optimal scheduling of beams mutual interference could be severe due to the possibility of beam-collisions, (c) unlike LTE which users time-frequency resource blocks, a new resource, i.e., the beam direction, is used as mandatory feature. We propose in this paper a novel multi-RAT coexistence mechanism where neighbouring 5G BSs, each serving their own associated users, schedule their beam configurations in a self-organized manner such that their own utility function, e.g. spectral efficiency, is maximized. The problem is formulated as a combinatorial optimization problem and it is shown via simulations that our proposed distributed algorithms yield a comparable spectral efficiency for the entire networks as that using an exhaustive search, which requires global coordination among coexisting RATs and also has a much higher algorithmic complexity.

This paper describes a novel statistical bandwidth extension (BWE) technique based on a Gaussian mixture model (GMM) and a sub-band basis spectrum model (SBM), in which each dimensional component represents a specific acoustic space in the frequency domain. The proposed method can achieve the BWE from speech data with an arbitrary frequency bandwidth whereas the conventional methods perform the conversion from fixed narrow-band data. In the proposed method, we train a GMM with SBM parameters extracted from full-band spectra in advance. According to the bandwidth of input signal, the trained GMM is reconstructed to the GMM of the joint probability density between low-band SBM and high-band SBM components. Then high-band SBM components are estimated from low-band SBM components of the input signal based on the reconstructed GMM. Finally, BWE is achieved by adding the spectra decoded from estimated high-band SBM components to the ones of the input signal. To construct the full-band signal from the narrow-band one, we apply this method to log-amplitude spectra and aperiodic components. Objective and subjective evaluation results show that the proposed method extends the bandwidth of speech data robustly for the log-amplitude spectra. Experimental results also indicate that the aperiodic component extracted from the upsampled narrow-band signal realizes the same performance as the restored and the full-band aperiodic components in the proposed method.

In this paper, a hamburger architecture with a 3D stacked reconfigurable memory is proposed for a 4K motion estimation (ME) processor. By positioning the memory dies on both the top and bottom sides of the processor die, the proposed hamburger architecture can reduce the usage of the signal through-silicon via (TSV), and balance the power delivery network and the clock tree of the entire system. It results in 1/3 reduction of the usage of signal TSVs. Moreover, a stacked reconfigurable memory architecture is proposed to reduce the fabrication complexity and further reduce the number of signal TSVs by more than 1/2. The reduction of signal TSVs in the entire design is 71.24%. Finally, we address unique issues that occur in electronic design automation (EDA) tools during 3D large-scale integration (LSI) designs. As a result, a 4K ME processor with 7-die stacking 3D system-on-chip design is implemented. The proposed design can support real time 3840 × 2160 @ 120 fps encoding at 130 MHz with less than 540 mW.

The non-reference method is widely useful for picture quality estimation on the decoder side. In other work, we discussed pure non-reference estimation using only the decoded picture, and we proposed quantitative estimation methods for mosquito noise and block artifacts. In this paper, we discuss the estimation method as it applies to the degradation of the temporal domain. In the proposed method, motion compensated inter-picture differences and motion vector activity are the basic parameters of temporal degradation. To obtain these parameters, accurate but unstable motion estimation is used with a 1/16 reduction of processing power. Similar values of the parameters in the pictures can be seen in the stable original picture, but temporal degradation caused by the coding increases them. For intra-coded pictures, the values increase significantly. However, for inter-coded pictures, the values are the same or decrease. Therefore, by taking the ratio of the peak frame and other frames, the absolute value of the temporal degradation can be estimated. In this case, the peak frame may be intra-coded. Finally, we evaluate the proposed method using coded pictures with different quantization.

Bayesian networks are a powerful approach for representation and reasoning under conditions of uncertainty. Of the many good algorithms for learning Bayesian networks from data, the bio-inspired search algorithm is one of the most effective. In this paper, we propose a hybrid mutual information-modified binary particle swarm optimization (MI-MBPSO) algorithm. This technique first constructs a network based on MI to improve the quality of the initial population, and then uses the decomposability of the scoring function to modify the BPSO algorithm. Experimental results show that, the proposed hybrid algorithm outperforms various other state-of-the-art structure learning algorithms.

近年,左手系媒質あるいは負屈折率媒質と呼ばれるメタマテリアルに関する研究が非常に盛んである.メタマテリアルでは誘電率と透磁率が同時に負となる周波数領域で電磁波は伝搬できる.誘電率あるいは透磁率のどちらか一方のみが負となる場合,電波は伝搬することができない.このように,メタマテリアル技術を用いると電磁波の伝搬の設計範囲が広がることから,アンテナやマイクロ波回路の分野で様々な応用例が報告されている.本論文では,電波を遮断する周波数帯域を持つEBG(Electromagnetic Band Gap,電磁バンドギャップ)構造について解説する.

