This paper proposes a new framework of distribution system planning under the condition of mass installed Distributed Generators (DGs). At present, distribution system planners do not pay much attention to the interconnection of DGs. However, if some DGs can supply power instead of conventional power stations, they will give a significant impact. The planners will have a new option to build a network system plan without unnecessary investment to distribution networks. In this study, an objective function for distribution system planning is formulated to obtain maximum profits for utilities, and the authors discuss reduction of the utilities' investment cost and distribution system loss for installation of DGs. In addition, the authors propose a solution method using a genetic algorithm technique in order to find quasi-optimal solutions for large scale problems. Furthermore, the authors also discuss the connection tariff in order to increase the utilization rate of distribution networks. The advantage of the proposed method is demonstrated through several numerical simulations with successful results.

The authors already proposed the new control scheme of the PWM converters where the control scheme was performed on the estimated voltage and phase of the source, thus eliminating the voltage sensor.The paper deals with a stability problem of a sensorless PWM converter control. Under consideration of the parameter error, the stability analysis of the proposed control is examined. In addition to that, a design procedure of the estimation gains is also examined. For the stable starting of the system, the initial estimation of the amplitude and phase angle of the source voltage is proposed.The effectiveness of the theoretical stability and estimation gain design has been confirmed by experiments.

Permanent magnet synchronous (PM) motors are widely used for industrial applications. In the PM motor drives, it is difficult to achieve the wide speed and constant power operations, which are desired in traction and spindle drives, because the field-flux of PM motor is uncontrollable and as a result the field-weakening control is not available. The air-gap flux, however, can be weakened by the demagnetizing effects due to the d-axis armature reaction (flux-weakening control). In this paper, the wide speed control method of the interior PM (IPM) motor, which includes the maximum torque-per-ampere control and the flux-weakening control, is proposed. In the high-speed flux-weakening region, there are some cases where the control performances become worse and the control system becomes unstable because of the saturation of current regulator and the effects of magnetic saturation. The high performance current regulator compensating these effects is also proposed. The control performances of the proposed control system are confirmed by the several drive tests with respect to the prototype IPM motor.

A single or multiple kinds of internal or external environmental variations of the system often cause the property variation of any system under control, and the readjustment of controller parameters is required. To maintain high performance of controlling and minimize the total cost for readjustments of the controller parameters, determination the appropriate timing for readjustment the controller parameters is important. This paper proposes new procedure to determine the appropriate timing for the readjustments based on the time-series data using the recurrent neural networks (RNNs). A well coordinated RNN with proper structure has high performance on the predication of time-series data with the assistance of its internal signal feedback structure. This paper conducts some numerical experiments to verify the availability of the proposed method to some systems. The experimental result indicates that the proposed method has higher performance than other existing method with the same aim.

This paper proposes the expat assessment system for global management personnel training utilizing the data mining employing evolutionary computation. This study follows the three steps. First step is to research those overseas temporary staff by direct hearing and having them answer the questionnaires. The second step is to make the data base with the results acquired from the step one. The third step is to construct the system to assess the prospective staff's aptitude or adaptability. The system would enable to promote the efficiency of assessment and to be useful in their training. This expat assessment system is built with the decision tree of evaluation standard based on the assorting problem solving method. For designing the non-terminal nodes of the decision tree, a new method is proposed utilizing the idea of the association rules, which is a powerful method in data mining. This is done to find out direct factors related to aptitude or suitability for overseas staff. The terminal nodes of the decision tree are to be optimized by Genetic Algorithm (GA) regarding a series of terminal nodes as the individuals forming the linear structure. As a result, the significant factors are found, which are strongly related to aptitude, adaptability and likeliness to be successful overseas. This research has revealed, by applying the system in practice, actual aptitude, skills and personalities required for expats.

A piezoelelctric quartz-crystal plate can be used as a microbalance (a quartz-crystal microbalance, QCM). When substances adsorbed on a gold electrode, a fundamental frequency of a QCM is decreased linearly with increasing mass on the electrode. The host molecule-immobilized QCM is used as a biosensor responding to the addition of guest molecules in aqueous solution in nanogram level.

Since odor sensing system is required in many fields, we have developed the system using QCM (Quartz Crystal Microbalance) array and neural-network pattern recognition. Moreover, the system for measuring many samples by an automatic sampling stage has been developed. In the present study, the characterization of the sensing films deposited on QCMs was performed. Responses of 37 kinds of films exposed to 14 sorts of organic vapors were studied to classify sensing films and investigate sensor response models. As a result of the research, it was found that the similarities among films were obtained using principal component analysis, and the frequency shifts could be estimated using multiple regression analysis.

A new method for localizing an odor source by mimicking the behavior of silkworm moths is proposed. A male silkworm moth is able to track airborne sexual pheromone to its female counterpart. During the search, a moth draws air from its front to its two antennae by wing vibrations, and turns toward the antenna more strongly stimulated by the pheromone. An artificial system with this mechanism has been realized using a small fan and plural gas sensors instead of the moth's wings and antennae, respectively. The system is called an 'odor compass' since it continuously points to an odor source by rotating the probe to the sensor with the largest response. The capability of its directional probing is successfully demonstrated by the results of estimation of the odor-source direction in a clean room. Furthermore, the improvement of the system to realize the three-dimensional localization, which is often required in a practical environment, is reported, and its feasibility is demonstrated.

To evaluate the suitability of the DC withstand test for use as the after-laying test for extrahigh-voltage XLPE cable lines, especially 500-kV XLPE cable lines, we studied the effectiveness of the DC withstand test and the influence of DC voltage application on AC insulating performance, using XLPE cables with artificial defects. DC breakdown strength of the cable with defects does not decrease radically compared with AC breakdown strength due to space charge effects. The defects that are detected by the AC withstand test might not be detected by the DC withstand test and short-circuited trees may appear at earthing after the DC withstand test, degrading the AC insulating performance. The DC withstand test should therefore not be used as the after-laying test for 500-kV XLPE cable lines.

In this paper, we fabricated periodic micro-bump array structure on Si substrate to evaluate their tactile sensations. Fine-edged Si micro-bump array structures can be easily fabricated by photolithography and dry etching processes. Sensory evaluation of tactile feeling of roughness and frictional resistance with human finger was conducted with paired comparison method. In addition, friction coefficient between the micro-bump array and an artificial finger model that mimics our fingertip was evaluated. The result of sensory evaluation showed that rough feeling was affected by edges of the micro-bump structures even though the grooves between the micro-bumps were narrow as 20 µm. In contrast, frictional resistance feeling did not depend on the effect of the edges. It was strongly affected by a contact area between the micro-bump structure and finger skin. When the width of the grooves between the bump were 100 µm, finger skin entered and touch the bottom of the grooves, and then, the rough feeling and frictional resistance feeling were increased due to the contact area increment. The rough feeling and frictional resistance feeling have little correlation with the frictional coefficient measured with artificial finger model. It was more easy for human skin to enter the narrow grooves, in particular when the groove width was 100 µm.