Recurrent neural networks (RNNs) are a powerful model for sequential data. RNNs that use long short-term memory (LSTM) cells have proven effective in handwriting recognition, language modeling, speech recognition, and language comprehension tasks. In this study, we propose LSTM conditional random fields (LSTM-CRF); it is an LSTM-based RNN model that uses output-label dependencies with transition features and a CRF-like sequence-level objective function. We also propose variations to the LSTM-CRF model using a gate recurrent unit (GRU) and structurally constrained recurrent network (SCRN). Empirical results reveal that our proposed models attain state-of-the-art performance for named entity recognition.

Appearance-based generic object recognition is a challenging problem because all possible appearances of objects cannot be registered, especially as new objects are produced every day. Function of objects, however, has a comparatively small number of prototypes. Therefore, function-based classification of new objects could be a valuable tool for generic object recognition. Object functions are closely related to hand-object interactions during handling of a functional object; i.e., how the hand approaches the object, which parts of the object and contact the hand, and the shape of the hand during interaction. Hand-object interactions are helpful for modeling object functions. However, it is difficult to assign discrete labels to interactions because an object shape and grasping hand-postures intrinsically have continuous variations. To describe these interactions, we propose the interaction descriptor space which is acquired from unlabeled appearances of human hand-object interactions. By using interaction descriptors, we can numerically describe the relation between an object's appearance and its possible interaction with the hand. The model infers the quantitative state of the interaction from the object image alone. It also identifies the parts of objects designed for hand interactions such as grips and handles. We demonstrate that the proposed method can unsupervisedly generate interaction descriptors that make clusters corresponding to interaction types. And also we demonstrate that the model can infer possible hand-object interactions.

Ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithms are a recently developed, population-based approach which has been successfully applied to optimization problems. However, in the ACO algorithms it is difficult to adjust the balance between intensification and diversification and thus the performance is not always very well. In this work, we propose an improved ACO algorithm in which some of ants can evolve by performing genetic operation, and the balance between intensification and diversification can be adjusted by numbers of ants which perform genetic operation. The proposed algorithm is tested by simulating the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP). Experimental studies show that the proposed ACO algorithm with genetic operation has superior performance when compared to other existing ACO algorithms.

Change-point detection based on an observed time series has emerged as an important method for detecting changes in dynamics of real-world systems. Recently, recurrence networks have been shown to be useful, which are network representations of recurrences, to analyze underlying dynamics. In this paper, we propose a new method for detecting dynamical changes using recurrence networks. The proposed method extracts a group of time indices that share the same dynamics as a community of the recurrence network. In addition, some numerical simulations are presented to verify the validity of this method.

Cryptosystems are widely used for achieving data confidentiality and authenticated access control. Recent cryptographic algorithms such as AES or RSA are computationally safe in the sense that it is practically impossible to reveal key information from a pair of plain and cipher texts if a key of sufficient length is used. A malicious attacker aims to reveal a key by exploiting implementation flaws in cryptographic modules. Even if there are no flaws in the software, the attacker will try to extract a secret key stored in the security hardware. The side-channel attacks (SCAs) are low cost and powerful against cryptographic hardware. The attacker exploits side-channel information such as power or electro-magnetic emission traces on the cryptographic circuits. In this paper, we will introduce the principle of SCAs and the countermeasures against SCAs.

Owing to recent progress in structural biology, the structures of a number of proteins have been resolved and deposited into databases such as the Protein Data Bank (PDB). Many proteins function as molecular machines or show allosteric effects, which require integrated communication between different parts of the protein structure;however, the general principles underlying such communication are not yet clear. All-atom molecular dynamics simulation is a powerful tool for tracking molecular motion, but is still far too computationally costly to be applied widely. In this paper, we present a simple method for assessing the properties of mechanical communications using coarse-grained steered molecular dynamics simulations with elastic network models. The method was tested by screening for a certain mechanical property among protein structures in the PDB.

A mathematical model is proposed to describe the nonlinear dynamics of the echolocation behavior of a bat during free flight in an enclosed chamber. In the model, a bat dynamically controls its flight and pulse directions (φf and φp respectively), to avoid collision with multiple walls of the chamber; namely, the bat varies φf and φp repulsively from the closest wall, minimizing the difference between φf and φp. Numerical simulation of the model with specific parameter values demonstrates that the bat can successfully fly in the chamber while emitting pulses along the inner periphery of an eight-shaped flight path, which is consistent with the results of a behavioral experiment conducted by using a Japanese house bat (Pipistrellus abramus).
